I disagree. There's a lot of garbage out there and most of them make false claims, but to say all supplements are crap is wrong. I think people's response to them is as varied as people's response to gear and on a much lower level, so a lot of people write them off too quickly after trying them out for just a few days or weeks. I think some of them are OK to be taken as long as you don't have unrealistic expectations.

And Uberman09, the whey protein in protein powders is no different than the protein in milk powder. When making cheese from milk, the whey protein separates in the process. Up until a few decades ago, the separated whey used to be thrown away until someone realized it's actually very nutritional. All the supplement companies do is filter that protein and add other ingredients as well as flavor.

good post. Someone posed the question to me yesterday about whether supplements worked, and I first asked him what he meant by "they work" and his expectations. There are supplements made to elicit a certain response from your body, and if you feel you are getting that response than they do work. If you are looking for pumps, boost of energy, focus, recovery, etc. then there are plenty of supplements that do work for that.

As far as companies' claims that these supplements are essential for gaining muscle and will put slabs of muscle on you- it's upto you to be naive enough to believe that. Another factor as you mentioned is individual response- for example, some people respond well to creatine whereas others don't. Even the amount of protein one consumes has different effects in different people.

like ingesting a scoop of 24 grams of "proteins" equals ingesting 24 grams of proteins coming from steack, chicken, tuna, eggs....

looks like there are a lot of people on here  who have a hard time admiting  they flushed their money down the toilets for years with "protein powders".

I've tried a few of them over the years and have experienced a noticeable change after taking some of them. But we're talking something small - like a gain of maybe 5 lb from Creatine, which is mostly water, but still helps you lift heavier due to the added bodyweight. And that's all you can expect from an OTC supplement. It's not going to help you gain 30 lb over 12 weeks like a steroid cycle.

You don't absolutely need them, but there are a few you can take and benefit from. People who juice don't need 99% of them, unless they're getting it for free.

Taking protein powder is not the same or as good as eating whole food, for sure. But if you're eating 300 g or so protein a day and get sick of eating, protein powders are a convenient way to down some of it. Things like quality, amino acid profile and bioavailability don't matter when you're ingesting 300 g of protein per day.

... supplement companies are scum. Their products don't do shit and all they want is your money.

Yeah, but whey protein improves the appearance of your complexion and hair, and boosts your immunity as well as glutathione levels which is a powerful anti-cancer compound. It won't give you big muscles, but it's worth taking for the aforementioned reasons.

OK, let's name "them". Food replacements (protein powders, EFAs, etc.) and OTC hormones / PHs aside, there is creatine which has a small effect on some people.

I haven't tried any PH, but Fish oil capsules, Multi vitamin & mineral tablets, NO2, Protein powder, Glucosamine Condroitin and Creatine are all pretty good.

I also tried Animal Pak ;D, which wasn't too bad - helped me recover better and I'm pretty sure it wasn't a 100% placebo effect. Not sure if it's worth the cost, though.

powders loose the necesary enzymes

there is absolutely no comparison between red fresh meat and a powder when it comes to building muscle and blood

People do not realize that what's necessary in the meat resides in the juice not the meat ;)

Fish oil capsules, Multi vitamin & mineral tablets, Glucosamine Condroitin, I would not necessarily call bodybuilding supplements (for improving body composition). Protein powder is a food replacement. Creatine I agree with, NO supps not.

What is in Animal Pak?
