John Clayton just said on ESPN’s “NFL Live” that the Raiders are preparing the process of cutting quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Clayton said it is not a matter of if, but when Russell will be cut. He also said the team could release Russell before Oakland’s minicamp, which runs Friday through Sunday, and that there is no trade market for him. The Raiders will save more than $6 million if they cut Russell this year.

i'm not fball fan but i did watch russell during his lsu yrs n NC.  he is what is broke about the national felon league.  too much, too soon before he actually proved he could play.  yet another draft of busts coming.  nfl needs to fix its' cap like nba for 3 yr guys.

Very few girls can actually make it in the NFL.  Jamarcus wasn't one of them.

Bigger even than Marinovich (I'm dating myself here)? Than the incredible bulk, Tony Mandarich? Than the Boz? That's saying something, considering the NFL has some all-time epic busts...

Yes , but Marinovich's band SCURVY rocked !!!!!!!

ask any LSU fan and they'll tell you the raiders were morons for falling for the juice.

Dude cost us a national title vs auburn and florida, never was able to check down at all, just had a big arm.

They fell for it. I'm not surprised he's struggled so much at all. Raiders scouting is terrible if you ask me.

Ryan leaf still has the title. Him and manning were neck and neck that year and after watching him (leaf) play in the rose bowl, he had a lot of people convinced he was the real deal including myself.

Eric Lindros never lived up to the hype either , nor reached his potential .

Lindros actually had some success though in his career.  He also had injury problems.

I give a pass to a guy who gets injured.  To me a bust is a guy who had control over their circumstances but simply did not live up to his hype.

Ok , I Concur , he wasn't a bust , he had a soft head and i think a bad shoulder  , perhaps he should have played with the Quebec Nordiques, and not have sat out that season . After he said , " J'aime jouer les Nordiques " after he was drafted, and then never showed up to camp, i lost respect  for the man, not the player. I believe , He did win a Canada Cup .

Russell has to be one of the smartest players ever. Knew he couldn't play, made people believe he could, held out to get a big contract, and then got paid. A true legal scam. But he was a bust. Leave it to the Raiders to make bad decisions though.

Just came out recently saying how he blew it and got hooked on painkillers. At least he owned up to it and isn't blaming anyone else for being a bust, I dint think you will hear the same from Russell. Guess Leaf would be the bigger bust since he had actual NFL skills and Russell was a pretender

I watch leaf that year and he had all the goods. Him and manning were a toss up at the time. The only knock of either of them was manning not being able to win the big game and he got happy feat under pressure.

Leaf was a man amongst boys. Running over linebackers, throwing ropes after checking downs, arm, height, was tough....I was sold he'd be the man in the league

Besides the fact that Americans dont care about the Olympics nearly as much as they use to. Little kids arent training from the age of 3 to reach their dream of being in the Olympics. The best athletes are training for NFL,MLB,NBA,etc. They wanna get paid not get gold medals. We would own the Olympics more so then we already do if we cared as much as other countries

Now you have to be a white American? What a pathetic argument. Americans come in all shapes, sizes, races and creeds. The people winning those Gold medals were citizens and qualified to participate for America in the games. If you have a problem with that, take it up with the Olympic committee.

Agreed.

I agree. Just talking about the conditioning required to play each sport. Football players sprint for about ten seconds then take a break. Soccer is nonstop. No question the all around skills football players have, jumping, speed, strength, etc blows soccer away

I never understood this claim about soccer being non-stop. The only people who seem to consistently move are the mid-fielders. The other guys spend the majority of the game walking around or sitting still while they wait for the ball to come back down the field, which could be anywhere from 10 seconds to 5+ minutes. Then the ball gets kicked down field and the guys at the front sprint for a few seconds while everyone else walks around.

And Warren Moon had to first prove himself  in the Canadian Foot Ball League.

They'll respond with something like, "But soccer players run upwards of 5 miles a game" as if running 5 miles over the course of 90 minutes is impressive. I've seen 10 year olds run 5k's in 20-something minutes and while it's not 5 miles, double it to 10k and they're still under 90 minutes while running a longer distance.

Lineman push against 270lbs plus at full speed each play. Try doing that for an hour with a 20 second break after each 5 second all out push. Kinda tough.

Russel was a lazy POS.  I guess he was probably a decent athlete, but he obviously just didn't want to play football.  He should have been cut long ago.  From what I understand, he's refused to even practice/train this pre-season, so I guess they finally had no choice.

P.S. for those who say he "made his money," he'll be broke in 5 years, just like all the others.

You can't call Carter, bosworth and smith a bust.  They have some serious injuries that ended it early.  Who knows how they would have ended up.  Bosworth also wasn't considered to be a top pick by most experts.  His self promoting made him out to be better than he was.  Bosworth was built on hype and nothing else.  A media darling.

Carter played 10 years, and though tore his ACL, compared to other RB's that have had the same injury, Frank Gore for example, he never did much.
Akili Smith flat out sucked. Held out in camp and I don't recall a serious injury.
As for Bosworth, still a bust if drafted in the first round and expected to help totally change or improve the Seahawks.

Yes but surgery procedures over the last decade are far more advanced.  Shawn Merriman with the same injury 10 years ago would have been out of the league but with today's medicine is still playing.

Calling Bosworth and Russell a bust is incorrect.  Seattle and Oakland are the busts for falling for the hype.

If a team decides to draft a 4th rounder first overall who's fault is it?  The player for playing like a fourth rounder or the team for picking that player so high?

Out of the NFL world for a sec....

Sam Bowie...the guy drafted before Jordan.

Dontrelle Willis, ex-Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers pitcher.  He pitched brilliantly with Florida, capturing a World Series in '03.  He was then traded to Detroit, where he battled depression and a rapidly declining career.  I believe he went to Double AA soon after joining the Tigers.

Ah, Jamarcus Russell.  He's the guy that skipped the mandatory Raiders meeting once the season was over.......for a weekend bender in Vegas.  Shit, as it stands, Oakland has 6 fuckin' QBs on its roster, lol.

Donovan McNabb was the #2 pick overall in the 1999 draft. The player that was selected #1 overall was QB Tim Couch of Kentucky, selected by the Cleveland Browns.

And Warren Moon had to first prove himself  in the Canadian Foot Ball League.

how did couch do?

He was the exception, not the norm.

Modern sports medicine is really pretty amazing!  Brandon Roy (NBA) had surgery for a torn meniscus in his knee, and was playing professional playoffs basketball eight days later.

for basketball i'd give it to greg oden, a has been before he was a never was as a pro.      baseball would have to be brien taylor hotshot  no 1 of the ny yankees 1  million out of highschool because he could throw 99 mph as a senior. got in a fight never pitched effectively again at any level.

todd marinovich was groomed to be a quarterback from birth, his father had him doing position specific drills as an infant. he fed him only the finest foods and drilled him without mercy till he got drafted and stunk up the nfl. his father now trains mma fighters.

I'd nominate Len Bias before Greg Oden.

Nah, not a bust, well it sort of is a bust, but its a portland bust,

whats a "Bust"?  to me its if they were excellent in college and cant do anything in the NBA..like Michael beasley and Kwame Brown.

Is greg oden a bust? well, we know he can play when his healthy, but can you call someone a bust if there injury prone? it must kill portland managment to see Durant destroying the NBA today
