Title: Who Squats? I'm not doing that bullshit anymore...

It sucks and I just don't want to do it anymore so fuck it.  Whose with me?  ???

if you don't compete, then you can remove squats and bench press from your routine.  what's the point of a pec tear or jacked up knees?  my legs and chest respond well from machines.

why do people think squat, bench, and deadlift are so "dangerous"?  everyone talks about them like they will necessarily lead to injuries.

if anything, these are the lifts that people actually care about numbers for, so you're likely to try to lift more than you should... other than that, i don't see any reason people should assume these lifts will cripple them, any more than a machine lift.

I was doing squats last night in the gym - I like them. 20-rep sets on squats followed by the same on leg presses blows the thighs up like nothing else. Slept like a baby when I got home.

Squats, SLD and walking lunges are always included in my leg training.  Squats would be number one though..they are my fav exercise.

yes squats and lunges give that nice full "BOOTY" ass. Ok i train at home so i always do them but even when i was in a Gym i used them too. Leg press you can load weight on there but,,,Squats hit so much more. If you do not Squat for a while then do a hard Squat workout...sitting on the toilet hurts... ;)

I only do upper chest work since getting breast implants.  So it would be incline db presses and incline flyes.

That is possibility B  ;D

Either way, the squatter is not going to end up with bigger legs since it is an inferior hypertrophy exercise.

I stopped squatting for a year. I'm 42 - I'm not trying to get bigger and I was maintaining easily with one legged leg presses (fuck off - there's no 45 degree slide machine where I work out - just a horizontal sled). It was all going well - then my wife tells me I'm starting to develop old man flabby ass.

Back under the squat bar this week. I can hardly walk.

I could, of course, I could post my bare ass tbh, but I'm afraid the local schmoes could get overly excited. Let's just say that if your butt sticks out in jeans - it's a goog butt. (unless you are one fat fukk.. that doesn't count).

Truth is, squats, when done properly, are much safer than a majority of isolation-type movements, machines and, yes, even leg presses (to correct depth, doing the leg press can very much damage the low back).

There are many ways to tailor the squat to one's specific athletic/aesthetic requirement. I mean, the one poster who suggests squatting will make you appear as a gigantic SPF-type powerlifter is clueless. There is a WORLD of difference between performing Olympic squats with 315 and doing power-styled squats out of a monolift with 800 pounds.

Squatting is for truly athletic men and women.

I am convinced using a Smith machine for squats and presses, over time, becomes dangerous to the joints.

Of all the bad injuries to which I have been witness, almost all have occurred on a Smith.

Very unnatural way to work the body.

The real reason most don't squat is because it's so hard. That's the end of the story. Then you have the guys that squat and barely lower the weight because they want to say they squat big numbers.

If you have medical problems in your back, hips or knees I understand why you don't do them.  The other guys are just lazy. That's why the bench and curl is so popular.

Yes I agree.  In general I find that working my chest and arms is easy.  Working legs and back is hard.

deep squats are  knees ptrotectors not knee breakers .. half squat are bad . but for hypertrophy leg presses are good for functional strentgh squats remains great . front squats even more for athletes . . but stay away from smith . but yes squats can be a bit overrrated . good for athletes . depends also of your structure ..

if you don't compete, then you can remove squats and bench press from your routine.  what's the point of a pec tear or jacked up knees?  my legs and chest respond well from machines.

You can also remove them in case you do compete. Two of the most overrated exercises.

Pants are generally a MALE attribute and females did not wear them till' not so long ago. Most of fellas here would look ridiculously outdated in some kind of a more "subtle" enviroment, yet they'd imply the "normal people" axioma of course and "fags" and other stuff, while being very insecure about their own appearance most of the time and camouflaging that with /grimaces/ and stupid jokes. ;) I know.. most of you want to portray the "alpha male" rough fella image.. well for each his own.

We don't even have this term "capri pants" and plenty and plenty of guys wear these on the street when it's warm outside. Pants are NOT woman at all, so any kind of pans are for males first.
Only explanation I can find why it's strange from these from the US (you are not btw) is that these are older fellas who doesn't acknowledge anything aside these classic denim jeans lol..
But oh well.. I wear these "skinny" (most of 'em are skinny on me anyway..) jeans of a tight fit so I'm homo beyond belief anyway..

Let me clarify: in an enviroment where people aren't afraid to be stylish, experiment with the way they look, etc.. generally - open minded people. But these kind of pants are nothing out of the ordinary here anyway.. I was referring more to other ways of clothing, which older (but not necassirily) bitter guys frown upon (than they go home to fukk their ugly bitch, while these "homo looking" fellas walk with beautiful young ladies.. ;) ).

I agree - squats are great. Maybe THE greatest exercise for strength and mass...ok, maybe second behind deadlifts. But that's semantics.

However, most don't have the hip mobility or thoracic spine mobility and strength to squat properly. Most don't have the core strength necessary to brace the abdominal wall and keep a natural arch to the lumbar spine at full depth. What's more, most don't have abductor strength necessary to keep the knees from caving in, which can erode medial collateral ligaments in the knees. Furthermore, the least bit of imbalance between the feet can, over time, put a serious hurt on the hip joint (i.e. one foot points in or out slightly more than the other).

Squats are great, no doubt. But the risk for injury is high if you don't do them right. I suppose you could say that about any exercise. But given the loads most are prone to using in the squat, we can see that there's no margin for error; if your form isn't bang on, you can really get hurt a lot quicker with squats than you can with lunges, let's say. It's much harder to hurt yourself with dumbell curls, for example, because the load is too small to really kill your joints unless you get stupid (apples to oranges, I know, but you get it).

For hypertrophy and strength, it's hard to beat the squat when done right.

But since many, many guys can't squat right (though most won't admit it), there are safer moves. I like single leg bulgarian split squats, which take unilateral imbalances out of the equation and allow the body to move more freely even with imbalances. And, if you can hold a couple of 120lb dumbells in your hands and do 1-leg bulgarian split squats, I'd say you've probably got solid legs to go with it.

Again...no slam against the squat. I used to love it, and still do. But it's so easy to hurt yourself unless you're really in tune with your body and the mechanics of the lift (like most powerlifters and oly-lifters are), or you have a good coach who's taught you right from wrong (i.e. not your buddy at Good Life Fitness or the trainer at Planet Fitness).

They hurt by back, which has two bad discs. And before someone say you're not doing it right if your getting hurt, bullshit, you start loading hundreds of pounds on your back, shit goes wrong.

The same.  It took me awhile to suck it up because I truly love squats more than any other exercise, but I stopped heavy back squats about 8 months ago and my back pain pretty dissipated within two weeks (spondylolisthesis diagnosed years ago at L5).  Still hit front squats pretty heavy, but that's only about 60% of the back squat poundage.

If you have the chance to do so. We have shitty one with a very small platform, but the worst part is that it has a weight stack, so you can't start in a natural position (thanks Technogym  ::) )

Squats is a fun exercise. Compared to leg presses and hack squats which is torture, it is quite simple. I can rely on 10 heavy sets of squats only and rock better quads than any of you leg machine type guys. It really is the king exercise for legs, and you benefit greatly from it.

The only problem with exercises like squats, deads, bent over rows and bench presses is that while they are really good for adding mass, they are also "good" for adding size to the midsection... That is the only thing I hate about them, but you cant win em all.

do lighter weight and always do box squats so you can rest at the bottom or use a bench, i think it helps you focus on the glutes and hams more rather than beating up your knee

Compressing your spinal column with heavy weight as with squats and deadlifts is always going to cause damage you wouldn't have when you avoided both. Luckily most of you homos can only squat 1 plate a side so it might work out OK.

Squats are the best exercise for mass if you do them correctly most try too much weight and end up bending over involving the low back, best to put your heels on about a 1" plate or board keeps you more upright.

i do an olympic protocol, so basically i do a schedule that goes snatch/c&j/snatch variation/c&j variation/presses and assistance. the first four days have some kinda squat assistance, or deadlift sometimes, plus some quick pressing and rowing or chins on the oly days. fun stuff.

No and no.
Just as with regular squats, you can arch your back too much, move your hips too much backwards, move your knees in the wrong direction and so on... It's false safety.
You get much more feedback from your body when you perform regular squats. This feedback helps you to improve your technique (i.e. when you listen to those signals!).

I started doing the smith mach. after my shoulder surgery, I cannot get my arm to grip the bar close enough to not pinch my hands when I re rack on regular squats. And I don't like front squats. Leg press for that.

Lower the weight until you get it right, even if it means doing the empty bar. I always warm up with an empty bar 20 -25 reps. Do at least three warmup sets.  Always go low, after a while your knees will feel much better than putting the brakes on to stop half way.  This causes much more stress then sinking right down. Most people can't squat because they go too heavy and are afraid of looking like a pussy, check out Musclecenters vid, pretty good form.

i've had 2 surgeries on my left knee due to kneecap dislocation from playing b-ball, so i'd rather not risk another injury there, but the funny thing is... a dude i knew who played football for The Ohio State University (and he was a standout player back in the day, in fact) had 5 surgeries on 1 knee and 2 on the other and he loaded up the bar to 500 pounds and knocked out 10 good deep full reps with it, and upon finishing this he laughed in my face and said "only 2 surgeries, eh?" 8) 8) 8)

High-rep squats are the best exercise imho.

I don't see the point of heavy squats unless you're a power-lifting athlete.

Guy looks great....you have to hand it to him.
Powerlifting, usually for the guy with poor bbing genetics...not always, but usually.

High reps with natural form, until about 2 months ago.  :-\

I don't give a shit about 'proper' form.  I don't move enough weight to worry about it.

why do people think squat, bench, and deadlift are so "dangerous"?  everyone talks about them like they will necessarily lead to injuries.

if anything, these are the lifts that people actually care about numbers for, so you're likely to try to lift more than you should... other than that, i don't see any reason people should assume these lifts will cripple them, any more than a machine lift.

it's just something weak guys say so they can pretend that they're strong and use machines.  I see it all the time.  "I don't squat because its too hard on my knees."  Meanwhile, they rep out half reps with 8 plates a side on the hack squat machine.  I always want to stroll over and ask them, "And that's not fucking hard on your knees??!!!"

do lighter weight and always do box squats so you can rest at the bottom or use a bench, i think it helps you focus on the glutes and hams more rather than beating up your knee

I do box squats using a low stool. It helps me insure I am going low enough. I don't rest at the bottom of the exercise though. For the time being, I am not able to do any weighted leg movements because I just had knee surgery. I am not even supposed to walk putting weight on my right leg for about a month. What I am doing is high reps of weight free leg extensions and leg lifts; this is with doctor's orders.

squats are great - but avoid going to failure as your form suffers and that can lead to injuries. Instead go for extra sets at sub-failure (like a powerlifter does).

if you don't compete, then you can remove squats and bench press from your routine.  what's the point of a pec tear or jacked up knees?  my legs and chest respond well from machines.
Aren't you on the list of people that don't even lift?

Some facts:
 - 99% have no idea how to squat. 2.5 months in USA and I saw literally ONE guy who squatted correct way. Ex powerliter, who woulod have thought, lol.
 - ATG is safer than half squat.
 - Squats make every weakness or imbalance in your body surface. If you've got tight glutes - you're gonna have buttwink. 99.9% of squatters suffered from buttwink, including me. It's recurring illness, you have to constantly fight it. 90% of people don't even know they have buttwink. They feel pain in their back and that's it. They then figure squats damaged their back. In fact, back involvement is minimal if someone is flexible and have perfect squatting form.
 - Squats STRENTHEN your knees. They build muscles in balanced way and it PROTECTS joints.
 - If you're afraid of injuries just use moderate weights. 220lbs for 12 reps done ass to grass, pause at the bottom (remember to keep your quads flexed when you pause!), 4 sets will destroy about everyone's legs without destroying their knees.
 - Machines hurt knees more than squats. The reason machines are deemed "safer" is because people are more likely to let their ego go and use lower weight and full ROM.
 - Low bar is less safe than high bar.
 - High bar won't develop big ass in 60% of cases. I have tiny ass. Some Olympic weightlifters I know have tiny ass. It's genetic, like everything.
 - Smith machine squats are knee KILLER.
 - Belt should be avoided at all costs. We are only human but belt is only for ego. Drop 20-30kg and leave belt at home.

Just for something different, I did two sets of super-slow barbell squats  (10 seconds positive, 10 seconds negative) with 225lbs on Tuesday, and my quads are still on fire two days later.  Just two friggin' sets.   I can barely get myself off the toilet after taking a shit, my legs are so damn sore.

I started doing the smith mach. after my shoulder surgery, I cannot get my arm to grip the bar close enough to not pinch my hands when I re rack on regular squats. And I don't like front squats. Leg press for that.

I have the same stiffness in my shoulders, always had. If your gym has plates with holes, you can grab them instead of the bar.
As a no-brainer, try some flexibility exercises for your delts before you squat, bands are great for this.

Thanks I'll try it.....our plates have holes....I stretch before but ROM just isn't there yet.

Two basic types of squats. Low bar and wide stance to parallel that is the power lifting method. It should be called a hip lock instead of a squat. The power lifting squat of today with the squat suits are really shallow compared to past power lifting standards. Then there is the high bar medium stance, true full squat; fairly upright Olympic squat. Most bodybuilders use a hybrid of the two. Go to just about any gym and shallow squats rule. Like someone said before squats strengthen healthy knees.

One of the best exercises going is the dumbbell squat. You hold two dumbbells at your side with wrist straps for grip. So many guys will say I use 400lbs when I squat how can I use dumbbells? The exercise is really hard and it doesn't take that much weight if done correctly. The biggest mistake is deadlifting the weight by using a shallow knee bend and bending over. It is not a deadlift. Hold the bells at your side and squat upright until your legs are fully bent. For many the dumbbells will almost touch the floor. Most 400lbs squatters would have a tough time using 120lbs dumbbells doing it in the fashion described for sets of 12. Another advantage is that there is much less spine compression. Maybe it won't matter for young bucks but if you train for decades you have to think about wear and tear on your body.

The DB squat is an interesting one, the load distribution is way different. The only problem with this variant is that I experience the same problem as with DB shrugs; the DBs push against the outer quads. Because of this, I would love to try a hex bar, but my gym hasn't one  :-\

I took a couple of years off squatting, but got back into it recently.. last week I hito 495 x 3 high bar 'ATM' no belt (as low as I can physically go) but to be honest my legs have actually shrunk a bit.

the leg press is better for size, for me at least, because I cant take a high volume of 8-12 rep sets of squats like I can with the leg press.

There's a lad in my gym, maybe 50 years of age, wears work boots, some jeans and a wifebeater into the gym every session, has a bunch of tacky tattoos and a constant look of anger on his face, and I've never seen him squat. So, I squat.

Also, if you're more into the actual act of lifting than the results, then it's a really rewarding lift.

That's because squatting in jeans can result in a crushed testicle or a split scrotum.  This has been discussed at length in numerous threads ad nauseum.  Please use the search function in the future.

Until my thirties i had a hard time doing squats, front squats was the only way i could do it confortably. I could only use 2 plates each side.
Then i started gradually triyng regular squats and now i prefer them over hack machine or even leg presses. I use 3 plates each side max, going all the way to the ground.
