How do you develop super strong grip? Like being able to tear the phonebook type of grip? Serious.

Try some towel pull ups. I used to regularly do sets of 5-15 reps for a total of 100 reps daily (earlier on you might possibly do more than 15 reps, but as you get to the higher numbers, your grip goes).

Try buying Captains of Crush grippers. I started with a #1 years ago. Then, I advanced to doing 20-30 reps with the #1 and jumped to the #2. Once you are able to do about 20 reps with the #2, proceed to the #3. From the #3 on, it becomes logarithmically difficult to bang out double digit reps.

You can also try regular & reverse wrist curls while standing and using exercise bands with heavy resistance. I like the bands over the barbells, because it gives your wrist better range of motion and you can just manipulate angles a little better.

Now, none of these on their own or even in combination of each other will guarantee your ability to tear through a phone book. To be quite honest, I don't think I've ever met anyone capable of such a feat. Nonetheless, those exercises will give you a very strong grip.

I never understood why you need to 'walk' to increase grip strength.

Just hold heavy DB's for as long as possible and stand there... same thing.

As you walk, the dumbbells are going to move around with each step which makes them harder to hold.

From the people who brought you Captains of Crush
http://www.ironmind.com/

Odd how I found this on Lee Apperson's site. For $259.95
http://www.ironmind-store.com/mobile/Go-Really-Grip153-Machine/productinfo/1242/

DAMN!!!

That`s expensive.......you can get them much cheaper.

Check out these prices.....they used to be a local company back home in Holyoke Ma. but they`ve moved....stuff lasts a lifetime.

We had two of those grip machines in two gyms I trained at made by this company.....good strong stuff, and doesn`t cost an arm and a leg.

The phone book and deck of cards are an old time strongman trick. The key is to leave a little space between the pages when you tear it. Anybody can do it.

Fat bar holds for time.

CoC type grippers.

Heavy forearm work.

Dead hangs on chin up bar for time.

Hex dumbell holds.

Plate Holds.

Sledge hammer levering.

Jedd Johnson is a really good source of grip stuff. I am subscribed to his email newsletter for all things grip...Pretty good stuff.

X2 I've never seen anyone into grip more than that guy and his videos are usually pretty interesting.

I usually just mess around with the COC's and the rolling thunder I got laying in the garage.

I don't know how much reverse curls actually help grip but this do seem to help with forearm development.

ive heard using a shovel to dig a hole does work the grip

I can remember a friend of the family growing up. Literally about 130 pounds at most and around 6 feet. Like "Michael Jackson right before death" skinny. Real funny looking guy too. Had a mullet, missing a few teeth and ran around town in an old rusty pickup wearing old cut off jean shorts (no homo, all redneck)

He worked glass his whole life and just spent all day working a caulk gun and that little fucker had a grip that could bring alot of men down to their knees yelling "mercy" the whole way.

Make sure to chalk up when doing your heaviest grip work.  Frequently you "slip" long before you actually lose your gripping strength. We do grip specific work at the end of arm days. It works.

I should really buy some of those

I've got terrible grip strength, slipping everywhere  :'(

Can you use them for all db exercises or should you start with using it on one exercise?

Can't straps be used instead of chalk?

Hang with one hand from a chinning bar.....

forever...

Then, get a bucket of sand.... make two fists... and grind your way to the bottom....

Then, get a wrist roller and do five full sets up and down with a 5lb. plate....

Then grab the clips off of an Olympic bar and squeeze the clips together... do reps of 100 counts

Good luck.

dont use straps with deadlifts, and when working up in weight stay with double overhand grip for as many of the warmup sets as you can before switching to the mixed grip.

also on the final set with a double overhand grip at the top of the final rep hold the weight as long as you can.

for me this has been the far most effective way of training the grip

You can wrap them around any bb/db/machine with a straight grip. You will prob experience soreness and a pump after 1-2 sets, so I would suggest that you go by feel. Technically you can perform any exercise, but some exercises are almost impossible with serious weights, like db/bb rows, deadlifts, chins and upright rows. I use them as much as possible, my last/heaviest sets excluded.
Since you're a woman, keep in mind that these grips are pretty thick. For an indication, grab the end of an olympic bar. Hope this helps :)

I don't do any specific grip training. Plenty of deads and chins have helped me develop respectable strength in my forearms, hands and fingers though.

I've always found that thick bar work and weighted holds(hangs, heavy pulls, plate pinch grips, etc....) had the most transfer to actual work for me. Grippers tend to transfer over to just being better at grippers for the most part. I did find that something like an isometric hold and a slow release worked better than reps, and to take it slow as overtraining with them really sneaks up on you.

What was mentioned about genetics playing a role really shows up on grippers too, the ability to handle the spread on the larger models is key.

I think they really got popular simply because they are a small, easily carryable means to show strength quickly.

To stop guys who try to be dicks when shaking your hand, by trying to squeeze your fingers, extend your index finger, and shake hands with your hand shaped like a gun.

This changes the angle of your hand and forces the other guy to grab higher up by your palm, extending his fingers more and putting him in a bad leverage position.

If you do this, even a guy with a bear grip won't be able to crush your hand.
