today marks the beginning of the second month of being on my own. finding out all kinds of things about budgeting and what not. wondering what kinds of tips you guys have. and interested in sharing stories about the whole "on my own for the first time" deal.
my diet is nothing but white rice, chicken breast, and fish oil.
this is what 40 dollars gets me at costco. 25lbs of rice. 400 caps of fish oil. and 10lbs of chicken.
the rice and fish oil will last a month. but the chicken lasts only 4 days.
-
all the best foods are found around the walls of the supermarkets
anything found in the isles is shit
-
Costco, Shoppers, Sales and Coupons, that's all you need.

Not true whatsoever. How do you suppose you`d make anything if you followed that nonsensical approach?

Not sure how your supermarket layout is Adonis but most supermarkets work that way, cookies, cerials, chips , sodas, can all be found in the isles

Yeah I have some advice. Learn how to cook.
So many ways to chicken, so many ways to cook fish, so many ways to cook beef and pork.
And then he can always eat oatmeal and boiled eggwhites for breakfast.
-
Yes learn how to cook. Also add in veges and fruits, they provide good essential vitamins and nutrients.

I think the best approach is gather your recipes and then make a list of what you need, then purchase.
Question: do people on the West Coast have trouble getting pork?

How come I never hear of anyone making anything with Pork, especially from the West Coast. ???

Purchasing coffee in bulk saves money too. Getting anything in bulk saves really. I always read the supermarket specials that we get here and then go to either coles or woolies to get the best savings. So basically shop around to save money.

any good tuna recipes fellas? and don't say eat it out the can, i tried it and almost choked on it several times i also tried blending it with water and pounding it :-X :-X

Learn how to bone and process your own meat. Many times, it comes out a lot cheaper if you buy the whole chicken, fish, etc..... and take five minutes to break it down. Also learn to like other parts of the animal, dark meat is always dirt cheap, and the less leaner cuts of meat. And nutrition wise, they're not horrible for you.
Also, if you can fit it in your kitchen, buy a small freezer, and buy meat on sale in bulk.
And get a nice selection of sauces. A good sauce, marinade, etc... can make even a bland meal bearable.

.
It takes 2-4 minutes to debone a chicken, maybe a minute more for a good sized fish. It's not a big deal.

You can endure it right from the can with some old bay seasoning on it, a little bit of Dukes mayo helps a lot.

Yeah I have some advice. Learn how to cook.
LOL, dude, i would absolutely demolish you in an iron chef cook off dude. without a recipe in front of you detailing exactly what to cook and exactly how to cook it/spice it you have no idea how to cook anything! me on the other hand, i can cook absolutely anything and do it from scratcj with no recipe whatsoever and after one or two tries i will have perfected it to a degree that i could sell the recipe to a 5 star restaurant for a few hunded thousand dollars. :P (ok thats exaggerated a little bit ;D )
Yes learn how to cook. Also add in veges and fruits, they provide good essential vitamins and nutrients.
i know how to cook amazingly well. fruits and veggies.. no room for them in the budget, or the fridge (mini fridge and mini freezer) !!!! lol
Are you sure you need to eat that much chicken? That's like 340 g of protein a day.
2.5lb chicken pe day is 220 grams protein.. i eat one chicken breats every 4-5 hours..
Purchasing coffee in bulk saves money too. Getting anything in bulk saves really. I always read the supermarket specials that we get here and then go to either coles or woolies to get the best savings. So basically shop around to save money.

I buy the bulk packs of chicken breast w rib meat at wongmart for $1.99lb, the packs are usually around 5 lbs each. Its a lot better than that stuff in the bag.

i mix it with mayo and pickle relish. not sure why, my mom always made it this way tho for tuna sandwiches. tastes pretty good imo. you can eat it without any accompaniment, or on bread / crackers, etc.
-
But you need some fruit and veges in your diet. You need to think long term here. Veges and fruits are good for you and fight free radicals.

That sounds delish..Im gonna try that
-
egg whites + orange or pineapple juice (equal parts for best taste) is a good, though expensive, way to get protein with any meal. tastes almost just like regular juice. god bless gh15 for that one... haven't choked down a nasty glass of whey in months.
-
That sounds delish..Im gonna try that
the key is to get the right proportion of ingredients. the tuna shouldn't be drowning, but also the whole thing should have a whitish appearance; if it's still fish colored, there's too little mayo/pickles.
-
here's a cheap and decent "bodybuilding" style meal I just discovered:
1 lb stir fry type noodles (the malleable "fresh" kind, probably found in refrigerated section)
1/2 - 1 package frozen stir fry vegetables
2 cups chicken broth (low sodium if you have BP concerns)
1 rotisserie chicken, shredded
a bit of soy sauce -- or whatever sauce you want
1. soak the noodles in water while you stir fry the vegetables and chicken, about five minutes.
2. drain and add noodles to stir fry. add sauces and chicken broth.
3. continue frying for a few minutes until it looks good / broth is absorbed.
this should be enough for a couple meals. not the tastiest thing, but cheap and decent bbing food.
-
For a quick and healthy meal I cook a piece of salmon in a pan...olive oil brushed on both sides and grind some pepper and sea salt. I steam some rice to eat with it. It's very quick and yummy.

Ill make some tommorow

I just give my wife a list and send her to the market.
-
My favorite breakfast:
2 whole wheat (doesn't matter really) english muffins
2 eggs
2 slices of pepperjack
barbecue sauce
8oz egg whites + 8oz orange juice
1. heat / grease your pan. once it's hot, put the eggs down and pop the muffins in the toaster. the eggs / muffins should be done around the same time if you have a slow toaster like me :D
2. flip the eggs once the raise part of the white hardens, and top with cheese.
3. assemble eggs/cheese + muffins, top with barbecue sauce.
it's good!

how long does it take to steam rice? do you use a typical vegetable steamer, or what?
-

No I use a rice cooker. It's awesome. So I basically use the absorption method. One cup of rice to one cup of water and voila when it's ready it just turns itself off.

Based on your poor food choice and total lack of culinary skill, I`d say you are wrong. Just because you are fat does not mean you know how to cook.

all the best foods are found around the walls of the supermarkets

good call. shop round the store, then hit the aisles for everything else.
-
any good tuna recipes fellas? and don't say eat it out the can, i tried it and almost choked on it several times i also tried blending it with water and pounding it :-X :-X
1 can solid white albacore(blue can)
1spoon of each or less to taste
1 spoon low fat mayo
1 spoon Dijon mustard
1 spoon sugar free sweet relish
Mix all in a bowl with a pinch salt and pepper and serve on whole wheat toast or just out of bowl(low carb)
Or I eat it with rice and soy sauce/wasabi
-
I make my own pasta sauce. It's affordable and tastes great. Pasta you can purchase here on sale for a dollar per bag. I just slice up around 6 cloves of purple garlic, chop half an onion up. Put in the pan and cook in olive oil (make sure not to have heat up as to burn the garlic) until the garlic and onion is soft. Then I throw in a tin of diced tomatoes, salt, pepper and then add the cooked pasta and stir through. Serve with some grated parmessen cheese. If you want protein then add a tin of tuna to your bowl of pasta.
-
and a nice chianti.
-
and a nice chianti.
Yes, yum.
-
Another quick meal I make is red lentil and tomatoe soup. Chop up around 8 gloves of purple garlic and a small onion, cook in olive oil and make sure not to have the heat up. Then when its soft, you add one large tin of diced tomatoes. Heat through and then add 3 litres of stock..either chicken or vegetable. I make my own stocks, this saves money too and is very healthy. For vege stock, I just save the water that I cook my veges in and freeze it for later use.
So then I add two cups of red lentils, add ground pepper and sea salt. Stir through and keep heat so that it's just simmering. Keep an eye on it so that it doesn't stick to bottom of pot. When lentils are soft and a little see through its ready. You will know when its ready though.
I serve with a crusty bread stick. Cut in half, brush all over with olive oil and put under the grill. If you are craving cheese, then I slice up greek feta cheese and place on top of the bread stick and then drizzle more olive oil over the top and eat with soup.
-
The cheapest protein to be found are the bags of chicken leg quarters...bake them all up at one time and freeze them individually in containers/plastic bags. Get a stand mixer with dough hooks...learn how to make bread/pizza/pasta/any trash pastry items you want from scratch. Get a cook book.
-

Good idea depending on where you live. We get around half a cow per year processed from the herd and I process all the venison (deer meat) that I kill and possibly a wild hog. Pack it in the deer freezer and eat on it all year.
-
How would I make Jefferson Davis Pie by just going around the edges? ???
Have any recipes named after Andrew Jackson? ???
-
get a grill
get a rice cooker with steamer (for vegies)
get a pot for boiling eggs or oatmeal
you are good to go to be a hardcore bodybuilder
;D

Beans and rice cheap as hell, makes a complex protein throw on some onions and ketchup good cheap food.

Yea if you want to do it that way and pick rocks out and shit. I used to help my grandmother do that. I think Falcon does it that way he buys them in the bag he is vegetarian so beans are are a big protein source. I'm lazy. I just buy them in a can heat them up and make some rice throw on Ketchup and onions good shit and a high protein source.

Soaking them sucks, but follow the directions. You can get the kind in a jar, or can as an alternative. Cook those mother fuckers in salt pork (brown it in bottom of pan with onions, let the lard flow), add beans, some carrots and other shit. Maybe some Tabasco
Very fucking good

I always soak my beans. I just soak them over night while I am sleeping.

looking for a job, cant get welfare or foodstamps cuz im in school.. might apply for food stamps once i get a job though (have to work at least 20 hours per week to qualify for foodstamps if your a student [odd thing though, if your not in school there is no work requirement.. so if i really wanted food stamps but didnt want to work i would need to drop out of school to get them]).. however if i did get food stamps id be able to get alot better food than i can now.. foodstamps = 200 bucks per month.. thats about 50 bucks more per month than i have to spend now.. :)

-
tbombz I feel that if you just buy chicken and rice you will get tired of it and not having anything else on hand you may be likely tempted to eat out more and even eat fast food that can be very expensive.
-
i dont have money to order dominos or go eat out
chicken breast are the cheapest source of protein i can find and white rice the same. for fat intake 10 capsules of fish oil per day. 8 dollars for 400 caps so 40 days of fat intake for 8 dollars. 25lbs of rice will last me like 20-30 days depending. chicken breast i eat one every 4-5 hours. id like to eat two every 5-6 hours but cant afford that. i have a giant salt shaker that i use on the chicken and rice.
i dont get bored of chicken and rice. wish i had more actually ;D

how many grams of fat is in 10 capsules? like 20-40? how many calories do you eat per day? seems like a very unusual macronutrient distribution to me...

kahn posted it already... you should PM lobstah, she seemed interested ;D
but dude, you claim to eat about 2500 calories?
well, let's just take a look at this:
500 grams of carbs from (white) rice = roughly 9 cups = about 2250 cals
(http://www4a.wolframalpha.com/Calculate/MSP/MSP9641a363a7eeh3fddd6000013f6h55d48g1g61d?MSPStoreType=image/gif&s=48&w=290&h=465)
+ lets say 4 chicken breasts, at about 8oz each = 1400 calories
(http://www4a.wolframalpha.com/Calculate/MSP/MSP1001a363adi45f09f9200004adbiie4aaa502ed?MSPStoreType=image/gif&s=8&w=302&h=509)
+ 10 capsules = 12 grams of fat = roughly 110 calories
so, as we can see from the labels, you're eating roughly:
chicken: 50 grams fat, 230g protein, 15g carbs. total: 2250 cals
rice: 10g fat, 45g protein, 500g carbs total: 1400 cals
fish pills: 12 g fat total: 110 cals
for a grand total of:
62 g fat, 275 protein, and 515 carbs = 3760 cals
which means about 14% fat, 30% protein, and 60% carbs
yes i know the numbers are a little off cause i used a lot of rounding, but
1. lol @ 2500 calories
2. 14% fat is way below any recommended value i've ever seen. almost everyone suggests between 20-30%. but, as we all know, the fitness world is tremendously overabundant in bullshit, so i wouldn't worry about it too much.
3. just another case of a "bodybuilder" giving out completely random numbers that "sound right." no wonder everyone is so fucking confused when they look online for advice.

Lobstah likes big bubble butts. PM her Tbombz ;D You might want to get a razor though for the bum fluff.
-
kahn posted it already... you should PM lobstah, she seemed interested ;D
but dude, you claim to eat about 2500 calories?
well, let's just take a look at this:
500 grams of carbs from (white) rice = roughly 9 cups = about 2250 cals
(http://www4a.wolframalpha.com/Calculate/MSP/MSP9641a363a7eeh3fddd6000013f6h55d48g1g61d?MSPStoreType=image/gif&s=48&w=290&h=465)
+ lets say 4 chicken breasts, at about 8oz each = 1400 calories
(http://www4a.wolframalpha.com/Calculate/MSP/MSP1001a363adi45f09f9200004adbiie4aaa502ed?MSPStoreType=image/gif&s=8&w=302&h=509)
+ 10 capsules = 12 grams of fat = roughly 110 calories
so, as we can see from the labels, you're eating roughly:
chicken: 50 grams fat, 230g protein, 15g carbs. total: 2250 cals
rice: 10g fat, 45g protein, 500g carbs total: 1400 cals
fish pills: 12 g fat total: 110 cals
for a grand total of:
62 g fat, 275 protein, and 515 carbs = 3760 cals
which means about 14% fat, 30% protein, and 60% carbs

I eat 2500 calories on workout days, 2000 on non-workout. How do I know? I count them accurately. VERY few people do.

Taylor,
Aside from the chicken & rice, you can always buy a generous supply of eggs and make:
Scrambled eggs
Fried eggs
Hard Boiled Eggs

The biggest thing I have learned without reading this thread:
#1 get together with buddies and buy in bulk directly. This means going to a chicken supplier, buying 100kg at a time and buy big. You will have to put out a crap pile of cash but you will save tens of thousands in the long run.
I am currently paying about 6 bucks a kilo for chicken that sells for 16-17 in the store. Bonless skinless chicken breast.
#2 learn to cut your meat yourself, this means buying whole sides of cow, selling what you dont want to family to cover the cost of your cow, and keeping what you want.
#3 check out the asian markets, they quite often sell rice in 50kg bags! and thats a shit pile of rice bro! but its the same price as your 2kg bag!! wow...lookout costco.
#3 watch for sales on stuff, superstore here sometimes has 2 breasts of chicken on for 8 bucks. They are only 5-6 ounce ones, but for that price its almost as good as a bulk buy.
Some times you wont need it, but buy it anyway, good sales are hard to come by.
I truly like to live by #1 though, I even buy my protein that way 25 tubs at a time. 50 bucks each for a product that retails at 80, good deal IMO. (5lb tubs)

where the hell do you live, switzerland?
8 bucks for 10-12 oz chicken is a good deal ???
50 bucks for a 5lb tub? ever hear of bodybuilding.com? trueprotein.com?
-
Go to asian markets. You can buy fish real cheap, cheaper than chicken. You love up North so it should be easy to find cheap fish, especially salmon which gives you all the fish oils needed.
Also buy potatoes, especially soon near Thanksgiving they are dirt cheap. Also go to stores the day after thanksgiving, you can buy Turkey at 1/2 the cheap price already.
-
I would mix your foods up Tbombz as it's no fun eating the same boring foods every single fucking day. You will feel as though you are on a prep diet after a couple of months.
Das booty is correct. I did the chicken breast and rice thing for a couple months straight. One day it took me about 10 minutes to down one bite. I just didn't have it in me to eat anymore chicken breast. My body just rejected it. I never ate chicken for over a year after that.
From Costco buy some Eye of round roast, cut into steaks and freeze. Beef keeps you looking pumped

Who the fuck buys a whole cow ???

IMO You should add some veggies to your diet, even if you have to go can.
Maybe go brown rice instead of white if you can too.
You say you know how to cook, so buy some spices and do that chicken 100 different ways.
-
how do you prepare beans? i never understood this. it takes forever to soak / cook them, from what i remember?
The soaking is to remove the fart gases. ;D

The same thing has happened to me with boiled egg whites. They won't go down. I just bring them back up.

Aldi has great prices on the basics (see the Aldi Rocks thread on nut board) as does Trader Joe's on a lot of stuff. For instance, the regular price of boneless, skinless chicken breasts at Aldi is 1.99/lb. Fage Greek yogurt = 3.29/17.5 oz. Eggs are super cheap. Also, basic household items like garbage bags, dish soap, etc. are cheap and just as good as what you'd get elsewhere.
-
;D
Why did you post a picture of your hairy ass? :-X

Does growing and killing your own count?

Who the fuck buys a whole cow ???
I know several people that do. You just need one of those freezers with the lid that opens.
Not that strange as far as I know.

;D
i was hoping it was swede not bombz,,,,

You live in produce country. Check out the farmer's markets!
If you're going to invest in spices, get decent stuff, not the McCormick crap at the grocery store. Find a good spice house or ethnic food store.

Hi Dennis Wolf.

I know several people that do. You just need one of those freezers with the lid that opens.

I know quite a few people who do that. The practice doesn't seem as common today, and most people who take advantage of it tend to live in rural areas and know farmers, etc.
Yes, it's a good deal for the volume, but buying a whole cow means you get both the good AND bad cuts of meat; it's not as if you're buying 200 lbs of filet mignon.
