I posted some pics up of us not too long ago. He works out with me every day. Lifts as heavy as possible, using the heaviest dumbells we have on the rack.
He is a strong S.O.B both mentally and physically.
Between myself and another very close friend of his, we truly believe that he is the one who made Arnold who he is today.
He came to workout yesterday. He went to return home after one set. He is now in the E.R.
He has had multiple strokes and one heart attack in the past. He has been bedridden and wheelchair bound many times, only to be right back at it with the weights.
This guy is "old school" more than anyone knows. He is 80 years old. Had his birthday a few weeks back.
He wasn't looking so hot last week.
I am a bit worried about him this time around.
Thanks for those who believe in the power of prayers.
If anyone cares, I will keep this thread updated.
-
I do not believe in the power of prayer, my friend.
.. but I do think it is plausible that I may be the universe, in its entirety.
And if that is the case, it is my will that Ed Corney continues to walk this earth.
It's my top priority.

Still training hard at 80, living his life on his terms, true legend of the sport.

Neither will Ed....
There is a reason that Ed was not featured more in the movie "Pumping Iron" ~ I will ask him if it's O.K for me to tell everyone why ~
(gotta get him back in the gym and in good health first...)
A lot of older bodybuilders probably already know this, but Franco was not Arnold's first choice ~ lotta controversy surrounds that movie that I didn't even know about.

-
This statement from Iron Man:
Feb 1968 p 43 pho @ won Mr. Fremont (Calif), mm; has 9 children,
Is that accurate? If so, then the 2002 interview of him in MMI is not; it said he had been married twice with one child from the first marriage, two from the second?

I think this was from around the time Arnold and Franco were not training together, as Franco had University courses for Chiropractic College.
They sort of drifted apart after living together for some time...

Why do you need prayers?
Let nature take its course whatever that may be...thats what will happen anyway whether you or the entire world prays for him or not.
A better question is who needs the prayers? I am not a prayer, but I believe in the power of positive thinking. Human nature dictates that most people want to take some manner of active role in these types of situations, but are often at a lost as to what to do. Prayer is something that is universally accepted and acceptable. And why not? What does it hurt to pray for someone? I suspect praying is often more of a comfort for the person doing the praying then it is for the person being prayed for.
Nature will take it's course, just as you suggest. If/when Ed passes, some of the people who prayed for him will then pray for his soul and some will be disappointed because they will feel their prayers weren't answered. It's all part of the human experience.
Why do I feel like I am responding to a space alien? Your handle is interesting. Is meaningless how you feel about life?

Great pics dyslexic,thanks for sharing.
You must feel honored knowing Ed so well.
By the way,I have that same Arnold/Venice Beach logo on a very ancient T-shirt.........of course the sleeves on it somehow mysteriously disappeared! :D
All the best to you, and of course Ed Corney.

Thanks Wes.
I saw some earlier comments of yours and forgot to thank you for those props also.
It is a huge privilege to be working out side-by-side with him.
I own 2 copies of Pumping Iron. Actually 3 if you count the VHS. I have the anniversary edition also. I never in my wildest dreams would have imagined that I would even be near Ed, Arnold, Lou or Franco.
We watched Pumping Iron for motivation and now, how many years later it comes right back and lands in my lap?
Ed is an inspiration to ALL in our gym. Even the girls ask for his autograph... lol
(He seems to still have an affinity for the pretty women, no matter how old) ~ that is inspiring and motivating also.
Because he has been in a wheelchair numerous times and refuses to stay down, many other younger guys who know his story and have been advised by their doctors NOT to lift weights are now OFF of the damn treadmills and out in the gym where they belong... with the free weights.. the iron...
He gets everyone going. When he is in the gym it's almost surreal.
As far as the update, sadly, he is not back yet. I work there 7 days a week, so I will be posting up as soon as he walks in that door!!!
-
I didn't think he was still able to train. Great man. A legend in the BBing world.
That scene in PI of him squatting inspires me to this day and the example I always use when comparing how they trained back then to how they train now.
I remember how common it was back in the day for guys to collapse to the floor or even puke after a set of squats. I remember Benny Podda forcing out those last few reps like his life depended on it when blood burst from his nose.
-
Thanks Wes.

That`s cool bro.
I still watch PI to this day occasionally........I`m even in two crowd scenes in the movie where Mike Katz is guest posing at a local contest I attended back in prehistoric times. :D
I remember when Ed got sick and was confined to a wheelchair, but he survived and never gave up,only to train hard once again.
Truly an inspiration, and a true legend.
The stuff he has been through medically without giving up should inspire people who complain about miniscule trivial bullshit......myself included.
I hope you have many more years of training with Ed.

Alright Ed !!
Looks to be in great spirits. :)

dyslexic,
Thank you for keeping us well informed with regards to Ed's progress.
Ed Corney is a true legend in the bodybuilding world.
He exemplifies what it truly means to be a bodybuilder. His look throughout the years is exactly what I strived for as a young man. His intensity and passion for bodybuilding would always show as he posed.
He is a master at his craft and was around during the true golden age of bodybuilding.
Here's to a speedy recovery!
"1"
P.S. dyslexic, once Ed recovers from all of this, lets talk about getting him onto GetBig for a nice Q&A session. We would love to have him here for his in-depth knowledge of the sport throughout the last 40+ years.
-
first a lot of respect to you dyslexic supporting Ed.
it shows how a real person you are...Thank you.
I talked to Ed few times n the past.
Such an amazing person and an inspiration.
wishing you a fast recovery Ed.
-
Thanks for the updates!
He's a true iron warrior. My favorite character in pumping iron.
All the best for him.

That man is nothing but smiles.
He is. Don't know how you knew, but he is always smiling except when he is struggling to get those 120's off the DB rack ~
BIG SMILES!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
Hope he pulls through. One of the legends, for sure.
-
Artistic yet masculine! The same poses in different fashion...never repetitive!
Sending positive vibes for a speedy recovery...
Posing master.....he poses for 4 minutes here....if you've never tried posing for 4 minutes and making it look effortless give it a go :)

dyslexic....I still want to hear what Ed has to say about those "last two reps" in the squat video from 'Pumping Iron' :)
-
Well, let's just put it this way: They are a series of "expletives..."
I really have to talk to Ed when he gets back and ask him how many stories he wouldn't mind that I share here. He's got thousands... literally.
Maybe you can do a Q&A talk with him and put it on Youtube, or maybe a serie in case he talks forever, lol
-
DYSLEXIC, Thanks for the update regarding ED.
I'm also a friend of Ed's. Have known Ed since the days of Bob's Gym before he got his pro card and if I recall correctly ... Myself and wayne ANderson went with Ed to that pro qualifying event
.. but I have long forgotten those detrails.
I have just finished talking with Wayne and he talked to Ed on the phone yesterday and without going into too much detail ... all seems well ... which is a big relief for many of us.
I still recall the day that I had lunch with Ed at the GERMAN's in Venice and he told me that he had decided to retire from BB competitions and would be announcing it officially that week.
I forgot those exact detials also but I realized that Bodybuilding would be missine a darn fine individual when he left.
But in reality he never did leave baecause he never really quit lifting heavy things.
Thanks again, DYS!
-
best poser ever in my books. glad to hear he is feeling better now.

-
Awesome....glad to see him out there in the sun. Thanks for keeping us updated dys
-
That just might work. I'll let him get settled in and see what he thinks...
Gotta make sure I bring a hot chick and a Tootsie Pop with me or it ain't gonna happen... lol
Glad you liked the idea Dys, and I hope he feels the same way.
Maybe we can create a list with subjects?
For instance, I would love to know what/who inspired him to pose so powerful and graceful. Maybe he has some suggestions for the novice athletes? Thanks.
-
Great to hear that he`s out of the hospital and doing OK,as well as looking great!
Nothing but respect and admiration for a true legend, and who just seems like a damn good guy to boot.

Oh hell yeah! If you guys are serious, post up the questions. I will ask him all of them.. (unless the gimmicks step in) but I can sit at Google (like I said before) and he will tell me where he was and what he was doing and what was going on behind the scenes.
Like I was telling another friend here: I just mainly listen when he speaks. I'm like a sponge when he talks. I can keep the conversation going, but I don't want it to EVER feel like an interview. I just want him to open up freely.
He is not a glamour queen in any way, shape or form.
His main concern is Heavy weights, High volume, his Tootsie Pops and the Tang... ya know? The young girls still are in awe of him and of course, he of them.
I will talk more when he chills after his workouts. I personally don't think he would let anyone do it but me at this point. He really digs my GF... and that's fine. As long as she is there, he will be REAL happy.
^^
I'll start off some questions, and I'm no gimmick...
1) What did he and Arnold REALLY eat on a daily basis, and did they have a cheat day once a week??
2) Does he remember what Steroid cycle was used during the PUMPING IRON movie when he and Arnold were getting in shape for the 1975 Mr. Olympia??
3) What is his FAVORITE famous training partners during his career??
-
1.What did Ed really think of Franco?
2.What was the reason for the animosity between Franco and Zane and which one did it come from?
3.I've always thought that Rick Wayne was the best short bodybuilder in the late sixties and was better than Franco. Why do you think he never place higher?
-
What was his favorite Corvette that he owned?
-
How old was he when he started having heart attacks and strokes? Was he still active in bodybuilding? In any case, this is sad news, hope his health improves.
-
-Best lifts
-Daily food intake

ED.......GREAT TO HAVE YOU HERE AT GETBIG!!!!
IN THE 70S AND 80S......WHAT DID YOU TYPICALLY EAT PRE WORKOUT AND POST WORKOUT?
HOW LONG DID YOUR WORKOUTS USUALLY LAST?
WHAT WAS ARNOLD REALLY LIKE?
-
Who was the hardest trainer in Gold in its heyday?
Who does Ed thinks was his biggest rival/opponent in any contests he ever entered?
Who was his closest friend in Golds Gym back then?
Thanks Ed and dyslexic for the time and consideration.
-
Get him back to the gym as soon as possible.
-
Well, Ed came back in the gym today after being diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure. Doc's orders were: "Cardio Only!"
Ed and I had a discussion to make sure this happened.
It did not. Ed is ashen. For those of you who don't know the meaning of that word (not condescending b/c there are many nationalities here that may not be familiar with the word...
ash·en1
ˈaSHən/Submit
adjective
1.
of the pale gray color of ash.
"the ashen morning sky"
I gave him a hug. He sat on the Recumbant bike, but he hated it. He didn't even pedal....
I turned away for a moment and he was back at the weights. I'm not gonna have his demise in my gym. Things aren't as good as I'd thought they would be upon his return. Weight lifting, regardless of the amount of weight used is dangerous for him at this time.
Clint Eastwood once said "A man's got to know his limitations" and obviously Ed does not. I get it, but I can't abide by it.
So, here is your update with pics. This may be the last time we see him. Arnold's number is in his phone, which, consequently is left on my desk while Ed trains. Arnold is a great man, but he is also an arrogant and selfish S.O.B. ~ yeah, I said it.
There isn't really anyone that can stop Ed and I'm not Dr. Kavorkian. This won't be good for our reputation. If the exercises don't contraindicate his anaerobic workouts, his Meds do.... I don't really care who disagrees with me. "Grant the man his last wishes, etc. etc."
I promised you fuckers an update and I'm holding up my end of the deal. (Don't take that the wrong way) ~ I wouldn't be here if I didn't give a shit about this board. A lot of you guys have PM'd me consistently about Ed or even some of my posts. Lots of good guys here, of that there is no dispute in my head.
Here ya go. I've torn my abdominal wall before and it wasn't with Dumbells or Barbells... it was with the *very* machine Ed is sitting on. Does it look like he is lifting light and easy? Does it?
This may be the last time you see him. Not being negative. Being REAL. Get it? Yeah, I'm pissed. So what?
Ed refusing to pedal:
(http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x263/timeamajorova/EdCorneyBackcardionotcopy_zpsbb32c7ec.jpg) (http://s183.photobucket.com/user/timeamajorova/media/EdCorneyBackcardionotcopy_zpsbb32c7ec.jpg.html)
Give him props. Fine. I don't want him dying in my gym. If the anaerobic exercises don't contraindicate, his meds do. Remember that.
(http://i183.photobucket.com/albums/x263/timeamajorova/EdCorneybackfromHospitalCHFcopy_zpsd636b802.jpg) (http://s183.photobucket.com/user/timeamajorova/media/EdCorneybackfromHospitalCHFcopy_zpsd636b802.jpg.html)
Happy to see him back? Yes. Happy to see him lifting hard again? No. Catch 22 bitches. I love you all, and I hate you all. Bear with me while I blow off some steam. You older guys, give advice and opinions.
I'm calling Arnold. Who cares? At this point in time, trust me when I say Arnold is just another guy. Am I being dramatic? I train people. I train those clients that nobody else wants. I train the convalescents. I train the injured. I do rehab and physical therapy... and I know better.
My grandfather, believe it or not, was just like this. When he got cataracts and was running through stop signs almost killing women with children in strollers, and the DMV and P.D wanted to take his license, his attitude was this: "Ive been driving 80 years. Who could possibly tell me I can't drive anymore?"
I took his car keys for good.
Here's the question: "Can I take Ed's car keys?"
I think not. Nor can I ban him from my gym. This is where he want's to be. This is where it's all gonna end. Wow.
History in the making. I will never forgive myself.
Make sure you tell Arnold to log in on Getbig if you get the chance. He hasn`t been on in a while.
-

Rick Wayne is killing everyone in arms in that pic
-
God,I hope he doesn`t worsen his illness.
It`s gotta` be tough to not train, especially being Ed Corney, but health has to come first, especially at his age and after all of the health related problems he`s been through.
All the best to Ed and you to dyslexic.......keep an eye on him bud.
-
As long as a person with chf lifts in moderation he or she should be ok. I'm not a cardio pulm doc n I don't know ed personally. All I'm saying is ask him to keep things fairly light n it's better than not being there. N what drugs is he in the contraindicate weight lifting?
Btw. R u the guy who always accompanies him at the arnold. Love ed!
-
Sorry to hear this dys.....I say let him do what he wants.
If its his time he'd want to go out like this.
I had an aunt once who on her death bed was whispering she wanted a rum and coke...all the older relatives in the room were in shock and of course ruled it out.I should have went back in there when they all left and gave her a few rum and cokes.
She passed the following day.
My 2 cents
-
I would actually suggest calling Arnold, him and Ed have history together, he might be able to talk some sense into him.
-
Quite a mixed feelings post Dys, and I can understand that. But listen, if you care about him, which you obviously do, then forbid him to do any weights, just be honest with him! In case something happens, then not only the reputation of your gym and you as a staff member will be damaged, but you will prob also feel guilty for the rest of your life.
Well, that's just my honest opinion.
-
Dys, how about trying to compromise with him using very light weights so it is basically aerobic! He probably is too stubborn but it's worth a try! Prolong the greatest poser in Bodybuilding's life as long as possible!
-
The guy is, what, 70-80 something? Let him lift, even if it kills him. He's lived a long, good life, and being told you can only do cardio is probably unthinkable for him. And most of us can probably empathize. Let the guy enjoy his final days/months/years.
No way will his possible death reflect poorly on you or your gym. Either way, thanks for the update.
-
The benefits of aerobics have always been over-rated. Bodybuilding suits older guys. You do a set then rest. As you age you can rest a bit longer. The sets accumulate and you get the benefit. Let Ed continue to train as he figures is best for him.
Many of us older bodybuilders simply avoid any aerobics at all. If his body is used to the weights then he will cope with that kind of exercise.
-
He's 80.
Let the man lift. If he wants to be known as the guy that died in the gym with an arm pump and a smile so be it. He earned that.
-

Yeah, what if the family decides to file a lawsuit after he dies in the gym?

there is emerging evidence that even a moderate aerobic exercise is good for long term brain health
Get at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise each day. Aerobic exercise actually activates the DNA that turns on the growth of the hippocampus, giving you a second chance at not only preserving, but actually enhancing memory function.

Yeah, what if the family decides to file a lawsuit after he dies in the gym?
Well, first off every gym membership has hold harmless verbiage in the contract...and since this guy has had strokes and cardio issues well in the past I'd say the risk of that is known and possibly even less with a recent event.
If he works out for free and there is no paperwork, then yeah I guess get something signed.

I`m sure his family could easily claim that he is not of sound mind. One photograph of him at 80 years old "attempting" to "lift" 140 lb dumbbells for rows shown to a jury would be an easy sell.

He's a known quantity, hundreds of pics and many videos of him lifting with unusual intensity - into old age, post stroke with white hair.
I would wager that the family would lose...provided the case was tried in Florida or Texas, haha.
-
Yeah, what if the family decides to file a lawsuit after he dies in the gym?
They wouldn't win. His condition is personal, the gym won't be held accountable.
-
wow great thread, wish him the very best.
-
Sounds like you are in the unenviable position where you have to decide whether you are Ed's friend, or the gym owner.
-
Ed is in his 80's. If he wants to check out fighting the good fight; leave him alone and wish him well. It's not like either way is going to make a big difference at this point.
-
Thanks dys

You know what? This thread makes history. I agree with every single one of your responses.
Put yourself in my shoes. Look back over the responses. I said it. I AGREE with EVERY response, but I have to make a decision. Ed is a fucking LEGEND. What right do I have to do anything to stop him from his death wish?
And "NO" I am MOST DEFINITELY NOT that guy that comes to every show with him. He and I do NOT get along. The chick? Yes, but the other guy (no names) NO, NO, NO!!!!! he is a guy and still lives with mommy. He brings Ed to the gym, but Ed does NOT workout with him. Why? Because "this guy" comes to the gym to talk. Every gym has one. Ed is there to workout.
Fuck my life.

Thanks for your responses and PM's ~ I still keep you fucks updated. Love you bitches. All of you. Homo? Yeah, sure. Whatever floats your boat.
I guess I'm still pissed. Thought I would be cool by now but this ain't over. Maybe I'm a control freak. Maybe I want it to end MY way and not Ed's. Again, who the fuck am I? Why did he wind up in my gym?
I think to much, but then the rest don't think at all.
More pics tomorrow....
God willing.
Peace. Out.
Are those 140's WTF, hide the heavy dumbbells when Ed comes in!

How come you say you and Ed don't get along?
-
How come you say you and Ed don't get along?
I think he said the guy who comes in with Ed he doesn't get along with, not Ed.
-

Ok, I misunderstood.
-
Dys, how about trying to compromise with him using very light weights so it is basically aerobic! He probably is too stubborn but it's worth a try! Prolong the greatest poser in Bodybuilding's life as long as possible!
That's actually a good point. When you find out that someone is stubborn, and I believe that many elder people fell into this category, then you need to seek for compromises.
-
The guy is, what, 70-80 something? Let him lift, even if it kills him. He's lived a long, good life, and being told you can only do cardio is probably unthinkable for him. And most of us can probably empathize. Let the guy enjoy his final days/months/years.
No way will his possible death reflect poorly on you or your gym. Either way, thanks for the update.
Speaking as an old guy, I agree with this.
-

with all respect to Ed judging by wutever the fuk he's trying to to w those 140s he's not gonna listen anyway. He should know better but at his age I guess just him getting that db off the rack is impressive.
-
Yeah, what if the family decides to file a lawsuit after he dies in the gym?
Fuck lawsuits....they will always be around... but ed won't!
-
I agree, but.. just maybe... Ed will make that decision himself.
He did not show up to the gym today. I went to see him and he wasn't making any sense and he looked bad. His speech was slurred... I didn't like seeing him like that.
I know a lotta you guys don't believe in prayers, but maybe you could make an exception just this once? Just once?
That's the dilemma; should someone make any(!) decision for himself or should a someone else intervene, in case it's obvious that this person is harming himself?
Like I've wrote before, in case I were a gym owner, then I would intervene. But I can't oversee the whole picture in this particular case, only you can.
-
As much as I would hate it, I would restrict from doing heavy weights. If he ends up hurting himself even more or dies, the family of Ed's won't give a shit and sue you for some quick cash. Even if you would prevail, it would cost you a ton of money and no one in the industry will lift a finger for foot the bill.
Tell Ed that you respect them...then politely show him the door.
-
Sounds like Ed had another stroke if his speech was impaired. Get him to a hospital.
-
BOOOOYAH!!! ED IS RELEASED!!!!!

He looks great for 80!

1.What did Ed really think of Franco?
2.What was the reason for the animosity between Franco and Zane and which one did it come from?
3.I've always thought that Rick Wayne was the best short bodybuilder in the late sixties and was better than Franco. Why do you think he never place higher?
Zane had some size on him in that pic. Hard to believe, but there was a time when Zane actually weighed 220-225 pounds.
-
Well, Ed came back in the gym today after being diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure.

Give him props. Fine. I don't want him dying in my gym. If the anaerobic exercises don't contraindicate, his meds do. Remember that.

This reminds me of the movie "The Wrestler" when Mickey Rourke had the heart attack and was warned not to get back in the ring and the last scene is him returning back to the ring and we see he's having another heart attack. Hope Ed can let his pride go and listen to the docs orders. Would be a shame if he didn't, but like in the Wrestler, he wanted to "go" doing what he loved.

Ed was never that big. Competed at his best weighing about 180lbs.
-
Maybe it's best to give the man some privacy. Coming here giving details every day about his current health condition. Even if he "says it's ok" it might be best to work through this situation privately.

Exactly.

That was actually going to be my last post...
This had all started in hopes that he would get better and return at 100% ~ and that he would become interactive with us all here. It was not my intention for the thread to take this direction. You have to understand also that I receive multiple PM's from those who are truly concerned about Ed and his health.
At this point I will say "goodbye" to this thread.
Thank You all, on behalf of Ed Corney.

I said Zane, not Ed ;)

I enjoy the updates dys and hope you continue.

I was talking about Ed not Zane.

Thanks for the updates. I met Ed in San Jose at the fair. Super friendly. I had a great 60 year run in the sport myself, never reaching Ed's cred but not bad for a gym rat. I say let him do what he must. Reeves hung it up and did power walking. LaLanne never stopped. Draper cranks on. Pearl, fat as a duck, still trains daily. Scott got skinny but still lifts daily. I watched Eifferman lift very heavy right up to his stroke/wheelchair. I hung it up for mountain hiking.
-
He dint eat her corn
-
I spoke to Ed last week in San Jose. His speech is laboured and soft. He can walk but was using a scooter some of the time.

Yup.
He's backing off a bit. No balance when he stands.
still loves the shit outta the Fembots though ~
I'm sure everyone picked up on the finger implications in his pic after his release. He was Hell on wheels in the hospital to the nurses....
Kept asking for "Kit Kat's" ~ ha ha....

Fembots, fingers, Kit Kats. No f'n clue what you're talking about.

Is a scooter something like a walker? Perhaps he needs this for security reasons. Some folks become very unsteady on their feet when they are ill. My wife uses a walker all of the time.
-
Who was the hardest trainer in Gold in its heyday?
Who does Ed thinks was his biggest rival/opponent in any contests he ever entered?
Who was his closest friend in Golds Gym back then?
Thanks Ed and dyslexic for the time and consideration.
Arnold's stack,haha

picturing more of a hove around.
