Well I know since everyone here is so interested in holding on to their 225lb sub 5% frame, they probably would not dream of jogging away precious muscle. But for those of you who can actual walk more than a block, what is your opinion of jogging a few times a week for cardio? Do you feel like it would burn muscle, or is bob chick treadmill walk more your speed?
-
I run 4 days a week and do cardio 6 days a week overall. As long as you are taking in the proper amount of carbs you will waste very little muscle.
-
Too late for you to be Mr. Olympia MichaelScott, just do yourself a favor and do the cardio.
-

;)
I run daily, mostly on the treadmill as it is cold outside or unless it snows and the gym is closed. But I agree with Georgie
-
Running kicks ass, it is BY FAR the hardest form of aerobic exercise. Although, I wouldn't advise running more than 35 miles a week.

Horseshit....run 5 miles and then attempt to swim 5 miles.....no comparison.

Agreed. i can run 6 miles no problem but probably couldnt swim a quarter mile.
-
I jog 5 miles every morning, haven't missed a day in 9 months..
-
Then how's come runners SMOKE swimmers when it comes to Vo2 max ratings? I'd be willing to bet that elite runners could much closer match a swimmers performance than a swimmer could match a runners performance.
-
:o
i'd buy a pair of asics running shoes if lolo lets me run with her.

Quit trolling and go out and swim 5 miles.....prove something.

I run almost everyday. It's the best way I've found to keep weight off.
It seems like once you reach a certain level of fitness, where your not in pain the whole time, running can be very therapuetic.
I'm going to try my first 1/2 marathon this year in June in San Diego.
:P
-
I ran like 4-5 times both outside and on a treadmill, had at least 1 swim, + 1 full body workout with weights every week. Worked pretty well actually, I was able to maintain good amount of mass and strength. Now that Im back on the horse again I did no cardio what so ever during my off season, and Im only going to slowly incorporate cardio during my diet. But whenever Im just maintaining its all about cardio and stayin healthy. Enjoy it a lot too actually. :)
-
I run my mouth on here. That's about the extent of my running.
-
i run probably more than anyone here except newmom, and active military....i hate it....but it offers too many benefits, therefor essential...

There you go again. Always trying to get on some list. ;D
-
swimming may be more all-roiund effective but running certainly 'sucks more' and 'feels' much harder and more intense
-
I considered running for the cure of boredom and for its theraputic qualities.
but then was like, fuck it I'll just walk.
-
my jogging consists of me following my overweight, bicycle riding, African American Trainer while I wear a pink sweat suit
-
i'm going to start doing sprints and that thing Onlyme did with a tire or weight while I walk

sprints are the single most hardcore workout a human can do

I Spy! ;D
-
Running was the only thing that helped me lose weight when I hit a plateau. It has been a couple years and I am fat again but will be hitting the park when the weather heats up. For now I half ass it on the treadmill while watching the girls on the stairmasters.
-
I Spy! ;D
;D ;D
congrats on all of you old farts who got that reference.
-

Sprints 2 days a week and a jog 2 days a week is what I've found best for fat loss and all around fitness
-
I jog, I guess you'd say. Once or twice a week in the snow.
They have this program for the iphone, RunKeeper. It uses GPS and ANT+ to track how far you've ran, and show your heart rate.
It's decent.
It also public embarrasses you into doing a better job by posting to facebook and twitter.
-
I run 2 miles as hard as possible Mon and Fri, run at least 5 miles on Wed. I run outdoor trails up into the mountain. Running hard uphill takes a special sickness.
-
I row. Low impact, near full body involvement, get to watch a vid.
-
these days i mostly stick to NOEXPLODE for cardio.
-
I dont run but i ride my bike to and from the gym.
-
For those of you who sprint, how do you set up your workouts? How much do you do, how often, how intense, etc?
I haven't done any cardio in months, but these days my workouts suck so much I barely get any exercise at all. I feel like I just sit around all day, so I may want to get back into cardio.
I remember back in the day I hated sprinting, cause I didn't do it frequently enough and would just go all out every time. I think I need to hold back a little or I'll always end up overdoing it.
-
I use the mountainbike to go outside for fitness. All muscle and no endurance is stupid.
-
my thigh muscles are so big i can barely walk anymore let alone run.
-
Cant, I trip over my penis.

I run 4 times a week. Most effective cardio there is imo. One of the reason it is so effective, is that it takes so little subjective effort in relation to energy expenditure.
I have also had no problem building strength and muscle while running. One caution: do not run if you are very heavy. Your knees and/or hips will not like it.

I gotta agree Show.
DJ181, about a month before my first marathon I was at my cousins wedding. The hotel I was staying at had a pool. At this point I was running 8-10 miles a day. Cripes after 5 laps in the pool I was like this shit is kicking my ass. Most triathlons, swimming is the shortest part

which brings me to a question. Why do MOST gyms put the stairmasters in the front row and all other cardio equipment behind them.
-
It's idiotic to say swimming 5 miles is the same as running 5 miles. That's like saying running 5 miles is the same as biking 5 miles. The Gold Standard of aerobic power is Vo2 max, and elite runners pwn elite swimmers with Vo2 max ratings. But, the best to the best, Vo2 max wise is cross-country skiers.
-

i believe running early in the morning on an empty stomach helps to burn fats!!..
i was running on my treadmill 3 times a week then i stopped after buying my dog as i walk him 45-60 minutes every day!!..

then go swim 5 miles and prove us wrong.....funny how all of us who have actually done both....me and newmom and some others are saying the exact same thing.
-
I run 3 days a week.....I don't jog. I run 1.5 miles as fast as I can on the treadmill just to get that shit over with. I don't do it to lose fat, I just do it...no sure why though because I fucking despise it!!

That's a good plan splank, running just enough to get ya fit and keep bodyfat levels in check, while not running so much that it becomes catabolic. Also running, not jogging, is key. I think that one can run 20 miles max, weekly, before it becomes catabolic.
-
Your mom jogs and i run behind her.
-
Cant, I trip over my penis.
I had the same problem when I started, now I just staple it to my chest while I run, works great.
-

That is my thought behind it. I have to be very careful, I f I run to much, I drop weight way to fast. Like you said, I run just enough to feel I am somewhat fit. I run a few 5ks a year with the Mrs, but she runs relatively slow (9:30 miles) so it really isn't an issue. Back in the day, late 90s, I was running at least 4 miles a day 5 days a week....I dropped clear down to 175lbs....looked like I was a HIV victim. Never again!
-
Your mom jogs and i run behind her.
I'm calling bullshit! One thing my lazy ass mother doesn't do....is run!!!

I like to run, although for the last few years I have gone in spurts where all I want to do is run or all I want to do is lift. Doing both at the same time without feeling like you're wasting your time with one or the other is pretty tough imho.

I don't know how you can do that bench on two hours sleep but good for you. I did a weighted vest a few times just walking fast and that was enough for me
-
You do that every day bench??

it gets kind of tough with the plate carrier, and such...but the hard part is the thigh mount holster, and carrying the weapon while running, but i am used to it since it is kind of routine.....the guys i am suppose to be running with suck ass at this...i am going to be the only one that graduates this one..
bench
-
You do that every day bench??
i was just running 4-10 miles balls out every day...but i cut the miles back to 6 at the most....and added in a max of 4 with the gear on 2 weeks ago in prep for a class...

It's good, down here all day for football.
Do you have to put petroleum jelly on your nipples from all the running? I learned about that from How I Met Your Mother
-
What kind of clips are y'all running your miles in? When I say "clips" I mean at what pace, 6 min miles, 7 min miles, etc.

I've heard that females who run a lot eventually develop calluses on their nipples.

Perhaps newmom should post pics of these calluses, just so I can identify them in the future.

I ran 2 miles in 14:28 this AM, personal best for me. Outside, gravel mountain road, nice big hill to get things started. :P

Not bad man, not bad ;) A 7 min per mile pace is pretty damn respectable ;D

Damn near kills my fat ass to do it. ;D
My goal for this year is to run 3 miles in under 20min, I`m a long way from that.

Just started back up 2 weeks ago. In highschool I ran the 800 4x800 400 and 4x00 I was really fast in great shape. Running comes natural to me. I hope my endurance comes back quickly! So far it's been rough. I've been doing walk run for 3 miles. Evertime I can go further and further without walking. In couple of weeks Ill start mixing in speed work.

Hey Mak25, what was yo best 800 time? I broke 2 min in high school 1:56 ;D
-
wow that awesome I never got below 1:59. I think If I had some better coaching I would of gone a lot lower. Are coaches didn't help us at all. I ran a pretty good open 400 50 seconds.

That's a damn good 400 man ;) Remember the 400 is considered the man's race ;D Did you also run cross-country? Our coach was a good coach, but I think our half mile repeat day was a bit much, he had us run 10 800 timed intervals with the goal of improving our times each and every week.
-

Wow ten 800s would suck man. We did a lot of repeat 400 tried to get them below 70 seconds. Then we did distance running once or twice a week. The coach I had my senoir year kind of let me go on my own and train bymyself. When doing interval training you really need someone there yelling at you to go faster you need that push. I played football and ran indoor track also.
When I was really young my dad had me running 3-5 miles at least 4 times a week. I was always in way better shape than everyone around me because of him.
-
400m is insane.
-
Yeah, the 400 is an all out sprint, at least with the 800 you can pace yourself a bit.

Ran it once in HS. Us football guys ran with track team. I sub one time. Had no respect for anything beyond 200m b/c I never had to run it. After that one race, my body shut down completely at finish line. All I remember was turning past 200 meters on that turn and I was right there with pack hauling a$$ then last 200 was body folding like a tent, thighs burning inside, back tightening, no oxygen...just falling apart. LOL
I have mad respect for the 400m to this day. My little brother used to kill it in HS, not sure where he got that stamina. My mother was a sprinter through college and she told me she never ran the 4.

A couple of times I came out way to fast had a nice lead on everyone. Last hundred meters my legs would freeze up sometimes. You got to pump your arms as hard as you can that can help to move your legs. Man I had a gas tank back then.
