Title: who here is "unplugged" ?
Post by: Palpatine Q on October 14, 2013, 11:43:47 AM
I have to be honest, the older I get... I look at this DirecTV bill for $165 and I'm like what the fuck am I paying this kind of money for, to watch television.

I am seriously, seriously thinking about getting a good high and antenna, and whatever I really want to watch just download it like everyone else. And fuck paying these prices. I'm of the opinion that with these DVR's and all this shit, people watched too much goddamn TV anyway.

I sold my first and only TV in 2006. You are just constantly bombarded with useless shit. With the internet you can be much more selective, even though it has its own drawbacks.

All I have is a PC at a desk. And a laptop for watching shows etc.

Lounging back on a couch watching hours of TV makes men soft and weak. We should either be working or sleeping. If you manage to find some time chill with the laptop and watch a show or a sport for 2 hours and eat / relax.

This 6+ hours of tv the idiots watch is a waste of life.

I wish I had the guts to do it, but I don't.  The thing is, with a new baby, I hardly watch TV, maybe an hour a day, and it is either HGTV or Military History.  My bill is about $200 a month, and that is for cable, two phone lines, and internet.  I wish I had a package just for me, but what I have found, is that cable TV is like your favorite artists "Greatest Hits" albums, it has all the songs you like, except for two, that you have to get on two separate TVs.  I like BBC channel, military history, and HGTV, but to get them, they are on different packages, so I end up buying a package with a bunch of other crap just to get one channel I actually watch.  Capitalist pigs!

This.

A good antenna and you get local HD for free for news and sports...and every premium channels gets ripped and the good shows are available online the next day.

I'm also trying to cut down family members just sitting in front of the TV like vegetables watching reruns of fucking friends for 3 hours..get up and DO something.

Tons of Internet, books, music... What's the point of TV, 99% is ads or trash and what you select to watch you can barely keep. Computer , if you know what to do with it, is the ultimate media center, you pick what you want, stock it, I have 3 hard drives , 9 dvds and 4 blu rays full of mp3s, ripped movies, pictures, games I like. Important to save it for kids/grandkids too.

You can also go to your local public library, rent dvds and blu rays for like 1.50 buck and rip them on your hard drive then burn them at home with free software.... I do that when i cant find a good enough version of a movie online.

I don't really see the point in collecting big movie libraries. Used to do it too but then I found I never watched a movie twice anyways so it's a waste of time and effort. Except some really good feel-good comedies. So I just download the torrent one month after release and watch it in hd or blueray.

Having an hd antenna installed later this week on my house, already running a few Rokus and will cut Directv immediately after antenna is installed.

Why?  I've already have Grande Communications cable, Time Warner cable, AT&T UVerse cable and Directv satellite cable....tired of the expense.  Cable and smartphones (for personal use) are pure luxury items and I don't need it anymore.  Some folks are paying 5k a year for cable, internet and smartphones.

That and I'm an alpha maverick.

Is AT&T U-verse available in Arizona? If so it's the best deal! Internet service all phone service and Digital cable about 500 channels plus most premium HBO Showtime etc! All for about $135 a month!

The platinum.cable package is the bulk of this. Platimun includes all premium chanels. Phone and highspeed internet combined are probably a little over $100. We have two phone lines.

And now since I don't have cable---I barely watch anything except football games, and that's it. Everything else is online.
It's useless to me to have cable/DirecTV, because the more channels you have, the less you watch.

Gave cable up a year ago. Wasn't worth the ridiculous prices Time Warner was charging with their monopoly on the region. (still getting shafted with their internet tho)

I get the regular channels for free in HD through the air.

I use a 32 inch LED TV as a monitor for my computer.

I don't miss cable. I download everything I want to watch... mostly HBO and Showtime shows, and HD movies off of torrents.

I also watch a lot of free mma on the internet. But if there's a card or fighter that I really want to see in HD I'll go to hooters or buffalo wild wings.

I don't really watch any other sports than mma. And the internet has always been the biggest home for MMA.

At least getbig is interactive. You get input and output. With tv it's only output. It's a one way stream into your brain.

That's an expensive library...books and movies at our library are so cheap its almost free

I honestly don't mind the places that charge a buck. They usually get more than one copy.

Here they are free and you can never get a damn thing. People go in and fill out request forms for all the new stuff, and it takes forever for it to see the shelf.

I wish they would air mma at the sportbars here. All they show is gay ass soccer and everyone follows it...  :-\

Doesn't help that the fights air 4am because american time.

Get on a good private torrent site or spend an hour setting up newsgroups with Couthpotato, Sickbeard and Sabnzb for your dvr's, set it and forget it, there's absolutely zero reason to pay for cable.

There's also plenty of streaming sites around, but I don't like streaming quality when I can download a full 1080p blu-ray in 40 minutes anyway.

your a fucking homo, how can you sit back and relax watching your sports on a poxy laptop screen....

i work 12hr shifts the majority of the time, so on my gym free nights i vegetate watching sports or films/good series until i start nodding off

Valid point, but it shows just how insignificant it all is to me.

I have a 17" laptop that I put on the coffee table 2 feet from the couch if I want to watch a movie before bed or something.

I mostly watch Youtube and downloaded stuff these days.

If I get bored at night I like to take a nice brisk bike ride on a trail or through a park and enjoy Earth, life, and fresh air. Sitting inside is not how humans were meant to live man...

I don't own a T.V

But I have a shitload of laptops and desktops ~

I repair them so I basically get them for nothing. People will throw away a perfectly good HP that may only need a little soldering, a video card or whatever. Never an expensive fix. Not even replacing a hard drive.

Helps to know about computers. If you like PC's over Macs it makes a world of difference.

laptops have such a fucking high obsolescence rate though... hell, a 1000 buck laptop 2 years ago is barely worth replacing a video card in anymore, as you said people just junk them. I picked up a nice HP from an old coworker and went to replace the video card and resell it, wasnt even worth the price of the card alone. I junked it rather than trying to flip it.

Ok, Prime test your knowledge. What was that PBS show from the 80s-possible early 90s that featured a ship that was a floating lab for kids? It was like a reality show of sorts and it had an adult captain, yet there were teens who conducted experiments of some type and were the crew.

I guess it all depends on how old the thing is. I have replaced many HP video cards for less than $50 bucks with a little added heat sync protection. Usually good to go for another 7 years. I started this in 2000.

Anything older than that could be the suck.

If I can't upgrade, then yeah, trash it is. I'm a huge fan of 7. Not so much of Vista. XP pretty much ain't worth wasting my time even though I love the program. If it's still fixable (broken connection or something stupid like that) I'll keep it.

I'm not really trying to make money flipping these things, I just love having them.

Built my own Desktop strictly for video editing. It's a frickin' powerhouse. Heats up the whole room when clips are rendering. I use Adobe Premier Elements 8 and it sucks A LOT of power! This thing cost me about 4 bills to put together. If I wanted to buy one at Best Buy of equivalent size and power, I woulda paid almost 3 K ~

It all depends. If you have a Desktop PC that is old as hell, I'll still take it just for parts. Other than that most of it will indeed be obsolete. No high speed USB ports, obsolete hard drives, software, the power of a broken Honda...

depends on what you do with it. if you're rendering video or playing games then you need a device with quick turnaround. frankly the only reason i replace mine any more is because i just keep breaking the fucking things. for someone whose primary use for a computer is work, communication, and watching movies or listening to music, a laptop from FIVE years ago would still suffice.

I must admit that my evenings are spent watching mostly network television shows with my wife. I will also often watch The Chew with her in the afternoon. She records it everyday that it airs. Needless to say, with winter approaching, television viewing at our house is on the upswing. It could be a senior thing. Watching television is easier than trying to figure some other thing to do with the day. Most of you work. My wife and I are retired. We have more time on our hands then most folks. And if that sounds like an excuse, well it is.

The thing is, I was mistaken about my Comcast bill. It is actually up to $275 a month provided we don't rent any movies. This is disgusting and absurd. Although we can well afford this, it seems somehow wrong. There has to be a cheaper means of entertainment. I am going to look into dish tomorrow. One thing that really irks me is that Comcast rewards new customers with special deals, while us longtime subscribers pay the full bore price. We are their gravy train and I don't like it one bit.

You shouldn't be under a contract with Comcast. Which means you can threaten to leave and then ask for the best deal that a new subscriber would get.

I pray that you are not being literal here.

I am being literal. There were laws against gay sex in the 1950's and 1960's.

Quote
Sodomy laws in the United States, which outlawed a variety of sexual acts, were historically universal. While they often targeted sexual acts between persons of the same sex, many statutes employed definitions broad enough to outlaw certain sexual acts between persons of different sexes as well, sometimes even acts between married persons.

Through the 20th century, the gradual liberalization of American sexual mores led to the elimination of sodomy laws in most states. During this time, the Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of sodomy laws in Bowers v. Hardwick in 1986. However, in 2003 the Supreme Court reversed the decision with Lawrence v. Texas, invalidating sodomy laws in the remaining 14 states (Alabama, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, and Virginia).

Prior to 1962, sodomy was a felony in every state, punished by a lengthy term of imprisonment and/or hard labor. In that year, the Model Penal Code (MPC) — developed by the American Law Institute to promote uniformity among the states as they modernized their statutes — struck a compromise that removed consensual sodomy from its criminal code while making it a crime to solicit for sodomy. In 1962 Illinois adopted the recommendations of the Model Penal Code and thus became the first state to remove criminal penalties for consensual sodomy from its criminal code, almost a decade before any other state.

You shouldn't be under a contract with Comcast. Which means you can threaten to leave and then ask for the best deal that a new subscriber would get.

You are right of course. I could threaten to leave and I may. I plan to explore my options first. It is possible dish might be a better solution. Unfortunately, there are no other options besides dish available at this time where I live. Comcast almost has a monopoly which explains why they can charge as much as they do.
