Title: I met AVBG Alex. Also pics of Lee Priest.
Post by: Vince B on May 03, 2010, 01:42:24 AM
I finally met big mouth AVBG. One look at the dude and I told him he should forget about bodybuilding and take up table tennis! Besides, his head is too big for his body.

Alex has been bad mouthing me and my gym so I had to sort him out. We agreed that we can both be assholes on the internet. Just a minute here, did I agree to that? There was no animosity or anything and we shook hands and had a few laughs. Seems like a nice guy. Doesn't look like a bodybuilder but what does that matter. Lee was working his booth. He had his wife and a few gals helping him out. I told him to bring some supplements to sell at my gym.

Lee wasn't bulky but looked ready to compete. I am always amazed at those huge forearms. I asked his wife but apparently he doesn't pose in mirrors around the house.

Any of us here with guns like that would be wearing the mirrors out!

Lee wouldn't hit a double biceps for me so here is his thumb up pose with his supplements.

We didn't talk much. I overheard him tell someone he will be competing in the under 202 class.

Not many people on Getbig work out - that's why Ron called the site what it is - because the majority have still to "Get big".

Hahaha, you gotta love these old schmucks with too much money to spend and attention craving to fill. What we see here is a classic case of a creepy old dude buying 4-5k+ dollars worth of camera equipment just so he can walk around with it around his neck(amateur, oh brother) and tell people that he's a "photographer", especially to young unsuspecting females(males in Basile's case?). They like to invest in big lenses to use it as a phallus symbol. Of course their actual pictures are rarely seen and even though in the rare occasion you do get to see their portfolio you can't help but think "I could've taken these with a disposable camera". These old schmucks of course love to discuss the specifications of their cameras to people that couldn't be less interested.

Tony Doherty was there according to Lee but I didn't see him there. I asked Alex if he knew who Quickerblade was. Nope.

Yes, that is a 16-35 F2.8 lens. I used it to take shots of the equipment and wide angle shots from higher up. Photography is a passion for me and I always

look forward to sunny days so I can shoot landscapes and bushwalk.

The shots here were taken with my G10 because it has a flash whereas the 5DII doesn't.

This fellow was doing some heavy bench presses at the Integrity equipment stand.

I took a lot of shots of the displays. Here is one showing the Hydra Fitness stand. Not many companies had displays. I guess the professional fitness business isn't that great in Australia. The home equipment business seems to be doing fine.

vince won his country's national title 40 yrs ago, not bad, doing well at your chosen endeavour.
vince also has had numerous pictures published in all the big bbing publications. Not bad, having your hobby pay you, and gratification of some good pics.
he knew and socialized with the greats of bbing such as Arnold, before they became the greats.
I dont know what his camera cost, dont care what he does with it, but if anyone has credentials to be in a bbing expo, this guy does.

Post by: Vince B on May 03, 2010, 08:12:00 AM
The salesmen at the equipment booths don't always enjoy talking to me because I comment on the equipment. Everyone who designs and builds equipment thinks his machines are the best. I have told some of these guys how to improve their equipment but when I return the next year I see the same old equipment. I always give credit for excellence in gym equipment designs. This is the first year I didn't try any of the machines. I didn't see anything new that interested me.

Usually on Saturday afternoon you can't move at the expo. This year the attendance seemed down. In the past they sent lots of free passes to gyms so maybe that accounts for the lack of people. These expos are great for seeing heaps of fitness gals and models. A few top gals were there but unlike our Ron I didn't get any shots this year.

The tall blonds in the yellow tights were two of the best gals at the expo. Right across from Lee's booth.

Look at some of the booths. What have they got to do with fitness? Boxing is quite big in gyms. I don't care for it but my son says many members request it. Gyms have changed and provide many services to members.

I was there on Saturday with my wife, Amanda. I got some ideas for our 2011 expo in Melbourne and caught up with quite a few friends and sponsors. I thought it was pretty well done but based on aerobics and exercise to music more so than bodybuilding or power sports.

I got to MC some of the stuff on centre stage and did an intro for Markus Ruhl who guest posed mid afternoon. I left Sydney very early on Sunday as my son had his first game of footy in the morning. Lee looked great and there is a big interest in his products. Flex Lewis, Brandon Curry and Monica Brant were all there with their sponsors. Markus came down to Melbourne yesterday and trained in my gym last night. He is a funny bastard and we had a few laughs.

Listen to Alex trying to start some shit about young guys. That is scraping the bottom of the barrel as a stirrer. I know

why I piss people off. I tell them the truth. If your head is too big for your body take up table tennis. I don't have to

make up stuff just to win a wooden spoon for stirring ability.

Yeah, I wanted to know who that dude was and confront him because he was saying bad things about me and my family in the past. He stopped doing that but I still would like to see this hustler and what he looks like. He likes to give advice to the flotsam here. I wanted to get his photo and post it on Getbig. Exactly what I did with you.

I didn't shy away from talking to you and telling you I didn't like your bagging my gym. Where do you train in Sydney? I know most of the gyms and the good ones I can count on one hand. I still consider I have the best equipped gym in Sydney. Hotboz is next and everyone else is down the list.

You know Alex, the one thing I have never enjoyed or accepted from the Aussies is their sense of humour. The Aussies fabricate things and think that is funny. They get the blokes to dress up as sheilas for a laugh. I make jokes about the truth. That is the humour I found in America and you still see it on TV. Raymond's show is just everyone putting each other down. Of course, this kind of humour doesn't go over so good on the internet and some take offense.

So I don't always detect when someone is pulling my leg. Even the girls do it here. I tend to believe what people say and get disappointed, then they tell me they were kidding me. One year on my birthday this Guitar store phoned me to tell me they had a special guitar in and were holding it for me. So I rushed over and when I got there he told me it was gone. I was bitterly disappointed and left the shop in a huff. The owner chased me up the street and I found out my ex had bought me a Brazilian Rosewood Martin D41 which cost a fortune. My day was spoiled even after getting that amazing gift.

Your gym aint great Vince, there's a lot wrong with it which is well documented. I train at Squashlands Liverpool, come by and do some cardio  :)

For what it's worth, I know I am at best considered a "novice" but why should that stop me from training and competing (if that's what I want to do)? I couldn't care less about what people think of me or my physique- this is getbig where everyone is faregame.

But unlike yourself I don't go down the path of trying to ridcule people who choose to train and compete. Do you think that only the genetically superior should only train and compete?

Alex my gym is way better than Squashlands. How you can put my gym down when you train where you do is a joke. Get yourself to a better equipped gym and you might get better.

Send me a message if you want to have a workout at my gym. I will show you how to use some of our unique equipment. Then you will be enlightened.

I am not criticizing your physique or trying to discourage you. I merely pointed out you have a big head for your body. It makes it hard to look big. Ray Mentzer also had a big head but he won Mr America.

I never discourage people from improving. I help people at my gym free of charge. I never charge for any help I give my members or anyone else.

Seems you are too sensitive, too, which goes to show that everyone is. We all like to bag others but it isn't so amusing when it is returned.

Well, Alex, you have a lot to learn. When you have owned a gym for 40 years and been around bodybuilding for 50 years maybe you will understand. Keith and I have been around the game for a long time and met a lot of people. We have paid our dues as they say. You are just starting out. I honestly was surprised when you posted your pre-contest photos some time ago. I thought WTF is this? From what you write on Getbig I assumed you were some huge bodybuilder. Nope, just an ordinary guy who lifts weights. What gives you the right to comment the way you do on the net? You piss people off just as much as I do.

Have you bench pressed 400 pounds? Keith has done over 500. That means something to me and should to you as well. Just because you can hold your own with a keyboard doesn't make you a big man.

shame on you.

I told Alex exactly what I thought about him. He said bugger all to me. Then he comes on here saying shit again. I resent that. Like I said, I was doing all the talking and he was just standing there. If he had something to say he should have said it then.

I resent when someone bags my gym then admits they train at Squashlands. I know that gym because it was up for sale years ago so I had a look. That isn't much of a gym. Even Lee Priest trained at my gym but doesn't know some of the equipment I have made because he never used it. He told me he would know how to use my biceps supinator but it has 9 adjustments and isn't that easy to get right straight away. That is why I prefer to have myself or my son Zorba show bodybuilders the unique equipment.

Do you know how many years I have spent in a factory designing, building and modifying equipment? I have been doing this full time since 1981. So I take a lot of pride in what I have built and don't take kindly to someone putting my gym down.

Vince and Roz's fitness.. It's a former pub converted to a gym.. I've trained there a couple of times, it's got some funky home made equipment - worth a look but honesty it's  not what he thinks it really is... Much better out there in terms of layout and ammenities.

Alex, as a nobody you should do some research. Our current gym site was never a pub! TAB machines were made here. That is why we have an anti-static floor in the main equipment area.

If muscleheads come to the gym they won't know how to use some machines. So they don't try them. What we find is bodybuilders tend to do what they do elsewhere. We have 4 machines in the gym where you can do lying triceps extensions. This is one of the most effective triceps exercises if done properly. It helps to be guided through a workout. I haven't seen this apparatus elsewhere. The old Coogee Gym had one but it had the cables coming from the floor instead of from 5 feet as recommended by Larry Scott. Even Golds Venice doesn't have this machine.

There are a lot of good fitness centers in Sydney now. We have big chains like Fitness First and most clubs are installing gyms. Virgin Active is an excellent facility but needs a full line of equipment before bodybuilders will enjoy using it. What I have seen is the guys like to hang out at gyms where heaps of gals train. We cater to everyone but have never had more women members than men.

My camera is a Canon 5DII. All up my kit cost about $25,000 which includes heaps of L lenses. Equipment is expensive here in Australia.

Here is a shot I took last year outside where the Fitness Expo was held. Sometimes you have to be at the right place at the right time.

Well make an excursion out of it.. Don't take my word for it, it's well worth seeing for yourself. It wont be what you expect to see but the free weight area is pretty good. Make sure you bring a GPS if you do go, you'll need it to navigate from the change room to the main floor.  ;D

Warning the purple decor will require you to take some advil once you're done.

I get approached by security when I set my tripod up in the carnival area of the Easter Show in Sydney. They come back to see the amazing photos I capture at night. This is straight out of the camera. It took me a few years to figure out how to properly capture this ride. It is hard to believe this is a sideshow ride called Power Surge and not something done in Photoshop.

Vince why does american/canadian tv/film/movies look different from AUSTRALIAN? like the american makes everything LOOK better (not necessarily higher quality, just makes things look surreal

whereas australian tv is really clear and makes our movies, tv shows look like shit

cant be because america uses NTSC and australias uses PAL... i have emailed the tv networks but nobody responds back to me, would make there shows better visually

Here is a scene from Mount Wilson. A great place to visit up in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney. Those overseas should understand that Sydney is on the same latitude as LA and Atlanta. About 35 degrees from the equator. The Canadian border is 49 degrees. That is why I moved to Australia. That and to get work to support my family in 1971.

The Power Surge photo was done using a 70-200 zoom lens. I had a neutral density filter on the front to cut down on the amount of light by 3 stops. Then I used manual mode 2 seconds @ F16 and zoomed out as I took the photo. This ride is amazing. Every photo you take is different because of the way it moves in 3 dimensions. For this photo I moved the lens while zooming out.

When I came to Australia in January 1971 I got a job as a PE teacher at Killarney Heights High School in Sydney's northern suburbs. I lived in Manly at the time. In August 1971 I opened the newspaper and told Roz I was going to buy a gym so that is exactly what I did and we have had the same gym but in 3 different locations since that time. So I did two jobs for 10 years and never had a holiday. During that time I managed to get a Dip Ed and then start a MEd from Sydney University. The degree took me a long time because I was teaching school at first then quit teaching in 1980. I started making gym equipment in 1981. That was probably a mistake. It would have been cheaper to import equipment but I was fussy and made things my way.

Manly is nice although most have to ride the ferry boats to work each day. I stayed there a few days when in Sydney for work. Is Circular Quay still a hotspot in Sydney?

I'll stand by what I said. You're not redeeming yourself by posting these pictures. In fact you're just proving my point. Those are tourist snap-shots at best.

Take the picture of the rusted hull for example... No interesting angle, your picture doesn't say anything, too much stuff going on in the background, too much beach is taking away from the hull etc. You just stood there and thought "This looks cool" and snapped a photo and that's it. There's no real art going on here, more like forensic photography.

You certainly don't need equipment worth 25k$$ to take photos like this. But lemme guess, you've found a "passion"  ::)

I know your kind too well.

Hey, art is whatever you want it to be and you probably have fun while taking these pictures so whatever floats your boat..

But I just chuckle when I see people spend 10x the amount of money on camera gear than they actually have to.

Am I an expert? Not necessarily, but I do make a living out of photography. My pictures are mostly of journalistic nature but I do know what's required of a camera and what to use it for.

Please post your website so we can see your work.  Thanks.  By the way I love photography.  We had photography class in high school and got my first blowjob by our school slut in the dark room.  I had thousands of photos of places I have been and things I have done but lost 90% when my friends (Tony Halme) girlfriend at the time got mad at him and threw everything away he had in his storage unit which is also where I had some of my stuff including a zillion photos.

Hey thanks, it's all good.

Why I pick on Basile is because he's been spending way too much money on camera gear instead of going out there and getting it done(taking photos). This is common among older men taking up photography as a part of their late-life crisis. Imagine how much he could have traveled and taken photos of exotic locations with 20k+ dollars. Holy shit!! Oh well, his loss.

Yea but Basile is fine financially.  A $5000 camera for a hobby he likes so much is really nothing.  I mean if you can afford it then why not get the best you can.  Its like a car, some people spend a ton on a car and some don't.  its all relative.  Either way you guys take a whole better photos than I do.

I used to shoot with a Nikon SLR for decades. I never bothered about the lenses as long as I had a few. I started using digital cameras in 2003 with a Canon G3. Every year I upgraded until the G10. Along the way I found I couldn't take photos of athletics because I would miss the throwers most of the time. So I bought a Nikon D80. I upgraded after a couple of years to the D300. Last year I switched to Canon to get the 21 Mp, video and cheaper lenses. You won't see much difference with a limit of 300kb but when you examine photos at 100% you see a big difference. You can't have too many pixels. At the moment 35mm full frame digital is the best all-round solution for portability and quality at a reasonable price.

Why anyone would criticize someone else for what they own is beyond me. Who cares? If someone wants to drive a Porsche then that is his business. Everyone who owns a camera knows who has better equipment. I don't put anyone down and often help others who are taking photos. Pros don't tend to be so helpful.

I consider myself a good photographer but there is an awful lot to learn and it is so easy to mess up from time to time. As long as I am improving then I enjoy what I am doing.

Sure you can take snapshots with just about any digital camera. Some dude won awards and uses a point and shoot because he covers war zones and his small camera isn't questioned or noticed much. Anyone who enjoys photography will want the best lenses and bodies. I don't believe anyone who says they don't.

After just reading that you play guitar, i'm gonna go home and smash mine, you pussy.

oh please... photography is one of the easiest "hobby" to have, just buy a fucking expensive camera and here you go, you re an expert, you take great looking pictures, as simple as that, stop trying to bullshit  us with how it requires any kind of talent. I can see several morons like you every week end in the local park. Most of em are lonely guys with no personnality or retired people. It's the failed man's hobby. Anyone can do it, it requires no skill at all and most people always take the same kind of stupid pictures everyone else is taking. Fact is nobody gives a flying fuck about any pictures taken by these morons, not even their wives -when they have one- or family, nor do the whole fucking world. Especially when the pictures are all the same and we ve seen it ten thousands times already.

i don't know about you, but since the advent of facebook and other shit sites, everyone has to take photographs of every single fucking thing.

fat chicks especially.  i was at a wedding and this guy's fat wife kept taking pictures of everyone doing everything.  every time i took a swig out of my beer bottle, she was standing there, snapping away, fucking fat bitch.  (ps, i'm not a looker or anything, she was just taking 300 photos a minute, so i was always in them)

If you look at it that way sure. Like successful stockbrokers getting cars that they have no business driving really, it's all a showoff. But they're usually not claiming to be actual race car drivers just because they own a 400hp car.

But >>25k dollars<< in camera gear(as he told us in this thread), especially if it's spent on consumer brands like Canon/Nikon and not Hasselblad/Mamayia, is a whole lot of goddamn money to spend. It's excessive. There's absolutely no need to have that much equipment unless you are one of two things:

1) A full fledged pro that has to have all of this equipment in order to do his job properly. These people work with photography almost 24/7 and their entire income depends being able to take out their high-end gear out in the field and expect to have it beat up at some point. They usually have several cameras on them because they don't have time to change lenses.

2) Old schmucks that spends way too much money on camera gear because the equipment itself gives them more satisfaction than actually taking good pictures.

I have a feeling Basile belongs to #2. And fine, it really doesn't have anything to do with me but I just can't help but point out how ridiculous it is.

Pic says May10. I take it you're in LA now?

I will demonstrate why the 5DII and expensive lenses are worthwhile.

Photos taken at Echo Point at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains. I set my tripod up after dark and took these photos. 30 second exposures. There were a couple of people trying to capture the scene but with less success because their equipment wasn't good enough. I used my 70-200 F4is lens @ 97mm and was pleased at the detail I captured. The light was about 200 metres away so wasn't that bright.

The second photo was with my 500mm F4 lens. The part of the first Sister was captured and it was almost in the dark up there. Quite impressive detail which is the 3rd photo.  Good tools in photography cost a lot of money. Professionals know this. Sure, just because you have expensive equipment doesn't mean your photos are better. However, I like being in the situation where I can't blame my equipment.
When I finished shooting it was 8pm and there was nobody around. Not too smart because I have a lot to lose if I get mugged. Anyway, what I do isn't what most tourists do.

There are lots of categories of photographers and not just two as our learned friend obviously knows. Like I said, pros aren't that friendly.

Sorry, photos mixed up after I edited the first photo as it was 97mm and not 200mm.

I am still in Sydney. Might go to Canada in July for a while. Have to photograph my home province properly this time. Love going to BC, and Kamloops is great in the summer as is the Okanagan. Vancouver is always beautiful as long as the sun is out. August is the sunniest month so I will be visiting my grandchildren and son there. I should get to LA before I return. Always something interesting down there. Might even visit Las Vegas and find out what Keith is up to. No pun there, Keith.

What are you smoking? Why wasn't their equipment good enough? The only crucial part to these shots is having a rock solid tripod. It's not a moving object so ISO capabilities is not important here. Notice how you keep on emphasizing how good the "detail" is and not how good the photo itself turned out to be.

And LOL at your previous statement that you can never have too much resolution. How big do you print? By the square meters? I seriously doubt that the quality of anyones photos depends on the resolution.

I have my own standards so why do you use yours to judge me? You said anyone can take these photos. Well, that is crap because tourists seldom have tripods and when you see one it is light and flimsy. I used a gimbal head with mine that night. When I shoot landscapes I want all the detail on foliage I can get and that means I need megapixels. A Hblad with 65Mpx would do the job but now that is expensive.

A kit costing $25000 in Australia is not that big a deal. The 500mm last year was A$10,000. Our dollar is up so the price has come down. The 5DII cost about $1000 less than when it was released last year.

You are proving my statement about professionals. I was at a camera club and those guys wouldn't give anyone much time or advice. I dislike all that photography competition stuff so I don't go any more. I do it for my own enjoyment and sharing some with my friends and family.

My friend (and Stuntmovie's) is known as the "most published photographer in the world"  He has more magazine covers and articles than any other photographer.    He has made an incredible amount of money taking photos.  I have been on numerous photoshoots (not near as many as Stuntmovie) and his photos are unreal and he never has more than one or two people helping (mostly for reflectors) and he uses only Nikon.  It is the ONLY way he made money.  I remember one time we were on a shoot and kept going down the beach farther and farther away from where we started.  Well when we came back someone had stolen one of the bags that just so happen to have 3 cameras totalling about $20,000.  I jhave attached a few of his work.  Do you know him.  Not you Stuntmovie :P

So you're saying that your photos are all tech and zero artistry?  :D

Even if one would cut 25k aus dollars in half so you get 12,5k usd that is still a shit ton of money. You can get a fully professional kit for that sum, except maybe for some of the bigger 400mm/f2,8 telephoto lenses if you intend to shoot sports or wildlife.

What exactly do you need megapixels for? To zoom in 300% on your screen at home or to do your photography justice? Just admit that you get a bigger kick out of acquiring equipment rather than taking photos.

Kihei by far.  The other side is more local and very laid back.  The Kihei side and coast is more tourists and trendy.  I like that.  Then on weekends or whenever take a trip to the other side and then upcountry then to Hana.  The other side Wailuku and that coast is much more scenic and laid back.  The upcountry area is just spectacular. It is just to slow there for me.  But, if that is what yuo like then that would be perfect.

Awesome pix,Vince. I use to think there was nothing to photography. I just figure you just point and shoot and the quality of the pictures just depends on the camera. That was until I met a pro. Like so many things I didn't understand or appreciate I got to see a glimpse of how much there is to it and the difference between someone who knows what they're doing and someone who doesn't. It's kind of like the first time I saw a Jiu-Jitsu match. Didn't look like much to me. Just a couple of guys wrestling and trying to make the other guy give up. It's only after I started to train and study in it that I realized how much there is to it and how much more I appreciate watching top tier athletes. It became a thing of beauty to me.

I'm no where near your level and can't really appreciate all that there is to it as I'm still a novice but some of those shots are really awe inspiring.

If you have a DSLR and shoot all sorts of subjects then eventually you will want an assortment of good lenses that help you capture things better. Most people want wide angle lenses for things like sunsets and landscapes. Those lenses are also needed to shoot in corners of rooms. A good solution is to have a wide angle zoom. Nikon make the best with the 14-24 while Canon has the 16-35 which is quite good. Then you need to cover the standard angles and Canon have a handy 24-105 that also has image stabilization. In Nikkor lenses it is called vibration reduction. After that we find telephoto lenses and the popular range is 70-200mm. Both companies have released new 2.8 models that cost around $2500. You can buy a 5DII body for the price of one of these lenses. Those who shoot flowers will need a macro lens. After that there are super-telephoto and specialty lenses. These are the most expensive lenses in the range. A 800mm lens cost over $11000. There is even a Canon 1200mm lens that cost $100000 if you can find one. You can also buy tilt-shift lenses if you want to correct perspective distortions while shooting buildings, for example.

Accessories are helpful and the 5DII has no flash so you need one of those. The best one cost about $500. Then you need filters to protect lenses and reduce or change the light from scenes. Some add GPS devices to add locations to image files. A remote cable is needed if you have a telephoto lens.

As well as lenses you need a good backpack if you are trekking and want to carry a lot of lenses. Memory cards are also required and a couple of 32Gb cards are what many have who shoot all day. If you shoot RAW you will need more memory. When you get home you need a fast computer to process your photos and do things such as stitching big panoramas. I have done a few with over 100 photos. I use my 500mm lens for some panoramas and one had 95 photos with that lens. The file was enormous and really taxed the computer. Then you need software such as PhotoShop and Lightroom and they are not cheap. So it all adds up. Those in remote countries like Australia pay extra for equipment and especially if the dollar is worth less than the American dollar.

You can't buy much photography equipment for $12500 if you need a long super-telephoto lens.

Hi Pellius. I am proud of my sideshow photo. I haven't seen anyone capture that in the way I have. I posted several photos that were walkaround shots. I can go out and shoot 1000 photos in a day quite easily. One project is capturing the coloured sands of Rainbow Beach in Queensland. Now that is an amazing place. I have spent two whole days walking along that beach taking photos. After 12 hours in the hot sun I can tell you it is taxing in the extreme. I almost couldn't walk both times because by the end of the day my feet were sinking more in the soft sand and it was hard to walk. What happens is the tide comes up and you can't walk on the firmer wet sand. That walk was about 5 miles each way. I can tell you that took a lot out of me but I will do it again because the sand cliffs change after each big storm.

I sold my Martin. Not smart because it is now worth about $30,000 here in Australia. Brazilian Rosewood has been really expensive to buy and there are restrictions on importing and exporting products containing that wood. Some luthiers charge over $5000 just for Brazilian back and sides as an option.

I have a collection of Lowden guitars. 6 are Brazilian. I prefer the Lowden sound for fingerpicking. I like the beauty of the wood but the sound is the main thing. I also have a Gnatek Aussie classical guitar which sounds good. This is another expensive hobby. Pretty soon some smart guy will point out it isn't necessary to spend over $2000 on a guitar that sounds good.

All assortments of lenses? Most people that actually care about taking photos do just fine with a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom. TWO lenses that will cover 99,99% of everything you could possibly shoot. If you happen to be a sport/wildlife photographer then a 400+mm/2,8 may be necessary but that's an exception.

Who in the holy blue hell NEEDS 32gb cards? I've honestly never seen anyone coming close to filling up a 8gb card unless you're out shooting 3-4 days in a row and just happens to be able to charge batteries but not being able to download pictures from the card. This just shows that you're more fascinated by numbers than what you actually need. Panoramas end up being cliché almost 100% of the time and it's EXACTLY the kind of stuff people of your kind do. It's the technical process and the equipment that it requires that fascinates you, not the picture itself or let alone art.

Ever read Ken Rockwell? I bet you have. In my mind he's an attention craving douche most times but some of his articles speak the truth, the kind of insight that comes from extensive experience in the field.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/notcamera.htm)

Some excerpts:

"Cameras don't take pictures, photographers do. Cameras are just another artist's tool.

Why is it that even though everyone knows that Photoshop can be used to take any bad image and turn it into a masterpiece, that even after hours of massaging these images look worse than when one started?

Maybe because it's entirely an artist's eye, patience and skill that makes an image and not his tools. Even Ansel said "The single most important component
of a camera is the twelve inches behind it."

A camera catches your imagination. No imagination, no photo - just crap. The word "image" comes from the word "imagination." It doesn't come come from "lens sharpness" or "noise levels." David LaChapelle's work is all about his imagination, not his camera. Setting up these crazy shots is the hard part. Once set up, any camera could catch them. Give me David LaChapelle's camera and I won't get anything like he does, even if you give me the same star performers. "

"Buying new gear will NOT improve your photography. For decades I thought "if I only had that new lens" that all my photo wants would be satisfied. Nope. I still want that "one more lens," and I've been shooting for over 30 years. There is always one more lens. Get over it. "

And hahahaha this one:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/7.htm (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/7.htm)

"Rich Amateur: Level 2    back to top

These are amateurs who, by having too much money, buy lots of equipment which can fetter their freedom of expression. They are mostly men, and many are old or retired.

Rich amateurs shoot Leicas, Contaxes, Alpas, Hasselblads and Linhof 4x5s. These are great cameras, but the results are the same as the Zenits, Pentaxes, Bronicas and Tachiharas.

Today they mostly shoot Canon 1Ds-Mk IIIs, 5D Mark IIs or the Nikon D3X.

These are the same idiots who bought the first 2.7 Megapixel digital SLRs designed for newspapers like the Nikon D1 back in 2000 just because they cost $5,000. They gave technically poorer results than the film cameras used by snapshooters. All because it's expensive doesn't make it good.

Bad rich amateurs think fuzzy B/W images of poor people are art. "

You were saying what about Hasselblad...?? hahaha

It's vince's hobby, so why do you care so much?  The person who actually DOES the hobby generally knows a lot more about it than the person who just THINKS they know something about it.  It's like a guy who doesn't lift giving out advice to a Pro BBer on lifting (happens here all the time btw).  Copy and Paste...which is what you're doing...is no substitute for experience...which is what Vince has in that particular hobby.

The same way people would rag on Goodrum if he spends 500$ on protan products for a show, I rag on Basile for thinking that lots of expensive camera equipment=photographer. Hell Basile shouldn't even talk here when you think of all the shit he's been spewing at Goodrum.

Oh I've got experience with cameras, I'm a paid photographer. Not claiming I'm an know-it-all expert, but I do have experience with cameras. I'd consider myself experienced enough to judge Basile for what he is.

Look at what I wrote just above. Wouldn't you fuck with Goodrum if told us that he spent hundreds of dollars on protan for a show when that's the least of his concerns? What if he genuinely believed that the protan made him an actual bodybuilder? People would rip him a new one.

"Cameras don't take pictures, photographers do. Cameras are just another artist's tool.

Maybe because it's entirely an artist's eye, patience and skill that makes an image and not his tools. Even Ansel said "The single most important component
of a camera is the twelve inches behind it."

"Buying new gear will NOT improve your photography. For decades I thought "if I only had that new lens" that all my photo wants would be satisfied. Nope. I still want that "one more lens," and I've been shooting for over 30 years. There is always one more lens. Get over it. "
These are all great points, and I really the tech/old man angle, but let's not forget that Henri Cartier-Bresson took 000's of pics for every 1 that he decided made the cut.

Sure that's a great point. You gotta be very selective and only promote/publish photos that might actually say something to people. The end product is what matters in the "end". If that end product required thousands of other photos being trashed, then so be it.

But remember Basile, it's artistry and not pure chance or technology.

it's a no brainer that you have to have talent in order to be a photographer...the argument that AMONG the talented, the equipment can set people apart from one another.

having great equipment alone doesnt make anyonea  photographer...but Vince obviously has talent, and is saying that among the talented, you have to have the right tools to do teh job properly....

But that's just the thing... it doesn't set people apart from one another. The other one just happens to have a more expensive camera rig. People have a real hard time grasping this concept. Any idea how far you can get with a beginner dslr going for under 1k? Heck I've seen 100x more artistic photos than I've ever taken by people who only use their Iphone camera.

The more expensive equipment gets it has all the more to do with how user friendly it is and toughness, features you don't really need unless you're gonna spend A LOT of time with it ie working with it.. Image quality? Lenses have been near optically perfect since the beginning of the 20th century. Some 100+ year old photos have AMAZING sharpness and dynamics. Most 18-55mm beginner kit lenses today are fucking awesome. There is no need to buy the latest most expensive stuff all the time for image quality. If Basile really cared about resolution, dynamics etc he'd shoot film and not digital.

He can get AMAZING(top notch) looking photos with used equipment worth less than 1k usd, why does he have to spend 12,5k usd to get the same thing?

Vince, I really like your work, Thanks for posting it for us to enjoy .

I am one of those guys who know nothing about photography but I always have a camera in my pocket and am always taking it out to shoot pictures of anything I think is interesting.

I have close to 9,000 photos on my hard drive but I'm only impressed by less than 5% of them.

With your pemission, I'd like to throw a few up here and ask for your honest opinion and what I could have done to make it a better shot. And if they look like shit, let me know because I won't be offended in the least.

Ahhh, maybe just a little bit offended.

I shot there with a $99 Kodak digital camera but I can get access to the RED if you think that that will help. Take a look at Red.com for those details.

BTW, I knew herb Ritts and his crew pretty well and he had one person who merely changed his film when he used those old film cameras. He actually told me that he didn't know how to do it properly.

I got tons of photos which I will post on their own site if this offends  ya in any way.

Thanks.

This 1st couple of shots were taken on the Venice Beachwalk up towards the Santa Monica border. I felt like I was intruding so I took the photos quickly and left in a hurry.

Where exactly did I say that Goodrum doesn't deserve all the shit he gets? I've been here since 2006, I've seen the stuff that's been going on. My 500$$ protan scenario was just purely hypothetical.

I'm not sure I said that Basile claimed to be an expert either. I've been ragging on his outrageous spending on camera gear that he really doesn't need unless he is some sort of collector or gets a kick out of buying expensive shit which he won't admit. Hell, he has admitted though himself that better pictures supposedly come from better gear which I hold to be false and so does pretty much anyone that thinks photography is more about art than technicalities. I'm 100% certain that your expert photographer friend also share this opinion. It's a matter of principle and not who's better than who.

You wanted me to post pictures so I could have some credibility and I did. I didn't say my pictures were any better than Basile's or your friends for that matter. Where do you get this shit? But I'll admit now that I have big enough of an ego to claim that I at least TRY harder than Basile does, I try to do something with my pictures than just being obsessed with the equipment. In the end as an observer, do you care more about the picture or the equipment that was used? I have fuck all idea about what camera your friend used in that surfboard photo, but it doesn't take away the slightest bit of its awesomeness.
If it was Basile in the same spot as your friend, he'd probably take a picture of some obscure palm tree with a 500mm lens and then talk about how sharp the image is.

And look who's talking, you've been spewing as much if not more shit than I have on these boards, most of it unprovoked against a certain gay black individual. Not that it matters to me in any way but don't be a fucking hypocrite.

This photography debate would be totally different if held on dpreview. Start a thread there and I will join in.

Sometimes one gets projects that require special lenses. I have one where I want to capture a skyline 22 Km away. I tried a 300mm lens with a 1.4 extender on a D300 but it wasn't long enough. I think an 800mm lens might do the job on a FF camera, perhaps with the extender. I want to almost fill the photo with the buildings and do a 100 to 200 photo panorama. It might be something I can sell, who knows, but it really is a challenge to capture. A problem that arises with such distances in the sub tropics is that you have to wait until cooler times of the year because when it is hot there is no way the atmospheric conditions allow clear images from that distance. You get all manner of air current distortions and the photos are unusable.

Gotta love the way some anonymous jerk with an agenda persists no matter what. Persistence is no guarantee that you are right. It shows only that you have an agenda. No matter what is said you don't change your accusation. You are not the judge of who is a good photographer. I don't accept any one person as a judge of the work of others. Most of the time it is a matter of opinion and that changes with fads and fashion and experience and knowledge.

Lots of enthusiasts want the best equipment they can afford. The longer one takes photos the more gear you will want. When I was shooting RAW plus Jpgs I could use over 100Gb in one day. So don't make rash statements about what someone else needs because that is crap. Why do you think they sell 64Gb 128 Gb cards and bigger ones are on the way. If you shoot video you will need even bigger cards.

OK fine you use your equipment in any way you see fit and I have no right to be a douchebag about it, even though shooting skylines panorama with 600mm+ FF is a tad bit obscure hobby sure but I can't be bothered any longer. You win.

This is just out of curiosity... 100gb in one day? Even if you give generous mb's per pixel for the raw file lets say 40mb and plus 6-7mb for the jpeg... that still amounts up to over 2000 pictures. In one day! Holy shit! Props for sorting all that out later. If you take the average 1mb per pixel it gets even crazier.

You need to educate yourself more about your craft before you spend anymore money.

Your 300 with a 1.4 = 420mm x the 1.6 crop factor of your D300 = 672

But you're prepared to go out and buy a FF and 800 which would still only give you 800?

Why not just buy the 800 then with your 1.6 crop of the D300 you have - 1280

And if you're still stuck, move a little closer.

I have taken over 2000 photos during a 12 hour walk about a beach. No, not the kind that sunbathers frequent. I captured the Coloured Sands of Rainbow Beach. Every 100 metres there was something new to record. The 5DII files are huge if you shoot RAW. I don't do that any more because I was needing a 2TB hard drive every year or less! I use RAW only when using artificial light and occasionally when shooting difficult flowers. Difficult because reds, oranges and purples aren't always captured accurately by most digital cameras. The 5DII delivers reasonably accurate colours. This is another reason why I need a top camera. I was fed up with the inaccurate colours when I took flower photos. Roses and Irises for example vary in colour and even my Nikon D300 wasn't adequate. The 5DII produces jpg images that don't need much processing.

My G10 serves me well for most flower shots. It also is excellent for macro work.

So how you do you deal with all these pictures when you get back home and download them? Does it feel like 2000 images were well spent or was it excessive? I'd personally be thrilled to know I have 2000 images with at least over a 100 winners in them. That's a pretty good ratio between garbage and success. Most often though, that's not the case.. at least not for me and most people I know that takes pictures. Did you get a lot of winners out of those 2000 photos?

On one trip I used 3 cameras: 5DII, D300 and G10. I even took some videos because in places the sand was falling like waterfalls. When I attended a photography club the experts told us to shoot RAW. That left an impression on me and I also read what people suggested on the net. My experience with day long shoots told me I needed more memory so I bought two 32Gb cards to supplement my two 16GB cards and two 8Gb cards which adds up to 108Gb. Since stopping the RAW + jpg I seldom fill a 32 Gb card in a day. It is still handy to have more memory if you are away on a trip and can't access a computer or other device to upload your photos.

The one time it paid to shoot RAW was last year at the Australian Pro contest in Melbourne. I could easily change the colour temperature in PhotoShop CS4 and get the colours right. With jpgs it was not possible.

I also shot my daughter's wedding last year and without RAW files I wouldn't have been happy with the ceremony because it was held in the shade on a day when the temperature was over 40 degrees Celsius. That is 105 on the F scale. The RAW photos saved the day. It is possible to do batch processing if many need similar settings.

Here is a photographer I admire. Ronnie Gaubert takes photos of birds. No, not the hot kind seen on Getbig, but the flying kind. He gets up before sunrise because he feels the best light is at sunrise and for an hour afterwards and also the hour before sunset. He takes over 500 photos each outing then processes about a dozen that he is happy with. He shoots RAW so he can get the colours right.

http://www.pbase.com/ronnie_14187

He took this amazing photo of a dragonfly that required a 10 second exposure. I asked him how it kept still for that long. Well, he said insects are cold blooded so if you capture them before the sun warms them up they just sit there. He also uses a 300mm lens with a 1 inch extension tube so it will focus closer. His photo has good depth of field because he used F22.

Do you think I take photography lightly! Do you honestly think I would buy expensive equipment if I didn't feel it was worth the money? I have a 500mm F4 but it isn't long enough even with the 1.4 extender. I have tried it and I need 800. I owned a 7D but had to take it back because of focussing problems. I would buy another 5DII body before owning a crop camera again. I need two bodies for the work I do.

In what way did you feel that RAW gave you an advantage here? Because of the shade?

I myself have noticed that most problems with skin tones that you can get with jpeg(and raw) can in 99% of the cases be solved by fixing the exposure, WB or in dramatic cases by adding a flash, preferably a bounced one of some sort. Too dark of an exposure in the face area can for me reduce dynamics and enhance ugly redness which can be a pain to take away in PS. I usually solve that by popping on a external flash. I love using flashes. If done properly the results can very be pleasing and you're in more control.

Here is a photo taken above Rainbow Beach showing the sand blow. There is a cliff from 100 to 200 metres high that runs for about 5 miles along the beach. To the point in the distance is another mile or two. The only way to shoot it properly is by foot. You can drive a 4WD along the beach for part of the day but could get trapped if you stay when the high tide returns.

While shooting the wedding I didn't have much choice about backgrounds, etc. The couple were in the shade under a tree and that gives a green cast to the subjects. With sunshine lighting up the background it was difficult to get the white balance right. When I used Photoshop and my RAW files the process was much easier and I could set the colour temperature to where I felt gave the best skin colour. As you know, brides are very critical of photos and had I not taken RAW photos I would have disappointed her. I took this project knowing it was going to be challenging and it most certainly was. Would you believe a brand new Nikon 900 flash refused to function at that temperature? I had to use my D300 flash for fill in the group shots taken inside. What a day that was. It was the hottest day of the year and Melbourne called it Black Saturday because many people lost their lives in the bush fires raging in that state. I can't post photos of my family on the internet so can't show you any samples of the wedding.

You can see where the wedding took place under those trees. This photo taken the evening before.

Who is this Kevin person? He posts on the same forum as I do on dpreview. He loves Macs. One thing about most professional photographers is that they seldom show their photos at a reasonable size. Nope, you find snapshot sizes. How can anyone evaluate photos at that size? They are worried that someone is going to steal their photos. Well, the truth is most are not worth even saving. Just because someone makes a living from photography doesn't mean he is a great photographer. I have almost 3000 full size samples with the 5DII on my site. It was a pain to upload and took weeks. Most photographers would never post full size photos on the net.

This KHMPhoto dude has been harassing me here on Getbig so I would like to know who this guy is. If he is going to suggest unsavoury things about me then he had better be prepared for some consequences.

Here are two unprocessed shots from May 2009 at Rainbow Beach, Queensland, Australia.

I was amazed at the orange coloured sand flowing out of the bottom of the cliff. Quite incredible. It was as if someone had spilled a barrel of orange paint on the beach. Apparently the colours come from decomposed vegetation from long ago.

I am always amazed at what some look at on the internet. They post photos and links to sites I would never, ever go to. There must be some sick MF here for sure. Then they try to smear others with the shit in their heads.

Goodrum found stuff about Derek Anthony and sent it to Derek's folks. Derek spat on hapless Melvin for that deed. When we found out Melvin was gay we knew why he was on those gay sites. So by analogy we can wonder why someone keeps posting rubbish on Getbig and then attributes it to others. What a lame way to behave on a discussion board.

If you know so much about gyms go and own one and build the friggin equipment.... Face it you have nothing good to add to any discussion.

How stupid are you??? You cant get the same photo with a $200 camera on a tripod...

Resolution plays a big part in picture clarity so of course it matters...

Idiot

What are you smoking? Why wasn't their equipment good enough? The only crucial part to these shots is having a rock solid tripod. It's not a moving object so ISO capabilities is not important here. Notice how you keep on emphasizing how good the "detail" is and not how good the photo itself turned out to be.

And LOL at your previous statement that you can never have too much resolution. How big do you print? By the square meters? I seriously doubt that the quality of anyones photos depends on the resolution.

So this unsung character is Method NGA? Former drug addict from a steroid family with a brother in jail for selling steroids? This guy lives alone and comes to Getbig for the contact and likes how people can be obscene and think it is cool. 6 foot 3 1/2 and on the gear with no plans to compete. Weighs over 250 and up to 275 when off training. Either he does recreational drugs or he bodybuilds. When not training he blows up. Bloody hell, this guy needs help. Why he follows me around suggesting bullshit about young guys pissing is totally beyond comprehension. Method has gone to college and has a good vocabulary so isn't a dope. So I wonder what is driving his offensive behaviour? It sounds like he is angry at himself for not being successful in life so he takes that anger out on others. The internet provides him easy targets to make himself feel superior. He can say what he likes because he isn't being himself but just a character on the internet. I feel sorry for this guy because he said he comes to Getbig for the contact with others. Bloody hell, what a life. From what he has said about his drug habits it appears he is far from over it. He needs to take stuff to prevent the downs that eventually hit all users. When people don't have much to live for they can turn to alternatives. He won't enter a contest because he hasn't got the discipline or motivation. As soon as he feels hopeless he resorts to artificial boosts to help and away he goes again ruining his life. All that obscene and offensive behaviour is masking a very sad, pathetic and lonely individual. I certainly can't call him a man based on his behaviour here.

As I've said, if one really cares about resolution then you should shoot with film. Used film cameras are dirt cheap nowadays. Where did you get the $200 figure from?

So you're really saying that the quality of a picture depends on the amount of megapixels the camera has? Please show some proof of this.

Idiot.

Film? Now I have heard everything. Digital changes everything and makes this a hobby that is more enjoyable. We can take heaps of photos and not worry if some are not very good. I believe with the 5DII that 35mm film has been exceeded re resolution. No way I would even consider using film. Sure, those who still want to do that be my guest but the vast majority will stay with digital which is improving every year.

When I had film cameras I would be lucky to take a few 36 rolls on a holiday. Now I can take hundreds of photos in a day and have them all come out okay because I can check them after shooting every frame.

When are we going to see more examples of your art?

Film is easy and cheap to develop and to scan nowadays. I also question if you really get "hundreds and hundreds" of good photos every day. That'd be an outright amazing speed of quality production. But hey if that's your style then so be it. There's a lot of speculation on how much resolution you can get from 35mm film but generally you should get the equivalent of at least 25mp. If you step up to medium format you'll have megapixels for days. Not to mention the incredible dynamic range you get. Most serious landscape photographers uses film still, there's probably a good reason for that. Excellent film dslrs now cost much less than most entry level digital ones which gives you a whole lot back on your investment.

Digital stuff always loses value. An excellent 5dmk2 today is gonna be considered dirt in 3-4 years max. You'll always be stuck in having to acquire new gear all the time to stay "current". I admit that I too am stuck in this never ending circle, or at least used to be. Since I'll soon be occupied with doing other things than photography I haven't felt the need to purchase new stuff. A sb-600 works just fine for me, even when shooting in high speed at the red carpet etc. One really good side about digital though is the increasingly good ISO performance it delivers. It's now possible to shoot iso 12800 with a D3s with pleasing results which is insane. It's excellent for photojournalism.

But I'm totally serious when I say that you get better photo quality out of film and significantly more if you use medium format. If you really have a passion for resolution and accurate representation of colors etc you should give it a try. It is a bit more of a hassle but if you choose your photos wisely you get a whole lot more bang for the buck. If you intend to do photojournalism then sure, digital is better and way more convenient.

This may not necessarily be art or an attempt to make "art" but it's a photo that a decent amount of people have shown appreciation for. This is from when I was in Michigan and the night sky was pretty amazing so I decided to try and capture it. This is one instance where resolution does matter, but the limiting factor in this case is not the camera but the file size and size of one's computer screen. 12mp shown at 100% is gigantic. Everything in this photo that is not black that may even look like dirt in this compressed state, is a star. I'm not exactly sure what that star trail in the upper right corner is, but people told me that the international space station had passed the sky the same night I took the photo which could explain it.

Equipment used was a D300, tiny but pretty steady tripod and a 50mm/1,8 lens.

I have owned 2 1/4 systems in the past but the convenience of 35 wins for me. There is no way a medium format system would be affordable and using film is totally out of the question. I had a Rollieflex SLX and three lenses but couldn't justify keeping them at the time. The lenses would cost a lot to replace today. The 35mm format has many more lenses available plus accessories so I am sticking with this.

There is a lot of competition in the digital field and this is driving the research and development. In addition, both Canon and Nikon want to avoid mistakes like the 1DMkIII which had focussing issues. I await what Canon will deliver in their 1Ds IV t you might keep what you have instead of upgrading. I was buying every G series Canon made for several years until last year. Who would have thought a $700 camera would be a virtual throw-away in a year or so? which should be exciting. Yes, 20 years ago you bought a SLR camera and it served you well for at least a decade. A modern DSLR might last 3 years before you want to upgrade. If you don't attend camera clubs or read the interne

You are ao way off on the film remarks.  It is so more expensive, time consuming and not practical.  My friend I mentioned earlier has the largest private stock photo library in the world.  When digital became available he converted all his film into digital.  He had 4 or 5 Macs and hired 4 or 5 people who worked 8 hours a day and all they did was scan and convert into digital.  He figured he saved more than $10,000 a month in developing costs alone by switching to digital.  I was at his house once when they were doing a TV show on his technology.  He was having a photo shoot for Calvin Klein I think on the beach in front of his house.  He had his camera pluged into his computer where the photo was sent over the internet to the ad agency in new york in real time.  The text copy and layout of the ad was complete and the photos he was taken was automatically placed in the area of the ad where it was going to be.  The agency could literally see the photos and what the ad was going to look like as it was being done.  When they saw the photo they liked, they would approve it and everything was complete.  I had had quite a few photo shoots and they almost always had hassleblads (?) large format.  On the side someone would have an Instamatic and would take photos also and they would use those for laying out the photo and other shit.  I really never got into it that much.  But in any case film has really no use nowadays.

So you're saying just because your expert friend now uses digital in his line of work, film is now rendered obsolete in every thinkable application/situation? Get familiar with cameras and photos yourself instead of using your friend as an example all the time. What he uses works for him and what he does.

If you're shooting landscapes and things of that nature film actually gives you better results. Now if you need to produce hundreds or thousands of photos per month then digital may be the only feasible solution, but that really is an exception.

It was an amazing sky that night.

Explain why film is better than digital when shooting landscapes and nature.  Especially when you are shooting an action scene like a lion going after some prey and you are at the end of your roll and either have to switch cameras or reload.  And now you are out in the middle of nowhere and need to get the photos you have taken to the photo editor for the story that is going to run in two days.  Oh there are no Costcos, Sam's Clubs or placxes to develop your film for 100 miles.  Please tell me where film has any advantage over film.

Yes, some pros still use film. They claim certain film types can't be duplicated yet by digital. So I accept that it is not obsolete. However, everyone at the camera club uses digital that I talked to. So that is the way of the future. I doubt many of us enthusiasts would want to wait a few days to have our photos developed. Those days are long gone for me. I never enjoyed the dark room, either. Another hassle taken out of the experience.

Are you really this stupid? THINK before you speak.

First off, the people that still use and praise film today are the ones that usually have a lot of time to spend on their photos, they're not on a deadline and it's more about the "art" than doing documentary stuff. With that said, people still managed to do all the stuff you just mentioned prior to the 21st century. It was a pain though. Nowadays digital is used just because it's more convenient and makes things easier.

You're totally misdirected on this. I've said several times that digital now is the better solution for photojournalism, what exactly is it you don't understand?

What do you expect if you discuss photograhy on a muscle forum? Keith isn't stupid so no need to be offensive. I always try to help others with cameras. I think this is what others should do, too. As you know there is a body of photography knowledge and at best most people learn a fraction of it. The general public wouldn't know what f numbers mean.

Interesting.  Can you please tell me one (just one mind you) publication that does not set deadlines.  Just asking for one remember.  While you spend the next year trying to find one................ The people who have alot of time on their hands that actually make a substantial amount of money from photography are far and very few between.  Someone writing a book or something yes I see where taking their time is no problem.  But to say film is better than digital is just stupid.  Whatever advantages (if there are any) with film are so small that it really doesn't matter.  Take a photo with film and then with digital.  Take them with everything being exactly the same (camera, lens, settings, time, etc) and post them.  Lets see the difference.  There won't be any visually.  But, now take into account all the other shit you have to do to get that photo online.  Digital blows it away.  Also, when you take a photo with film to get it on paper or online you have to digitize it anyway.  Anyway, I am no photographer but I have been around them long enough to know a little.  And it is surprising me that you seem to know so much yet can't get it.

YES!! You get it after all!

This is exactly what I've been trying to get across! Holy moly, you've just redeemed yourself.

My point all along has exactly been that the photos do not depend on the gear. That is a principle that can be applied to all situations and not just film vs digital. You're 100% correct when you say that the actual difference between film and digital is minuscule and barely observable, especially nowadays. Back in 1999 you'd be laughed at if you made the same claim. The same is true if you compare say D300 to a 5DmkII, 99,99% of the picture depends on the photographer and not the camera.

But for the people that DO care about minuscule stuff like resolution and how the reds turn out etc film does have it's advantages. This is why I recommended it to Basile since he himself said that he cares about that sort of stuff. But for the average observer, it couldn't matter less. I myself have never seen any reason why I should shoot film when I don't need it. Hell for the most stuff I publish I'd do just fine with a 4mp camera. The other megapixels just end up clogging my harddrive.

And there people out there that makes art without deadlines, make no mistake. Everything doesn't have to have the purpose of being published in a magazine.

I actually have new found respect for you.

vince, obviously no one gives a fuck about you moonlighting as a photographer of landscapes.....when we all know your bread and butter is shooting homosexual piss fetish shoots for magazines like latin inches and honcho

your lies are getting pretty stale at this point you fat, hairy-titted creep :-\ :-\

Why do you keep saying that it's "obvious" that nobody cares about his photographic work when this very thread, and others where Vince has posted his work, shows that there is indeed some interest, if not a lot, in photography. This thread has turned from AVGB to discussions about photography now clocking in at ten pages.

And what's the deal with the gay fetish sites? How did you stumble across those (assuming you don't actively search for gay fetish sites)?

see what happens when you listen to me.  Anyway, I would never want to use film simply because of the ease of digital.  You said it is inexpensive and easy to scan and develop.  Yes maybe so but it is still time consuming and an unneccessary cost.  Like I said my friend told me he easily was saving more than $10,000  month just from developing costs of film.  That's not including the cost of film.  Digital has made photography so much more obtainable and affordable to the common person.   No matter what you take great photos and what I have seen from Basile he takes great photos too.  So there shouldn't be a problem.

Sure, digital is way more practical that's also why I personally use it. No offense though, but your friend is in a VERY unique spot with that kind of business. Most photographers don't even have a quarter of that kind of workload. So he is an exception in most cases.

I've found my old external hdd and there is some stuff in there from a couple years back. Some of it I'm pretty happy with, others I would have done differently today. This is from when I just started out. Either way, some may find it interesting to look at, good or not.

What I have been working on mostly since these photos were taken is to minimalize everything and make it simpler. Less details and more quality. To make sure there's a pattern or something for the eye to hold on to.

Some more. I seem to have discovered photoshop right around the time nr 8 was taken  ;D

EDIT: I swear #5 hasn't been photoshopped, the bird hid its head. It's probably why I saved that particular photo, looks pretty funny.

At least he was there hanging around Lee Priest's booth.

I was the master and he was the pupil in real life. Make no mistake about that.
and the old ugly fuck makes fun of me ....  hes gross
