Fat bar holds for time.
CoC type grippers.
Heavy forearm work.
Dead hangs on chin up bar for time.
Hex dumbell holds.
Plate Holds.
Sledge hammer levering.
Jedd Johnson is a really good source of grip stuff. I am subscribed to his email newsletter for all things grip...Pretty good stuff.

Farmers walk.
-
don't have much experience with grip stuff, but with fighters, i'll have them place 10lb plates (with more weight hooked on to it) between their fingers and have them do 'farmers walks' while squeezing the plates. or do farmers walks while pinching the smooth sides of two plates together with their thumb and 1-2 fingers... this is mostly for the muscles in the hands though.
there's strongman and grip strength specific forums for this stuff.
I think goheavy.com used to have a grip forum.. been probably 10yrs since I was there though. dunno if it's still up.
I'm sur you can also find stuff on youtube... guys doing pinch grip pullups on 2x4's in ceiling rafters and whatnot.
-
I worked up to the CoC number 3 when I was younger, think they're somewhere in my parents' garage but that won't tear a phone book. That and rolling frying pans is 70% technique.
-
I think grip strength is very genetic, hard to train for.
I'm very strong at "holding" a ton of weight, but that's only because I don't have short fingers. Being strong at crunching grippers for example = has to do with how your hands are built.
-
One I picked up from Judo Champ Neil Adams is to simply open your hands wide then close them.
Sounds easy until you try to do 100.

Groping sweet 18yo in Brussels clubs ;)

Heavy deadlifts with no straps or gloves.

been using Globe Gripz. Hands are stronger than fuck, even jerking off feels different.

Chin ups with towel

hard, manual graft
-
Tearing a phone book is a trick anyway......there`s a way that most anyone could do it.
Pinch grip plates, farmers walks and get one of these is you can....plate loaded grip machine....great apparatus.

Dang, that works pretty good and it is challenging.

I never understood why you need to 'walk' to increase grip strength.
Just hold heavy DB's for as long as possible and stand there... same thing.

go on......

This company sells a lot of equipment to make your grip stronger. http://www.ironmind.com/
-
To add to a previous post, hand size is relevant. I was in Dublin zoo once and they had a thing to compare your hand size to primates, my hand was slightly larger than a gorilla's. Big hands = better grip and more leverage.

Use these and thank me later

How do you develop super strong grip? Like being able to tear the phonebook type of grip? Serious.
Try some towel pull ups. I used to regularly do sets of 5-15 reps for a total of 100 reps daily (earlier on you might possibly do more than 15 reps, but as you get to the higher numbers, your grip goes).
Try buying Captains of Crush grippers. I started with a #1 years ago. Then, I advanced to doing 20-30 reps with the #1 and jumped to the #2. Once you are able to do about 20 reps with the #2, proceed to the #3. From the #3 on, it becomes logarithmically difficult to bang out double digit reps.
You can also try regular & reverse wrist curls while standing and using exercise bands with heavy resistance. I like the bands over the barbells, because it gives your wrist better range of motion and you can just manipulate angles a little better.
Now, none of these on their own or even in combination of each other will guarantee your ability to tear through a phone book. To be quite honest, I don't think I've ever met anyone capable of such a feat. Nonetheless, those exercises will give you a very strong grip.

As you walk, the dumbbells are going to move around with each step which makes them harder to hold.
-
some here recommend not to overtrain the grip, dont grip anything for 5 days striaght then go all out for one day then you will maximize gaynes this way

That`s expensive.......you can get them much cheaper.
Check out these prices.....they used to be a local company back home in Holyoke Ma. but they`ve moved....stuff lasts a lifetime.
We had two of those grip machines in two gyms I trained at made by this company.....good strong stuff, and doesn`t cost an arm and a leg.

The phone book and deck of cards are an old time strongman trick. The key is to leave a little space between the pages when you tear it. Anybody can do it.

X2 I've never seen anyone into grip more than that guy and his videos are usually pretty interesting.
I usually just mess around with the COC's and the rolling thunder I got laying in the garage.
I don't know how much reverse curls actually help grip but this do seem to help with forearm development.
ive heard using a shovel to dig a hole does work the grip
I can remember a friend of the family growing up. Literally about 130 pounds at most and around 6 feet. Like "Michael Jackson right before death" skinny. Real funny looking guy too. Had a mullet, missing a few teeth and ran around town in an old rusty pickup wearing old cut off jean shorts (no homo, all redneck)
He worked glass his whole life and just spent all day working a caulk gun and that little fucker had a grip that could bring alot of men down to their knees yelling "mercy" the whole way.
-

Shit........that's brilliant. I could've done that.
Did you use them?

everyone all of a sudden obtaining amazing grip strenth from this thread just great all around advices this should be a fee only thread for members

Make sure to chalk up when doing your heaviest grip work. Frequently you "slip" long before you actually lose your gripping strength. We do grip specific work at the end of arm days. It works.
-
If you want a stronger grip, pull shit. Pull everything, in every direction.

I should really buy some of those
I've got terrible grip strength, slipping everywhere :'(
Can you use them for all db exercises or should you start with using it on one exercise?

Can't straps be used instead of chalk?

So many answers. Thank you all.

Jack off 4-5 times a day grip will come around.

Negative sir negative.

Hang with one hand from a chinning bar.....
forever...
Then, get a bucket of sand.... make two fists... and grind your way to the bottom....
Then, get a wrist roller and do five full sets up and down with a 5lb. plate....
Then grab the clips off of an Olympic bar and squeeze the clips together... do reps of 100 counts
Good luck.
-
dont use straps with deadlifts, and when working up in weight stay with double overhand grip for as many of the warmup sets as you can before switching to the mixed grip.
also on the final set with a double overhand grip at the top of the final rep hold the weight as long as you can.
for me this has been the far most effective way of training the grip
-

You can wrap them around any bb/db/machine with a straight grip. You will prob experience soreness and a pump after 1-2 sets, so I would suggest that you go by feel. Technically you can perform any exercise, but some exercises are almost impossible with serious weights, like db/bb rows, deadlifts, chins and upright rows. I use them as much as possible, my last/heaviest sets excluded.
Since you're a woman, keep in mind that these grips are pretty thick. For an indication, grab the end of an olympic bar. Hope this helps :)
-
I don't do any specific grip training. Plenty of deads and chins have helped me develop respectable strength in my forearms, hands and fingers though.
-
I've always found that thick bar work and weighted holds(hangs, heavy pulls, plate pinch grips, etc....) had the most transfer to actual work for me. Grippers tend to transfer over to just being better at grippers for the most part. I did find that something like an isometric hold and a slow release worked better than reps, and to take it slow as overtraining with them really sneaks up on you.
What was mentioned about genetics playing a role really shows up on grippers too, the ability to handle the spread on the larger models is key.
I think they really got popular simply because they are a small, easily carryable means to show strength quickly.

To stop guys who try to be dicks when shaking your hand, by trying to squeeze your fingers, extend your index finger, and shake hands with your hand shaped like a gun.
This changes the angle of your hand and forces the other guy to grab higher up by your palm, extending his fingers more and putting him in a bad leverage position.
If you do this, even a guy with a bear grip won't be able to crush your hand.

We all gotta start somewhere right?
Ironically enough I've talked with a few old people who used to do that way back in the day.
They always say the same thing, "Grab the chicken by the neck, swing it and the neck will snap on the second time around."

Yeah, I've used them before, they are thick. I also have smaller than average hands so who knows if it's hands or grip strength ...either way, it'd be good to improve grip strength. It really gets in the way with bb rows. I noticed my forearms were dying while the rest of me was fine.

Price you gotta pay for disturbing a man who is in the middle of repping out 660 pounds on bench or executing a multi million dollar 2,245% return stock trade.

I recall an old boxing movie from the 1930s or 40s where The Champ said squeezing on a tennis ball every day will turn your punches into TNT.

Great for foot massage, as well.
Just put one on the floor and roll your foot back and forth over it.
Very underrated piece of equipment.

I was at a party and, as happens, got asked to arms wrassle someone (seen as I was the big guy). Nailed guy 1. Nailed guy 2. Guy 3 was wheeled out. Soon as he put some weird grip on my hand I felt something was up. After a struggle he nailed me.... it was a set up >:( >:( >:( Got him back though when a girl asked to see non-functional muscles.

Grip is one thing
Forearm size is another
Much like Calves, genetics do seem to play a larger part in that if you don't have them (forearms or calves) you pretty much never will
Doesn't mean you can't grip
Nor does it mean you can't do insane poundages on Calf Raises
-
Bodyweight grip exercise:
Overhand Clasp of hands in front of you, and pull with one hand, while doing "pull" reps with fingers of the hand that is under the clasped hand, doing for sets of 30. Then do the other hand.
Put both hands together interlocking, with thumbs facing the face, then grip, you will notice your forearms tensing. Do sets of 30.
-
Like what was mentioned, genetics and hand size play a big part, but even the most feeble of bbers can develop impressive strength in just a couple months. I trained it for years using unconventional methods then stopped when I started developing arthritis and overgrown dorsal interossei. Phonebooks tearing is meant for parties, great if you're in the 1200+ page range , gets a laugh out of broads and sometimes gets their pants off too, especially if their black.
-
How often should I do those exercises? Can you train grip everyday?
-

Negative. Train grip 2x weekly in my opinion. You can absolutely over train your forearm flexors.

Mike Dayton, an 1980's & early 1990's strong man had a legendary grip. I trained with Mike many many times. He could tear phone books, license plates, decks of cards, he could roll up frying pans and the most crazy thing he did IMO was bend coins. He taught me everything EXCEPT coin bending- I could never do it.
Google him and read some of his stuff. Crazy grip strength. Bottom pic is Mike breaking handcuffs. Very painful. His wrist are scared badly to this day.

Sage advice right there from the Wishbone.
One thing no-one seems to have mentioned is the need to train the extensors as well as the flexors. Heavy duty rubber bands is probably the best for this. Add more bands as you progress to increase resistance.
For grip I always found a mix of never using straps, dead hangs, plate pinches, wrist roller, CoC's and squash balls did the job well. Also used to hold a barbell behind my back in a standing position and roll it up and down in my fingers, you can continue the movement into a behind the back wrist curl too.
