Coach, is crossfit a big competitor of your gym? You put so much anti crossfit stuff on this board. Have you ever tried training a couple of weeks at a crossfit gym? Most power lifters and bodybuilders leave with their tail between their legs because truth be told underneath it all they are out of shape by real standards.

mate if i took half of These guys here for a run...i know they would not make it. i agree with you on most things but crossfit is blown out of Proportion. The Training is good up to a Point. You know what i mean by loose form.

Why?

There's difference between training smart and training dumb. You can make both hard it's just depends on what route you want to take it.

It isn't crossfit...its the people who train like that. Its the people who act like they're world class athletes because they snatch massive ten lbs plates. Its the cult part. There's a dude in my a neighborhood is big into it. He has a garage gym with a cage etc. His wife also has a band of neighborhood wives who train together. He's an Air Force pilot trainer. He and his wife were doing some kind of fucked up wheelbarrow thing up and down the street last week. He's done push ups in front of my house as he does some "fran" thing. I have a prowler..everytime I get tempted to just use it in the front yard I think of this dude and just load it up and take it to the gym. Crossfit is fine, its some of the people that are douches.

exactly. it's the fad workout right now. it's like when people post up pictures of some 550 pound dude in a bench shirt struggling with 315 and going "LOL POWERLIFTING" or a picture of a skinny douchebag doing curls with his fake tan and muscletech and going "LOL BODYBUILDING".

Crossfit is an injury waiting to go off.

BTW it's also worth noting that the OP video is making the rounds in CF circles with titles like "just because you can do something doesn't mean you should" and "this is why people mock crossfit".
so... again. this isn't in any way shape or form representative of crossfit. it's someone who does it doing something really fucking stupid. it's like watching a guy who competes in strongman try to lift like an engine over his head and dropping it on his face.
i've said it a million times. none of the ridiculous photos and videos are EVER anything that's actually in a workout. most CF workouts are pretty much modified oly or pl workouts with a METCON thrown in.
-

Just to be clear I don't go to crossfit gyms. I have looked into it extensively though. I think showing youtubes of beginners who fail at lifts or exercises doesn't really put down crossfit. Take some of their top tier guys and tell me they are not in shape. I think for the most part it's a good program to get into shape. It's only as hard or as easy a program as you make it. I have seen film of cross fit guys cleaning over 315 for reps, running, doing chins and dips for time that really is amazing.
-
wjat are u faggets arguing for?
-
I can't hate on it. I've done powerlifting for crossfit seminars and alot of the top guys respect it. I also think that a baseline program would and is very affective for training soldiers. I think its the shit that surrounds it...the outfits..on the dudes anyway. My wife was seriously thinking of doing it, luckily Jill Mills is local and she trains with her. Its alot of the same stuff but she's trained by an expert instead of a dude who went to 1 cert class and opened a box. The one good thing is that people are training harder, chalk, the equipment etc has become more mainstream.
-

I think everybody is agreeing. Coach hates it...his posts on it are funny as hell.

that's why glenn pendlay called crossfit the best thing to happen to weightlifting.
zip the clock back 5 years. 10. 25. the "fad" workouts were all nautilus or pink dumbbells, rubber band gizmos and "in just 15 minutes a day, 3 days a week!" bullshit. now the "fad" is heavy weights, compound movements, and pushing your body to the limits.
the sport is also, what, about 6 years old? it's in its infancy. in 10 years when all the bullshit gets trimmed out it's going to be just another sport like strongman or PL. remember that all of these are offshoots of one another. there used to just be circus exhibitions. then there was olympic lifting. then powerlifting and bodybuilding sprang from that. now we have crossfit. that's all.
-
Crossfit is stupid at every level !

compound lifts yes but not like i see in Crossfit. I am no expert in Olympic lifts but These guys know what they are doing with Trainers. What you see often in crossfit is explosive movements with no control and no real understanding of powerlifting principles
-
1995....
I think another issue with Crossfit at the Crossfit games level..how many of those people where shlubs before crossfit? They were all studs to begin with and then either through injury or whatever found crossfit. The folks who compete at that level are machines.
I hope this leads to more people taking part in olympic lifting....the US gets smoked and there's like 5 dudes doing it.
-

There was a really good article on why crossfit is viewed like it is and the reason is the business end has outgrown the pool of experts. People are getting certs 1k a pop..by retards. If your lucky to get training by the core guys your ok but just like the dudes at Golds...way to many untrained experts. The folks at golds will have u squat 20lbs and curl the 5's. The crossfit dudes have u OHP'ing and snatching....its a shitshow most of the time.
The AirForce has banned crossfit as an organized thing in their gyms. I'm Army and I know we've built plenty of crossfit gyms overseas but apparrently the AF doesn't endorse the program due to a huge increase in injuries. You can crossfit all you want in the gym but they won't set a room up with equipment for that express purpose.

I wish Arthur Jones was still alive so I can read his comments on CrossFit. It was literally the opposite of everything he stood for.

Crossfit breeds this kind of idiocy.
Fuck crossfit.

Good concept horrible programming or as like to say.... Throw shit up against the wall and hope it sticks.

Thinking about another man in high heels. Interesting Joe.
Want to take a bet on how many Crossfit threads you're going to make this year? Magoo owned the fuck out of you on one of your threads....surprised you made another. Your material is old and worn out....

Krankenstein has an app on his phone that texts him anytime an anti-crossfit thread is created here.

It started out mentioning a woman who pushed herself hard in a cross fit work out then experienced muscle pain that would not subside and was paralyzing she went to the hospital and they diagnosed her with a specific condition ( I can't recall the proper term) I believe it was titled cross fits dirty little secret or something similar

Oh, I think you're referring to rhabdo.

Yes! Thank you. it was a topic of conversation and it was annoying me that I could not remember the conditions proper name.

That stupid kipping pullup though is a part of a lot of crossfitting. ;D

Oh, I think you're referring to rhabdo.
How do you pronounce the full word correctly?
-
Why not just do basic, non highly skill dependent exercises with good form for high reps?
Squat for 20 , do pull downs, then dips or whatever, rinse repeat.
Why cause so much trauma to your body?
-
How do you pronounce the full word correctly?
Rhabdomyolysis
My girl is a nurse and has seen a handful of crossfitters come into the ER with this.

Actually, you didn't. All you could do it post the same drivel you always do...those people that are retards and are attention whores.

I hate how people say Crossfit is better than Nautilus.
Nautilus started a virtual revolution. And it was SAFE.
I know some very good athletes that were directed towards Crossfit. Each and every one of them has nagging injuries at the very least, some serious injuries at the worst.
Coach and I may disagree about proper strength training protocols (I don't think a WSB template applies to most athletes, as it is a program geared towards equipped lifters who powerlift/compete in organizations with bastardized definitions of what a squat is (barely parallel at best, wide stance; sumo deadlifting, etc.)
However, it is MALPRACTICE to injure your athlete in the gym. A strength and conditioning coach is there to better prepare their athlete not only for the athletic endeavor, but to prevent injury/downtime from injury.
Crossfit overstepped its bounds when it marketed itself as a "sport" unto itself.
The only gym owner I know who started out as Crossfit who is very successful is the one who went and got Olympic Lifting Certifications, and he makes sure that he doesn't take the middle aged housewife and go full throttle with the program.

Arthur Jones was not only little but a seriously out of shape guy.

I actually don`t know much about Crossfit, but some of the ridiculous stuff I`ve seen in vids was enough to make me avoid giving two fucks about it and looking into it any further.
Like oldtimer said earlier,I`m sure there are some people involved who are great at it,use decent weight, impeccable form, etc.,but I would bet a dollar to a donut, these are the exceptions to the rule.
Women training with a baby strapped to her chest, uninformed idiots trying to do technical Oly lifts, ridiculous kipping chins that make them proud of their "prowess",and so on.
I`ll stick to training my balls off old school style the way I was taught, and looking decent, over looking stupid without even realizing it.
Hey wait.......... :D
-
Donīt buy the muscle mags anymore but my son buys them.. i was shocked how much crossfit was in it.
extremely sad....crossfit is just plain wrong.

Again....people live to point out the morons who are in the CF 'community'. Tell me you haven't seen as big (or bigger) douche bags in bodybuilding. The synthol ladden fucks....the shitty kids and their 1200mg of test a week after only 2yrs of training. The 2" ROM on squats all the while wearing the Dre Beats headphones and drinking their C4 before training.
People can have their bash-fest with CF.....I could point out all the morons with BBing to counter everything. Here's one....Kali Muscle (seriously???? bash CF and this guy doesn't have a fucking thread weekly??)
-
^^^ I can`t argue with you there.........there`s clowns to the left of me,jokers to the right, and I`m stuck in the middle with you.
NO HOMO

Crossfit defenders are a rabid bunch.

Crossfit defenders are a retarded bunch of homos.
Fixed. You're welcome.

This pretty much sums of Crossfit...

Most of the "instructors" have done a few "Workshops" and are experts in CF... what a load of crap. Burpees i first did in 1985...

I'm not a hater, to each his own, but....isn't it kind of poorly thought out that they have soccer moms doing very high volume Olympic lift workouts? Especially the over head stuff. This kind of rattles my common sense detectors.

don't see the problem with it, what better way to get your 1000 practice kicks in, as bruce would say?

I've seen a correlation with high volume overhead movements and AC/GH joint injuries....seems newbies (ie. middle aged women new to athletics) would be even more susceptible to injury with such a lack of neuro-muscular foundation and coordination. No?

You are so right. powerlifting lifts you have to learn...explosive ...yes but with the form you see in Crossffit---jeez
-
I don't see anything wrong with high volume in itself. If volume is high, weight should be low. If the person is new, each rep should be supervised. Etc.
Now, using high-volume olympic lifts to kick the ass of an untrained person so that they can appreciate the difficulty of crossfit... no good.

Maybe you're just not aware of the detrimental effects of high volume and overhead compound movements....
Hint: what is the function of the shoulder? Therein lies your answer.

google overuse injuries.

google overuse injuries.
sure thing coach. google sent me this:
Overuse injuries, otherwise known as cumulative trauma disorders, are described as tissue damage that results from repetitive demand over the course of time. The term refers to a vast array of diagnoses, including occupational, recreational, and habitual activities.
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/313121-overview
is this a good definition? so, how much "volume" of overhead movements can I do each time i do my crossfit workout (lets say daily) before i get "tissue damage"?
-
if i do 1000 overhead squats with a broom handle, am i going to ruin my shoulder?
Very possible. As seen in tons of occupational injuries. Most common: painters. Lots of shoulder impingement, rotator cuff arthropathy, etc. This concept is old news too, I didn't invent this or the injuries. Been around for awhile.

100 squat thrusts per day while wearing a lifting belt will be your specific threshold.

how many can i do then... what do you think is reasonable?
-

thanks stud, your input has been invaluable. just waiting for confirmation from the coach before i do anything drastic...
-
how many can i do then... what do you think is reasonable?
Depends. My son had severe rotator cuff tendonitis last year after his retarded coach had him catch the ENTIRE 9 inning per game 6 game tournament then the next day go into full throwing practice. During the his third long toss throw he felt it. During the last game of the tournament he pulled himself out after me and several other parents warned him of injury. He threw over 1100 balls that weekend. It took him about 5-6mos to fully recover.

Better than what? If you want to balance on Swiss balls moving weights around or perform ballistic almost acrobatic feats than Cross Fit is vastly superior. If you want to improve health, fitness and muscular strength then there are much better and safer ways to do it.
I don't considered Cross Fit to be a fitness protocol as such, although you have to be very fit to perform it, just like I don't consider MMA to be a fitness protocol though you have to be in incredible shape to be good at it. As Arthur Jones pointed out, there's a difference between displaying strength and fitness and developing it. Performing a one rep max on the bench press is a display of your strength but I don't think anyone will argue that doing one rep max is the optimal way to develop muscular size and strength.
-

My art chiro treats the trainers at "supple leopard" Kelly starretts gym for all kinds of injuries and here supposed to be ambassadors for safe cross fit.
So I can only imagine how the average Middle aged weekend warrior trainee with horrific thoracic mobility does with a mass of jerky, badly performed overhead work.

Pellius, if I recall correctly, you are a Mentzerite.
So am I.
I believe we are on exactly the same page.

Oh good lord, that 2nd photo.......
-
I wonder what the next "big thing" is going to be after crossfit and kettlebells ::)
KB's have been around for a hundred years.
-
Pellius, if I recall correctly, you are a Mentzerite.
So am I.
I believe we are on exactly the same page.
Mentzer was my inspiration when I was in my late teens and early twenties. I use to see him all the time in the early 1990s at Gold's and he always remembered my name. He didn't live that far from me as we both live in Redondo Beach. I never saw him out and about but would often see his brother, Ray. I had a feeling Mike didn't go out in public much. You'd see Ray at the mall or at El Polo Loco Chicken. That was one of his, and my, favorite places.
When I was working as a security guard at a condo right after high school. There was a guy name, Hank Grudman, who lived there who just opened up a Nautilus training facility. This was in the late 1970's early 80's. So Nautilus was a novel thing here in Hawaii. We talked a bit about training and he gave me a book by Arthur Jones. It changed my life and how I approached training.
