Richard Sherman To Skip Bayless: 'I'm Better At Life Than You' (VIDEO)

[ Invalid YouTube link ]

Just because Richard Sherman didn't want to be baited into criticizing Darrelle Revis during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take" on Thursday didn't mean that he didn't talk any trash. Rather than directing his verbal barbs at his NFL peers, the Seattle Seahawks' combative cornerback took on Skip Bayless.

Speaking in a measured tone to start, Sherman told Bayless to address him as "All-Pro Stanford graduate" and then went on to say that the ESPN analyst has "never accomplished anything." Always willing to embrace conflict, Bayless went right back at Sherman, claiming he has accomplished more in his field than Sherman has on the gridiron.

"I'm the top of my field. I'm All-Pro. I'm one of the best 22 players in the NFL," Sherman fired back. "You're going to brush it off, but I don't think you're the best 22 anything. In sports. In media. In anything. I think you think more of yourself than you actually can prove. I'll put it like this. In my 24 years of life, I'm better at life than you."

Not stopping after the epic "better at life" claim, Sherman went on to call Bayless "ignorant, pompous, egotistical." Thrust into the unlikely role of peacemaker as Sherman and Bayless continued to bicker, Stephen A. Smith finally asked, "Can ya'll stop?"

I'm quite certain that Stanfard is not like a Florida State or Miami when it comes to the requirements for graduation... Even if you're a football player.

I would agree that in the long run, he's most likely going to be just fine.

Skip kept cool.   I would have responded with "Richard, where was this intelligence when you claim you accidentally drank addreall and were suspended for 4 games for violating NFL drug policy"?

Or, "Do you think you'll be able to continue playing at an elite level without the use of prescription drugs you used without a prescription?"

Or, "Do you think I'd be a better journalist if I used Adderall, and do you have any I can borrow?"

Professional sport today is just an effort to stem the crime and drug riddled african population who functions comparably poorly in society. It creates role models for youth. Hence all the exposure in media to keep it going and keep the sponsors there.

He is an entertainer, nothing fucking more.  He plays a game for a living so white people can bet on him.  he is no higher than a pittbull that people bet on or Neggers that used to fight in the pits while the masters ate huge meals.  Do these black guys think they're special playing a sport?  They are hand picked to entertain us, the superior race.

Yes even from Standford.  It's all an illusion.  They make hundreds of millions being part of the PAC 12 and the TV contracts.  They make millions from football.  They ease the afletes through. Sure he'll make a lot of money but he'll lose all of it , no metter his edumacation.
He needs to realize that Pro sports are the same version as Slave flighting, except they get paid.  But think about it.  32 white owners sit back and bid on who gets the strongest black man.  The black man has no say where he is sold to.  If he makes a fuss the white man trades the black man for a more obediant black man.
They are then trained to hurt and maime each other for sport while they entertain millions of people that bet on them.  Sports athletes are no better than dogs.

Richard Sherman taking his message to his roots
Posted Mar 5, 2013

 Clare Farnsworth
aaRichard Sherman always has a lot to say about a variety of topics. But the Seahawks’ All-Pro cornerback is taking his loquacious act to his old high school in Compton during a trio of stops on Wednesday.

Richard Sherman has a lot to say. But that’s OK. The Seahawks’ ebullient All-Pro cornerback likes to talk, and the Stanford-educated Sherman is good at it.

And that’s good, too, because Wednesday Sherman is taking his message to his roots as part of the “Excellence in Education” Tour in partnership with “Students With a Goal” (SWAG). In a trio of 90-minute appearances where he grew up, Sherman will speak at two high schools – Dominguez in Compton, his alma mater; and Verbum Dei in Los Angeles – as well as at the Brotherhood Crusade in L.A.

Sherman was one of those students with a goal not that long ago. Recruited out of Dominguez High by USC when Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was coaching the Trojans, Sherman opted for Stanford because, as he has put it on several occasions, “I wanted to make a statement to my city. I’m from Compton, and it’s hard for people to understand that you can be an athlete and have high academic standards and achieve high academic things. So I really wanted to make that known to people that you can go to Stanford from Compton.”

Sherman not only went to Stanford, he graduated with a degree in – what else – communications.

He’s been communicating ever since. Face-to-face. On TV. Via Twitter. Before games. During games. After games. In-season. Offseason.
Asked about the exposure for Sherman, who led the league in passes defenses (24) and tied for second in interceptions (eight) last season, Carroll smiled and offered, “It’s obvious that Richard’s got a lot of free time on his hands. I haven’t read one word that he’s said. I just see the pictures with his mouth open and I know what’s going on.”

Everyone gathered around Carroll at the Combine laughed. The Seahawks’ coach then added, “Richard knows what he’s doing. He’s having fun playing with this whole thing. He had a tremendous season. So he’s got something to stand on right now.”

Wednesday, Sherman’s stand will take him to Dominguez High in the morning, Verbum Dei High at midday and the Brotherhood Crusade in late afternoon.

“As a student-athlete, I always believed academic excellence was just as important as excellence on the football field,” Sherman said in the release announcing his whirlwind tour. “And even as a kid from Compton, I never doubted that I could turn obstacles into opportunity.”

Obstacles like shuffling between wide receiver and cornerback at Stanford, which hindered his draft status; and entering the NFL as a fifth-round draft choice by the Seahawks in 2011; and being the third option at left cornerback as a rookie before injuries to Marcus Trufant and Walter Thurmond thrust Sherman into the starting lineup.

“That’s why I’m excited about SWAG and the ‘Blueprint for Success Program,’ ” Sherman said. “Because as a “Student With a Goal,” I was able to go from Compton to Stanford to the NFL – that’s SWAG. Be a “Student With a Goal” and let your education open doors to an amazing future.”

That’s the message Sherman will deliver to the next generation. And an educated guess is that it will be punctuated by his infectious personality and driven by his gregarious gift for gab

I'd like to see that moron say that again in 15-20 years.  My guess?  He'll be another retard with spinners on more cars than he can drive, then lose it all when he ages out of the NFL.

"Oh, Isse be bettuh at life dan you!"  Your life is just beginning, young Sherman.  And you're one game/injury away from being a fucking cripple.

Enjoy that unwarranted arrogance while it lasts, boy.

That's the mentality.  Make me billions why I pay you millions to do what I tell you to and eventually spend the rest of your life with fucked up knees and never being able to remember where you left your keys.

and when you are no longer an employee of the NFL you can pay for you medi care on your own. i seen lots of players get pissed about this. you break your back or blow out your knee and its a problem for life.

This is a legitimate complaint.  People may say a person assumes the risk when they play but it seems a bit heartless to abandon an injured player.  The NFl can afford it.  Best thing to do is plan ahead while in college.  Football wont always be there.  You arent going to get to far with a communications degree.

I recently earned my MA at Chapel Hill, thanks for asking.  My dentist went to school at UNC-CH throughout his college career.  As he told me, it was the funniest thing, but some basketball and football players of his acquaintance would take the same courses he did as an undergrad and, even though they only attended class perhaps 20-30% of the time, they all wound up with, gasp, As and Bs!

Shermann made 465k in year one, and 510k in year two.  He's certainly doing better than most people his age.

Skip bayliss' salary is actually about the same.  And if Skip falls in the bath house and turns his knee, he has health insurance from ESPN and still does his show.  He'll probably still be doing the same ESPN gig (at least for radio) in 5 or 10 years.  The chances of shermann playing 8 more years to reach a 10th season aren't high, given average NFL CB career lengths.  The NFL gives Shermann a big middle finger if he tears a knee stepping out of his limo tomorrow.

Skip's net worth is 4 million and he has a sustianable salary of half a mil.  That's a good living.  Shermann may get to 4 million cash in the bank, but that's a year or three away.

Watching the interview, we forget SKip is a wealthier man.

thing about it is, is Duke basketball players tend to be quite smart. Case in point Grant Hill, Wojo, and even Jason Williams (yes he was stupid for having that sport bike)...
Duke and Chapel Hill and Maryland have different atmospheres---UNC and Marylandis pure balla (in terms of basketball programs. Duke, Coach K recruits guys who might not be the best, but play well as a team and are academically inclined.

you chimps need to stop while you are ahead.

Sherman graduated in 2010 from Stanford with a degree in Communications and returned for his final year of eligibility in order to begin a Masters degree.[/b

this dude wasn't taking the normal football player classes at Stanford, and he returned his fifth year to work on his masters.

Dude, it's communications.  Have you ever taken a university level comms course?  It's basically what you take as an elective instead of folklore, religious studies, anthro. or any other bird course.  I think the Comms degree was created for jocks.  I would say all you have to do is show up to class on a regular basis, but you don't really have to do that to earn a passing grade.  If you pass high school english and can carry on a decent conversation with a person, you'll do fine.

I understand that this kid from Compton doesnt fit your normal mold of what a black ball player with dreads from compton should be.. But fact of the matter is.. he is a college graduate from a top 10 school and did it while playing ball at a high level....and he makes more money than you ever will

I don't know man. Stanford football team made Tiger Woods an honorary captain at a bowl game in 2012. Tiger hasn't gotten a degree from Stanford because he dropped out and turned pro. I don't know if Stanford gave him an honorary degree yet but i'm sure it's in the pipeline. My point being is that if they do shit like that with Tiger, who knows what they do with guys who actually are in line to graduate there.

'Communications' is not considered intellectually rigorous, and its majors perennially score very low on graduate admissions tests. Sherman is a very talented football player, but he scored only 24 on the Wonderlic, which is roughly equivalent to a 108 IQ -- hardly Stanford material, but consistent with his major.

You could have be as smart as Albert Einstein, but if you can run a 4.2 40 and have a 45inch vertical, chances are you are going to make a lot more money playing football than you could ever with your other talents in life. Grant it, I would say a very good amount just have football, but there are a good amount of other guys in the NFL who would be successful off the field as well. The NFL is complex, especially at some positions like QB. You need to have some level of intelligence to play it at a high level.

Its all about the money, competition, and love for the game... mainly money after a certain point. These guys are pulling more money than most CEOs.

It was JMO, for some people making a lot of money, isn't a good thing, I was just suggesting that whoring your physical ability out for large sums of money to entertain the mediocre masses and risking the inevitable injuries and suffering that come from that may not necessarily be considered the wisest long term life decision.  Money isn't everything, and too much is too much.  Personally I don't understand the attraction of football, not American Football, or soccer or the even more ridiculous Aussie Rules Football.  It seems to me to be an archaic masculine ritual for no other reason than to determine who is the biggest Neanderthal.  I wouldn't be so bad if it was done now and again, but to play it every week, what a waste of TIME and of LIFE, sadder still is those who go along and watch it each week, make idiots of themselves in the stands and blow a heap of money for the privilege.  But once again, JMO, I find most of the things the masses participate in either pointless, ludicrous or shameful, so don't mind me.

Both very good academic schools where sports came second to academics. At Tech (after i had transferred  to Morehouse) the starting quarterback (R.Ball) was ruled InEl because of grades and was unable to participate in a Bowl game. Now i do understand that at some schools, you do move along the system but there are schools that will not move you along no matter who you are. Stanford is one of them. Stanfords academic standards of admission are different than Fresno State's and it includes athletics. Why is Tenn better than Vandy year in and year out.  UGA beats out tech. USC and UCLA  and the list goes on and on. Some schools understand that their claim to fame is academics and will not sacrifice education for athletics.  Everyone always says it (ohh its all the same and athletes just get pushed through...) but thats just not as across the board as you think.

Ah, because one needs one health and body to get through all of one's life and not just your twenties and thirties.  Money doesn't help when you walk like a 60 year old man when you are in your 40's, or you have Dementia pugilistica from multiple concussions.  It's not like athletes in these sports are risking their health and well-being for any great cause, it's to entertain a large group of morons.  Essentially, being a fan of sports like football and the like are for adult children, who never grew up and don't have the fortitude to not follow the crowd and talk like an idiot about statistics and who has been drafted and a whole host of other sport related nonsense.  When I was a child I enjoyed these sports, then i grew up.  These sports are like Christmas, for the children.  It isn't any wonder that the word FAN is short for FANATICAL!

It's not like athletes in these sports are risking their health and well-being for any great cause, it's to entertain a large group of morons.

The issue of whether the job serves any essential purpose to society is irrelevant to the issue of whether it is rational for a given individual to take the job (in this case, Sherman).

Ah, because one needs one health and body to get through all of one's life and not just your twenties and thirties.  Money doesn't help when you walk like a 60 year old man when you are in your 40's, or you have Dementia pugilistica from multiple concussions.

There's no doubt that the job entails an increased risk of cognitive problems later in life. But just because such risks exist doesn't mean Sherman is stupid to take the job; that depends on the level of risk involved plus his own interests. For example, the best data I could find just now indicates that "players ages 30 through 49 showed a rate of 1.9 percent, or 19 times that of the national average, 0.1 percent [risk of dementia-related diagnoses]." (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/30/sports/football/30dementia.html?pagewanted=1)

This means that for an under 2% chance of dementia-related problems, Sherman gets to earn at least 9-10x the median income or so doing the thing he loves, the thing he was in some importance sense born to do. Alternatively stated, assuming that if such a diagnosis were handed down Sherman would be rendered a vegetable and unable to utilize his fortune (an extremely simplifying assumption that is absolutely false), the value of his earnings will be something like $4.9 million instead of $5 million (he will clear this amount unless he is knocked out early, as his rookie contract already has him slated to earn $2.2 million and he will fetch far more money his next contract, given his excellent performance).

Clearly, he is acting as almost any intelligent person would, and you are the fool.

These sports are like Christmas, for the children.  It isn't any wonder that the word FAN is short for FANATICAL!

Have you ever considered the possibility that you are the most fanatical person on this board, differing from other fanatics like ahmed only in the specific beliefs held? You might want to consider doing so.

Only you could attempt to make a reasonable and intellectual argument as to why grown men play childish games for the entertainment of the moronic masses.  Whatever I am supposedly fanatical about doesn't cost me a cent, it doesn't see me wearily travelling back and forth week in week out, making an arse out of myself, getting drunk and yelling at overpaid, overgrown children playing silly games.  Justify the actions of these Neanderthal Imbeciles all you like, FOOTBALL will always be considered the province of the uncouth, uneducated and lower classes.  Any man who valued his brain, his intellect and his health, would never participate in such a past time let alone be a fanatical supporter of such time wasting pursuits.  All that youtube video highlighted was how moronic everyone involved in retard games like Football is, from the player, the coaches, the media and the fans.  The real difficulty is deciding who is the greatest Neanderthal, a task made exceptionally difficult due to the very competitive field one has to choose from.

That's because these fat fathers go around worshiping them as well. I have said since day one there is nothing more homosexual than a bunch of grown men obsessing/fantasizing over 20 year old males running around on a field chasing a ball. I cannot think of a more emasculating thing. Worry about your own achievements and successes.

UMBC is another one. Athletics is a distant second to academics. And ironically, Arnold S. is on the board.

I like how grown men collect sports cards. In reality, your just collecting of a bunch of pictures of men.

Skip is an arrogant, never played a sport asshole who thinks he knows more about sports than the Pro athletes that play them. Fuck him. More brothers should be sent to the ghetto

He was/is an intelligent man, so he didn't have to play "sport".

'Communications' is not considered intellectually rigorous, and its majors perennially score very low on graduate admissions tests. Sherman is a very talented football player, but he scored only 24 on the Wonderlic, which is roughly equivalent to a 108 IQ -- hardly Stanford material, but consistent with his major.

x2

The kid got picked up by Stanford due to the millions his presence brought to the institution and the top ranking it gave the team. This is a very common practice and can be seen throughout most of the Ivy leagues with good teams. In exchange for his talent and moneymaking potential, he acquired a degree from one of the best institutions in the country. I call it a fair trade. If and when his NFL career doesn't pan out too well, he has a great degree (albeit not the most practical of degrees) to fall back on and can make a solid living.

He is a talented player and while he lacks a certain level of humility, that can change in time as he ages and matures a little more.

Something to consider is that over 80% NFL players do go bankrupt after retiring from the game. Hopefully, Sherman puts his money to good use and hires a good/honest accountant.

yes, in truth, that's all we are really doing. never forget that.

It's crossed my mind at times for some of these people who WORSHIP a certain athlete/actor/etc. would let them cuckold their wife. Cuz some ppl take it to extremes with their defense of someone they don't even know. I see this on twitter all the time. Begging for a RT or some insane thing like NAMING their child Robert Griffin III lol

I know of a married woman who is awfully close to the Ravens, like very, very close...they hug her, and all that...she is a woman who likes her skirts low, and her heels high...
And I always wondered...

envy/lust is a powerful emotion. you can't buy it, only attain it through power.

Much less than his soiled posing trunks.  In some cultures his old trunks are used as a fertility talisman.

Hi, OMR!
One can only hope Sherman is able to avoid the devastating consequences of financial mismanagement, even if the statistics for NFL players look dismal. His Stanford degree can be gainfully leveraged in a workforce that values pedigree, but I wonder if he can be successful in a highly competitive environment where he is not coddled and protected (especially, from himself).
It's also conceivable that the physical and psychological attributes which make him such a standout on the gridiron can come back to hamstring his efforts in the corporate arena. Brash, intimidating, and arrogant behavior on an ESPN show or football field is one thing, but it's a completely different thing outside the lines, as it were. The "All Pros," hell, the "Honorable Mentions," of the private and public sectors would run circles around, if not intentionally cripple and humiliate, Sherman to bring him down a few pegs (which is why I suspect guys like Sherman insulate themselves by staying around "the game" ad perpetuum).
Although I admire and value superior individuals who are as compassionate and humble as they are gifted, most superior types don't usually suffer fools (unless, of course, there's something to be gained from such tolerance ;D). Still, good luck to Mr. Sherman in his career and beyond.
