did you ask about his synthol use and how his transplanted kidney is doing?
-
Though I never met the guy, gotta go with Haney. Probably the coolest competitor ever.
-
did you ask about his synthol use and how his transplanted kidney is doing?
no but we asked him if we should do sterons
we was natural homos at the time
he said "look around ... almost everyone here is on gear lol...." (we were at fibo)
he didnt want to give us unhealthy advise so he said "at the end of the day you gotta decide these things.............but you should also try my special creatine with black pepper"
we also asked him about strength and rep ranges
and he said
"strength comes automatically, never train for strength is you wanna be a bodybuild"

If Flex knew anything about training, he wouldn't have had to hire Charles Glass all those years. Either that, or he just needed someone with the capacity to count to 10 for him. Which may still disqualify Charles.

He seemed kind of nervous when I talked to him. I assume he was looking out for rogue Ninjas

This.
I travelled to Gold's Venice in '94, a few days in front of when Flex was to return from FIBO. Platz, with whom I was essentially gonna hang for that week, was also not yet in town. So I had a bit of time to myself to lift and soak in the sights. (I ended up having a blast with Priest, David Paul, Jason Mathas, etc., as it turns out.) Anyway ...
I approached Wheeler's training pal, Rico McClinton, introducing myself as an editor from MuscleMag. Told him I'd be interested to meet Flex and perhaps even catch a workout with them while I was in town. Rico was super friendly (as well as all the other guys he was with) and told me Ken was to return any day, and when he did, he would gladly introduce me. Said he saw no issue with my lifting with them.
Flex returns a day ahead of Tom, I see him in Gold's, so I head over to where they are. Rico flashes a smile and introduces me. Flex barely acknowledges me and literally walks away, brushing past. Rico, being the beta of that group (no offence to him), just gives me a sorry-man-I-don't-know-what-to-say look and follows Wheeler.
Days later, after I'd been training with Platz, Priest, David Paul, (and beside Lou at one point at World Gym), Flex saunters over at Gold's, saying something to the effect of, Yeah, man! I didn't know you were an editor at MuscleMag. How you doing?!
I flatly say, I'm good. Thanks, and walk past him, not giving him the time of day. I guess once he found out I worked for Bob Kennedy, I was important.
I don't play that game.
Total prick.
P.S. I attended a seminar he gave many months after at what was at the time Monster Gym (before that, Arnold's Gym ... was forced to change the name when Arnold threatened legal action ... and one night the front windows were shot out in a drive-by) in Toronto. He arrived like he was King of the World and proceeded to bore the living hell out of everyone with two hours of yammering about his water weight and being "dryer" doing this and that.
People were literally falling asleep.

How was Alana Triplett? Was she cool? Stories?

Nicest Pro - Vince Taylor
I was working for Pinnacle when Taylor was contracted by the company. The owner, Mel Rich (RIP), asked me to ghost write Vince's autobiography/training manual. He told me to call Vince at his home. I did ... many times. Left messages ... spoke with his wife ... kids ... Never got a return call. I wasted so much time and became so frustrated with him not getting back.
The next time I spoke with Mel, weeks later, I told him I was officially done with Vince and his goofball book. He said he'd have him call me, saying Vince was a sponsored athlete, so he'd light a fire under his ass. I said, Whatever.
Within a day I get a message from Vince saying he had spoken with Mel and was excited to chat with me about his book.
Erased the message and never called him back. Then I called Rich and told him I wasn't gonna ghost write any damn book for the big turd.
Months later I meet up with Vince at the Olympia Expo and he's all like, Hey, man! Aren't we gonna write my book?! I'm like, Not me, Vince. But good luck to you, and I walk away.
Jackass.

Who the fuck is Alana Triplett?
She was one of those fitness models featured in Musclemag in the late 90s early 2000s, along with Cori Nadine, among others.

She's not even worth a google. Not good

Oh. I was not at MuscleMag during those years. And besides, all these fitness sluts had became a big blur to me by that time. Wasn't Cori Nadine featured in Playboy? I seem to think I have some nude pics of her somewhere ... Anyway ...
I do remember Bruce Patterson smashing one of 'em during her stay in Toronto. We were hanging in his hotel room and he would occasionally put down his submarine sandwich and say he was going to this fitness slut's room to hit it, once again. No joke. But for what I know now, the guy could have been disappearing to visit one of the ice machines to meet a paying schmoe.
What do I know?

Beats me. Was a huge fan of his back in the day ( back when I was a teen and natural ). Went up to him at the Arnold, saw that he was talkin to a fellow " athlete ", waited my turn ... and kept waitin ... and waitin ... Jeff looks over ... I keep waitin ... and waitin ... etc., etc. Completely blew me off. Saw me and ignored me like I wasn't even there. :/ Finally, I walked off and never bought any AST supplements again. Pissed me off.

Sorry to hear that. :/ Have met Vince MANY times and he was just as cordial as could be. And not only to me, but to everybody that was around him.

I always thought someone should offer Rico some money to ghostwrite a tell all of Golds at that time and Flex and Cormier. I'm sure Rico knows all sorts of interesting things. What is he doing now?

Alana was a black fitness model,
(http://www.afwwrestling.com/images/Alana_Tripplet_6.jpg)
Musclemag shot few of those. Cori Nadine did do Playboy, and so did Amy Fadhli.
Bruce? Wasn't he on the "Bay Likey Team"?

If you're looking to hit 0% bf then look for someone else. Insecure Flex would never let a fellow athlete achieve such an accomplishment.

no secret all the same 4 guys wheeler/ray/titus/lou have been mentioned as pricks by numerous accounts here alone.

I'd give my right kidney to meet Flex Wheeler
+ 5.3
subtle ;D
-
I've had two experiences with Flex. First I was at the South Beach Pro in 96. Walked up and asked if I could get a picture with him and my wife. He said hold on one minute came back and I shot the pic. Probably agreed because my wife is attractive.
Second was off season before the 99 Olympia. He was making an appearance at a supplement store in S. FL. He was at his all time biggest said he weighed 289. His arms and delts were stupid round and huge, cartoonish (Halo would have shot his load in his pants.) Asked him if he was gonna come back and beat Ronnie and take the Olympia, he just kind of mumbled and nodded his head.
Flex came off as kind of shy and aloof. Seemed kind of uncomfortable around people he didn't know. He mentioned in his book flexibility that he was very shy.
Although with all of his fame in Bodybuilding, it appeared he became arrogant and cocky. Seems like a lot of people have had not so great experiences with Flex in back his competitive days.

My nomination for post of the month.

Dex told some kid to fix his broken camera. Or was it that Dex broke the kid's camera? And Shawn told King Kamali as a kid to keep dreaming (something like that)...and that is what Kamali has continued doing to this day.

I knew and worked with Flex for almost 15 years. As with most bodybuilders, I didn't know if they were truly my friend or just worked with me because it was just good business. A lot of pro's would joke around and be relaxed around me, but back then, they sorta had to deal with me. Know what I mean?
Unfortunately, Flex was what some call a "fair weather friend." When things are going good, he's around. When things aren't going good for me, he's no where to be found.
With that said, I do know Flex has a couple friends he's actually close with. His biggest problem? Flex doesn't like himself. I don't think he knows how.
For a while there, when he found God, he seemed to have direction and purpose in his life beyond money, fame, or temptation. He fell off the boat (so did Shawn Ray) many times, and eventually floundered. I don't fault him for that. What I'm saying is Flex isn't the type of good person he could have been. He could have been a lot of things, actually. The best thing he could do is get a therapist and work things out (I say this with all due respect).
He has been through a lot of tragic events in life. I guess we'll never see his true potential, personally or professionally. Either way, I wish him well.
-
when you meet an ifbb pro bodybuilder, you cannot expect them to be nice. they are constantly being harassed and annoyed for autographs when walking down the street. as soon as they leave their home, the paparazzi is all over them, taking photographs and asking them a million questions. then their pictures are featured in the new york times, new york post, enquirer, etc. if i was getting harassed like this, id be in a bad mood, too.
-
I like his story from back in the day about fending off 2 car jackers. It was hilarious. You can tell this guy lies so much, he believes his own bullshit. Never a fan of his personality. He'll never recover now.

Flex" was no one nice in his prime..... fact
-
"Flex" getting dwarfed by Big Mike in that pic.
-
Strydom was a great guy when I met him. We hung around a little.
We drove around LA in his badass car and found ourselves at his Crazee Wear warehouse at one point, where he proceeded to just give me a bunch of shit. When we ate at Firehouse, I SWEAR I have never seen a man eat so much. Gary was gigantic, too: he told me around 285. Hard as nails. His wheels were possibly the freakiest I have ever seen on a man standing over six feet. Only maybe Dillett's came close.
Just a gentleman with a big charisma.
-
Arvilla owning Wheeler. Awesome story. Big Mike was ready to do work

I remember gary carrying a gun with him everywhere due to issues with the crackheads who sometimes used to just wash cars in the golds lot then ask for money, Gary wouldnt pay and it got all ugly, crackhead was dishing him everywhere

shit... it'd take me an hour to make a list of 'nice' and "asshole" pro's...
Titus was never an asshole to me. always got along with him really well. quite possibly because we're very similar. lol.. not exactly a good thing.
Flex always seemed nervous or shy or afraid of interacting with people... super stand-offish. always arrogant, but I never really knew him to be angry. at least not generally angry.. seem him angry sure, but not am all day thing.
-

Honestly, he had no choice other than to lie about the car jacking ninjas.
Basically, something yet-to-be disclosed happened in Flex's life that seriously impacted his ability to prep for the Olympia. His supplement contract with Country Life mandated his participation in specific shows. To avoid a lawsuit he would NOT have won against CLife, he did what he could: he lied.

??
you saying you know what it is but won't say?
I'd always heard that he was fat, couldn't handle the stress, would eat like it's offseason thinking he could pull it together at the last minute and realized he was fat and would embarrass himself, punched a wall and broke his hand and overdosed on painkillers.
and I believe the story he told involved Escrima or Kali sticks or whatever, not nunchukas.

I bumped into Flex at the 2000 Mr. O (I was on a work conference in Vegas and our hotel was right next to the Mandalay bay - our free day coincided with the PJ and expro) Flex actually came across as a real dick to me >:( but in his defence he was competing/dehydrated...maybe his attitude has changed since his health issues...
Lou Ferrigno was a crunt too (as stated by others) saw him palm some kids camera away who tried to take a picture.
The nicest pro I ever met was Gary Strydom we chatted about all kinds of stuff not just bodybuilding and he seemed really interested in other people too not just himself.
Other down to earth friendly Pros I’ve met was Francis Bennifatto (Real funny character - very passionate about BB even to this day, bit like talking to yoda when it came to training lol...and Mike Matarazzo may he PIP :-\ met him at the 2000 Mr O too took time to chat and seemed really down to earth.

Don't wanna mess with these types, Mike. If they can chop inch-thick pine in half, just imagine what this could do to the human neck. Plus, the "kee-YA!" alone is enough to demoralize even the toughest of men.

^this^ "Flex" was a cocky arrogant prick in his prime/heyday ...thought he could "bang" anyones g/f visiting golds gym in the early 1990's ....blatantly hit on them in front of everyone (this led to a confrontation at the "Firehouse" restaurant/after my girl told me he said "fuck your boyfriend meet me later"...I fucking went after him and Chris Cormier had to break it up ("you don't want to mess with him he's a black belt" ) Dillett and Strydom just watched....took it outside/lotta shoving yelling but that was about it........
Flex" was no one nice in his prime..... fact
Was this pic taken before or after he stole your girlfriend the incident?
-
Was this pic taken before or after he stole your girlfriend the incident?
Pic was taken "PTTFMG" "(Pre-Trying-To-Fuck-My-Girl") in Massachusetts....Cormier was very nice (apologizing for "Flex" and inviting me to the club he bounced at that night/Roxy/Roxbury" or something like that/put us on the guest list) "Flex" was an incredible bodybuilder (one of the most genetically gifted of all time) but was shit (imo) as a human being

he looks pretty pissed getting his pic taken..

History would indicate that it would be Flex that would need to concern himself with his neck. The only thing tough about Flex was his talk.
-
Honestly, he had no choice other than to lie about the car jacking ninjas.
Basically, something yet-to-be disclosed happened in Flex's life that seriously impacted his ability to prep for the Olympia. His supplement contract with Country Life mandated his participation in specific shows. To avoid a lawsuit he would NOT have won against CLife, he did what he could: he lied.
He was weak willed, didn't train hard and cheated on his diet. Case closed.
-
Is that Vissy right behind Flex in the black shirt? Is Vissy a time traveler?

This was a serious reply to my post?

Charles Glass said differently about training. Charles had said that he told Flex told to stop training that heavy. This was back in 92-93. And remember he trained with Chris Cormier, who was known for training very heavy. And Chris has never said Flex was weak.
-
Great stories, guys !! Keep em comin !!
Have met a TON of pros, myself. At work now, but will try and post a few stories later. :)
-
Strydom was a great guy when I met him.
Do you remember what he ate, Fortress ? Curious.
-

So he trained hard for what, a few years? Flex is notoriously lazy. What happened in 1998? He admitted to cheating on his diet and not training hard because he wanted to go clubbing and didn't want to be sweaty. Not exactly Dorian Yates in the work ethic department.
-
Flex was right about the training though. Strength comes, better to train a bit lighter and for a pump to be more of a bodybuilder once you get to a certain strength.
-
He was prob nice because he felt sorry for you.
-
when you meet an ifbb pro bodybuilder, you cannot expect them to be nice. they are constantly being harassed and annoyed for autographs when walking down the street. as soon as they leave their home, the paparazzi is all over them, taking photographs and asking them a million questions. then their pictures are featured in the new york times, new york post, enquirer, etc. if i was getting harassed like this, id be in a bad mood, too.
:)

Yeah...and he ain't broke down like Ronnie (minus Flex's kidney issues). No, he didn't have Dorian or Ronnie's work ethic. Flex's main problem was his head. He said in his vid Mass Construction that after his accident, he went to the 94 O and didn't think he could stand on stage with those guys. That right there shows you that the accident "shook" him. He was never the same after it. For all that bravado, the man was scared, and sabotage himself. He liked the trappings of winning, but he'd rather do martial arts than diet.

he was without a doubt on a physique level one of the most genetically gifted with 'assistance'there was, even with the blown out unreal arms/delts 96/2000 that looked flexed'relaxed'he still pulled it off,,beaten to a dead horse 'his mro debut'was stellar...
-
Personally, I never really liked Flex's physique. Always thought Cormier was superior to him in every way.

When you look at Flex's physique with a critical eye about SEO oil after 1995, his muscles are water balloons. He also is narrow not unlike Heath...

Would say Flex's use of Synthol/SEO's was the best ever seen.

:)..YEAH..
-
Flex early showing in 93 at the ironman and Arnold was behind the Yates Olympia 93,but still the second best presented body ever, with Leverone 93 Olympia being 3rd. Ronnie can only be mentioned due to overall muscularity and size, the three mentioned on their days displayed size shape condition and symmetry at levels they never achieved personally again in their own career's. But in my opinion the sport never progressed after those showings
-
Personally, I never really liked Flex's physique. Always thought Cormier was superior to him in every way.
I liked Cormier's phyisque, and if you think about it, Cormier was more symmetrical than Flex. Cormier had the type of physique where nothing stood out, everything was proportionate. What Flex had was those super round muscle bellies and small waist, which made him look bigger than what he actually was.

I think the same too
Flex really only had a few good yrs where he looked out of this world , the rest overrated and weird looking body parts
Guy didn't have the structure to carry mass and when he played the size game his physique couldn't hold

Chris had the structure to carry mass. A 250+ pound Cormier looked better than a 240ish Flex. Flex's structure really looked good only with 216-225 pounds. Maybe 230ish, but that was pushing it. And the person who looked good at that range was Melvin. Dex had told Melvin to stop coming in the 230s, and that he looked better lighter, Melvin didn't listen.
Chris Cormier looked like he could carry as much weight as Ronnie, and still keep his proportions better than Ronnie could.

And look where Dorian's extreme "work ethic" got him...
dorian: 6 sandows and currently still a training "authority" who does regular appearances with top pros n shit
flex: 0 sandows and oily arms
but real nice guy no homo
-
For the 1000th time still say Flex's 98 Arnold Physique may be the greatest ever seen. My opinion, don't care about Sandow's.

Better than '93? I don't know, Ronnie, that physique was flawless.

No body care about best showing only winning sandows matter
Like in basketball, football, soccer, baseball. Only thing that matters in the end is winning the big one, everything else is just secondary
-
Oh, Flex, the genetic number 1 is narrow on getbig, haha.
-
-
"That'll show you had to get those big 32 and halfs."
"That is attached to a 28 inch waist..."
-
And look where Dorian's extreme "work ethic" got him...
Best current body of the 90's pro's maybe matched by Priest and Benfatto or Strydom and the last 2 weren't top pro's
-
And look where Dorian's extreme "work ethic" got him...
6 Sandows
-
6 Sandows, divorce, possible health problems (we don't know), and a hot Brazilian wife
hmmm....
-

93 was fantastic,, but 98 Arnold Flex was dry and ripped and in the 230's.

That's right, I remember that freemasonry picture. It surprised me, since most freemasons are pretty secretive about their identity (no pun, I understand their motivation).

Think about, you haven't heard too much from him since, either.
Befitting for the man. Chris Cormier has alluded to the "mystique" of Flex (this was in regards to him competing and winning against him). And often writers have described him as elusive, aloof, distance, mercurial, etc.
Look at that vid, the arrogance is an act. The muscles are merely a shield to hide behind.

Shield of muscles.. good observation, and I believe that this applies to most bodybuilders.
I wouldn't be surprised if he left the scene for good and maybe even stopped with training. Yeah, he seems to possess a certain personality that made him fit right in.

Flex ain't never gonna stop training. As long as those ninjas are lurking, he has to be ready.
No seriously, training in some manner, whether it be weights or martial arts are too engrained into Flex's mind and persona...it is part of him.

Oil has made an already ridiculous pageant (thanks to the 90s insulin gurus) downright unwatchable. Why not just give the Sandow to the dude who fashions the best muscle costume? Seriously, what's the f'n difference?

Still the best application of oil ever.
As much as I hate to admit it, this is true. Even though Shawn Ray had said that his delts look like they were stung by bees.

Supposedly Flex at his biggest right before the 99 Olympia

Yup that's from his book. I saw him even bigger before he started dieting in 99. Said he was 289 he was so fucking round and huge I will never forget that.

I'm trying to remember the weight he quoted in his book for that pic , I want to say in the 260s I can't recall

Looks great there, but I don't know about the Ronnie thing. Next to each other the size difference seems just too overwhelming. Especially the chest and delts, you can tell Ronnie's not pulling off that shapely Flex "illusion" thing; his shit is ridiculously wide and densely-packed muscle, no illusion at all.
Try to post a pic from that first O Ronnie won, where Flex and him are standing side by side relaxed. The difference in their chest mass is staggering.

By a woman.
what kind of guy complains about being "molested" by a woman?
that alone tells me the dude has a victim complex, as most guys who were 'molested' by a woman as a kid, would never call it 'being molested'.
imagine the shit Madeline has to put up with with that dude.

He was a kid, like under 11. A family member and then I think another woman. That's possibly why he acts the way he does.

Ronnie had ridiculously thick, round muscle bellies from head to ....knee. and insane vascularity
and was a big man.
Flex was maybe 5'9", not a thick guy by nature...but he was perfect.
-
flintstone.
ronnie was clear winner. flex looked very ummmm.. weird...looked very weak too in front of ronnie
he was a lazy bodybuilder who used drugs to the max. dangerous ones . may be not amphetamines but who knows..guy is mentally ill imo. still use oil. ::)
wheeler was a freak on what he could build with drugs and latter with seo/oil,,look at his joints tiny all around great illussion ,but not meant to carry the muscle and power like coleman,,2 cartoonish builds ,different frames to hold/carry it,,,

Agreed, it's all about preference. Would of loved to see Flex show up at the 98 Olympia in the condition he was in in the 98 Arnold. Things may certainly have turned out different.
