Since I feel that I am hovering on being put back in Time Out for another eight months by Ron on here I want to point out that I will not link to my website in a spamming fashion. I am going to go very easy on posting links, if any at all - more than likely I will not post any links.
Also, no hard feelings to Tim and Vince. I think Tim has a great physique for his age [or any age] and Vince is a very interesting character to have around.
I hit a max PR for deadlift today - 445. I worked my way up but I felt I could have lifted more. I am thinking about trying 455 next week. The goal is to reach 500+ during 2010. I am consuming no supplements right now other than the occasional sample. I use chalk and a belt and a mixed grip [right over, left under]. My body weight is 179 in light gym clothes and light shoes, very soon after waking [within an hour or so].
Does anyone have any advice on how I can improve this lift? ???

You can do partial rack lockouts on the power rack once every 3 weeks or so. Set the pins so the bar is just 4 - 5 inches below your knees and add a couple of plates each side, cause it's a partial movement and you can lift more than a full ROM deadlift. That will get your body and mind accustomed to the heavier weight. You can even hold at the top for 3 - 5 seconds, which really makes your traps grow. Use a weight that makes you fail at the 4 - 6 rep range.
And every time you deadlift, do one set off the pins, so you're not grabbing the bar all the way from the floor (which is the sticking point for most people). You can probably do 500 for a couple of reps or at least for a slow negative this way. This will also help. Throw in some good mornings and make sure you train your abs and legs hard, cause they help with the lift too.
And finally, don't use a mixed grip all the time. Most powerlifters train with a normal overhand grip and use a mixed grip only a few weeks out of a meet, so they can do it on the day. Use straps too, cause your back is much bigger than your arms and you should never let your arm / grip strength limit your weight.

I have found that the best way to improve deadlift strength is to simply stop doing them for a while. I think that the Deadlift is more dependent on your CNS then probably any other lift.
I remember one time I was pushing myself hard every week to improve my dead... and I came down with a sickness...putting me out of the gym for about two weeks...and after two weeks, I was feeling a little better, (but still not 100%,) and my strength skyrocketed on that movement, while the rest of my lifts went down a bit...
Try cutting out deads for couple of weeks, but keep training hard in other movements, take two days off before maxing out again, and see if that helps...
-
Gain 15 pounds and you'll be deadlifting 500 x 5.
-
If you want sensible advice you would desist from doing heavy singles. The movement is a dangerous one. Don't do deadlifts! You prove nothing. Spend your time building your arms. They will tell others you are strong.
Hope this helps.

Don't do deadlifts?? No other exercise, outside of power cleans, works as many muscle groups as the deadlift, and is arguably the best way to hit the traps as well. It is really an indespinsable lift to a bodybuilder, if done correctly.
That said...doing singles is silly, unless you are prepping for powerlifting.

Nobody gives a rats ass how much you can dead lift.. why do you care? I’ve seen your vids, you are not built to handle heavy weight. I’m surprised you haven’t seriously injured yourself.

I agree. Guys who deadlift look / are stronger and thicker. And the added strength and muscle carry over and benefit your other lifts too.
Singles are fine if you do them once in a while and are feeling strong. But the risk factor goes up considerably, so don't do them all the time unless you're powerlifting. I think doing singles 3 or 4 times a year is alright (but not necessary).

Great stuff guys!!

I have been told this before. Someone said if I even put on 25 pounds of fat and got up to 200 or so I would be able to do it. Is that true? It would make sense given that powerlifters obviously have builds optimal to strength and they are very often [perhaps most of the time], muscular/fat.

He'd be smaller and weaker if he didn't. Not by a huge margin, but still...
I attribute most of my back development to deadlifts.

I like deadlifts.

Spot on. How you doin' old friend?
-
deadlifts are more of a leg movement and LOWER back movement than anything else.
its like doing a squat with the bar in your hands down low...or at least it should be if your doign it correctly. i LIKE deadlifts, but my back gets sore from doing them and keeps me from squatting, so i dont do them anymore. Squat is king.
Is that you in your avatar? I seem to remember you stalking me like a troll a while back, and I always assumed you were one of the Y board dudes just fucking with me LOL

Not bad, thanks bro. Good to see you still bringing the heat on noobs ;D

Don't use straps, use chalk.

+1, I feel heavy deads can take you to a whole other level.. it was always the case with me and anyone else I have known who did them religiously. however I do disagree on the singles as I feel the risk of injury is too great for any perceived added benefit. I have always kept them in roughly the 4-6 rep range on working sets.
-
Don't use straps, use chalk.
I use chalk, but can't lift my max weight for the same number of reps as I can when I use straps. I only use straps for a couple of exercises on back day (bent over rows and deadlifts).
I can't do rack lockouts without straps, lol - the bar won't budge with 7 or 8 plates a side ;D

i dont even know who you are. and i dont visit the Y board. must have me confused with someone else. i dont have any other handles on here.
Just dug up this PM from you. There are a few more like it. Anyway, the past is the past. Even though you wish me death, I hope you have a good life (as good as living with AIDS can be). 8)
fuck you queer. i think you are a piece of shit. if i ever meet you, i will jam a fork down your throat. and you can count on that cum sucking leech

Yes, some of the lifts I performed before were stupid. Having said that, when I did 445 today it was after an extensive warmup, where I went from lifting the empty bar to 315 and then did singles with 405 and 425 before doing 445. I was adequately prepared for the lift. In fact, my entire workout prior to my maximum single was essentially a warmup. Aside from that, I feel I could have done 460, so even my one rep max is not truly what I can do for only one rep.
I don't know ,MattC has been deadlifting heavy for years and he looks average at best .
Very true. I also feel that I will hit 500 and still weigh 175.

Also totally true. I've realized that now and accepted it. I feel sorry for people who think bodybuilding is just about "hard work" when they are bounded by the parameters of their genetics. :-\

Just use straps every now and then while doing deadlifts. Don't use them in any other exercise. Doing so you will maintain the grip, but add strength to you deadlift. If you have to show off, you can lift your max without straps anyway, because of that adrenaline rush what you get out of that.

I don't know you and have only glanced at your site.
But I do know a thing about using other's sites for your own gain.
I don't know what you are unsure about.
Your site link is obviously censored in the custom title below your name, and you circumventing it in your signature by using the masked "tiny" URL.
Clearly you are on Ron's radar, yet you are trying to fly in under it. Why?
-

Some lifters even think you shouldn't do deadlifts regularly (read the link)...something to think about. I know it sounds crazy but the more you think about it the more it makes sense.

I will be honest and say that flaccid, yes. In the winter it basically doesn't exists. It disappears inside my body!!
Erect, no, not small. Not huge but my no means small I would say. I would say it falls into the lower portion of the above average category actually.

I suggest buying a big aggressive dog first. Then when you have a reputation as a man who owns a fierce canine, then buy a the Hummer and boom you will be greatly respected.

In all seriousness, one day i will buy a hummer and my licence plate will say "GETBIG"

There is a character limit for signatures which would not allow me to post the link to my site there anyway.
Yes, I have been talking about my website too much lately...I will be stopping that now which is what I addressed in this thread. Ron's house, Ron's rules.
Do you guys believe the rumours that Ron is paid six figures a year by the "powers that be" to run this website? ;D

I want to increase my deadlift one rep max but even when I do my 1RM, it is really only about 95% or so of what it actually could be and only after a very extensive warmup. I really don't feel that there is a major safety risk and my back feels fantastic.

I will post my deadlift workout from yesterday but will not link to it out of respect for Ron. ;D Here it is:
Workout - Saturday, January 9th, 2010 - Deadlifts [back]
Deadlifts:
45X10, 135X8, 225X6, 315X3, 405X1, 425X1, 445X1 [*PR]
385X4, [385X3.6, 315X2]
Today was a great workout and I reached a new personal record for deadlift of 445 pounds! It is still lower than I would like it to be and I look forward to hitting 500 pounds sometime during 2010. I consumed an Iovate Health Extreme Energy 6-Hour Shot prior to this workout just as I did during January 2nd's deadlift workout.
I did the 385X4 and [385X3.6, 315X2] one rep at a time with about a 3-5 second pause in between each rep. I attempted to get 385 for a fourth rep performed with the weight dead from the ground after a brief pause after the previous rep but was unable to complete the lift after getting the weight around 2/3 of the way up. From there, I quickly stripped the weight down to 315 and performed a double with that weight, again, with a very brief pause between each rep. When I performed my second rep with 315 during that set [and the final rep of my workout], it felt heavier than the 445X1 felt!
Next week I will be doing a similar routine, and I am going to decide what weight to go up to for a one rep max. I'm thinking 455 but I'm not sure. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Overall things are still going fantastically well and I look forward to increasing my one rep max next week!
My only regret is trying to get that fourth rep with 385 when it should have been clear halfway up that I wasn't going to get it.
-

Don't start with an empty bar.
Try this........
135X10
225x10
315x5
365x3
405x2
225x15
Don't use straps, use chalk and a belt.
Don't try 455 again until you can get 405x5.
-
I remember seeing a vid of you deadlifting a long time ago and your form was pretty bad, so Id say make sure your form is good it makes a huge difference. Try to think about driving your hips through and pushing your feet through the ground instead of lifting the weight up.
Im a straps guy with an over/over grip I wish I didnt have to use straps but if I didnt I wouldnt be able to lift as much as I could without them.
Id say stay away from the singles for a while and concentrate on reps up in weight a little, rack pulls are a good option and will add some strength but may throw off your form when you go back to regular deads.
good goal though and definitely achievable by the end of the year if your hitting 445 you should have it in a couple months if you stay healthy.

So that would be 405 with a distinct pause between each rep? Maybe a two second pause?

Absolutely true. I could have gotten hurt. I had decent strength but really should not have risked injuries as I did. I'm happy I haven't had one yet!
-

Meh, either way, touch/go is good, add at least one rep per week, then jump to 455 and look for a double.

Yes.
-
Build up the rest of your muscles for awhile and come back to it.
Get plenty of rest. Take some time off from the lift.
Get a big-titted big-butted baby doll to work out right next to you when you go for it again. Make sure she is fine in every way. You'll get it. (the lift, that is)

Half the weight and hammer out 112 reps, that's impressive.

chaos's regime will work definitely but you could also look into
wendlers 5/3/1
and
our own stubbron's modified coan DL program, its in the training section of this site.
as someone posted already yourform kind of sucks, not that mine is much better.
so my suggestion would be to work on your form, find your weak spot in the lift and start doing an accessory to assist with that weakness, lift by percentages and in waves.

i deadlift only once every two week.
each time i hit a PR on a set of 5.
when i stale after few month, i just stop deadlift for few week, then start again.
deadlift every week for me = injury pain cns burn out.

I think if you hug more jews and invest in some exstenze your deadlift would rise Matt.
