Spent the night at Santa Monica City jail when I was 18 years old. My cell mate had stabbed someone. The horsehead ring I wore wouldn't come off my finger. Cop said not to worry, my cell mate would just cut my finger off if he wanted it. Needless to say, this was a sleepless night.

Hitched a ride with an old pervert who kept trying to scoot over next to me while driving. He missed my stop and intentionally paced the car through several more lights before he finally had to slow down enough that I jumped out of the car. Creep!

He did ten years in prison where he learned to sew up his knife wounds with guitar string. He is white and has a gaping large asshole now after ten years of doing time.

Another time hitchhiking to the beach, this older lady picked me up. She at least had the decency to make an upfront proposal for sex. I declined. Hmm.....she might have taught me a thing or two, but damn, she was like as old as my mother.

One last hitchhiking story. When I was 16 years old, I was working as a busboy for Denny's in North Hollywood. My shift ended after the last bus home (my car was broken down). It was a rare rainy night in L.A. I'm standing out on Ventura Blvd. with my thumb out trying to get a ride to Woodland Hills and apparently smiling like an idiot. A car pulls over. I get in the car with five other guys all built like fucking mountains. They seem friendly enough, until the driver asks me if I don't feel afraid being in the car with them. What the fuck? I said no....which was a lie. Who knows what was on their minds, but I must have handled myself well because, I was dropped off right at my driveway with my sweet little butt intact, thank goodness!

Speaking on someone knocking on the car window. It was New Year's morning and I'd spent the previous night at a New Year's party in Hollywood. It was a BYOB which for me was a fifth of Smirnoff vodka. Oddly, I could buy booze when I was 16 years old without having to produce ID. Sometime during the night, I'd decided I'd had enough and headed down to the car I arrived in with some friends. I crawled into the back seat sans shoes, jacket and as I would later find out wallet to sleep off the liquor. Now it's morning and this lady comes out to go to work only to discover me sleeping in her car....duh! She calls the cops. They come roust me from the car. I explain what happened and they tell me to start walking home and that they'd better not have anymore complaints. Home was a lot of miles away. I am not sure what time I crawled into my bed, but it wasn't long before my mom came in and told me that she had chores for me to do and to get my lazy ass out of bed.

What doesn't kill you, just makes you stronger and wiser. I never took my shoes off or left my wallet at another party. I still could down a fifth of Vodka though in and evening out....lessons learned and lessons ignored.

I was on a train going into Melbourne's city and I got off at the wrong stop. I was suppose to get off at Melbourne Central which led to all these speciatly shops. I get off and it's the wrong stop and there is nobody around except for two guys. One of them looks at my handbag and then gives this look to the other guy..  Like their eyes are talking. My gut instinct tells me they are going to rob me and so I start running for the escalator as fast as I can yelling "hi Dad" waving my hand. I pretended that my dad was at the top of the escalator. I never looked behind me.

You are a survivor, Booty.

My mom told me about an experience she had when taking a cab from New York City back home to South Orange, New Jersey. The cab driver made it clear he intended to have sex with her. Instead of freaking out, she told him she had to pee first. He pulled the cab off to the side of the road and she got out, walked into the woods to "pee" then got down on her hands and knees and crawled far enough out of sight that she could get up an run.

Women don't have to be victims.

There wasn't anyone within 5 miles of me. I got back to my car at 10:30 pm in the dark. Most trying day in my life.

I saw photos of other people out on Hanging Rock in the past so this was on my Bucket List. Silly thing to do on my own but I enjoyed the

exhilaration of being there by myself. The formation is over 100 metres high and the end is less than 2 metres wide.

I set my camera up on a tripod and triggered it with a Canon wireless remote control.

Come to think about it, Getbig is the most dangerous place I have been.

I was working at the gym by myself on a Friday night. There were regular members in there but I had also had an unknown guy pay as a casual one off session. I was shutting a roller door and casually making conversation with one of the male members. I notice this unknown guy is watching me and I get a bad feeling. Anyway it comes time to close and lock up the gym. I take 20 mins to go through my normal close up routine. I get outside the gym and I hear music playing. I look up and see that guy sitting in the parking lot in his car just watching me. I almost have a heart attack. I lock the door as fast as I can and then run for my car and get in and lock the doors and then drive away.

I think you would have liked her. My friends all thought she was cool. She was more of a buddy than a warm fuzzy mom type to me. She liked to say she was my big sister.

One time she invited a bunch of my friends to join us on a beach trip to Santa Monica. My mom always wore "two piece" swimsuits, a precursor to bikinis. Like you, before your breast augmentation, my mom was pretty flat chested. She would insert "falsies" into her top so she'd have those pointy 50's boobs. Anyway, she was out getting wet to cool off from tanning and her top came off. The rubber falsies started to float away. I heard her calling to my friends who were out in the surf too, to grab them. I was mortified. My friends thought is was great....bunch of horny teenage boys. Yes, my mom was something else. I miss her a lot.

I used to love getting a haircut with that head massage. I think this is one of the things I missed most when I went bald in my early 20's. I tried giving myself a head massage after buzz cutting my own hair, but it just ain't the same.

Sounds similar to me. I would wear these inserts in my gym crop top when I had lost all my fatty breast tissue. One day I was doing one arm DB rowes and they kept moving. So I reached down into my top and threw them on the floor and proceeded to do a set of rowes.

Riding in a cab in panama city to a local whore house. The driver decided to take us sight seeing and we went through a few "ghettos" where there where literally guys walking around with AK47's like it was nothing....

The other was when I was in Karachi Pakistan getting escorted to a joint military exercise.. we had convo like we where the fucking president.. The police officer next to me said that they can only control 50 ft off the highway on either side.. If you go past that your on your own.. that's how fucking dangerous that place was

During a hike in Sweden I made an involuntary dive into a swamp and could not get out. Luckily Phreak grabbed my backpack and pulled me out.

During a visit to a Slovakian mine the person before me got stuck in a narrow tunnel, so I couldn't get out either. That's where I found out I have claustrophobia...

When visiting a local library I got harassed by a group of 12-14 boys. Had to fight my way out, since nobody would help (or even notice something was wrong).

A former boyfriend placed a knife on my throat, for his pleasure. Got out of that house as soon as I could. This was one of the few boys my parents approved of, not knowing he had these abusive tendencies. (I also did not know until then)

During a one night stand I accidentally grabbed the guys gun instead of his manhood. He assured me he only used it on cats...  ::) (I'm an inch away from being a crazy cat lady)

Less dangerous, but still scary: during a visit in Turkey my passport got stolen, so I had to go to the police station. When I got out of the cab, at least 4 policemen were pointing their riffles at me. I don't speak a word Turkish, they don't speak anything else but Turkish. Luckily the cabdriver told them who I was and why I was there. Another very friendly police officer (with a huge black mustache) took me inside for loads of tea and biscuits, while we waited for a translator.

I got grabbed once when I was brisk walking on a track. A young guy on his bicycle called me sexy and I just rolled my eyes and kept walking. I did another lap and then out of the blue I feel a hand go up my shorts from behind. I screamed but he was too fast... He rode off. I always wear long pants now. And if I see anyone on a bike I am weary.

I studied Arabic and Persian at Uni. In summer of '98 I went to a language course in Iran. After me and a Swiss guy who had converted (I'm not religious) went traveling. We were in Tehran on the Friday and they have a massive prayer session in the Uni and the former president Rafsanjani used to rant on about whatever afterwards. I had gone in to watch from the side but decided I would walk outside and look in the book shop windows - all the shops were closed. After a few minutes a guy in a suit comes along and tells me to come with him and flashed basically a detectives badge. They were secret police. Took me to a side room and asked me what I was doing there, doing in Iran. I was worried they would make up some spy allegations. I think they checked my story out with the college I had been to and visa and let me go.

I would like you to try it again cause I have a little move added in. You see if it ever happens again I am going to put my leg out in front of the wheel and when he falls off the bike I am going to throw him into the pond where a crocodile lives. The big splash should get the crocs attention

Talking about crocs... I took an ex for a romantic picnic once. I had not been there before but it was a beach over looking day dream island. We set out with picnic baskets and I see a sign with a croc saying to be aware of crocs. We are walking past a croc swamp. He was like " um we are in croc territory". I said " get that bottle of wine out and if one comes at you then break the bottle and stick it in his mouth". Picnic was really nice and romantic but when we had to walk back past the croc swamp again it got all serious.

Got robbed by 2 dirty cops in Rio De Janeiro. Me and a bro stumbled out of a club pissy drunk at 3am and got stop by 2 cops asking if we had any illegal drugs on us. Earlier that day I went to the atm for close to 1k in reais and had it on me. These assholes asked why I was carrying so much cash and threatened to arrest me if I didn't hand it over. I was so shit faced I just wanted it all to be over and complied. Woke up the next morning mad as hell

15 years ago. Venice-Ghost town (the Hood). At 2am! (back then a Gang-Drug infested area.) Having an argument with Gangbangers and getting in a car shootout! Racing thru Venice doing 90 miles an hour and shooting at the same time. The feeling of probably getting shot and killed in my bronco was by far the scariest and most dangerous situation I have been in. They just gave up eventually. Not to mention I had problems sleeping for a couple nights. No bullshit.

Was driving up the dandenong mountains and there are a lot of really old houses there. My late partner told me one was haunted. We knocked on the door and it opened...I called out but nobody came. So I stepped inside and it was like something out of a horror movie. Extremely old fashion and had a big winding stair case. Out the back there were all these statues. I was creeped out. Then I hear this voice behind me and it's an old woman. She was actually quite nice and told me that if I had a million dollars I could purchase her home from her. Even if I did I wouldn't live there but of course I didn't tell her that .

I miss her a lot.
haha great story, sounds like she was a cool chick

15 years ago. Venice-Ghost town (the Hood). At 2am! (back then a Gang-Drug infested area.) Having an argument with Gangbangers and getting in a car shootout! Racing thru Venice doing 90 miles an hour and shooting at the same time. The feeling of probably getting shot and killed in my bronco was by far the scariest and most dangerous situation I have been in. They just gave up eventually. Not to mention I had problems sleeping for a couple nights. No bullshit.

Planning on visiting LA next year, wanted to be near Venice beach or Santa Monica. These aces any safer now (travelling with the wife). Where's best to stash in LA?

Off topic slightly, sorry!

Yes its totally changed. They cleaned it all up.  Stay in a Hotel/motel about5,miles inland and its much cheaper. Plenty of places right on Venice Blvd. Straight shot to the beach with bicycle, bus or car.(10 min to the beach). Its a little safer too. But Venice has some nice places as well. Just more money now.

At 18 I was crushing AP courses and preparing to enter the University and study these newfangled "computers". Then I discovered drugs and alcohol and got slightly sidetracked.

Still managed to do OK, but I lost a lot of brain cells. I think I have a new discrete mathematics model of prime number factor deduction of very large numbers kicking around in my sub-brain that would have rendered most public key cryptography useless, but damned if I can fish it out.

Also pretty sure there is a way to use acoustic harmonics at precise frequencies to chemically alter various proteins throughout a body to render cancer harmless.

No homo, of course.

It was Saigon at 3 AM for me. I was at a bar and this kid carrying a shoe-shine box comes up. And he says "Shine, please, shine!" I said no. He kept askin', yeah, and Joey said "Yeah." And I went to get a couple of beers, and the box was wired, and he opened up the box, fucking blew his body all over the place. And he's laying there, he's fucking screaming. There's pieces of him all over me, just like this, and I'm tryin' to pull him off, you know, my friend that's all over me! I've got blood and everything and I'm tryin' to hold him together! I'm puttin'... the guy's fuckin' insides keep coming out! And nobody would help! Nobody would help! He's saying "I wanna go home! I wanna go home!" He keeps calling my name! "I wanna go home, Johnny! I wanna drive my Chevy!" I said "With what? I can't find your fuckin' legs! I can't find your legs!"

On safari in south africa when I was 15, a bull elephant in full heat decided our land rover was looking like a prime target and blocked the road for like 20 minutes, our guide eventually got him to move by speaking some afrikaans to him, but I shit you not he was HUGE with big tusks the whole deal, and he was standing right in front of the car he coulda touched it with his trunk he was that close.

when I went to egypt the year after, every single cop had ak47's. the marketplaces were prety scary too, just tons of people crowding in and trying to sell you stuff, always had to check your pockets to see if you still had all your stuff where youd left it. One guy decided becuse i had long hair and ray bans that he was going to call me michael jackson. Again I shit you not...I look nothing like michael jackson. absolutely nothing like him. Those people dont take no for an answer. Cairo is also probably the dirtiest shit hole of a city Ive ever been in. every building has a patina of dirt half an inch thick covering it. Fucking nasty place. the tour was fun though, saw lot of cool stuff but the pyramids were kinda disappointing. nat geo makes em look huge but they are really nothing to write home about imo. I was more impressed with the huge temple complexes at luxor..

Never felt worried about my safety even when I should have. Went around slums in Sao Paolo at night trying to find a shop selling beer, could hear the odd gun shot and siren and 20-25 people were being murdered a night while I was there but anyone I met was always friendly and fascinated by seeing a foreigner there. Got in a fight in a nightclub there too first time I went despite gf telling me you could get shot if it's the wrong person.

Ireland is a pretty safe place, 30 years and never been randomly set upon or intimidated for no reason.

Two times was assaulted when I pulled off the Interstate in the wrong neighborhood... DWW. First was in Philly. I was with a customer, me driving and he reading directions. We just landed at airport and picked up rental car. My passenger said "get off here." Oh shit!! We looked around and we were in an impoverished neighborhood. I attempted a U turn and was suddenly surrounded by teens pounding on my car and shouting racial shit. They started to rock the car when an elderly man walked over from the gas station across the street and confronted the kids. "You little Ns get outta here and let these people alone." He looked like an authority figure in the neighborhood. He pointed to the Interstate return ramp and said "Go!" The rental agency wrote me up for all the dents.  Glad I bought the optional insurance.

The second time I was driving from RI to NYC when the luggage rack on the roof began to slip. I pulled off, as it turned out, in Spanish Harlem.
Bad mistake. As I struggled to retie my luggage I was attacked by a group of thugs. They pushed me aside and pulled off one of our suit cases. My wife reached under the seat and pointed her .38 at them and screamed...."leave us alone". They backed off shouting  "cool it bitch." I quickly retied the luggage and sped outta there.

I have worked 12 Step inside of prisons, walked the streets in the West Bank Palestine, and been on the edge of volcanoes. Nothing as scary as the  hoods of my own country. This however is kids stuff compared to what our combat veterans face every day.

The difference is that as a soldier you know what you're getting yourself into, and you normally have a different approach and mindset when going there (with weapons etc).

You should feel like it's a warzone when in your own country.

But it is what it is.

All of us will experience this in some degree or another.  The current economic/jobs situation is very grim.  Social unrest is inevitable at this point.  This will happen sometime in the near future.

When, where, why?

Nebraska Ave, Tampa Florida, 3am, lost or something...

Yeah, I've actually been there.  Played a bar in Tampa and was seriously lost at 3 am after a gig.  Went to a gas station and there were literally groups of people carrying baseball bats, interacting like characters in San Andreas.

Scariest place... crack house in Newtown, sarasota, FL.   As yall know, I'm too much of a wimp to use fina or pot or whatever, so yeah, crack is certainly out my league, but was trying to help a family member caught up in that bullshit.  It was 15 years ago maybe.  Standing in a crack house trying to get the person outta there.  Going room to room looking.  Fist all over that glock under my shirt in serious fear.

Dumb situation to enter, I'd like to think I'd never do that again, but at the time, you just do things.  I can't see how people can live that way.  Can't see how anyone can go to such a place to just use drugs, fart nonstop, and sit there for days on end.

Before GPS, my mom and I drove from the Palos Verdes area to Griffith Park Observatory and ended up on Western Ave. not knowing any better.  Didn't know how to "get out" and white-knuckled it the entire way, running several reds.

My mom moved to Queens with her boyfriend in the early 1980's. She didn't much like it there so she asked me to fly back to NY and drive her home to Oregon. I did. As we were leaving NY in her 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass she decided she needed to hit a bathroom to take a leak. We were in the Bronx just shy of the Washington bridge. All the buildings were boarded up. I handed her a paper cup and told her that this was her toilet until we crossed the Washington Bridge into New Jersey. I can't remember if she actually peed in the paper cup or not. Never-the-less, this ended up being a road trip to remember.

Early 1992 I arrived in Berlin in the middle of a skinhead rally. Police ran to me as soon as they saw me and told me to get away quickly (because I'm very obviously not German).

Unbeknownst to me and my mate, a couple had seen me and spent the day following us. They wound up shooting at us in our hotel room later that evening.

That was hairy.

Also up there was winding up in a place called Alexandria outside of Glasgow in the middle of the night. When you have a 30kg backpack on your back you're not that mobile.

Interesting, you've promised everything and delivered nothing in this post. How about you actually tell us what you'd be scared shitless to do today that you did back in the day. Otherwise, I call bullshit on you.

Empty statement again. Tell us why you never thought you'd see 18. Almost everyone does some crazy shit when they are young. It comes with the age of feeling invincible.

I had buddy who got in a bar fight in Mexico.  He spent 8 months in jail before they got him out.

On side note, when I was in Rio, there was a story of a teacher who got in a bar fight with a patron (the guy turned out to be police). Anyway, he got capped twice in the abdomen and didn't make it home alive.

I lived in Mangueira for a summer.  How did you navigate slums in SP?  You need a ghetto pass in Rio.

Okay. A little snippit from your storied past would be more interesting than lost leaders, even if typed using one finger. Maybe others here know more of your past tales than I do. I for one do not judge people. We all have a past. If we've lived at all some of it can be embarrassing and/or illegal. I seriously doubt you live a sheltered life or were raised by Chaolin monks....but if you were, there is probably an interesting story surrounding it.

Got caught in the middle of a shoot out about 6 years ago..
I was at the wrong place at the wrong time.
I was in Nuevo Laredo Mexico at a get together / party...
A friend of a friend that was very well connected with the Mexican cartel of the zetas which at the time I was not aware until I got to the house  :-\
Security / body guards every where around this big house mansion..
Rival cartel ( probably Gulf or sinaloa) started shooting at the house around midnight..
I saw people go down in front me.. I shit my pants ... The craziest experience in my life.

when i was 13 on vacations in corsica island , mediteranean sea, in the morning i decide to go the beach alone my parents still sleeping. I get there, sea is calm theres s nobody and i swim with my mask and snorkel kit...500 meters from the beach. I start to get tired and decide to head back when something weird happens; I'm more and more often at the through of the wave and...waves actually get taller and taller, for some reasons I almost cant see the fucking beach anymore. So I'm 13, skinny, didnt eat shit in the morning, tired of swimming, I know nobody knows where i am at that moment, and apparently something is wrong with the sea it aint calm anymore. I thought i was going to die for the first time of my life. I kept swimming with everything i had, finally almost reached beach when in the last 100 meters or so i realize that waves crashing on the shore where like 5 meters high.

I kept trying to reach the beach and the last test is to actually get out of the water while the huge waves recede and pull my frail body back into the sea, so I m almost out of stamina and shunted between the waves that became huge and in a last effort i finally reach the sand, head back home while looking at the huge waves crashing on the shore wondering what went wrong.

Said nothing to parents. In the afternoon listening to the news we learn there has been an earthquake under the sea in the morning that generated the waves i was caught in in the morning.

That's funny I ll always remember this event.

Great post, Uberman. I cannot top this story of course, but as a kid I loved swimming in the ocean. -Never worried about sharks or riptides. I was a frail lad much like you describe. Although I don't remember ever feeling like my life was in danger, I'd swim out to the fishing boats at State Beach in Santa Monica. My mom was busy turning her skin into leather so she didn't notice how much farther I would swim out then the other folks in the surf. All I can think is that there is power in ignorance. Had I known the dangers at play, I might not be posting this tonight.

NAM ,,,, Stranded on rural jungle roadway' that was a mile long minefield. Rescued by 101st Airborne.

Nam ,,,, Surrounded during recon patrol. 101st to the rescue once again as no one else could reach us due to heavy fighting.

I love the 101st!!!! God bless 'em all!

It was a tradition to throw a party for anyone who pulled us out of an adverse combat situation.

That party was the best military event I ever participated in and the 101st adopted me as one of thier own with one hell of a drunken ceremony which I'll never forget even though I was totally fooked up.

The party ended when we were called back out inro the jungle once again (another event I'll never forget!)

Had a hangover for the next 24 hours ... but much better than being 'deaded'.

Giod bless the 101st!!!!.

A couple parts of houston when I was buying dope seemed fairly dangerous. Luckily most of the bangers and thugs i was getting my shit from adopted me as the token white friend,  as i was a former marine and metalhead and I didnt even try to pretend to be one of them or throw down with them like the poser wiggers they all ripped off and took advantage of, and flat beat a couple of them because they acted like bitches and the thugs picked up on it.

Probably helped that I also told one of them as long as we did business, if he did right by me, id take care of him and bring him lots of business,, but if he fucked me id kill him. Looking back I certainly wouldnt have, but he believed me, and it helped since they all thought I was slightly crazy anyway. They got a kick out of this crazy white guy that strolled right into their neighborhood and kicked it with them like nothing.

I remember seeing one wigger kid get his ass robbed and beat because he was trying to act all gangster and throw down with the black dudes, they called him all kinds of shit and beat his ass while I was sitting on the couch thinking "fuck, man im glad these guys like me".

I asked one of them about that one time, he told me that they wouldn't do that to me because I was straight up and I was who I was and didnt try to act like someone I wasnt, and they respected me for that.

Crazy shit.

Thats one of the biggest reasons I laugh at people like joey Swoll, I wonder if they have any idea how the people thwyre imitating would react if they showed up in their 'hood.

- Was bracketed and nearly detained by a Muslim group in east Africa.  Got back to the tourist area through side alleys and backyards.

- Frequent travels through Little Haiti and Liberty City in Miami, as a bail bondsman trainee and jewelry transporter. Gawd!

- Jackson, Mississippi.  Had to swap Uhaul trailers while transporting my classic Corvette.  The swap occurred in front of a housing project.  You could actually SEE the shift in movements as the inhabitants got more and more curious seeing the white guy furiously securing his car to get the fuck outta there.

- post-Katrina New Orleans, boots on ground a week after the hurricane happened as private security detail.  Did a month of duty for a decent paycheck.

We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail.

What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, sharks come cruisin' by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that shark, he go away ... but sometimes he wouldn't go away.

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin', 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then ... ah, then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those sharks come in and they rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour.

Thursday mornin', I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb.

My son-in-law whose MOS was forward observer was stationed in Mosul where the mess hall was blown up. Fortunately, he was sleeping at the time and not eating or he'd probably be gone. Unfortunately, he helped clean of the mess of body parts of some of his comrades. I don't ask him for details. He doesn't need to relive that experience anymore often than he probably already does.

Best part of the movie.  However, I was very surprised that Speilberg did not catch this mistake... it was July when this happened, not June.  Also, 317 men survived, not 316.

FO? Chair force?

Oh yeah.

Instead of designating, the FO took out a 99-year lease on the building and had the JAGs evict the hajjis.
