I squatted too heavy about 2 weeks ago. Got 2 reps and hung it up. Nothing went pop, no pain during the squat.
The next couple days my lower back was aching, then it went away. Squatted light and again had serious pain in the lower back the next couple days. Pain went away.
Now I haven't squatted or deadlifted but the pain is there again, came back on its own a week later. Wtf. Feels like I'm a little hunched forward. Can't arch my back without shooting pain (just tried to lie down to bench and gave up). Going through a squatting movement is wicked painful. Can't walk without occasional shooting pain. Doesn't feel like the spine tho, more like I've just got really tight muscles. Stretching seems to help for about 30 seconds before everything tightens up again. Strain or pull maybe?
Yes, I'll go to the doctor if it persists. What say the doctors of Getbig?

Trapped sciatic nerve,i had one for years,couldn`t bear to have 1 plate on my shoulders for squats,then 3 years ago i bought some inversion boots,hung upside down from a chinning bar for a minute and by the 3 rd day of trying this my back was fine.Never had a problem since and i make sure i hang upside down for 1 minute a couple of times a week.

Did it hurt while hanging? I've tried hanging rightside up and it's not too pleasant. Might give it another shot tho.

Yes with a back injury the slightest things will cause pain like tieing your shoes. I injured my back years ago doing deadlifts, it still flairs up now and then. The only relief I got was from a chiropractor aligining the spine. Now when it flairs up I can "pop" my back on my own much like a chiropractor does. Ibuprofen works for pain.

If I just arch my back it shoots pain dead center, but when I'm out walking around it will shoot on the left or right, particularly on the side if I step down with, like off a curb or something.

I can still lift things ok it seems right now, like the dog because he's too old to jump into the van, although I haven't tried anything heavy. Seems like more of a posture problem.
I'll consider a chiro too if it doesn't start healing up. And ya I went to the pharmacy and loaded up with drugs. Currently running a 2 painkiller w/opiates + Jim Beam stack. ;D

I couldnt remember what set mine off last time than riding my motorcycle the fucker is heavy so maybe just turning and stuff set it off.

Couple years ago I was going to be THE BIG MAN and help a 'lil lady move a small cabinet. Halfway to my van POW my back goes. She's carrying the other side of the thing and asking me if I'm alright and I'm squeeking set it down! set it down!

Haven't had a flare up in a year now....they were happening about once a month before I went.
I used to sell the inversion boots and tables and they are great, BUT I would suggest getting checked by a doc first. Just make sure you aren't going to make the problem worse.

Doesn't happen that bad every time tho, and this lower back is nothing by comparison. It's just pissing me off because I want a workout but don't want to make it any worse. Doesn't sound anything near to yours tho. Were you pulling a lot when you hurt it or was it just a freaky bad luck kind of thing?

haha, it did suck....the episodes got closer and closer together and I grew up NEVER going to the doctor unless it was the emergency room...the last straw was when I bent over to pick up some leaves and the next thing I knew my knees had buckled and I was looking straight up at the sky. And I was leary of chiro's too. You hear so many mixed opinons, but i think the thing is that they can't fix everybody, but man if you are one they can fix it's a great thing!

Well when I hurt mine I was doing 585 lbs on my 5th rep I got a pain in my back had to lay on the floor awhile, then shit hit the fan the next day I couldnt move for a week. Serious man Chiro is the best Show vouches for them as well, I found some yoga movements that help me now when a flair up occurs so I dont go to the Chiro anymore just work on it myself.

Something else to try that is cheap, are the foam rollers. Get a fairly firm one. A few years ago a bunch of the Carolina Hurricanes started stopping in and ordering them, so I gave one a shot.....they can bring some good relief too.

I once used a tennis ball under me on the bed to try to locate the muscle in spasm on my upper back and concentrate on relaxing it. Sounds kooky but it seemed to help.

Yea study the yoga movements these really help, bascically now when I have a flair up I do stretches and yoga. Another good thing is to hang from a chin bar with weight attached this lengthens the spine taking away pressure.

Been living with a dodgy lower back for years. The one thing I found that really helps is doing those standing stick twists. Keeps the area loose and fluid. And I don't use a belt to squat anymore. Haven't had an episode in a long while. *crosses fingers*

I never use a belt for squats, they strengthen the lower back if done properly. A belt takes away from this unless you powerlift no need for a belt.

These pills work pretty good when you double the dose and then take them with a double dose of some other pills and then a few glasses of bourbon. Didn't have much luck hanging earlier today but might go give it another shot in a minute, assuming I can still grip the bar at this point.

Tbh I have put on some weight recently because I'm hellbent on nailing a few lifts. Probably not 20% but definitely over 15. Better change my name to The Slug.

Ya, I seem to have a history of thinking I'm still 18, never thinking about prehab until it's time for rehab, etc. Definitely time to accept that workout time is going to have to include warmup and stretching time, and not some bullshit 60 second good-enough nonsense. Sounds like a good one to incorporate, doc. My rotational strength and range of motion is pretty poor.

Stop doing all leg and lower back training for a month and get 2-3 deep tissue massages (the non-tbombz kind) a week for a month.
Also, consider chiropractic (if you don't already have one try one that does x-rays).

Yes, I deserve a massage! There's a sports massage place just up the road from me. Too easy.
And will definitely hold off on lower half training until I know what's up. As the curse of the chickenlegs continues. ugh.

The reality is that as you get older heavy lifting is less and less of a good idea. Why? Because as we age, muscles get tighter viz. less flexibility, and muscle strains become more prevalent.
For overall back health, may I suggest a firm mattress. They're generally rated from 1-5 with 1 being the firmest. A 2 is the way to go.

Earlier today when I came home I dropped my keys - for a second I thought about the pain in my lower back and said fuck it I don't think I will be able to pick them up.
So I kicked them to the frontdoor one bit at a time, that neighbor who got out of the car looked at me like I am crazy when I asked him if he can please pick them up :D

As you get older you do gradually "shrink" in height,all those years of gravity compressing your spine until finally something touches a nerve.First time i used inversion boots it felt weird within seconds,all the blood rushes to the head,and as i hung down my fingertips were about an inch off the floor.Next morning one side of my hip was sore,like it was dropping back into place,but i used them again and the next morning the opposite hip was sore.Only this time my fingers were now touching the floor and when i got down the back pain was virtually gone.I was 44 the first time i used them,wish i`d have had them 20 years ago.

Very true. Out of curiosity one day, I measured myself before and after the inversion table.....it was almost an inch difference. It didn't stay that way of course, but just puts things in perspective aboud how much our spine is compressed.

Give it some rest - first stage for 1 to 3 months (depending on how bad it is) - dont do any bent over rows, seated cable rows, squats, leg press (unless they are partials), rear lateral raises (unless you are lying on a bench), or even heavy dumbell presses or shrugs or anthing where you have to yank heavy dumbells or pick them up from the rack - you get the idea, anything where your back is bent over with weight interferes with the rest stage. A typical back workout can be: lat pulldowns or chinups, hammer strength rows (since you chest is resting against a pad), followed by t-bar rows (the kind where your chest is pressed against a pad too, and dumbell pullovers. None of these exercises put much strain on your lower back.
After a little while start to do hyperextensions and/or light weight on the lower back machine where yous it and push a pad backwards which rests on your upper back and start light deadlifts like 135 to 225 lbs.
Listen to your body, when when you think you're ready more or less go back to your normal workouts, but probably still do hack squats (or even front squats) instead of traditional squats, deadlift a bit lighter than usual but with more strict form and higher reps, etc.
And always stretch it, practically every time you are in the gym.

This sounds very promising. I'm 37 and can't spare an inch. These backward Aussies are bound to have one somewhere so I'll see if I can track it down for a trial run.

Cheers Bob. Ya I'll lay off anything that stresses the area until I'm feeling confident, and then come back slow and careful.
Honestly, it's not that bad. I can pick things up just fine mostly. It's bending the other way that seems to be the main issue, arching my back and sticking my stomach out or even just getting straight. Like lying down on the flat bench didn't go well earlier.
I lift at home which is probably for the best since I obviously have enough ego issues without trying to impress cardio bunnies. I've got a rack and a multistation tho so I can find some of the options that you mentioned. I'll have to make a rule that if I don't do the warmup I don't do the workout, and it ain't over until the stretching is done.
What's so weird is that I thought I made a full recovery, no soreness or anything for a week, and then just woke up fucked a week later. And the worst part is that I can't even remember if it was a nice & dirty dream.

The only drag was when I'd sit up to reach my feet and there'd be a jolt as I passed horizontal, but it didn't follow me around.
Moral of the story is: going to get an inversion table and see how I fare. And keep away from lower back work for awhile, of course. Thanks for the advice. Getbig continues to deliver!

I'm on 5/3/1 3 cycle so weight is still light - I never have any problems with squats but most of the time with deadlifts

My sister's a physio and she has a table, likes it and uses it. I've tried it. It's relaxing and the back does slowly unkink. I just find one of the sticks in the gym and carry it around with me while I work out, doing a set then doing 30-40 twists, etc. Done the chiro (waste of $) and direct lower back work (total overkill when you're doing squats, etc. ). Get recovered from this episode Tape and find something that you like, and can easily incorporate that keeps the area both relaxed and toned. I've thrown my back out sneezing so I know this kind of stuff is no joke. Good luck.

My sister's a physio and she has a table, likes it and uses it. I've tried it. It's relaxing and the back does slowly unkink. Just go see a physical therapist right away. Backs are nothing to mess with. I only have 75% function in one of my calves because of ignorance, more or less. Get on it.

Response to the first post, if the pain is not in the middle/lower lumbar chances are it could be be just a QL strain providing its either on the left or side of the lower lumbar. If that's the case, rest, ice and ibuprofin. Didn't read through all of the posts so if this was already addressed, sorry.

I was just praising Australia to the rafters in another thread, but there are some things that piss me right off. Saturday? Closed. Sunday? Closed. Tomorrow Monday? Holiday. Closed. Fuckin' slackers.
Some inversion has worked wonders but if I've got any doubts on Tuesday I'll knock off work early and get in.

Haven't used any ice but rest & painkillers were done & done. After some inverted stretching tho, feeling much much better. The peculiar thing is that it was fine for a week and then came back painful with no real reason why. Could be facing a strain as well as compression issues tho, since it's not like I've been magically cured completely, so I won't consider myself out of the woods for at least a few weeks.

One more suggestion, and i know it sounds very odd, but try sleeping with a pillow between your knees, if you sleep on your side. A lot of back injuries linger because of bad posture when we sleep.

If you have problems again you might want to check out Prolotherapy. I went to a chiro at least 70x after a car accident. It would only relieve pain temporarily. Then I tried Prolotherapy. Felt a lot better after the 1st treatment and ended up only having 3 treatments over a year period.

I squatted too heavy about 2 weeks ago. Got 2 reps and hung it up. Nothing went pop, no pain during the squat.
The next couple days my lower back was aching, then it went away. Squatted light and again had serious pain in the lower back the next couple days. Pain went away.
Now I haven't squatted or deadlifted but the pain is there again, came back on its own a week later. Wtf. Feels like I'm a little hunched forward. Can't arch my back without shooting pain (just tried to lie down to bench and gave up). Going through a squatting movement is wicked painful. Can't walk without occasional shooting pain. Doesn't feel like the spine tho, more like I've just got really tight muscles. Stretching seems to help for about 30 seconds before everything tightens up again. Strain or pull maybe?
Yes, I'll go to the doctor if it persists. What say the doctors of Getbig?

Tape just read this. Exactly what happened to me back in 1983. But my lower back did pop. I remember sitting on the bench and nothing hurt . I went to the front desk and told the guy what happened and said I have no idea what happened but I am going home. At the time I lived about two miles from the gym and I walked. Well about less than a block from my house I literally curled up and went to the ground right in the middle of the sidewalk. I was there for about 10 minutes or so and could not move. A friend of mine so happened to be walking by saw me and asked me what was wrong. I told him and he helped me to my room. Well I was stuck in my apartment for several hours and finally got up enough power to drive myself to a medical clinic in Manhattan Beach. I didn't want to go to the hospital. Well they told me what happened and that I need to get an operation or it would continue to hurt. I went to a rehab clinic and did therapy for a few months. The girl that helped me ended up being my girlfriend and later the mother of my two daughters. Anyway for the next two years I wore a back brace as much as possible and two of those TENS units to shoot electricity up and down my spine. At the same time I hurt my back my hurts his in the same place. he had an operation and three months later it happened again. so I am happy I did no operation. But, my lower back goes out every once in a while and it hurts unreal. I have collapsed in an elevator before. And I tell everyone I just have a hurt back. It has happened in the middle of a store where I just end up on the floor with people walking around me. Now that happened in many years. Now that I have such a big belly though it makes it hurt. not so much pain but more uncomfortable. anyway whenever you hurt your lower back it is there forever. Sorry man

That sounds like a bad one, Keith. Not sure if I did a fresh injury or just inflamed an existing problem but it wasn't bad enough to put me down, thankfully. Definitely don't want to make things any worse so I'm considering quitting back squats for good. No matter what you won't find me acting like there's no danger of injury. If I lose my back I'll lose my work, so it's just not worth it.

get a pair of inversion boots and just hang around for a while if this don't help your screwed.

I'm definitely a fan of inversion sessions. Did some lying on an angled plank and it helped a lot. Going to check out an inversion table today. The boots are cheaper and probably provide more exercise options in the long run, and even sound more comfortable from the reviews I've read, but since it's for treating an injury I want something that will get me upright with a minimum of strain.

after you hop[efully get relief i'd switch to doing front squats you have to use less weight and they work your thighs from different angles, it's like a progression when you can't do regular squats you switch to front squats than the next best thing is squatting with two dumbells than back supported hack squats or laying leg presses. and finally when you reach old age your happy to just get sets with leg ext and leg curls.

Even so, a bit of bodyweight traction helped a lot. Stands to reason that lifters would have experience with this. It's not like anyone told me to get naked on the roof and chew an onion.
