Can't believe that out of all people Arnold would say something like " people see the big muscles, but there's not talent behind it "
To me, that comment along, kills the whole purpose of selling bodybuilding as something remotely respectable to mainstream media/audiences.

I agree with arnold a lot of the pro bodybuilders today have the personality of a door knob.
-
BB in the modern day had lost something special that it once had
part of it is the art as Arnold put it.... People aren't working on their weak points? They're not trying to sculpt an imagr,.they're just slamming gear and pushing weight with no thought or regard for the finished product.. just size size size. So in a way, he's right. They've lost that aspect that takes good eyes, they've also lost a certain amount of intensity and focus on training... its naturally all shifted to drugs. So a lot of the talent that it took to sculpt your physique into something that fits an ideal is gone. They just try to pack on size.
-
Its turning back to how it used to be in the 60is. People thought of BBers as freaks an idiots. Today It does have more muscle and less talent then in the 70-80s! Arnold and the gang started a whole Fitness frenzy that became a Billions dollar business.! Its just not looking good right now. He is right

Kai greene walking around new york in panties and a white mask posing in public doesnt help the cause

I agree too, however that's not the point, there's a lot of dumb athletes in other sports as well and using steroids too but (unlike bodybuilders) they actually need some sort of talent to perform on the field...
people see the Mr.Olympia contest (super bowl of Bodybuilding) and all they can think/say is " the one that uses more drugs will win" based on Arnold comment since they don't need talent whatsoever.
I wish the producers of Generation iron didn't leave that comment on the film, just because is Arnold you cant just publish everything he says.... it does not help the image of the "sport' at all.

Today's bodybuilders just have ugly bodies and the drugs make up 99% of their success. Their posing sucks and there is no flow, rhythm, or artistic value. Not to mention the void of personality. When lately have you heard of someone wanting to look like the top bodybuilders? (Besides the mentally disturbed. Anabolichalo, Etc.) The amount of drugs pushed into their bodies these days is grotesque and unnecessary, is it really worth it to die at 50? I'd rather look like Steve Reeves all my life, have the body women love and live healthy.

Arnold has been holding a lot of anger inside. He is just now starting to really let it out... that is, in regards to Professional Bodybuilding.
He doesn't like the distended guts. As a matter of fact, I think it pisses him off more than the competitors know.
Arnold also thinks everyone looks basically the same. Back in "the day" the silhouette of a Pro bodybuilder was unmistakeable.
Arnold thinks the general work-ethic has taken a dump... which it has for the most part.
Arnold also see's these young guys dying far too soon when most of his competitive buddies are still alive.
He knows that Pumping Iron and a few other calculated moves that he made really brought bodybuilding and fitness to the General Population, the "masses" ~ and he feels a little bit of guilt for not controlling the "sport' more than he has. He started it (pretty much) but has let it get off-track.
Did I talk to Arnold? No. Can I read his mind? No, but I know someone who can ~ ;D

While true what you say. ARNOLD runs the biggest muscle show on the planet. He has the power to change and set the standard back to a more pleasing aesthetic and artistic format. The new pros today are nothing more than ugly fake tanned blobs who are not going to see 50 years of age and if they do they will be so broken down they will not be able to enjoy life. ARNOLD can change this if he wants to. All you have to do is hire the judges that Wil stick his the criteria in judging standards needed to affect change. The current pros will bellyache about it and cry like babies but really most are just short little men with Napoleon syndrome anyway. Let's weed these chunky little manlets out of the arena and get bodybuilding back to the likes of Serge Nubret, Frank Zane, Franco Columbo, Lee Haney etc etc. It can be done it's up to the powers that be.

But then again look like Steve Reeves and you won't make it big in the sport not having big sponsors like BSN,BPi,VPX,ON,MuscleTech,Betancourt,Gaspari Nutrition, etc.Guest poses,Seminars,Magazine covers, awesome boots at major BB events etc ...
And eventually you will fade in to Anonymity.

He's not the IFBB. He can only do so much. Arnold has stated many times that he's disgusted with BB today.
They're going to promote whatever makes them the most money. Schmoes want to see muscle. Hell I'm sure a lot of the judges are schmoes. If Arnold personally started meddling around, he could get in trouble. Especially if the whole of the IFBB wants something else.
-

Yes, but do you think the Arnold Classic would survive if he let some 200lbs physique twink take the first place? ???
He's got to please the CEO's of the big supplement companies, and all of them are schmoes.

Counter productive to promoting Bodybuilding like Arnold Classic, especially since it is all over the world now.

Well, there really aren't any pros that fit your hypothetical, but I can see him endorsing guys like Dex and Wolf, who've both lost to either Branch or Kai. They've both won, too, but it hasn't been as consistent as one might expect, considering Arnold's opinions.

Arnold starting to believe his own hype. What was his talent apart from body building? he couldn't act for sh1t, and I very much doubt he was any great shakes as a politician(?) he was just in the right place at the right time and things snowballed.
It's like the manufactured pop bands that hit it big like one direction or the spice girls, they have no more talent than the thousands of other generic pop groups that amount to nothing , they just happen to capture the public's imagination at that moment. It's not because they have any great talent.

At least there's less talent behind it. How many big guys have the same will power/work ethic as Arnold? The current generation is more concerned about the 'right' dosages than the mental part.
-
Yea let's be honest arnold only has so much clout or there'd be no guts at his show. You could see when branch won a couple of times he favoured wolf.
He didn't have the clout many believe as governor either, more a glorified messenger.

arnold is just a bitter old hater
pumping iron was over rated by far
as dennis james said, it was basically just a bunch of guys working out and cracking jokes

Exactly, Don't forget that Arnold was mr.O at age 23, Ronnie at 34 ! Plus Arnold followed Sergio Olivas path with a smaller waist than his. In an era When small waist was VERY IMPORTANT.
Ronnie was the champ after Dorian Yates. So go figure.
Back at topic at hand, Arnold is being a hater. He just don't want to give credit to any of today's champs. Fearing he can create a bigger image than his in this sport.
Champs from the 60's were a lot smaller than Arnold. None of them starting to bash Arnold for being a mass monster ( he was for his era) legends like Reg Park, Reeves were a class act for the new Austrian champ 250 Arnold.
Today, Arnold can't do the same.
Supplements industry just want to push their products.
And Joe Weider is gone so no one will focus on building interesting characters in the bb arena.

All true. He also benefited from his marriage to the Kennedy family. That shouldn't be underestimated. A guy who liked to cheat and fuck around as much as Arnold wouldn't have stayed married to his wife for so long without a very good reason.
If it wasn't for the Shrivers' connections to Hollywood, Arnie would be selling protein-enhanced cookies from a cupboard-sized supplement store on Sunset blvd.

B...b...but beddybelding is so hard, those guys on the stage are all warriors. ::)
-
They dont see the talent behind it.
Some of here actually have used our bodies for more than just the gym. He based the movie because it was a pretty bad example. The top guy was a prima donna who rivals Mariah Carey when it comes to behaving like a diva. It made it look ridiculous. At least Pumping Iron they were having fun. One guy literally goes "they are all idiots so I'm gonna outscience everyone". Yeah....ok big guy :)
No wonder it made little money...

It was a joke because he had made money off his catalog mail-order business and the few properties he owned. But don't misunderstand it. There is no freaking way a guy of his limited resources could've become a near-billionaire and world-famous megastar without the film connection. Even in 1985 when he was promoting Commando, he wasn't well known outside North America. Terminator II did that.
Arnold's good at making people like/trust him. He's always been shrewd. Consider there were better BBers in central Europe in the late 1960s, yet Joe Weider chose him for a residency visa which started his entire career. If he'd stayed in Austria, he'd be a welder today. So he's good at insinuating himself with anyone who can help him get ahead. That's worth five college degrees.
Even bodybuilding was just a tool to get his name out there and stand out among the crowd. Which in the 70s wasn't hard because BB was pretty much concentrated on the southern California scene and no one looked as freaky as he did. But once he found a new source of income, he dropped the sport. That's what sets him apart from all the other guys who pursue it as a "career." They don't know how to parlay it into anything else. It's an end in itself.
-
If the movie was about Arnold instead of the likes of Phil and the "new gang" , I seriously doubt he would've have made such comments.
"Ego music, its all about me "

Ronnie had a tiny waist in 1998 and 1999. He went to improve from there. Arnold improved a little but didn't have the competition Ronnie did and didn't need to do much.

the problem is arnold doesn't care enough to make changes, he does his show every year and then he moves on to more glamorous activities

I remember watching a video with Arnold on you tube ...I can't remember the one but he drives around Venice Beach and shows all the hot spots and the wall him and Franco built when
they worked construction. ...then he called Franco lazy cause he
didn't want to train twice a day so he got a new partner ...haha

Making changes in the sport would mean passing the torch on to a new bodybuilder. And making said bodybuilder the new face, somewhat marketable ....
The " Arnold's sports festival " has a big picture of Arnold in it then his name......
Wooosshhhhhh. Barracuda mode
-
But he's even more involved in bodybuilding now than before with 3 Arnold classics per year, we now have the Europe and Aussie version launches in March.
If it was all down to Arnold you know there'd be no guts and synthol etc on stage but he's not the Be all and end all and the ifbb Ultimately need to usher in the change in judging criteria.

I remember reading on Flex Mag sometime in the mid 90's at the Arnold Classic where Arnold was on stage and as he was speaking, he acknowledge Dorian was in the Crowd and he said to the Crowd: we have 6 time Mr Olympia here"....he didn't address Dorian by name....Dorian didn't like this of course.... ;D......I'm sure it was Arnold way of saying I'm still the best, you British Punk
-
"Even in 1985 when he was promoting Commando, he wasn't well known outside North America. Terminator II did that."
Here in Europe and during the 70', Arnold was known only in bodybuilding gym. I recall seeing him on TV after his 75' Olympia victory. But that's all.
"Conan the Barbarian" (1982) showed him outside the gym.
With "Terminator" (1984), he exploded. TV, Avoriaz festival, press articles, interviews, etc. Arnold was a star.
I always thought Arnold wasn't a good actor. Charlton Heston, Clint Eastwood are talented actors. Not Arnold. This is why I think "Conan" and "Terminator" are his best films : almost any words
After 1985, his body suffered a lot and he couldn't compensate with other qualities.

To promote funding to make Pumping Iron, George Butler had Arnold, Zane, Waller, etc pose on these Greek style pillars in the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Things have changed and not for the better.
The classy way of g4p without white towels

I finally watched the movie today. There was some cringe-worthy stuff in there but the movie was better than I expected. It's no Pumping Iron but it was interesting. They still looked like lumpy bags of shit, bit it was interesting.

We can argue about whether Arnold was correct but I found it odd that he would say that, and also odd that they would put it in the movie. The film makers kind of made a fool out of Wolf with how they juxtaposed that quote and Wolf's casting read. It mirrored Pumping Iron in a way with how they painted Mike Katz a little but I still didn't think it belonged in the movie.

Good point about Wolf, this documentary Fueled the "I lift things up, and put them down" stigma about meat heads and with poor Dennis they went full force....
Also the dude saying that if you tell an Athlete that he will win a world tittle but die in 5 years most athletes would go for it "
I was like WTF were the film maker thinking ? no wonder people have no respect or admiration for Bodybuilders.
