Title: Good red wines?
Post by: Swede! on January 13, 2012, 12:24:54 PM
So. I never drink alcohol especially after discovering cannabis.

But, my mothers brother (dont know he word in englishol) brought a bottle of red wine to xmas dinner. Which tasted Awesome. Not the random after taste which wine usually has.

So. I have decided to drink a glas of red wine during the weekend. Anyone here drink wine? Bay? (no homo)

This is the cheap red wine Im currently drinking. Not the best, but not That bad either.

i like the wine from spain and portugal. even though they are less frequent in winestores across europe and even more in the US, because of the small production, that is, if you compare it to france's production...

there's a sea of good wine if you try to look a bit off from the obvious

yep, mothers brother = morbror
       Fathers brother = farbror

Mor = mother
Far = father
Bror = brother

but far/mor isn't Super commonly used.
Mamma = mother
pappa = father
is a lot more common.

older people refer to their parents at mor or far usually.  well I do at times also. it depends on the situation

I've just started liking red wine myself. My brother has been a wine snob for years and kind of got me started on it. First, you need to experiment with the different kinds, Cabs, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chianti etc to see what you prefer. From there you can do some google searches to see how particular wines rate.

I've kind of grown to like the Pinot Noir and Merlot after starting with Cabs and Chianti. The fun part is trying different labels looking for the ones you prefer. Estancia is one of my favorite labels for under $12 and my go to when I don't fill like risking the chance on a bad bottle. Peoples taste vary so much it's probably better if you do some experimenting till you find the ones you like.

Now, why would you assume that I'm a wine drinker?  ;D

As you sample various wines, remember that all alcohol—including wine—is an acquired taste.  You can learn to like or even love a wine that you might not like initially.  As your taste matures be willing to revisit wines you previously did not like or sample new ones—especially with different foods (meat, cheese, etc.).  You might be surprised what you learn to like and are even willing to pay a premium for!

btw, the hard and fast rules may have changed (you really can have any wine you want with any food) but certain foods DO go better with certain wines.  There is nothing like a premium stake with a glass of your favorite red wine.  :P

Anyway, one of my favorites...

I almost agree with this.

When I was in Maui a couple months ago we threw a party for some of our scuba diving buddies and had a blind taste test.  One bottle was $500.  Another was $300.  The rest were average priced $20-$60 per bottle.  My wine snob friend insisted we (and especially he) would able to taste the difference.  I told him he was fooling himself!

We marked each bottle and then wrapped each in a brown paper bag and on the spur of the moment created a grade sheet and marked it as we all tasted from each bottle and nibbled on snacks.  The result: we all liked bottle number 6.  Turns out it was a $60 bottle.  The $500 bottle came in third place and the $300 came in 5th place.

The lesson: trust your tongue—not the price!  Don't get me wrong: a good bottle of wine can be VERY expensive.  But your tongue should determine whether or not it's a good bottle--not the price nor the winery that it comes from.

Another question, I bought a white wine from the same brand as the red wine also. And I'm thinking of trying that one tonight also.
But then I will have two bottles which are not empty just sitting in my fridge at least until next weekend since Im only going to drink on weekends.

So, my question is, how long does wine last after you open it? the red one had a cork, but I put the cork back in it upside down and then it fit and sealed it again..

I can only buy what can be found here

in the first search box "sök".

here are the red wines :

An unfinished bottle of red in a fridge is such a lonely thing, try and finish it off before it gets put in there as it doesnt last very long. Red wine tastes better at room temperature and after it has been opend a while (to let it "breath" if you will). Leave it too long opened in the fridge and its suitable for beef stews etc. Thewre is a dutch hand vacumn pump/seal system available but as the dutch person who gave me a present of it who else but the dutch would have the need to save the little left in a near empty bottle

Rather than try and get the name of athe best wine you might have more fun just learning along the way . Price , atleast in most countries is no indication of how much you will like it. You may not like tsome of the "superior " wines- ie find your own taste rather than a book taste

Lidl & Aldi do good inexpensive wines and at €3 - €4 a bottle its difficult to complain.

Some time ago I saw a TV show with these bigshot "wine specialists", who were supposed to grade different glasses of wine (they didn't know which ones). The 4 dollar-a-liter supermarket stuff won. These guys were owned getbig style.
Anything over 15 dollars or so and you're only paying for the name and for being "classy".... :D 8)

Will finish the red wine bottle this weekend.

Is that common knowledge that I should have it standing opened for a while in room temprature before drinking it? just assumed it should be cold

Red wine should not be cold....and never put ice cubes in white wine. And some people (mostly women) put some water in their glass along with the white wine. That's worth a stoning according to the Wine Sharia. Just have a glass of water ready next to the wine..

Will finish the red wine bottle this weekend.

Is that common knowledge that I should have it standing opened for a while in room temprature before drinking it? just assumed it should be cold

few subjects seem to carry more bullshit and pretence than wine talk (its probably happens when we believe every thing the French say about themselves)
Most people find it tastier at room temp , a bit like some cheeses tast better at room temp.

try it some time and unless you have ended up with a realy shitty wine you will notice a difference.
However most people find white wine tastier when cooled

will try the red wine at room temprature tonight. But as I mention, should I keep it in the firdge and then take it out a while before, or always at room temp?

Red wine room temp or a bit lower
White wine fridge or a bit higher.

But the best temp is the one you like best of course. I like red wine a bit colder, except when it has a very strong round taste (starting this bullshit wine specialist vocabulary again btw)

red wine is my mortal enemy, seriously.  I love it.  but every time I skip it for 2 weeks, I add 5 pounds of muscle and look/feel worlds better.

doing my best to have a glass once a week, and that's it.

never did drugs, have given up liquor, never drank beer.  Wine is a completely different animal though.

Australia: any shiraz (red).  Hunter Valley semillon (white).

Do not buy Australian pinot unless you're a gambler.  Don't buy a malbec from anywhere unless you enjoy fermented gym socks.  Or at least buy a better one than the only one I ever bought.

The red wine at room temp thing is more of what your "supposed" to do... Personally, I don't like red wine at room temp, however, like one of the above posters stated, it really depends on which kind it is.  I put most of my red wines in the fridge with the whites.  I just think they taste better cold.  I've been to Italy and they also refrigerate some of their reds.  YEAA BUDDY!!

oblig.

A lot of people in this country pooh-pooh Australian table wines. This is a
pity, as many fine Australian wines appeal not only to the Australian palette,
but also to the cognoscenti of Great Britain.

"Black Stump Bordeaux" is rightly praised as a peppermint flavoured
Burgundy, whilst a good "Sydney Syrup" can rank with any of the world's
best sugary wines.

"Chateau Bleu", too, has won many prizes; not least for its taste, and
its lingering afterburn.

"Old Smokey, 1968" has been compared favourably to a Welsh claret,
whilst the Australian wino society thouroughly recommends a 1970 "Coq du
Rod Laver", which, believe me, has a kick on it like a mule: 8 bottles
of this, and you're really finished -- at the opening of the Sydney
Bridge Club, they were fishing them out of the main sewers every half an
hour.

Of the sparkling wines, the most famous is "Perth Pink". This is a
bottle with a message in, and the message is BEWARE!. This is not a
wine for drinking -- this is a wine for laying down and avoiding.

Another good fighting wine is "Melbourne Old-and-Yellow", which is
particularly heavy, and should be used only for hand-to-hand combat.

Quite the reverse is true of "Chateau Chunder", which is an Appelachian
controle, specially grown for those keen on regurgitation -- a fine wine
which really opens up the sluices at both ends.

Real emetic fans will also go for a "Hobart Muddy", and a prize winning
"Cuiver Reserve Chateau Bottled Nuit San Wagga Wagga", which has a
bouquet like an aborigine's armpit
.

But your tongue should determine whether or not it's a good bottle--not the price nor the winery that it comes from.

cool post bay... #1 tester on your grade sheet seems like a real asshole.  hope that wasn't you?

and I personally think most malbec wines are awesome.... los alamos is a good cheap one, only about $12 a bottle

Buy a couple bottles of Kestrel's Old Vine Merlot (yeah I know).  If you are seeing a gal that loves drinking wine, this bottle will get you in the sex.
