But good for the young girl for her determination. While some on here want to think this is just a hand full of CF trainers doing stupid shit, it's becoming more and more prominant that these people are cluless. The "Trainer" here admits she didn't know where to start so instead of doing some research she just starts on what CF has taught her.
-
Trainer is really cute though.
-
Trainer's definitely hot. Would bang. But "crossfit idiocy" is pretty redundant - crossfit already means idiocy. ;D
-
jamming yourself full of drugs in order to impress a crowd full of men by standing in a thong while covered in oil = much less idiotic.

Quit already. You're on a bodybuilding board. What did you expect?

Live by the thong, die by the thong.
What you, Magoo?

i certainly wouldn't sign up now. my presence is more out of habit and having been here a long time than anything resembling an interest in the "sport" ( ::) ) of bodybuilding. these days i like to comment on the hilarious irony of calling out crossfit for stupidity when you... well, i already said.
Live by the thong, die by the thong.
What you, Magoo?
believe you me, no one wants to see me in a thong, nor do i want anyone to see me in one. :-X

1) Two threads in 12 days that means by the end of the year you will be close to 31 new threads on CF. I am seriously disappointed. I figured you would be at a higher thread/day ratio
2) While redundant....Wow..anothe r CF thread by little Joe.
3) Please show us where she she should have researched? Enlighten us seeing as we are obviously not as intelligent as you.
4) When was the last time YOU actually gave of your time for someone in a similar position. I doubt you have ever done this. Not even close. I doubt you have ever donated your time to many less fortunate unless you know you it can benefit you monetarily. Oh, and yes..take that with a tone of disrespect. Fully intended.
5) Perhaps you might enjoy some videos of non-CF trainers doing some stupid, clueless, moronic shit?
6) Yes, its a bodybuilding board....not a religious or political board.

When I what? Competed 7 years ago and 18 years prior to that?

Everyday, we have clients with parkinsons.

i wish i could say i'm surprised with how bad you are at inference but, well, i'm not. so i'll explain it slowly.
i find it hilariously ironic that you call out crossfit for its supposed "idiocy" when you are engaged in an... um... activity that is centered around filling yourself with dangerous drugs in order to shave yourself, tan, pose, and flex in front of a crowd of cheering men to win a little trophy. no allusions of health benefits or a competition that requires you be able to perform in any athletic fashion, just showing yourself off like a glistening hunk of meat for the drooling "fans".
then you have the temerity to claim that crossfit, an actual sport still in its infancy which strives to make athletes which are healthy, strong, and agile, is "idiotic".
whether you find their methods proper (and anyone who actually possesses a triple digit IQ realizes that it is evolving and learning), the fact remains that the worst of crossfit cannot hold a candle to the sadness of the slums of bodybuilding.
after all, crossfitters offer private training to supplement their income. bodybuilders offer... "private posing sessions". ;)
-
Cross fit is the most creative way to injure yourself " working out" while accomplishing nothing. A cult of busy idiots is what they are. As for the video I didn't think I would see worse than Genova in terms of people taking advantage of someone who is handicapped but again crossfitters up the game in the wrong way...
-
If some stupid asshole wants to injure him or herself by doing crossfit, fine, that is their choice.
But gee, this girl is disabled. Very dangerous stuff.
-
Everyday, we have clients with parkinsons.
You donate your time huh? No financial gain? None?
Funny you couldn't respond to the question on where she should have researched this. Do you have special certification for coaching/training those clients with Parkinson's?
Magoo is making you look ridiculous again.

Bodybuilding as of now, takes up hardly any part of my life. WTF are you talking about?

As of now....you mean this week. I do recall last year you takes about competing again. Are we to assume you would not use any pharmaceuticals for this endeavor? Please don't come back and try and say what you would have used wouldn't have been illegal. ::)
-
You donate your time huh? No financial gain? None?
No, I have a business. That doesn't mean I won't help them though.
Funny you couldn't respond to the question on where she should have researched this. Do you have special certification for coaching/training those clients with Parkinson's?
Pleeaasssee. I have enough certs and education have no need to add another. I also have 40 years of practial application and enough commonsense to realize I don't over head press someone who can barely stand up.
Magoo is making you look ridiculous again.
Perhaps I'm missing it.

Yes and yes. Whats your point?
-
Enough certifications and common sense. Hmm. Glad that's all you need to deal with a severe neurological condition. Oh, and 40 yrs of practical practice? How old are you again? Because if you are anywhere under 60yo I will laugh my ass off.
You have a business...sure. donate some time Joe fire someone like this. I should have been more clear...ever work with someone who has a mental defect? I am sure in your 40 yrs you have...but I thought I would ask.
You aren't going to use any pharmaceuticals to "compete"...lol. surrrrre

I'm 51, I started training at 11.

Define "Mental defect" and no I don't. If there is something what I feel is beyond me or my trainers scope, I do the right thing and refer them out.
You aren't going to use any pharmaceuticals to "compete"...lol. surrrrre
I meant that I will use.

HA HA HA......you are trying use your 'training' at 11yo towards your years of 'practical experience'???
That's like a surgeon including their high school education as practical experience because they happen to dissect animals during biology class. Can't believe you actually did that.
Still waiting on you to enlighten me on :
3) Please show us where she she should have researched? Enlighten us seeing as we are obviously not as intelligent as you.
You don't have any special certification or background with Parkinson patients...do you? Oh wait...you have been lifting for 40yrs. I forgot that quickly.
Lastly...going to use some anabolics. That makes Magoo's point:
i find it hilariously ironic that you call out crossfit for its supposed "idiocy" when you are engaged in an... um... activity that is centered around filling yourself with dangerous drugs in order to shave yourself, tan, pose, and flex in front of a crowd of cheering men to win a little trophy. no allusions of health benefits or a competition that requires you be able to perform in any athletic fashion, just showing yourself off like a glistening hunk of meat for the drooling "fans".

When it comes to training, of course I do.
That's like a surgeon including their high school education as practical experience because they happen to dissect animals during biology class. Can't believe you actually did that.
Not quite the same thing, son and you know it.
Still waiting on you to enlighten me on :
3) Please show us where she she should have researched? Enlighten us seeing as we are obviously not as intelligent as you.
She could have gone to a number of research sites (PubMed, NEJM, NSCA Journal of S&C, etc, etc) consulted her physician and/or physical therapist as to what surgerys she has had and what route to take as to what she can and cannot do.
You don't have any special certification or background with Parkinson patients...do you? Oh wait...you have been lifting for 40yrs. I forgot that quickly.
No..and? I have enough education (and continue to learn) and speaking with the clients doctor as well as research to understand what needs to be done. We can't stop it, we can't reverse it but we can slow the process.
Lastly...going to use some anabolics. That makes Magoo's point:

It's my choice. In 40 years I haven't had an injury until I turned 40 and that only kept me out for a few days. In my 30 years of using sparse amouts of gear, I have NEVER had a side effect and blood panals always comeback clean
Enough of me, lets talk about you. You're a Chiro and you're defending this trainer as to what she's doing, plain and simple there is no denying it. This is disturbing to think that you're defending the exploitation of this disabled girl and defending the trainer who probably has less than 3 years of experiance and a "Crossfit certification". You also seem to think that education ends when you get your degree when in fact it's just beginning and like me, will continue or at least should be, continuing until the day you either retire or die.
I know for a fact there are Chrio's out there going WAAAYYY beyond their scope when a patient comes in with an ortho issue and tries to resolve it with out referring out just so they don't that $$. Don't get me wrong, I'm pro Chrio, they have their place and we employ one, I also employ an physical therapist. Once every couple of months we have meetings with all of us and our trainers that will last about 3-4 days discussing EACH client. our athletes and their programs.
As some one who should have some knowledge of bio-mechanics you, especially should know that don't do shit like that with come one who can hardly walk because of the lack of a neurological connection especially doing anything overhead with anykind of weight. That video was a sad exploitation of a disabled girl and pathetic display of what this trainer did. She's so naive and I hope one day she realizes it.
There is a reason why we don't have injuries in my gym whether they squat the bar or 500lbs!!

1) never did I say she was right....nor did I say she was wrong. Find a post of mine where I said it.

4) I seem to think that education ends when I get a degree? I have to do more continuing ed than you do. WAY more. Nice try
5) Oh, so you want to throw the Chiro going out of their scope? Please Joe...tell me how YOU know they are going out of their scope. NOT that you were told...but you said you know some that went beyond their scope. Give me an ortho issue that a chiro tried to resolve that they shouldn't.
6) Again with the exploitation. How is she is exploited?
7) Neurological connection? You mean to tell me that the motor nerves normally present to certain muscles aren't there? Or did you mean to say that the motor control centers of the brain were damaged? Before you talk anymore out of your ass on something YOU should do your research on strength training / functional training on people cerebral palsy. I will make it easy....check this out : http://www.pelinks4u.org/articles/bruns4_11.htm While I may not agree with some of the things the affected girl was doing, the other things were not going to have a detrimental effect on her. What, would you have preferred she was in leg braces and a helmet while one of your athletes pushes a sled right by her and then proceeds to use a hammer on a truck tire to show awesome he is?
Who gives a flat flying fuck how much your athletes can squat? You must have the BEST training place ever to NEVER have injuries. Wow...so impressive. Why don't you ever start a positive thread...or make a thread that will benefit someone rather than bashing EVERYTHING that goes against your ideals? Serious answer to that one.

Getbig member just like you....Rather than defending CF blindly like you have been doing and trying to retort by pointing out the fallacies of BB you should focus on educating people like the moron in the video. Everyone here at getbig knows the absurdity that bodybuilding has become, we like the sport but we are not unwilling to point out its flaws, unlike crossfitters who can't seem to be anything other than pretentious when it comes to CF.

How have I been defending it blindly?
Perhaps you should take a step back and RE-READ some things Magoo and I have said about CF. You will see there is criticism from us. Now, in case you want to know...I was a BBer for 25 years. Competed nearly all of them. Last few years as a WNBF pro. Only after being done with BBing did I stray to the dark side. So, I have a tad insight into the bullshit that BBing is.

An athlete that is uninsured.
Coach, do you think the taxpayers will be footing his bills now?
Isn't he a Xfit celebrity?
I feel for the guy, I truly do. But it is just downright irresponsible to not carry some form of insurance.
Honestly, I have no idea and do not know his financial situation.

I'm curious to find out what that snatch event was. Was for reps? was it paired up with something else that would be a high CNS exercise? was it a circuit for AMRAP with no rest?

Yep, no one ever had any sort of spinal injury from gymnastics, hockey, football, rodeo, NASCAR, diving, etc, etc Regardless, you going to talk some shit in light of someone being injured like that??
Why are you curious Joe? What impact does it have on you? You are soooo technical too. "High CNS exercise" ::)
Still waiting on your replies to my statements earlier Joseph. Remember...the responses should come from you..not your well qualified staff. ;)

Oooooo....comparing this to a political debate. ::) For me, debating with you is like debating with an irrational woman (pretty redundant, I know). She will always come back with comments like "what are you talking about"....then make some tangent elsewhere instead of addressing the absolute facts.
Irrelevant = your accusation the girl was being exploited. (which you have yet to demonstrate how she was)
Irrelevant = you bringing up chiro's and the alleged "practicing out of their scope"
Irrelevant = bringing up the continuing education / certification thing (the thing you will be doing till the die you die ::))
Irrelevant = mentioning how much your "trainees" can squat without being injured
Still waiting on you to tell everyone where she should have researched.....
Still waiting on you to fess up that you probably know less than jack shit about training someone with cerebral palsy and therefore are talking out of your ass.
-
Just to be clear. You think it's ok for someone with her condition, who can barely walk or clap above her head to do what's in the video? I don't need to be an expert to figure out that isn't the brightest of ideas. How was she exploited? Seriously?????

Ask Galeniko about his countries healthcare. You may support the Health Insurance Industrial complex and Obamacare which strengthened it, I do not. There are only three good things about Obamacare, it gives the States the freedom to set up their own Single Payer Universal system (which Vermont is doing), Eliminates pre-existing conditions and opens the marketplace to everyone which allows some "rebates" here and there.
Other than that, its pure shit and a Republican wet dream. Its the same plan Bob Dole, Nixon and Mitt Romney advocated. At least you are happy I guess.

lots of people bodybuild without drugs or publicly wearing a thong . CROSSFIT IS COMPLETELY STUPID AND DANGEROUS . I hope this helps

I'm usually a live and let live guy in regards to this stuff, but you've got to watch the programming on these things. This is some mighty ugly programing, with a complex movement after all the other stuff.

Just to be clear...why can't you simply answer anything that that was asked of you? Perhaps its because you can't? Because when challenged you simply can not back your own position up but rather you will deflect the whole thing in another direction. You lack the ability....you lack the knowledge...you basically lack the balls.

There is a reason why we don't have injuries in my gym whether they squat the bar or 500lbs!!
All serious athletes get injured from time to time. Find me a strongman, powerlifter, weightlifter or bodybuilder who never gets injured. WHO do you train exactly?
-
It would be interesting to see video of this.
Another thing that might of helped cause this is bad lay out and platform management, an injury at that low on the back is odd for a lost lift, so I looked and found this bit of scuttlebutt -
"I've watched it about 10x in slow mo and I've come to the conclusion that the weights being behind the platform is the cause. Weights on the side of the platform would have obviously been safer.
The barbell does not appear to hit him at any time on the way down as his back was almost vertical which would have made it almost impossible. He basically sat on his butt as he lost the weight behind him. As his butt makes contact with the ground the barbell clearly hits the stack of blue 45# plates behind his platform and comes right back into his lower back at which point you see him react. " .
That is interesting, and would certainly cause something like this. Very freaky deaky accident.

Excellent post..
We make fun of everything on this board...Bodybuilding getting the lions share of s buse...followed by Shizzo.
But when the lens is put on Crossfit..the same few guys jump up and defend it every time. Relax guys...I have nothing inherently against anything. But when I see something blindingly stupid..whether its some idiotic crossfitter getting ran over by a car....or some fucking moron from Brazil with 5 gallons of synthol in their body...I laugh, make a snide remark and revel in their stupidity a bit.
You guys get so offended. And the "well bodybuilding is stupid too" argument s just silly. We know.
-
1) never did I say she was right....nor did I say she was wrong. Find a post of mine where I said it.
By not saying anything, you're defending the process.
2) How do you know she has less than 3yrs experience? Maybe she has been lifting since she was 11yo....that counts as practical experience...doesnt it?
Of course I'm taking a guess, but she looks no older than 22-23. Now, even she's a little older how much experiance do you think she actually has? She admitted she had no Idea where to start with her.
3) Explain how the girl is being exploited and what does that have to do with me being a chiro?
She's being exploited by having cameras focused on HER during a session with what seems to be spectators, she obviously did a crossfit interview with the trainer basically saying crossfit is for everyone. As for you being a Chrio, you should be objective in your assessment of this instead of defending it. You of all people should know better even if your training experiance doesn't go that far beyond bodybuilding.
4) I seem to think that education ends when I get a degree? I have to do more continuing ed than you do. WAY more. Nice try
I've consistantly put in a minimum of $7-10k year in CEU's. I lost track on how many I have. This isn't just for training, this includes seminars for physical threapy, spine health (I usually go Stuart McGill's).
5) Oh, so you want to throw the Chiro going out of their scope? Please Joe...tell me how YOU know they are going out of their scope. NOT that you were told...but you said you know some that went beyond their scope. Give me an ortho issue that a chiro tried to resolve that they shouldn't.
Usually starts with people that can't afford to go an ortho so they think a Chiro is the next best thing, fighters are a perfect example. Shoulder injuries, knee injuries that they are diagnosing that should be referred out even after the testing.
When you have injuries that occure in the gym then that trainer needs to re-assess that program. No, I haven't had training injuries and on field injuries are dramatically reduced as a result of good programs. Who has the best programs? The one's that have the best on field performance with the least amount of injuries at the end of a season.
-
Just to be clear...why can't you simply answer anything that that was asked of you? Perhaps its because you can't? Because when challenged you simply can not back your own position up but rather you will deflect the whole thing in another direction. You lack the ability....you lack the knowledge...you basically lack the balls.
Your turn.
-
Why do I seldom see senior people performing crossfit?
Oh wait, never mind..
-
All serious athletes get injured from time to time. Find me a strongman, powerlifter, weightlifter or bodybuilder who never gets injured. WHO do you train exactly?
90% of my clientele are high school, college and pro athletes. The rest are general population.
-
My turn?
1) By not saying anything I defended the process? Try again Joe
2) So, utilizing your logic..if she started working out at age 11, she has 11 - 12 years of practical experience. Whats wrong with her stating she didn't know where to start? She is not arrogant and says she knows exactly what to do. I have asked this of you already, but it bears repeating...have YOU ever trained or worked with someone with Cerebral Palsy? Doubt you have.
3) Do you honestly know what being exploited means? Perhaps you should go look the word up and try and re-answer this.
4) You spend $7000 on continuing education every year? Why do I have a hard time believing that. Hmmmm You aren't a physical therapist...so why do you need certifications for physical therapy? You said you employ those people. Shouldn't they be taking those seminars? Oh wait, I see what you are probably doing....you are spending the money so THEY can take those classes. Then you basically use that as "your" experience. Sound about right?
5) You failed to give me an example of out of the scope. You gave a nice dance-around issue. You said you know personally. Should I quote what you originally said?
6) Avoidance...again
7) Avoidance / lack of response....typical. Google-fu that shit Joe.
Why again did you find it necessary to point out how much your athletes squat? What relevance was it to this story?
You seriously can not expect people to believe that injuries ONLY occur in the gym due to poor programming. Really??? Seriously?? On field injuries are reduced due to good programming. Oh wow...impressive. So with good programming, the guy getting hit lateral to medial in the knee would have less of a chance of tearing any soft tissue. Hmm...good to know.
Should I say "your turn" or should I just chalk this up to your lack of a serious ability to directly respond to things. If you do respond, please include some 40yd dash times or maybe some bench numbers. That would be cool.

I love MisterMagoo and Krankenstein, but Crossfit as a whole is garbage. Sure, some elements are okay and decent but overall, cult crap that empowers women for some odd reason.

Don't they flip tires in crossfit?

So many sports/activities are cult-ish. I found bodybuilding to be more cult-ish than CF
Don't they flip tires in crossfit?
Yes.....but also when you are a baseball player training at Joe's gym.

I agree, but the business model for Crossfit specifically is designed for being a group/cult activity. This behavior is highly encouraged whereas bodybuilding can be a lone endeavor and there is no "mandatory" group behavior/group think.
Its a successful business model that parallels religion in many ways and that is precisely why it works.

Everyday, we have clients with parkinsons.
Man... Coach...
I can't believe you want to even open up this can of worms.
These discussions should be on an elite level training board. It's too much for this place. We are talking about health, physiology, pharmacology... even therapy.
It is a serious daily task and is so closely related to the medical field.
Just give everyone their Rhabdo sticker and let them go.
We do what we do, they do what they do. The last thing we need is the stress of an endless argument. Crossfit is always going to be on that fence. It will never "cross" over until the lawsuits become ubiquitous.
We may as well talk about Pitbulls ~

What will last longer in our society. The MMA faze or the Crossfit faze?
-
It's impossible to program for zero injuries, what a bunch of bs.
Seriously, where do you this from? Unless they come in with an existing injury, we have no injuries. If you have injuries in a program it's due to lack of information from the clients history, no testing or assessments or flat out poor programming.
-
Krank: in the article that Joe posted, what was the specific injury the now paralyzed athlete incurred? It was from a clean ??? That's a first For me hearing that happen from a simple clean
-

CrossFit is a dying fad.
-

Snatch from what I've heard. More than likely at the snatch balance.
-
Snatch from what I've heard. More than likely at the snatch balance.
What exactly was the mechanism of injury though? Did he drop the bar or what?
-
Not sure, heard his spine was severed.
-
Not sure, heard his spine was severed.
Hmm.....wonder if the bar slipped out of his hands, somehow he hyperextended at the waist. Gotta be in the lumbar region if it's from the waist down.
I could see this with 1rm Oly lifting but I can't believe in a crossfit workout that the weight was so heavy he couldnt throw the bar away when he missed the lift
-
There is a video of it on the other thread. I was sure hoping Joseph would talk more shit.....I really was. In a nut shell, he was going for a lift, dumped it behind his back (which is the right thing to do) and fell into a seated position. I guess the the bar rebounded off of some plates that were stupidly placed behind the platform and it bounced back onto him.
It really was a freak accident thing. Funny thing...people talk about the whole cult thing with CF (which I really do abhor) but they ARE a tight "community". If the figure is true, and there was over $115K raised so far...thats impressive and kind. How much did people donate for Flex Wheeler? Dennis Newman? Porter Cotrell? DA?? Exactly....
The fact his injury was around T11 (you don't sever your spine, you sever a spinal cord...you fracture a spinal column) has a very minimal chance of walking again (4 - 5%). Possible complete loss of bowel and/or bladder control. I have not read anything more on his injury so I can not say much more...
Que his royal training highness to spout off more at the mouth (still waiting on what YOU have seen personally that a chiro treated and shouldn't have....couldn't provide just ONE example??)
-
Did CrossFit teach you to dump a snatch load at the top from behind? Unless he had no choice you never dump the load from thee rear. There's no way to control the drop.
-

I can't believe this. ???
You train at a high level and there will be injuries, period. Weightlifters with million dollar programs and the best programmers = injuries. Powerlifters = always injured. Since you're a fan of Louie Simmons, maybe you could teach him about proper programming. All those guys are constantly injured, and I bet many are junkies as well due to having to pop pain pills just to be able to get out of bed in the morning. Louie and others will say today's knowledge reduces injury rate but I doubt anyone will claim no injuries.
Football players may tear a pec doing a max rep attempt with 225 on the bench. it can happen with zero warning. Especially if they're on anabolics, and you always say all high level athletes do drugs. How do you program against that?
You have kid doing max attempt on things like squats. How do you program against one of them buckling his knee or whatever, resulting in injury? Form almost ALWAYS suffers, for EVERYONE when doing max attempts.
-

You never dump a snatch to the rear? So, any video I post of an olympic lifter missing the snatch and letting it drop behind them you are going to tell me you are right....and they are wrong?
Van....you should realize by now that Coach is above answering such things as you point out. He IS infallible. He IS the epitome of perfection.

I've been teaching for 4 years. I teach at schools and in my own gym (although I don't use them much in my program we still go through technique EVERYDAY) I've been USAW certified for 5 years.

I didn't say it can't happen, it most certainly can....but it hasn't. Imagine trying to explain to a parent, coach or worse yet a scout or agent that your athlete can't play because of an injury from the program.
"Excuse Mr. Boras, your $10mil player can't play this year because he tore his bicep tendon or rotator cuff because of something he did in the gym".
Yeah, that wouldn't affect business too much ::)

Here is the only vid I could find:
Sad....and what did I say? He more than likely severed his spine at the snatch balance!
-
I'd like to hear what some Olympic level oly-lift (redundancy of peace) coaches think about their lifts used in traditional crossfit programs....
-
Coach, I readily admit that I know next to nothing regarding the Oly lifts.
I always inherently knew that technique in those lifts is of the highest importance, because you are combining high levels of acceleration, thus creating high levels of shearing force, that were contraindicated for my goals.
Now, if you want to compete in Oly lifting, that is a different animal.
I personally don't think they are necessary for sports performance, most coaches do. I don't teach for competitive purposes. Let me ask you, as far as his insurance goes, shouldn't the crossfit event insurance cover him?
-
Trainer would receive a rough and shameful dicking following the feast of the corn.
-
I'd like to hear what some Olympic level oly-lift (redundancy of peace) coaches think about their lifts used in traditional crossfit programs....
The high level crossfitters that I have seen have very good technique with the lift by itself.
-

"Dicking" LMAO

Can you go into more detail about what you think happened exactly?
-
I'd like to hear what some Olympic level oly-lift (redundancy of peace) coaches think about their lifts used in traditional crossfit programs....
They don't mind it at all if it's programed smartly by established coaches working with Crossfit. Not the quick cert coaches that started being turned out a few years ago.
Honestly, they hesitantly love it because it brought cheap equipment and money into the sport, it also offers a talent pool that might actually migrate into real Olympic lifting.
-
The high level crossfitters that I have seen have very good technique with the lift by itself.
I mean how do they feel about oly lifts thrown into a rigorous CF workout....do they have objections?
-
Can you go into more detail about what you think happened exactly?
So it was the injury that made him drop the bar? That would be even more interesting.
I know this is a horrible situation, but I think it is useful to know what can go wrong, and this could be a good learning opportunity.
I don't know, didn't look like he had a lot weight on the bar. I don't know how much recovery he had between events, I don't know if he had felt something before and decided to just work through it but what I did see is that O-lift event was eighth in the events. Perhaps he failed in technique because of fatigue from the pervious events. I've always power is first in any program....power in this situation was eighth.
-
How can they be necessary for sports performance.
Studies have shown that the best way to become good at jumping higher is....guess what??....practice jumping!
I am just as, if not more explosive now than I was in my hardcore tennis playing days because of weight training. I carry much more weight (30+ pounds) but am just as quick. A stronger athlete is a better athlete. Period. End of story.
I have read that the fracture occurred in the thoracic region of his spine. That is a VERY hard area of the spine to damage. Mostly occurs when workers fall off of ladders, scaffolding, etc.
The highlighted answered your own question. When I teach speed for example, I always say speed starts in the weight room and technique is on the field, you can't run faster (specifically first step or 10, 20 yards) without weight training.
-
Sad....and what did I say? He more than likely severed his spine at the snatch balance!
The event list was posted and it wasn't a snatch balance. So it WASN'T what you said....

With proper programming this would have never happened. ::)

it makes me laugh that when a crossfitter breaks his back in a freak accident, it's proof that crossfit is bad. but when kobe bryant tears his achilles and then his knee it doesn't mean that basketball is dangerous.
coach, what about the hundreds and hundreds of kids who get hurt playing school sports? friends of mine broke wrists wrestling, tore ACL/MCLs in football, i actually know a kid who got seven concussions his senior year. does that mean high school sports are bad?
-

The snatch balance is part of the lift Krank. The last frame in this progression is called the SNATCH BALANCE!

I get a little puzzled when people compare crossfit other sports when it comes to injuries. Yes, you can have injuries in any sport and truthfully it's expected. I don't know hardly of any athlete that doesn't have some sort of injury. It's apart of the game. But you shouldn't expect injuries from a "fitness' program.

Start with a barbell racked across the back of the shoulders as it would be for a back squat with hands in a Snatch grip. Start with your feet in the pulling position. Dip and drive at the knees to unload the bar momentarily, and transition the feet to the receiving position while driving yourself into the bottom of an overhead squat.

Football
Football-related head injuries, in particular concussions, are more common than neck fractures, but it is not infrequent for a player to incur both a head and neck injury during an incident. Of the estimated 2,692 sports-related neck fractures treated at U.S. hospital emergency rooms in 2009, 268 were related to football.
Neck injuries are usually associated with high-velocity collisions between players, causing acceleration or deceleration of the head on the neck. Acceleration often causes a whiplash type of extension force on the neck, while deceleration often results in flexion forces. Spearing, which has been banned in American football since 1976, happens when a player uses the helmet/head as the first point of contact with another player. Spearing is a significant cause of cervical spine injuries and quadriplegia.
Cervical-spine injuries are estimated to occur in 10-15 percent of all football players, most commonly in linemen and defensive players.
Both past and present data show that the football helmet does not cause cervical spine injuries; rather it is poorly executed tackling and blocking techniques that are the major problem.
During the past 33 years, there have been a total of 307 football players with incomplete neurological recovery related to cervical SCI: 253 high school players; 34 college players; 14 professionals; and six sandlot players. Data indicate a reduction in the number of cervical cord injuries with incomplete neurological recovery when compared to data published in the early 1970s.
During the 33-year period from 1977-2009, 216 of the 307 players with cervical SCIs were playing defense.
During the 2009 football season there were a total of nine cervical spinal cord injuries with incomplete neurological recovery. This is a decrease from the 14 cervical spinal cord injuries with incomplete neurological recovery in 2008. Seven of the injuries occurred at the high school level, one at the college level, and one at the professional level.
A majority of catastrophic SCIs occur in games. During the 2009 season, five injuries took place in games, two in practice, and two in scrimmage games.
Nearly 10 percent of catastrophic cervical SCIs took place while being tackled.
A high school junior football player was injured while making a tackle. He was a defensive back and injured his cervical vertebra. He underwent surgery and his recovery was incomplete.
A 16-year-old high school football player was injured in a JV scrimmage. He was a defensive back making a tackle with his head up. He underwent a 7-hour surgery fusing C-5 and C-6. His recovery was incomplete.
An 18-year-old high school football player fractured his neck at C-4 during a scrimmage game when his head hit a runner while he was being blocked. He underwent urgery and is still experiencing fine motor skill problems.
A high school senior was injured in a game while making a tackle with his head down from his defensive back position. He was injured in the second quarter, but played the remainder of the game. He fractured his neck at C-5 and wore a neck brace for eight weeks. He has made a full recovery.
A college football player fractured his neck at C-5 after a headfirst hit with a teammate while making a tackle. He wore a neck brace for three months and made a full recovery.
A semi-pro World Football League player was paralyzed in a game while making a tackle on kick-off coverage. He fractured his neck at C-6, underwent surgery, and his recovery was incomplete.

Oh, wait....you have 40+ years of practical experience....you should have know the above. Pompous fuck....can't even admit when you are wrong. At NO POINT did the guy pictured have the bar racked on his shoulders....geezus this is getting old with you. Just like a woman...will argue a point even when she is wrong.
How do can honestly sit there and get puzzled when people (ha ha...you mean anti-cf people like you) compare crossfit to other sports. Are you aware Joey that CHEERLEADING is the #1 'sport' for head trauma. Ranked ABOVE football. How about just your basic cervical spinal column injuries:
Top 15 Sports Contributing to SCI
Diving: 1,563 males, 135 females = 1,698
Bicycling: 312 males, 35 females = 347
All Terrain-Vehicle/All Terrain-Cycle (ATV/ATC): 133 males, 20 females = 153
Football: 136 males = 136
Snow Skiing: 118 males, 14 females = 132
Horseback Riding: 61 males, 64 females = 125
Winter Sports: 98 males, 26 females = 124
Other Sports: 85 males, 18 females = 103
Surfing (including body surfing): 101 males, 2 females = 103
Wrestling: 82 males, 2 females = 84
Trampoline: 53 males, 8 females = 61
Gymnastics: 31 males, 18 females = 49
Snowmobiles: 37 males, 5 females = 42
Field Sports: 37 males, 1 female = 38
Hang Gliding: 31 males, 2 females = 33
(hmmm...where is CF on that list)
How about this one Joe??

Love this! So true!

Krank, he's confirming what I had been saying. He demonstrated the SNATCH BALANCE.
Your desperation with the attempt to prove yourself is comical. I guess the USAW is wrong. LOL. You're confusing a snatch grip with a snatch balance.

You seriously aren't this retarded....are you?
You claim was that the last frame of that lifting doing a FULL/SQUAT SNATCH demonstrated a snatch balance.
The Snatch balance starts with bar on the shoulder (please be so kind as to review the sentence I placed in bold if you have a hard time grasping the concept). As far as what is from the USAW...what does that show? Snatch and SNATCH RELATED. Thats the best you can do? Find me ONE olympic coach that says that dipping under the bar and standing up is a snatch balance while doing a full snatch. That's as retarded as saying when you are standing up from a squat you are demonstrating a leg extension. ::) This is becoming painful Joe....
The only comical is you actually making the statements you have so far....."40+ years practical experience" at age 51. Thats my new sig.....

Jesus Christ, I give up trying to get through to you. Go ahead and keep making an ass of yourself with out me.

Olympic lifting is worthless.
-
it is the only true measure of strength
the title of "world strongest man" is property of the IWF
I don`t think it is at all.
The only way to truly measure strength would be to have a machine that forces a muscle to contract until it snaps and the machine measures the force.
-
picking a weight off the floor getting it over the head is the BEST test of overall strength
common sense really
Not really. Someone can have larger and stronger muscles, but not be able to do what a smaller, less muscled person with different tendon and ligament attachments. There is just too many variables that are involved. If we are measuring pure muscle strength, then my muscle machine ripping machine is the true test of which muscle is stronger.
Lifting a weight overhead only proves that you can lift a weight over your head and nothing else.

Trying to get through to me? You are asked a direct question and you avoid it. Then asked again and you give some vague answer. You have been proven wrong over and over. The only person who looks like an ass is you.
Next thing out of your mouth would probably be something like "I blame Obama for Crossfit". So, yes...its probably best to shut the fuck up right now.

I would like to snatch some blue stars balanced beneath my name.
along with the rest of the dumbfuckery in this thread.
-
this is not open to discussion, it's a universal truth
you may choose to live in your own world i dont care
Was Mike Mentzer reincarnated?
-
Coach knows what he is talking about, crossfit is for lame ass fuckers that don't lift hardcore.
Most of them do not lift yes

Live by the thong, die by the thong.

I'm still laughing while typing this. Good one.

"CrossFit users have something called “Uncle Rhabdo,” a cartoon figure representing rhabdomyolysis - the breaking down of muscle tissue to the point where it begins to poison your kidneys. CrossFitters use Uncle Rhabdo to remind people that there's a limit to going hard. Rhabdomyolysis is no joke - it is a condition that can lead to kidney failure and death. It requires immediate medical attention."

But good for the young girl for her determination. While some on here want to think this is just a hand full of CF trainers doing stupid shit, it's becoming more and more prominant that these people are cluless. The "Trainer" here admits she didn't know where to start so instead of doing some research she just starts on what CF has taught her.
would hit.
both :-* :-*

hold on.
cross fir, yes, some stuff looks dangerous, but atleast these ppl train.
dont worry they regard bbuilders just as weird.
its their preference, its kinda a sport, its ok.
i dont think its an effective way to build a worthwhile physique, but can be ok as cardio if done safely
