Title: Train like a powerlifter, look like a powerlifter
Post by: bic_staedtler on April 15, 2011, 01:02:46 AM
I'd like to rant about bodybuilder wannabes and other goons in the gym who do plenty of olympic lifts in their training programs.  These guys use the excuse of "powerlifters are BIG!" as their sole reason for training with weight that's way too heavy for them for low reps...because powerlifters are big.

Well.  I tell ya what.  I'm all for keeping basics like benches, squats and deads in a bodybuilding program...that's smart.  But going for singles, doubles, triples...wtf?

There's a reason you never see a ripped powerlifter.  Train like a powerlifter, look like a powerlifter.  Train like a bodybuilder, you'll look like a bodybuilder.  For some reason you just never see these guys in the gym dieted down, nor do they look anything other than a big bulk of mass.

At least be honest with yourself and admit that you train for strength and not much else.  That I can respect.  But shitting on bodybuilding methods because so-and-so powerlifter has with huge legs trains heavy with low reps is foolish.

That is all.

Some valid points but not entirely true. There are many variables here. Peope respond in different ways to the same training programs. Nutrition has to be taken into consideration.

Worse than Nascar. Worse than competetive fishing.

Yes, those strength athletes, when will they learn that the bodybuilding lifestyle of schmoe fellatio, ice machines, grapefruit sodomy and middle of the road training is the way to true dieselness;).

In reality, it's the eating patterns(of the Heavys) and training around the gear that causes most of them to look the way they do.

If you're willing to pump your body full of drugs, it doesn't matter if you're a powerlifter or bodybuilder, you're going to get big muscles.

Thanks for all the pics.

Being a powerlifter myself, but first trained to look like a bber, I must say that powwerlifting is much more functional than training to be a pageant. Powerlifters are actually athletes, bbers are not. Terms of comparison must be made at the same level, so if you speak in a "world level bber" ::) you need to compare it to a top powerlifter of the same bodyweight, but I must warn you that being on a thong isn't criteria to establish the camparison. powerlifters own bbers by a mile. powerlifting is actualy an extreme sport!

i agree with op...doing singles, doubles etc every once in a while can maybe give you certain density but in general it's all about muscle stimulation...and your pecs don't know if you're free benching or pumping with a bowflex...your tendons, ligaments and/or other stuff i don't kknow or give a shit about might sense the difference but that's not relevant in bodybuilding...in fact i think making your tendons etc too strong can be detrimental in bb'ing...and too much mid-section stimulation makes your waist bigger!

you have a point bro...no one's saying bb'ing is superior to pl'ing, or otherwise...what we are saying is that they are different and need different approaches regarding training, nutrition and drugs ofc...i personally much prefer bb'ing but i do have quite many powerlifter friends training at the asme gym with me and yes, they are a lot more hardcore when it comes to training but we bodybuilders are more extreme when it comes to drugs! ;D

the modern movement of 'power building' has a lot of young hardcore guys transfixed and they scream blue murder if you question it

i remember a guy who trained at our gym around the same level as me, he would kill me poundage wise, and he pulled a realy good mean face.... but i could bury him at ease on stage, even using half the poundage on most exersizes

I predict a 50 pages thread... I quit training like a bber because it was not functional... since 2006 I train and compete in powerlifting and let me tall you that powerlifting is a fucking insane sport, it takes anyone to the limit and beyond. I mix it with boxing lessons at saturdays and it is great! I have more aerobic ability, speed and strength at 109kgs than I had with 96kgs, trying to be a bber ::)

"bodybuilding training" is just fine as long as it works for you, but if you never do any singles doubles or triples then the weight on the bar wont be increasing fast enough for you to grow optimally.. need to train strength too

Of course it does, you can just bounce the bar off your chest, if you get flabby enough it could just be 2 or 3" rom

but at some point you realize you're a fat blob, a whale and in public there is no difference between you and an obese sloth because random people in public don't know you can bench 405 or whatever.

There are exceptions. The guys in restricted weight classes are forced to be lean. Most heavies aren't lean though, and I believe it stems more from than just being lazy in the dietary department.

Give more credit and benefit of doubt where it's due.

Most here that call someone at fatass that can handle 2-3 times their weight won't hold much weight (no pun) to their opinion. Walk the walk first.

I have no interest in handling that much weight, I work out to have flexibility and be [somewhat] healthy and fit not to walk around like a retard with a t-shirt that says part of the 405 club or some cheesy shit like that, who are you kidding dude, what role does squatting 650 have in today's society ?!! I'm pretty confident I could put said man in a coma with a few well placed strikes, if not he'd probably have a heart attack trying to hit me while I run circles around him :)

Powerlifting fucks up your body. Injuries happen a lot.

Bodybuilding style training is a lot more healthy and safe. You can bodybuild until you're 60 with no injuries if you do it wisely.

Powerlifting is Kamikaze. You just wrecklessly lift insane weights with disregard for health.

  Not really.

Many sports MIGHT give you some injuries if you do it for a decade or more.

In powerlifting all it take is a split second mistake and you'l be fucked up.

I've been bicycling for 15 years and havn't got injured yet. Besides when I crashed and broke my hand.

I played baseball for 10 yars and never got injured at all.

Theres that split second mistake you were talking about......could very well have broken your neck!! :o

 Well I was being stupid.

I was bombing down a steep hill at about 35 mph and lost control.

Bicycleing is very, very safe if you just control your downhill speed.

I see your point though. Every sport carries SOME risk. Even walking down the street carries a risk. The question is, how much?

And powerlifting is a lot more risky than most other sports.

One time I had pin-lock dumbells. The pin came off while I was doing dumbell presses and a bunch of 5 pound plates smashed my face. Luckily it didn't break any bones in my face just gave me a black eye and cut me.

ALso i've minorly pulled muscles a few times.

You are a moron, eat like a powerlifter look like a powerlifter. Eat like a bodybuilder look like a bodybuilder. The excercises you do has nothing with how fat you get, it's what you put in your mouth that will make the difference.

or

Obviously you didn't read the part where I said I'm all for keeping the staples of the big three lifts.  Everyone of the guys above did strength training, but could actually diet properly and LOOK like bodybuilders.  And the all trained for reps to build that size; those of you who believe that Ronnie built his mass using triples haven't paid attention when he himself admitted that those insane lifts you see in his videos are done for shock value.  His usual routines were always above ten reps on almost all exercises.

My rant is about lard-ass powerlifters in the gym (and it's true, I couldn't tell you the difference between Olympic lifters or powerlifters, but big fucking deal: they ALL train stupid low reps) who go on an on preaching to anyone who's bored enough to listen that their style of training produces big muscles.  Well guess what: who wants big muscles if its covered in fat and you look like a rotund barrel?  Nobody, that's who.  But that doesn't stop them from backing up their claims of their "high intensity, low reps" training builds muscle more efficiently than standard bb'ing practices of the last three decades.  It doesn't.  It won't.

Injuries?  BB'ers get injured by attempting stupid heavy weight for stupid low reps.  Powerlifters get injured because that's the results of pushing that kinda weight; over time, you're bound to get injured, simple as that.

Mariusz P is about the only powerlifter/strength athelete who doesn't look like a fat mess I can think of at the moment.  But even he trains like a bodybuilder when he's not training for strength competition....because he has the DISCIPLINE to diet properly, and that's the big problem that these powerlifter guys don't grasp.  Anybody can heave around weights and get big...anybody.  But most people in the gym are there to LOOK GOOD.  So stop listening to these fat fucks whose goals are completely opposite of the reason why MOST people are in the gym: to LOOK GOOD.

That is all.

"bodybuilding training" is just fine as long as it works for you, but if you never do any singles doubles or triples then the weight on the bar wont be increasing fast enough for you to grow optimally.. need to train strength too

how optimal do you think your growth will be when you tear a pec on one of your singles?

Yes he has the discipline to eat a diet of chocolate and sausages.

Quote from: Pudz
“My energy comes from my diet. Breakfast is 10 eggs and 2-3 pounds of bacon. Between meals, I eat lots of candy…I need it for energy. Lunch, at 1 or 2 p.m., is a double meal of a Polish pork chop, sauerkraut and potatoes.

An hour later, I work out, then take lots of supplements: magnesium, creatine, amino acids, all that stuff, and more chocolate.

Dinner is whatever meat I can get: steaks, pork chops, bacon, plus more sauerkraut and potatoes. [After I work out] I have a protein shake and more chocolate.”

Anybody can heave around weights and get big...anybody.

If that's you in the pic then you will never be big. You will never look anything like Pudz of Estep of Konstantin. You can try all you want, take all the drugs in the world - will not happen. Not only because of your twink physical genetics but also because of your twinkish mental constitution.

Neither PL or BB should be done to look "good", since by that most mean attracting females. Do bodybuilding if you want to look "good" in the sense of attracting homos like GayBay.

Correct me if I'm wrong! If u are not into drugs I would say heavy powerlifting training will give u 10 times more result than bb workouts with high volume short rest and light weights and going for the feel and pump...

Every teenagers I have seen who start with powerlifting actually get some muscles, while "bodybuilding" teens get nothing before they start using roids...

Absolutely correct. Now powerlifting will not give you much muscle either without drugs but you can get a certain dense and strong look to your body. Bodybuilding, unless you have extremely good genetics, will do close to nothing. You will look twinkish, like BlackStar.

Who says you have to do one or the other. Huge powerful looking muscles with good definition is really what one should shoot for. People tend to only focus on one or the other and I think Powerlifting movements are absolutely necessary to build the ultimate physique. Ive always based my bodybuilding training around the compound basics bench squat dead ect. At least one mass builder for every muscle and some detail exercises at the end. Fat slob powerlifters arent appealing to me and neither is a 240lb bodybuilder with a pencil neck that cant even deadlift twice his own weight. There is something in between you know. And theres nothing worse than an all drugs weak bodybuilder

These lean powerlifters do look great.

The problem with that physique is that it requires a LOT of food and drugs and work to maintain. It's not really practical. To have that kind of physique you have to make your lifestyle revolve around your training and eating and steroids.

If those guys went to jail for a month they would come out 40 pounds lighter probably.

Fuck all that. I'd rather go for a physique that does not require me to sacrifice tons of time, money and my health.

Nah, I did them when I became 50 because I felt like it , also I thought that I would have to be in good shape, if I had a barbell tatoo in my shoulder otherwise it would look rediculous 8)
That's cool, man. Good fysique.

neither are olympic sports . bodybuilding is more or less a sport and powerlifting is plagued by too much supportive stuff

Powerlifting with all the gimmicks they use to lift is just nonsense. I saw a powerlifting friend in the gym who is about 5'6" and 180lbs tell me he can bench 405lbs. He first put on his power lifting shirts that looked like a straight jacket. He bent his body into an inverted V. He took a deep breath. His range of motion was just about nothing. His elbow joint barely bent at the lowest point. Just nonsense. He can't do more push ups than me. Using a hammer strength bench where he can't cut the range of motion he can't do 4-45lbs a side on the machine because he can't budge the weight from the starting point.

Low half squat that power lifters are calling a full squat with a suit is also bs. I watch these guys "squatting" 650 plus and they don't have enough power in their legs to touch the rim of a basketball rim.  What good is the "power" they are developing?

The sumo deadlift is used so they can cut the range of motion.

The real sport of strength is Olympic lifting. Pick up a bar from the floor and put it over head. No gimmicks. You need strength and power to complete the lift. Any football player who starts doing power cleans can back me up that they saw an immediate gain in jumping and sprinting ability. When an Olympic lifter squats they bury it. They don't do a hip lock as Mike Bridges use to call squats.

Geared power lifting and raw power lifting are two different sports.

That is all.
in other words

"im a big fat idiot who doesnt know when to put the fork down, because im such a fat swine ,i will declare myself powerlifter so ppl know that i do some kind of sports"

really one of the dumber ones on getbig

I've said it before. I could train powerlifting for 6 weeks and become quite wealthy on the senior natural powerlifting circuit.
