but here's what top nutrition scientist Alan Aragon (one of the few not associated with a supplement company) has to say about the topic:
The people who give you sh!t are the same brotards who will spend $$$$ on completely useless supps, so we can laugh at them together.

very usefull reminder. It takes years sometimes a decade before a lifter finally get it. Protein powders dont do shit AT ALL. It's not like they just have a very small effect... THEY HAVE 0 EFFECT AT ALL and theyre made of pure crap that cannot rival with real solid food especially meats.
Nothing replaces chicken, tuna, steak, eggs, cheese, potatoes, pastas, rice. We still havent found better than this.
wavelenght is obviously someone who truly cares about newbies and is as sick as me to see em getting fooled over and over by cynical insecure liars.

protein does what its supposed to do, same with gainers.
every other bs suppliment on the other hand.

Really? Protein is the only thing I buy. I have a hectic schedule and I am able to make a quick shake while in a hurry and I don't have the time to eat anything. I do not think protein is a waste; however, I'm realistic that its not ever going to make me a huge bastard either. I do agree with you thought that the rest is just fluff. Eat, lift , rest and eat some more....pretty simple really.

if gainers are loaded with sugar, so called protein powders ARE NOT LOADED with proteins... that's the difference stupid halfwit. Looks like someone keeps on emptying mommy's wallet on "proteins powders that do what they re suposed to do = nothing" haha god you're dumb.

What if you like the taste of Protein shakes?
Seriously, a protein shake "does" what he's supposed to do, it has the same "effect" a chicken breast has. I don't know exactly what kinda "effect" you're expecting from Protein shakes or foods. With protein powder you can increase your daily protein intake conveniently without adding unnecessery fat or carb calories. And that's what it's supposed to do - Period.

Thanks man although IMO good protein powders can be used for convenience. In this case, I would call it a meal replacement, not a supplement. But I fully agree that it's not necessary.

wtf are you talking about?!
ON the back of the proteinpoweder bla bla of says exactly how much is it it per 100g or per 30g at least in sweden, stop being ignorant as always.
Protein builds muscle, if you dont have time to eat a huge steak, a big proteindrink will do. But it wont make you HUGE all of a sudden.
how about you post your massive body that was built without suppliments? ....
Oh thats right .............
now shut your mouth.

there is a big difference between the kind of so called "protein" you find in a protein powder and the kind of protein you find in real meat, but I guess you re not aware of that.

Protein powder is food. How is it not food but a supplement? How is it less a food than say cottage cheese? Lots of "real" foods are processed in a various ways.
Whey for example may be "better" in some respects than meat, and worse in others.
Protein powder = food. Nothing more, nothing less.

I disagree. There's a lot of garbage out there and most of them make false claims, but to say all supplements are crap is wrong. I think people's response to them is as varied as people's response to gear and on a much lower level, so a lot of people write them off too quickly after trying them out for just a few days or weeks. I think some of them are OK to be taken as long as you don't have unrealistic expectations.
And Uberman09, the whey protein in protein powders is no different than the protein in milk powder. When making cheese from milk, the whey protein separates in the process. Up until a few decades ago, the separated whey used to be thrown away, until someone realized it's actually very nutritional. All the supplement companies do is filter that protein and add other ingredients as well as flavor.

good post. Someone posed the question to me yesterday about whether supplements worked, and I first asked him what he meant by "they work" and his expectations. There are supplements made to elicit a certain response from your body, and if you feel you are getting that response than they do work. If you are looking for pumps, boost of energy, focus, recovery, etc. then there are plenty of supplements that do work for that.
As far as companies' claims that these supplements are essential for gaining muscle and will put slabs of muscle on you- it's upto you to be naive enough to believe that. Another factor as you mentioned is individual response- for example, some people respond well to creatine whereas others don't. Even the amount of protein one consumes has different effects in different people.
-
like ingesting a scoop of 24 grams of "proteins" equals ingesting 24 grams of proteins coming from steack, chicken, tuna, eggs....
looks like there are a lot of people on here who have a hard time admiting they flushed their money down the toilets for years with "protein powders".

I've tried a few of them over the years and have experienced a noticeable change after taking some of them. But we're talking something small - like a gain of maybe 5 lb from Creatine, which is mostly water, but still helps you lift heavier due to the added bodyweight. And that's all you can expect from an OTC supplement. It's not going to help you gain 30 lb over 12 weeks like a steroid cycle.
You don't absolutely need them, but there are a few you can take and benefit from. People who juice don't need 99% of them, unless they're getting it for free.

Taking protein powder is not the same or as good as eating whole food, for sure. But if you're eating 300 g or so protein a day and get sick of eating, protein powders are a convenient way to down some of it. Things like quality, amino acid profile and bioavailability don't matter when you're ingesting 300 g of protein per day.

Yeah, but whey protein improves the appearance of your complexion and hair, and boosts your immunity as well as glutathione levels which is a powerful anti-cancer compound. It won't give you big muscles, but it's worth taking for the aforementioned reasons.

OK, let's name "them". Food replacements (protein powders, EFAs, etc.) and OTC hormones / PHs aside, there is creatine which has a small effect on some people.

I haven't tried any PH, but Fish oil capsules, Multi vitamin & mineral tablets, NO2, Protein powder, Glucosamine Condroitin and Creatine are all pretty good.
I also tried Animal Pak ;D, which wasn't too bad - helped me recover better and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a 100% placebo effect. Not sure if it's worth the cost, though.

Fish oil capsules, Multi vitamin & mineral tablets, Glucosamine Condroitin, I would not necessarily call bodybuilding supplements (for improving body composition). Protein powder is a food replacement. Creatine I agree with, NO supps not.

You say "NO supps not". Have you tried them at all?
I have and they're OK for a pre-workout boost. I've had other people say the same, although the response seems to vary like most things.
L Glutamine is good too, although you have to take around 20 g of it everyday to feel the difference and that makes it fairly expensive.
Not sure what's in Animal Pak. A mate of mine is a distributor and he sold me a couple of those for a low price. I did notice some improved recovery and a little increase in strength, but didn't continue using it cause I didn't think it was worth the cost (~ $120 / month).

I've tried a few NO supps (obviously not all of them). Couldn't detect a difference for body composition. But more importantly, I don't know of any studies proving such a difference. Same with L-Glutamine (on top of adequate protein intake). If you say you did detect a difference, it's hard to argue against that of course.

I think with the pre workout stuff it helps you to train harder which in turn should stimulate more lean tissue if you are taking in quality and correct nutrients etc.
Taking them on there own and not training wont effect body comp only drugs do this.
Glutamine I found helps when dieting , you dont feel run down but as kiwi said dose needed makes it pricey.

x2 Anything that can give you a bit extra zing in the gym is well worth it..theres some quality stuff out there that does exactly the same as the overhyped/priced stuff like muscletech,BSN etc and doesnt break the bank account to much.

IMHO you can add 200 mg caffeine to dextrose and you'll be like : " this shit rocks preworkout !! "

Most supplements are considered effective by people who either don't have acces to proper food or just like to eat junk all the time better than eating the required healthy stuff you need to get those vitamins and minerals. Glutamine, creatine and the few other stuff that work are just like protein powder: it's easier and faster to get as a supplement than to get through normal nutrition but most likely less efficient. Supp companies prosper on the fact that nobody wants to manage the headache of eating accordingly to their needs.

you know ...

Not gonna happen, I won't reveal my identity.

Coming from a true expert on how to build muscle and "blood."

I also experienced the stimulation, probably mostly because of the caffeine. I didn't lift more weight because of it though. Additional glutamine never did anything for me.

like ingesting a scoop of 24 grams of "proteins" equals ingesting 24 grams of proteins coming from steack, chicken, tuna, eggs....
Once the amino acids are in your blood stream what's the difference? And if you for example bought whole egg powder (which is available) what's the difference? If you think casein or whey protein powder doesn't "work" then you're saying milk doesn't "work".
In some settings isolated amino acids are more efficient than whole foods. They are used as foods in hospital setting. As are MRPs made with whey, hydrolyzed collagen, etc.
They are food. They will provide protein and the protein will do what protein does. This is not to say meat for example doesn't contain important and beneficial nutrients not found in milk byproducts.

Don't bother. If you go back and peruse his past posts you will realize he's a delusional attention whore with a dark soul.
He's far, far, beneath you.
You do know that everytime you chase sev around this board and post about him that he's laughing don't you ???

Nope. Not even close. He usually puts up a brief fight and then runs aways to start another thread. Easily confirmed by the feed back. He's a fraud and 95% of the board realizes it.
Actually, every time you stick up for him I'm laughing at you.

ditto
doesn't make me lift more, I'm just wired as fuck as if i had just done 3-4 lines.

Try to pay attention here pennyless.what I'm trying to tell your sunburned brain is that he does it on purpose to get a reaction.
he posts,you react.
remember when you got your panties in a bunch when all the Y boarders were picking on you ???
when you let it slide and posted your pics with the funny comments they all left you alone.

Instead of presuming to know what I should know or presuming to gauge the emotional response of the Romanian gypsy maybe you can edify the board as to why, of all the posters who routinely get into heated banter with the arch enemy of the reptilian hybrids, far more than I do, such as Okami, Chimps, big14, JNN, MORTALCOIL, bigmc..., the list is endless, yet it is my posts that you find particularly compelling, troublesome and upsetting enough to respond to? Even to the point where it merits a "frowny face" and taxes the upper limit of your attention span.
If our genetically enhanced Winged Lion "part of the most elaborate experiment of the illuminati" sole purpose is just to get a reaction and his spreading of his preposterous cult philosophy is simply a ruse use to yank people's chain and garner attention what's it to you and how it effects me or others? How do you know that it is not I who is the one fishing for a reaction? It certainly has worked on you. Someone one would seem would have no business or interest in this one, of many, side bar internet squabbles.
Well, my pale skinned friend who is adequately coated with a liberal supply of survival enhancing safety fat, try again.

you guys arguments are pure science fiction. "im pretty sure it does this or that" "i feel more muscular, fuller, after i ingested my shake" please...
In fact nobody knows if proteins in "protein powders" are as potent as proteins from real solid foods, find me any solid proof, research, proving they are. Not from some bogus bodybuilding "guru", from actual scientifics with real degrees.

Frankly I'm not gonna get into a war of words with you ...because you type way to many of them ;)

You know Uber, sometimes I wonder why you are even on a bodybuilding board. Is there anybody here you even tolerate let alone like or if there's anything at all about the sport of bodybuilding you find not offensive? Having been a prime target for some of your wrath I have to admit that I did despise you and your negativity -- until I actually started reading your posts. Few have as much common sense and insight into such a vast array of subjects.
You are definitely an interesting, unusual and compelling character. I almost don't dislike you and would almost admit to following your posts with interest.
Only on GetBig.

LOL! I know you are not fat!!!! I post, you react. Get it?
I know you're a good guy and one of the more level headed down to earth fellas around here. I just don't get this notion that because someone behaves in a way that is fishing for a reaction that it invalidates a person for reacting. Like they are playing into the person's hands.
If I spit in your face. Slap your girlfriend on the ass. Will you just stand there in obsequious compliance? Not wanting to be manipulated by me and "playing into my game." One of the problems is that people don't react enough. They are so caught up in their own self absorbed little narcissistic bubble. Two weeks ago I saw someone urinating at a bus stop. In broad daylight when school was getting out and children were walking by. You damn well bet I reacted.
I can't read minds so I can't determine and judge a person's motivations for their actions. But I can judge their actions. What they actually do. I know this commits the cardinal sin of this day and age of being judgmental. To actually have standards and proclaim that there are some things that are better than others and there is a difference between good and bad and it's not just "whatever" or "it's all good."
