Look how much bigger Mikes arms are compared to Casey, even as Casey is holding tight and pressing them against his body.
Mike laughs at this attempt.

There is a slight problem with calling onlyme a dwarf.

Sadly, he's 6'1'', and far from qualifying from midget status. Which is too bad, since short people tend to be quite funny and jolly.

You know I like to post pics when I was in shape.  I will be back there too.  At 300 I had just smigen over a 37" waist.  I fit into 36" Calvin and Cavericchis(?) which were my favorite pants.   I didn't have a 6 pack but at one time I did have a 4 pack.  I didn't diet that much either though.  I just trained harder.
I weigh exactly 300 in thse pics.  In fact I for some reason could not lose or gain weight for the longest time. I was stuck at 300 to 303 or so.  Just before I got bit I weighed 298.  I did the 585 at 290 I was 26 years old.  IN 1980 at the Original World Gym I weighed 247 and benched 500 with Joe Gold standing right over me.  In 1995 I inclined the highest I ever did and that 505 when I trained with Joe Onasia, Tony Leiato, Francis Silva, Tony Harris and some other super strong guys in Hawaii.  I took testerone 200mg cypionate in 1986 for about 6 months up to the Worlds.  That's it.  I didn't need anything else. I have not touched anything since.  When I first started training seriously in 1979 I did try Dianabol and a little Winstrol.  But that only lasted  a few months.  SO in 1995 I was as strong as I was almost 10 years earlier on stuff.  1998 was my last good year.
I started back training when I moved to Vegas after the bite.  I was getting some strength back.  I did get my BNP back to 315 and bench back to 405 for 6.  Then I moved back to Hawaii in 2002.  My leg acted up allot and I had a business so gym time was lacking.  I am back in the gym and I told my training partner now that we will be doing 405 for a few by the end of next month.  So hopefully I will be back on track.  I feel good now.  I have no problem with Chic or anyone else calling me fat now.  I am. But I am getting my upper body back pretty quickly.  The cardio will be upped and I should be okay.  I am planningon going to the Olympia this year.  I won't be 100% back I don't think but I will be a whole better and not to far off.
Oh and Ray Mentzer was my training partner in 1985 to 1986.

Mike Mentzer and the Robby Robinson were my first inspirations as a teenager. I admired Mikes strength/power and by doing a modified version of HIT, I became one of the strongest guys at my gym. I was ONLY 17, NO gear and out lifting grown men who had been training for years. Mentzer was definitely  an influence on how I approached training.
RIP Mike  :'(

Hard to say.  1981 was definitely the year for Tom Platz.  But Mentzer would have been up there and may have won it.

Yes. He and Ray used to train with Denny Malloy (now deceased) at Gold's on 2nd street when I first moved to L.A. in the summer of 1980. I often saw them training. The summer of 1981, after Gold moved to it’s current location in Venice, I trained with Samir Bannout and Mike was still training very seriously with Ray and their training partner Jerry McCall. I also saw then training during most of that summer and got to train with them on three occasions when Jerry was traveling. They were very strong (especially Ray) and did more work sets that they preached.

The gym was packed with guys training for the California, the America and the Olympia. It wasn’t uncommon to see Platz, Samir, Ray, Mike, Casey Viator, Robert Jodkiewicz, Mike Christian, Charles Glass, Pat Hayes, Chris Dickerson and others training at any given time.

I saw the late great in Mentzer the lobby of the Beacon right before the pre judging of the very first Night Of The Champions. Mike was one of my heros back then so but I couldn't work up the courage to say anything to him. He had a red warm up suit on and HUGE delts, that were apparent even while he was covered up. What struck me (I was was 18 and 6ft tall) was how short ALL of the competitors were.

Actually.....  to me Gustavo Badell's physique reminds a lot of Mentzer's.  They've got a lot of the same structure, except of course Badell is a lot bigger.

Mentzer was big and thick for his time but in my opinion lacked a lot of the details that some of his competitors had.

Max is right about it not being uncommon back in the early to mid 80's to see allot of the top pros training at one time.  Every guy you saw in the magazines was training either at Gold's or World's or both.  I trained in the morning back then cause my training partner then could only train then.  I lived in Manhattan Beach and drove all the way to Santa Monica to be there by 8am.  It was a mightmare most of the time.  When you live in LA you look for and try every possible shortcut possible to get to where you are going.  I took backstreets, alleys and every which way to get there in the shortest amount of time so I could try to sleep in longer.  But there are none.  The traffic was just horrible.  My mom used to do it everyday.  Her office was in downtown on the 66th floor of the UCB Building which to this day is still the tallest building in LA.  Not sure what's it called today.
But it was worth the drive to train in the morning with these guys. Allot of movie stars too.  But the only one who I remember the name is Brad Harris.  I'll never forget the day I was walking up the stairs and looked up and Sergio was standing their talking to Eddie G. in a suit.  Man he looked cool.

Oh and about Mentzer (Mike) I never saw him in shape.  I didn't even meet him through Ray.  I met him one day when I was going to Gold's back in the early 90's to see Pete.  He was in the front lobby.  Just said Hi and that's about it.  I'm not sure the last year Ray competed.  But, I was training with him going to his gym in 85' and 86'.  Muscle Mill was a great gym.  Small in comparison to most gyms though but had everything you needed.  I think an old frined who was a fireman bought it from Ray.

I've got a couple of books about Mike that have come out in the past couple of years by john little.  Mike seemed to me to have amazing potential to build quality muscle..I remember in the book "Beef It" robert kennedy is talking about different body types, he does arnold, zane, tony pearson and mike.  Mike got the highest rating in the mesmorph category.  I'd love to have access to all of that old natilus stuff just to try some of the stuff that he used to do out.  I've tried the lat pulldown machine out and it's awsome..if you ever get a chance to try that machine out do it, it takes your hands out of the movement so you don't have to worry about gripping the bar.

Always considered Robinson & Fox like Mentzer, but better. Robby's density in particular blew away Mike, who lacked detail, possibly because of his HIT training. Szkalak & Padilla comparable too, but Mike was up there & received tremendous hype, in part because of his innovative training and in part the fact that he was one of the better white bodybuilders then.

Mentzer, Robinson, Padilla & Szkalak all left the IFBB quickly because of politics. If Weider had been fairer and allowed these guys to win as they deserved, the early 80s competitive scene would've been a lot more interesting.

I trained in the same gym as Mike and Ray Mentzer in the early 1970's, Spartan Health Club in Maryland.  And again later a few times at Olympian Gym in Tysons Corner, Virginia.  Mike also worked part time with Dr. John Ziegler in Olney, Maryland where I lived at the time.  Dr. Zielger was the U.S. Olympic Weightlifting Team Coach and pioneered the use of anabolic steroids, specifically Dianabol, in the late 1950's.  He also invented the electronic muscle stimulation machines for use by paraplegics.  Mike was kind of a physical therapist assistant or something.  In the gym, his calves always looked amazing; so big they made his quads look small.

Ahh, drat.  Just noticed that.  And you're right, it was Ray with the prominent veins down his arms.  They looked different facially but at times were easy to confuse.

What's the big deal with Mentzer anyway?  Because of his retarded HIT training?  He had no chest, 0 back thickness, minimal lats, horrible hair style...  I'll give him credit for his arms, they were pretty good, so I guess HIT will develop the arms but nothing else.  He always looks angry in almost every picture I've ever seen him in...  Probably from having a grossly overtrained CNS.

Your theory only has one flaw: Dorian did HIT (old school HIT, not Mentzer 1993+) and had NO arms. But he did have GREAT LATS, A THICK CHEST and everything else that you just pointed out Mike does´nt have.

That's because genetics determines how you look, not the way you train. People also attribute Dorian's grainyness to HIT training,  which is ludicrous

HAHAHAhaha how true. IT's funny how Mentzer was considered blocky and thick waisted, but his waist is tighter than almost all of today's gut-builders.

He did have unusually wide hips for a guy of his stature.  Sure his waist was tight in that clip, but in the 80' Mr olympia his guy was pretty bloated for the standards they had back then.

No it doesn't.  Because Dorian didn't do HIT, he did his own modified version that included many more exercises and sets per bodypart than Mentzer ever prescribed.

Mentzer's only back exercise was the undergrip pulldown and maybe deadlifts here and there.  This explains the comeplete lack of back thickness you see in the clip.  There are abercrombie models with more definition and cuts in their backs.  For chest all he did was incline press, and pec-deck flyes, thus he had very little overall chest thickness as a result.  Dorian did atleast 4 exercises for chest, and 5 or 6 for back in any given workout which is why he carried the giant chest/back thickness he had.

Dorian did undergrip barbell rows, machine rows, undergrip pulldowns, 1 arm cable rows, then deadlifts in the same workout...  Obiviously the guy knew exactly what he was doing when he built that monolithic back.  Mentzer just said "Oh gee this one exercise hits my whole back, if I do more I'll over-twane!"

So the moral is that Dorian crafted Mentzer's HIT into a real muscle building routine that built something that regular HIT could never do.  Mentzer with his superior genetics sadly only got the size he did because HIT will only take you so far with mass despite the tremendous strength you acquire on the few exercises you do.  I think Dorian's chest after 2 years of training was thicker than Mentzer's ever was.

Yes Mike had problems. No argument there. I knoew him and witnessed this.

He is alleged to have been lovers with his brother Ray, who committed suicide days after Mike's death.

These statement is about as unfounded as they come. Alleged to be lovers by who? Some internet genius?

The Los Angeles County Coroner found no evidence of suicide although they did investigate it as such. Ray was distraught over Mike’s passing and missed his dialysis. Was it on purpose? Who knows. Don't speak like you have FACTS when all you have is hearsay.

the way you read, you'd think his methods are vessel-bursting intense and use bone-crushing poundages. i'm sure that gets you a hell of a burn or something, but it doesn't change the fact that the tension being put on the muscle is laughably low.

That clip is misleading, isn't representative of the usual higher HIT intensity.

That's the biggest issue, not whether it might work for some. And that wasn't even full-out HIT intensity.

I think its a good technique to do every once in a while to "shock" some new growth into your muscles.

But then I think all the "niche" techniques can be useful.  High reps, low reps, high volume, power moves, partials, super slow, training same parts over multiple days, taking a week off to recover and rebuild...its seems to me that given a healthy diet, everything should give you some results.

his books are a great read.  I'd love to read stuff from Arthur Jones as well.

According to The New High Intensity Training: The Best Muscle-Building System You've Never Tried by Ellington Darden, Mike thought Arthur was God.

Literally.

And that he, Mike, was his son.

Goddamn. What a poor bastard. I've read stories of him being crazy but they didn't come from reputable sources but this is different. Wow, I can hardly believe it! I can see now why HIT didn't work for me. DAMN!

I wonder what a psychological analysis of Mike Mentzer would reveal. Perhaps he was indeed completely out of his fucking mind.

But still, what a writer he was! His books were amazing and nothing yet has ever motivated me as much as his books had!

This is a repost-----http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Mentzer

Following the loss at the 1980 Mr. Olympia, Mentzer reportedly ran into numerous problems. In the late 1970's Mike is was reported to have begun using amphetamines, claiming he only took them as an ergogenic aid to help facilitate a hectic lifestyle. Mentzer left his position at Weider Publications shortly after his loss at the Mr. Olympia contest, and suffered financially as a result. He did land a job in 1985 as editor of the newly launched Workout Magazine, however when that failed and that same year his father died, Mentzer reportedly suffered a mental breakdown.

According to Peter McGough, editor-in-chief of FLEX Magazine, stories began to surface of Menzter exhibiting some very erratic behaviour. Stories of him running naked through the streets, directing traffic, telling prophecies about the end of the world, being arrested by the police numerous times and even waiting for aliens to land were all published in magazines at one point or another. Popular bodybuilding writer Dan Duchaine even suggested that Menzter was drinking his own urine at the time. Mike denied this in a 2001 interview with Iron Man magazine. Nonetheless, according to McGough some of these stories are true.[1] Menzter was also regularly institutionalized between 1985 up until 1990, when he finally kicked his amphetamine habit. Drug free, Mike returned to training bodybuilders and writing for Ironman Magazine, and spent much of the 1990s regaining his stature in the bodybuilding industry.

Mentzer died on June 9, 2001. He was found dead in his apartment by his younger brother and fellow bodybuilder Ray Mentzer due to heart complications. Mentzer was reportedly a heavy user of methamphetamine for about a decade, and this was thought of as a contributing factor in his death. Two days later, his brother Ray also died in his sleep after complications from his long term battle with Berger's disease.

Jehovah is "God the Father"

Holy Spirit is "the Spirit of God"

all are ONE

Mike Mentzer was created in God's image. If he, in his final moments, gave accepted Jesus as his savior, Mike became a new creation....and a son of God. . .an heir to the Kingdom of God.

Okay...but Is it being used the way HE was teaching it?? I'll bet my last dollar that there isn't ONE person on this board who will believe that they'll get a big back or chest doing 2 or 3 movements - 2 sets a piece ...and then getting out of the gym in 20 minutes. the problem with MM's whole style of training is not that it was wrong.  it's that other peope-no offense to anyone-couldn't pull it off on a consistant enough basis to see gains.  It's awful hard to wrap your mind around going in there and totally destroying a muscle in 1 or 2 sets and walking out.  You might think you did it but chances are you didn't do it or take it as far as Mike would have had you do it.  It's like when people read the leg training routine that viator did at the colorado experiment and say "that doesn't look that hard"...they just don't get it.

His philosophies I found were backwards, forwards, upside down, inside out consistent and very difficult to refute.  I do not have the education to refute his principles and I would consider myself pretty educated.  Mentzer was a very smart man.  He was a follower of Ayn Rand's objectivism philosophy which I also find incredibly difficult to refute.  The 1980 Mr. Olympia ruined Mentzer.  He fell into a life of stress and drugs and never came out of it.  :-\

not true. mentzer wasnt as smart as he thought he was. he over complicated bodybuilding. he twisted his own mind into knots.

he was an intelligent guy in many ways tho. he liked philosophy but he was mentally flawed and turned to drugs. a weak physche combined with drugs led to mentzers weird behaviour in the mid and late 80s.

also the mr olympia loss in 1980 shouldnt affect a normal person to such a degree as it did. of course he lost his bodybuilding magazine in 84 i think..which sent him over the edge,

he was mentally flawed from childhood.

HIT is shit. some say it works, of course it does as you are stimulating muscle fibers but..there are way better methods.

no its not just my opinion

doing 1-2 sets per body part per week will put you in deconditioned state very fast. its not only bad for musclebuilding its also awful for functional capabilities.

also mentzer should have thought one step a head: "20sets to failure is too much. ok i do 1-2 sets to failure."

in reality something in the middle is better.

Yea, a zealot for The Lord Jesus Christ....and you didn't answer me. Show me the verses...because you canot you show yourself up richly to be a liar, and a deceiver.

The Bible reflects these cultural values :  racism, brutality, submissive to authority, intolerance, violence, misogony (hatred towards women), cruelity to animals, and the viloation of most of the basic human rights we have today.

This is too easy!!!

Leviticus 25:42,25:44-46 (NIV): "Because the Israelites are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt, they must not be sold as slaves ... Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.

Timothy 2:11-14 (NIV): A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.

Exodus 21:7 [KJV] And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. [NIV] If a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as menservants do.

Lev 15:19-24 [KJV] And if a woman have an issue (HER PERIOD), and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall be put apart seven days: and whosoever toucheth her shall be unclean until the even. 20 And every thing that she lieth upon in her separation shall be unclean: every thing also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. 21 And whosoever toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 22 And whosoever toucheth any thing that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even. 23 And if it be on her bed, or on any thing whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth it, he shall be unclean until the even. 24 And if any man lie with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean seven days; and all the bed whereon he lieth shall be unclean.

1 Peter 3:5-6 (NIV): For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master.

Numbers 31:14-18 (NIV): Moses was angry with the officers of the army--the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds--who returned from the battle. "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man."

Judges 21:12-22 (NIV): They found among the people living in Jabesh Gilead four hundred young women who had never slept with a man ... So the Benjamites returned at that time and were given the women of Jabesh Gilead who had been spared. But there were not enough for all of them ... the elders of the assembly said, "With the women of Benjamin destroyed, how shall we provide wives for the men who are left? The Benjamite survivors must have heirs," they said," so that a tribe of Israel will not be wiped out ... But look, there is the annual festival of the LORD in Shiloh, to the north of Bethel, and east of the road that goes from Bethel to Shechem, and to the south of Lebonah. So they instructed the Benjamites, saying, "Go and hide in the vineyards and watch. When the girls of Shiloh come out to join in the dancing, then rush from the vineyards and each of you seize a wife from the girls of Shiloh and go to the land of Benjamin. When their fathers or brothers complain to us, we will say to them, "Do us a kindness by helping them, because we did not get wives for them during the war ..."

Judges 19:24 (NIV): Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing ... the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, "Get up; let's go." But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home. When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel.

Isaiah 3:12-17 (NIV): Youths oppress my people, women rule over them. O my people, your guides lead you astray; they turn you from the path ... The LORD says, "The women of Zion are haughty, walking along with outstretched necks, flirting with their eyes, tripping along with mincing steps, with ornaments jingling on their ankles. Therefore the Lord will bring sores on the heads of the women of Zion; the LORD will make their scalps bald."

Genesis 22 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, "Abraham!" "Here I am," he replied. Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."
...
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, "Father?" "Yes, my son?" Abraham replied. "The fire and wood are here," Isaac said, "but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?"

Abraham answered, "God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son." And the two of them went on together. When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, "I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (NIV): If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death.

Kings 2:23-24 (NIV): From there Elisha went up to Bethel. As he was walking along the road, some youths came out of the town and jeered at him. "Go on up, you baldhead!" they said. "Go on up, you baldhead!" He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.

Matthew 12:46-49 (NIV): While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you." He replied to him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?" Pointing to his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers."

Genesis 38:6-10
Judah got a wife for Er, his firstborn, and her name was Tamar. But Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the LORD's sight; so the LORD put him to death. Then Judah said to Onan, "Lie with your brother's wife and fulfill your duty to her as a brother-in-law to produce offspring for your brother." But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so whenever he lay with his brother's wife, he spilled his semen on the ground to keep from producing offspring for his brother. What he did was wicked in the LORD's sight; so he put him to death also.

Genesis 22:2
Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about."

Exodus 2:11-12
One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
Exodus 2:29-30
At midnight the LORD struck down all the firstborn babies in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.
Exodus 35:2 [KJV] Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death. Lev 11:10 [KJV] And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you [NIV] But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scales --- whether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the water --- you are to detest.

Exodus 21:15-17Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to death.... Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.

Exodus 21:23-25 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

Exodus 22:18-20 Do not allow a sorceress to live. Whoever sacrifices to any god other than the LORD must be destroyed.

Exodus 31:15 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day must be put to death.

Exodus 32:27-28,35 Then he said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: `Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.' The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died ... And the LORD struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.

Leviticus 10:1-2 Aaron's sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the LORD, contrary to his command. So fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed them, and they died before the LORD.

Leviticus 10:6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, "Do not let your hair become unkempt, and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the LORD will be angry with the whole community.

Leviticus 20:9 If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to death.

Leviticus 20:13 If a man sleeps with his daughter-in-law, both of them must be put to death.

Leviticus 20:14 (Polygamy is acceptable, but not if you marry both a woman and her mother. If you commit that strange but victimless act, then you must die)

If a man marries both a woman and her mother, it is wicked. Both he and they must be burned in the fire.

Leviticus 21:9 If a priest's daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she disgraces her father; she must be burned in the fire.

Leviticus 23:27 The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present an offering made to the LORD by fire. Do no work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the LORD your God. Anyone who does not deny himself on that day must be cut off from his people. I will destroy from among his people anyone who does any work on that day.

Leviticus 24:13-14 Then the LORD said to Moses: "Take the blasphemer outside the camp. All those who heard him are to lay their hands on his head, and the entire assembly is to stone him."

Leviticus 26:7 You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall by the sword before you.

Leviticus 26:14-16,22,25,29-33 But if you will not listen to me and carry out all these commands, and if you reject my decrees and abhor my laws and fail to carry out all my commands and so violate my covenant, then I will do this to you: I will bring upon you sudden terror, wasting diseases and fever that will destroy your sight and drain away your life. You will plant seed in vain, because your enemies will eat it.
I will send wild animals against you, and they will rob you of your children, destroy your cattle and make you so few in number that your roads will be deserted.
And I will bring the sword upon you to avenge the breaking of the covenant. When you withdraw into your cities, I will send a plague among you, and you will be given into enemy hands.
You will eat the flesh of your sons and the flesh of your daughters. I will destroy your high places, cut down your incense altars and pile your dead bodies on the lifeless forms of your idols, and I will abhor you. I will turn your cities into ruins and lay waste your sanctuaries, and I will take no delight in the pleasing aroma of your offerings. I will lay waste the land, so that your enemies who live there will be appalled. I will scatter you among the nations and will draw out my sword and pursue you. Your land will be laid waste, and your cities will lie in ruins.

Leviticus 19:19 he makes it a sin to cross-breed animals, plant two kinds of seed in one field, or wear a cotton-polyester shirt.

Genesis 19:24-26 Then the LORD rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah--from the LORD out of the heavens. Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, including all those living in the cities--and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot's wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.
BTW in the story of Sodom and Gomorar, God killed innocent people, children and animals with thunder bolts because he was angry about rape, not gay dudes.

This was too easy!!!

Leviticus 27:29 No person set for human sacrifice may be ransomed; he must be put to death.

Isaiah 13:15-16 Whoever is captured will be thrust through; all who are caught will fall by the sword. Their infants will be dashed to pieces before their eyes; their houses will be looted and their wives ravished.

Isaiah 9:19-20 By the wrath of the LORD Almighty the land will be scorched and the people will be fuel for the fire; no one will spare his brother. On the right they will devour, but still be hungry; on the left they will eat, but not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of his own offspring.

Isaiah 34:2-5,8 For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of retribution, to uphold Zion's cause.

Isaiah 66:15-16,24 See, the LORD is coming with fire, and his chariots are like a whirlwind; he will bring down his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. For with fire and with his sword the LORD will execute judgment upon all men, and many will be those slain by the LORD.

This was too easy!!!

i'm curious but lazy,

is that the old testament or the new?

also...what has all that got to do with mike being god?
Title: Re: Mike Mentzer thought he was the Son of God

So what he thought he was the son of god.  Alexander the Great thought he WAS God, and there wasn't a man on the planet to tell him different.  He was the first man to carry the title "Great" and here 2300 years later we smirk or make a snide comment when in reality we will die the masses of anonymous peons we are while Alexander will never be forgotten.

Personally I think the mental health of America is deteriorating and its our fault for scapegoating the susceptible or mentally vulnerable.

I think if you want something different in regards to MM you would be served a few ways.

Firstly, you could review his history with Arthur Jones, and his help in the development of Nautilus. Groundbreaking stuff at the time.

Secondly, you could study his fascination with Ayn Rand, an author and the originator of the philosphy of objectivism. It is a philosophy based on reason. She wrote two great novels, "Atlas Shrugged" and "The Fountainhead". One is a story of "the perfect man", the other a great book on the modern day free market economy.

You might also realize that unlike the average bodybuilder who injests massive juice, eats a lot and then sleeps all day, MM tried to understand the science behind bodybuilding and push the envelope.

I am not a huge MM fan but he is worthy of mention and you asked what could be said that hasn't been said already.....

mike made the biggest contribution to bodybuilding training. he has the only complete theory as to the right way to train (it is an actual professional thesis/ argument) all other methods are indefinite eg- the volume method is not precise, people advocating in specific various volume etc, eg- weider principles. his method was complete and exact.

She was a mediocre writer, at best, and her 'philosophy,' such as it is, has largely been dismissed for years as cultish and insular, not to mention hideously selfish. Go to any philospophy prof at any respected uni and ask about it. He/she'll just sadly roll her eyes at you, pat you on the shoulder, and wish you the best, maybe ask you if you need some spare change.

His mental health progressively declined all throughout his life. Soon before he died he was said to have been admitted to a mental institution where he had the biggest meltdown known to man. Being in complete denial of his own madness, he tirelessly fought to escape day after day, hour after hour before he was given a lobotomy. The lobotomy caused his brain functions to cease altogether almost immediately after surgury and he died. His brother Ray had a meltdown 2 days later after learning of his brother's death and took a swan dive off the roof of his house.

He definitely was ahead of his time!  Check out his site:
http://www.mikementzer.com/tips.html

This passage stuck out to me:
"I eventually realized the vast level of overtraining that even HEAVY DUTY was creating in advanced trainers with extremely efficient neuromuscular pathways.  In these unique, highly trained individuals, even most abbreviated, high intensity training programs may be too much.  For these individuals, I've developed a highly advanced form of Heavy Duty.  It involves the use of just two exercises, performed at opposite ends of the calender year.  One all out set of Nautilus pull-overs, completed to failure, along with forced reps in early May, and one all out set of Nautilus Leg Press, completed to failure, with 1/4 reps to positive failure in early December."

As much as Mike Mentzer was famous for his body, he was equally famous for his mind, and his original thinking... having this in mind, it's interesting to see the thoughts of Swedish Viking...

Here are some quotes:

In a thread, about, you guessed it Mike Mentzer (this is getting spooky) here is what Swedish Viking has to say about his training... can you say INTENSE?

"The first time I actually did a HIT session with the intensity of a real Hitter, I realized that one set to negative failure is exactly what I need to stimulate growth. "

"I was pretty much always the hardest training person in whatever gym I went to. "

And when it comes to dieting... Swedish Viking, just as Mike Mentzer, is not afraid to think outside the box...

"I drink anywhere from 8-24 mostly whole always raw eggs daily.  I say mostly whole because sometimes I only drink the yolk-never just the white-that is a total waste."  :o :o :o

Mike... I mean Swedish Viking on training:

"Re: how many of you finish your workouts under 30 MINUTES?
Mine are done in roughly 9-11 min."

Now if that isn't balls to the wall, straight to the point INTENSE training, then I don't know what is!

"I don't rest at all.  One exercise is a pre-exhaust for the next."

No rest?! AT ALL!? This guy is an absolute animal!

Why not? It's interesting. I don't know whos gimmick you are but its getting pretty tiresome with 3-4 unknown people making the same type of comments. Like puppets on a string following me around.

Because it sounds boring.

Yes. Swedish Viking doesn't believe in shaving. And what real man does? I think allowing at least chest hair would be a huge benefit to the sport of Bodybuilding. As well as promoting facial hair. It would make up for oil and girly thongs, balance it out.

Shaving is for the weak.  The only reason you should own a razor is so you can have a moustache if you want a change from having a beard.

Classic drug look: lots of vascularity, lacking in cuts & refinement. That, some softness and relatively narrow shoulders with a wide waist ruined his chances in 1980 when he wasn't as good as he should've been.

The moustache was a sign of the times. The Life of Southern California in the 70's, a great time for the ones lucky enough to enjoy it. Less government restrictions, open land, artists and creative people all over, free love and sex and a beautiful natural environment.

Too bad whats happened to it. Overrun with greedy developers with no concern for the environment. Selfish rich parents with spoiled children that only care about the insides of their McMansions and have left the rest of Southern California landscape in miles of ugly highways, tastless overcrowded housing develpments, and shopping malls selling everything you can imagine and never need. There is no more open land along the oceans unless it is a state park. There is no enviornmental movement or any attempt to develope the land more responsibly.

It must break the hearts of the iron legends that had a chance to enjoy the free Southern California life style, the one the Beach Boys sang about.

Funny thing is Arnold doesn't give a shit either. He has sold out and still selling out Southern California.

Long live the moustache.

You're interpreting it that way but in fact Arnold always had a hanger-on with him to protect him, in this case Waller, because Arnold was a pussy. Lots of talk about psyching opponents, much of it BS that obviously worked judging from the numbers who still believe it to this day. Mike obviously didn't buy it, this is the correct analysis:

the way you read, you'd think his methods are vessel-bursting intense and use bone-crushing poundages. i'm sure that gets you a hell of a burn or something, but it doesn't change the fact that the tension being put on the muscle is laughably low.

Ok loony, you obviously have not grasped it or used the techniques.

Paul Sr get a lot of respect because of that 'stache, let me tell you, it's the leader of the pack thing.

I'm sure Paul Jr can get quite the 'stache himself, but he's not even going there because it won't match Sr's.

no its not just my opinion

doing 1-2 sets per body part per week will put you in deconditioned state very fast. its not only bad for musclebuilding its also awful for functional capabilities.

also mentzer should have thought one step a head: "20sets to failure is too much. ok i do 1-2 sets to failure."

in reality something in the middle is better.

I've just read this thread from start to finish and I end up here an enlightened man. I was inspired, motivated, entertained, amused, educated, and slightly abused by the haters, who don't appreciate Mike because of their total lack of intellectual capability. girls.

Bluto is a saint. Here's a Mentzer fan who's dedicated! The memory of Mike will NEVER die here at Getbig! When I reach the appropriate age, I will join you and the rest of the world as one of the mustache people! In Mike's great memory, no doubt.

Mike Menzter is a legend. A quirky genius with a body that was a chiseled masterpiece, who developed unorthodox training methods, which may or not work well, depending on the individual. But Mike was a blessed man, both physically and mentally.

MIKE MENTZER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that's all very nice but hold up a bit.

mike mentzer didn't come up with the theory of brevity and high intensity. he was a disciple of arthur jones and simply copied the jones ideology verbatim.

Mike was incredibly intelligent but I'm not so sure bodybuilding can be debated in terms of the philosophy of objectivism as he contested so passionately.

Here is an EXCELLENT DVD if you want to see Mike's intelligence shine though.  It's too bad that meth took control of him, as many drugs do to those not strong enough to fight them.

mike was a hypocrite in a lot of ways.

it wasn't his training philosophy that sucked (btw it wasn't his it was arthur jones') it was the way he arrogantly dismissed any contention to his philosophy. he accused others like arnold of having a closed mind but he wasn't receptive to ideas at all and i think the comment by mike that Matt C pointed out just typifies his hypocrisy.

i could also point out many further examples of his hypocrisy eg. training: he obsessively advocated the 1 set hit principle simples, yet he performed much more volume in his own training at the time.

i liked his individualism and integrity but the fact is, HE DID NOT INVENT HIT/HEAVY DUTY/WHATEVER ELSE YOU WANT TO CALL IT, ARTHUR JONES DID.

well arthur advocates to work out three times a week i believe. mike advocates one workout every 5-7 days and as u get advanced u add more rest days. also he advocates only 4-5 sets per workout.

I personally have not read arthur jones materials but i read and heard mike distinguish the differences of where he disagress with arthur and went in his own direction, he also made a lecture which is recorded both on dvd and in mp3 where he goes into detail about such things.

even dorian is not a true h.i.t disciple because he uses different rep speed and more sets. (The use of a quick rep speed with h.i.t principles is a recipe for injury)

sounds like maybe you should read more arthur jones stuff then.

jones was the original thinker, not mentzer. jones advocated less training with high intensity along with more recovery because of that higher intensity. he was also the first to say that, as a trainee becomes stronger he makes greater inroads into his recovery and therefore requires even more rest ie twice weekly/less often.

There is no way on this earth the majority of people could get any sort of decent physique whatsoever (muscle wise), from 1 workout every 5-7 days. You would have to have the best genetics to make much gains from that programme

Really? How long have you been training? I would imagine beginners could as their bodies arent used to training, but for more advanced lifters sitting round for 6 days a week just doesnt make sense to me. Obviously you need rest, but i dont think many people could get anywhere near their potential training less than 3 times per week

Ive always read, from Mentzer's articles or proponents of his training philosophy about how HIT is the only scientifically sound way to train.  Unfortunately I haven't read any real scientific studies to back that up. The much vaunted Colorado experiment inst what you would call scientifically sound.  There was  no control subjects or strict methodology used.  A lot of the training philosophy seemed to depend on generalizations about human physiology such as each person is relatively the same and that stimulation applied will be relatively the same, recuperation times are relatively the same and if a person is not benefiting from training the automatic response is to decrease stimulation.  It doesn't seem to take into account genetic variations in the human population such as recuperative variances and hormonal makeup.  This is my initial opinion of HIT, though it might change as I look at it further.

exactly.

viator was a genetic monster and jones was smart enough to realise that he was the perfect candidate.

he hadn't trained for quite a while and casey and arthur had a previous trainee-trainer relationship where arthur knew exactly what buttons to push, how to feed him, how to hormonise him, recovery, motivation, etc, etc. he also had seen casey make massive improvements in a short space of time before. casey was arthur's frankenstein, he thrived on brutally hard work, trained like an animal and, as pointed out, had nothing to do but train, eat, hormonise, sleep, rinse, repeat.

jones knew that casey was his golden goose, he even had assistants carry casey from each exercise apparatus when he was done.

all casey had to do for that whole time was GET BIG and he had every tool in the box to do it with.

hey, yeah well i trained for abit over two years very well, took a long lay off and came back with the emphasis on fat loss. SO i guess up until now my many of my gains have been a partial result of regaining muscle. but for example, my calves have grown muscle i never even saw before which i credit to the high intensity approach to them. so i guess the real test will be how my gains go over the next several months.

the thought about advanced bodybuilders he takes it like this - the stresses imposed are much greater for advanced bodybuilders and it make s a bigger inroad into their recovery ability ( eg- concentration curling 20 pounds versus an advanced lifter using 80 pounds causes more stress). he advocates that advanced users should use more advanced intensity techniques such as rest-pause, negative failure, static failure.
he says they need more rest because of the stress and they are closer to reaching their critical point of overtraining from stress and also their upper genetic potential.

hello, jones was saying 3 times per week when mike was TRAINING 6 days a week. the lowest frequency mike did in his competitive years was 4 times per week and that was ENTIRELY influenced by jones.

jones DID alter his belief here and mike followed. mike followed jones' ideas on higher intensity making greater inroads and thus requiring more recovery. obviously, it was only natural, given jones' theorum that the frequency would come down, but make no mistake (and anyone that has read arthur jones knows this) jones was the originator of the hit system, mike was merely one of the many followers.

that's my point, he didn't expand on anything.

the problem is, there are too many variables ie sex, age, height, weight, hormones, motivation, recovery, drugs, ethnic origin, leverages, rep cadence, the list goes on and on and on, believe me, i could be here all day.

imo, mentzers books are more a case study on his sanity than anything else. one absolute - BULLSHIT.

Jones theory does make alot of sense.  Especially the need for more rest as you become advanced in your genetic limit.   The central nervous system is heavily taxed by resistance training.

Ive always tried to listen to my body by following a basic 3on 2off plan.  But that quicly turns to a 2on 2off and eventually to a 3-4 times a week......

As the weeks go on (about 8 weeks)  I need a week off, and usually come back stronger and better for it.

As a drug free trainer, i have attained alot of mass simply from my staying away from the gym when needed.

if u use the methods like positive failure, negative failure, and static, as u get more advanced u can get to the point of working out only once every seven days, cos it taxes ur central nervous system so much u dont want to be in the gym earlier than that. those who have done h.i.t will know wat i mean.

yes i know, but how does anyone know, given the aforementioned variables, what measure of intensity/inroads into recovery and how long to rest?

what exactly defines and advanced trainee? someone that benches 400lbs for reps? what if one person does 300lbs with an 8 second negative and positive and another subject does 250lbs with a 30 second negative and 27 second second positive? what about if you get someone 5' 0 doing 10 rep squats with 500lb vs a 6'5 guy doing squats with 400lbs for 10, who's more advanced?

i could go on and on adnauseum, but i guess the only real way to tell how much recovery, etc you need is to experiment. where mentzer's theorum is flawed is that he doesn't account for the variables and simply DICTATES one absolute ie everyone trains the same way regardless of variables.

i feel ya beast,

i think advanced means ur upper limits of ur genetic potential.

all i know is that when i use the high intensity principles, my body doesnt feel like goin to the gym for 6-7 days, its very draining. its hard to explain, i never felt like this doing the normal training styles. but the calve results have impressed me the most.

but i must make it clear, i am on very low calories, at 220 pounds i am only eating like 1,100 - 1,300 calories per day simply because i am unhappy with my stored fat on my body.

yes, but who actually knows what their genetic potential is?

it's defeatist terminology and perhaps a bit of a cop out ie who would have thought in 1920 that a human being could carry the muscle mass of ronnie coleman?

i know one may argue, "but that's drugs", however genetic potential by definition does not mean, 'to the exclusion of ergonenic aids'.

in any case, it appears that you're working harder and analysing the results which are probably the 2 most important aspects towards progressive training.

the hardest part of training is motivation imo. if you can stay motivated and positive you will get far greater results. it's bloody hard to keep working brutally hard week in week out, especially if you're doing it alone, but the guys that can definitely get the best results, drugs aside.

it's good to see you're getting the results and i hope you continue doing what matters ie busting your ass in the gym.  ;D

It doesn't seem to take into account genetic variations in the human population such as recuperative variances and hormonal makeup.

Mike said the stimulus that causes the best growth is one way high intensity is one - h.i.t

he said ur response to that stimulus is purely genetic and the amount of muscle u can eventually build is pre-determined (but that ur genetic potential cant be realised till u actually train and explore that potential). he had 1,000's of clients and their results illustrated this.

mentzer wasnt as smart as people believe..or as smart as he believed himself to be.

arnold was smarter when it came to bodybuilding in practice and real world problems (he had street smarts)

arnold didnt try to project himself as the thinking mans bodybuilder but in reality his instincts and ability to borrow information from other bodybuilders took him to the top.

mentzer used many useless analogies and metaphors in his training articles. for those without a critical mind the articles can be seen as smart and convincing..but inreality they are mostly bullshit.

we're all part of the bodybuilding brotherhood that is worldwide... everywhere you go and find a brother in need you reach out and help.. like you do in the gym spotting... you also spot your fellow brothers of iron outside of the gym and at msg boards...

let the brotherhood live on and one... because we are a rare creed... a tribe of warriors of old... connected to eachother by our love for the iron and our great staches...

i think mentzer was pretty intelligent, but i also think there's many kinds of intelligence. for example, musical intelligence, logical intelligence, social intelligence, etc. therefore i'd say mike had a high degree of logical intelligence, but arnold... no he's a freak of social intelligence, in the genius range!!!! by the way, pretty much all of the greatest con artists have had a Superior degree of social intelligence ;) but, i'm not saying arnold is a con man...
