Title: massive neck training........
Post by: local hero on January 14, 2012, 09:37:07 AM
wasnt sure to post this on steroid board or on here,,,, 1st thing that i notice and other people notice when i come off gear is my neck size, its a huge give away for me, i must loose an inch over night.... ive always admired the tyson/wrestler type look in that way, looks impressive to me

so i was talking to an ex judo guy at the gym, he was in national squad a few year back and he was telling me i could put over an inch on my neck if id never trained it specifically before

anyone any experience of neck training, obviously theres the harness, any other movements i could try out, anything to avoid etc?

The harness is what I started with, and while it added some size to my neck, it made it quite strong.
I also used plate forehead crunches a lot.

Another excellent exercise to perform is the wrestler's bridge.
This video shows good, progressive variations:

Also - and, this is just my opinion - I believe that neck work is more beneficial in the higher-rep range.

Genetics and proper shrugs. My neck is 19" and I don't do any "direct" training.

It's tempting to make a comment about your mother having a 21" neck, but I like you, so I won't...

Even though, I kind of just did!

Wes: never seen a Nautilus 4 way neck machine, sounds logical. Seen a few regular neck machine in rehab centers before, but regular design. Most everything by Nautilus has superior function. Been told that most of the Nautilus equipment is sold to medical recovery, and some sport training centers, now days.

The wrestlers bridge is excellent, but perhaps not for everyone. Can hold a BB over head, for added resistance, when working the back of the neck. Wrestlers do a lot of manual resistance with neck exercises. Remembering that the neck can move from side to side , as well as up & down, they will apply pressure on the side of the head as the head is turned. Usually done with a training partner.

While a well made neck strap/harness is good and has built a lot of big necks, I prefer (personal view..do what you wish) manual resistance, using a long strap (judo/karate belts work very well also), applied by a training partner. The training partner can increase or reduce the effort of the exercise as the reps  are preformed, keeping a consent pressure (almost like a Nautilus machine) on the neck muscles. And can work all four movements/functions of the neck it's self. Just place the strap on the forehead, back of the head, etc (might need a towel, as a cushion, between the strap and head). Can also tell the training partner how much pressure (increase or lessen) is needed, as you are doing the neck exercise.

This method of using a long strap can also work well with triceps training, you laying on a matt or bench as the partner applies resistance throughout the rep scheme. Good Luck.

Side Bar: Can also work in negatives with a strap/belt, where manual resistance is applied. Works extremely well when doing the triceps  with a strap, also.

No clue, I was told I wasn't welcome if I want to lift heavy so I stay at my current gym. Which is honestly fine by me cause they let me train with the strongman implements I made.

That's nice!
I forgot you started making some of that stuff.
The other place probably wouldn't even permit you to bring chalk on the floor.

Like you mentioned, you're better off.

LOL,  well the "official" rules say no chalk, but in talking to us and letting us try it out they realize we aren't the sloppy chalk users that spread it all over and make a mess, so they have been OK with it. ;D

And we only have one stone left since the smaller one got broke. :(

I’d read a while back that quite a few customers had complained of some service issues.
They sell a weighted vest I’ve had my eye on for some time, but I’m a little reluctant to place an order.
I'm in no hurry, though; not even sure I really want it.

Thanks, man!!
The last place I ordered straps (or anything, really) was Schiek.
Got the ones with the neoprene/velcro cuff and long strap to replace my noose-style ATP's. I don't know that these'd hold up well to max deads, etc., but I've been training strictly bb style lately and they suit me fine.

The quality of their stuff that I've seen and heard of so far has been excellent; I wish they'd expand their product line a bit.
I'll check the jackyl site later today!

wrestlers bridge is a dangerous ex. I know a guy who is into BJJ who got it wrong one time and was out of action for a long time. Hang your head of the end of a bench and put a barbell plate in a towel, rest it on your forehead and raise your head upwards...simple. together with shrugs it's enough. Apart from that if no machine is available use partner resistance.

Actually, I think they sell something somewhat similar, now. I don't remember what they're called, but they look and fit similar: some kind of anti-slip grip material about the dimensions of an oven-holder attached to a wrist cuff.
Some fitness girl was pimping them on a video.

Yeah, it's OK but it just doesn't feel the same, nor does it last nearly as long as a block of chalk.

I tried one brand (think it may even have been called "Liquid Chalk") years ago.
It was okay, but it seemed to substantially wear off between sets, requiring frequent re-applications.
I seem to remember getting good results spraying my hands AND the bar.

And, as Chaos mentions, a regular block of chalk will last a lot longer than one bottle of the spray.

Yeah.
It's also my opinion that conventional chalk is the best.

I still remember my first gym: guys would chalk their hands, their shirts, the bar, etc. They'd even use chalk to write set numbers on plates. The floor, benches and equipment were all covered in white. It looked like a blizzard hit the gym!
But, they'd always clean it up afterwards.

Ha, ha...
I remember when I trained mid-mornings at my one gym.
The old folks would arrive a good 30-45 min before their SS class started, and would congregate on the benches and machines.
Some of them would actually try to use some of the cable stuff.

Once, my buddy was doing fairly heavy leg presses when one of the seniors walked over, stood next to the sled, and asked how much weight that was. He was in the middle of his set; his face was all red, cheeks blown up from breathing like a steam engine, sweat almost projecting from his pores...and this old lady is trying to make small talk! ;D
My friend answered her question after racking, and we just laughed about the whole thing later on.
We were always serious about our training, but none of that stuff ever bothered us.

Want to really upset any chrome palace chain gym, with their rules restricting  serious workouts, than use old fashion pine tar on your hands. Hard to get that stuff off BB's, DB's, machines, after using. They will remember you..forever.

We us a powder box (as do gymnastic), also have chalk blocks. Some guy's plaster the chalk on the front of their shirts & thighs. Idea being that the bar will slide by better when doing cleans or Hi-pulls. On the legs for Dl's. That's their theory, anyway. I prefer a regular chalk stick, which must be reapplied after each lift, for me anyway. Good Luck.

You know...instead of more tribal graphics, someone like Inzer or Animal ought to make a t-shirt with just a basic logo and printed with what looks like chalk on the front or across the upper back, etc.

i had this very gay twink dude who is always at my gym, and i never seen him lift a weight, actually try to speak to me in the middle of one of my heavy sets. he just walks around with his weird walk and his chin up all day, walking in circles and staring at people. but today he crossed a line.

anyways he actually tried to fucking talk to me while i was at the very bottom of a 405 lb squat.

this piece of shit actually got offended that i didn't respond to him at all while i was in my set, and when i was finally finished and i took my headphones off, he said something about "rude..." and then the tren immediately made me insane and i just started condemning him for his actions- i was beat red in the face and spitting all over the floor- and i didn't stop speaking until he just got scared and half walk-half skipped away from me.
