A prominent doctor at Mount Sinai Hospital is the target of an NYPD investigation after a 22-year-old patient accused him of knocking her out with morphine and ejaculating on her face, the Daily News has learned.
Dr. David Newman — an emergency physician described as a leading voice for health care reforms — is wanted for questioning in the alleged sex assault, sources said Wednesday.
The 45-year-old Iraq War veteran has already been barred from seeing patients as the investigation plays out, hospital officials said.
“We are aware of an allegation that has been made against one of our physicians,” the hospital said in a statement. “This is a matter under investigation and we are fully cooperating with the appropriate authorities. We take this matter very seriously and are conducting our own internal investigation.”
Sources described the Jan. 11 incident in sickening detail.
The patient showed up at Mount Sinai Hospital shortly before 10:30 p.m. complaining of pain in her right shoulder. She was taken to a private room inside the emergency room where nurses gave her two pain pills and a shot for inflammation. Because the woman was still in pain, a nurse administered morphine. The patient was then told to change into a gown for X-rays.
The woman claims she removed her shirt and bra, but kept her pants on. The woman was still dressed in the gown when Newman walked into her room following the X-ray.
“I’m going to give you a shot of morphine,” the doctor told her, according to sources familiar with the woman’s claims.
The patient says she told the doctor that a nurse had already administered the drug, but she then felt a burning sensation in her arm that convinced her that Newman gave her more morphine anyway.
The visit turned creepy when the patient, while the doctor was examining her back, told him she felt pain on the right side of her chest. Newman started fondling her breasts, she alleged, according to sources.
The doctor then moved her bed away from the wall and positioned himself with his back toward the patient. The woman heard the sounds of someone masturbating — and then felt semen on her face, she claimed.
All the while, she was unable to move because she was heavily medicated, sources said.
Newman, after allegedly finishing his dirty deed, used a blanket to wipe off the substance from her face.
A nurse later came into the room and found the woman in a blacked-out state.
“What is wrong with her? Why is she like this?” the patient heard the nurse ask a staffer, sources said.
The nurse, joined by another physician, Dr. Andrew Jagoda, roused the woman and asked what happened. The patient was drifting in and out of consciousness and unable to respond, she claimed, according to sources.
Once the woman woke up, she walked into the bathroom and spotted what appeared to be semen on her face and bare chest. She told police she wiped it off with a gown, which she then placed in a plastic bag along with the bedding — presumably to preserve as evidence, sources said.
When Jagoda returned to the room a short while later, the patient described what happened and said she wanted to go home. Jagoda asked the woman if she wanted him to call the police. She said she wanted to speak with his supervisor, sources said.
Jagoda then dropped a bombshell — his supervisor was Newman, the doctor she accused of sexual abuse. Horrified, the woman gathered her belongings and left the hospital, sources said.
The doctor has published a book called “Hippocrates Shadow: Secrets from the House of Medicine,” in which he lampoons what he sees as a growing disconnect between doctors and their patients.
Newman served as a major in the U.S. Army Reserves. In 2005, he was deployed to Iraq where he received an Army Commendation Medal, according to his author’s note.
Newman, who was the subject of a 2009 medical malpractice suit that was dismissed by a judge, didn’t return requests for comment.
A woman, who spoke through the door at his home in Montclair, N.J., had little to say.
“Sorry,” she said. “Nothing happened.”

The young man wanted to be a doctor and his "crime" is obviously a reaction to the prohibitively high medical school tuition. He took matters into his own hands and I think he should be viewed as a hero. A shining example for his strong will and his can-do attitude. He didn't let anything stop him from achieving his goal of being a pussy doctor. New York (CNN)A woman who accused a prominent New York doctor and Iraq War veteran of sexual abuse says in a lawsuit that DNA evidence will prove her allegations.
David Newman, 45, director of clinical research in emergency medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan, was arrested last month and accused of drugging, groping and masturbating on a female patient in January, according to a criminal complaint. He was also accused of groping another patient in September.
His attorney, Susan Necheles, said Newman has pleaded not guilty. A court appearance was moved Tuesday to April 18.
"As to the lawsuit, Dr. Newman denies all of her allegations," Necheles said in a statement. "We believe that the witnesses and other evidence will show that her version of facts is just not the truth."
The civil lawsuit filed Monday identified the accuser as Aja Newman, who is not related to the doctor.
Aja Newman went to the Mount Sinai emergency room with shoulder pain on the night of January 11, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit said David Newman gave the patient morphine even though "she had already been administered pain medication" and that -- "sedated, though conscious" -- she heard and saw the doctor masturbating and ejaculating on her face and breasts.
Aja Newman called police after leaving the emergency room, and DNA evidence collected later at Harlem Hospital Center matched that of the doctor, according to the lawsuit.
The lawsuit, which seeks unspecified monetary damages, names other emergency room staff it says "failed to enforce internal policies" and alleges the hospital "negligently" hired, trained, retained and supervised David Newman and others.
Hospital has suspended doctor
Newman is charged with first- and third-degree sexual abuse and forcible touching, according to the complaint.
He was a major in the U.S. Army Reserves at a combat hospital in Baghdad.
In a statement Tuesday, Mount Sinai Hospital said, "The physician is no longer employed at Mount Sinai. ... Since this is a police matter and under litigation, we cannot provide further details."
At the time of Newman's arrest, the hospital said it was investigating the charges and "fully cooperating" with authorities.
"We take this matter very seriously," a hospital statement said. "The health and safety of our patients are of our utmost concern."
What the complaint says
According to the criminal complaint, a 29-year-old patient in the January case told investigators the doctor gave her morphine even though she had already received a dose of the drug from a nurse.
The woman told investigators "she felt a burning sensation, felt very drowsy, and her eyes closed," the criminal complaint said. She told investigators she heard Newman masturbating and felt him ejaculating on her. She said she was unable to move or communicate, according to the complaint.
On September 22, Newman allegedly groped a 22-year-old woman who went to Mount Sinai Hospital with a cold, police said. Newman allegedly grabbed her breasts under her shirt, according to a criminal complaint.
Newman is the author of "Hippocrates' Shadow," which says the doctor "sees a lack of candid communication between doctors and patients, a disregard for the healing power of the doctor-patient bond ... and, ultimately, a disconnect between doctors and their Hippocratic Oath," according to the back cover. It was first published in 2008.

In a statement Tuesday, Mount Sinai Hospital said, "The physician is no longer employed at Mount Sinai. ... Since this is a police matter and under litigation, we cannot provide further details."
At the time of Newman's arrest, the hospital said it was investigating the charges and "fully cooperating" with authorities.
"We take this matter very seriously," a hospital statement said. "The health and safety of our patients are of our utmost concern."
What the complaint says
According to the criminal complaint, a 29-year-old patient in the January case told investigators the doctor gave her morphine even though she had already received a dose of the drug from a nurse.
The woman told investigators "she felt a burning sensation, felt very drowsy, and her eyes closed," the criminal complaint said. She told investigators she heard Newman masturbating and felt him ejaculating on her. She said she was unable to move or communicate, according to the complaint.
On September 22, Newman allegedly groped a 22-year-old woman who went to Mount Sinai Hospital with a cold, police said. Newman allegedly grabbed her breasts under her shirt, according to a criminal complaint.
Newman is the author of "Hippocrates' Shadow," which says the doctor "sees a lack of candid communication between doctors and patients, a disregard for the healing power of the doctor-patient bond ... and, ultimately, a disconnect between doctors and their Hippocratic Oath," according to the back cover. It was first published in 2008.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A former emergency room doctor at Mount Sinai Hospital has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually abusing four female patients — in one instance drugging a patient defenseless and ejaculating on her — according to multiple reports.
David Newman, a 46-year-old resident of Montclair N.J., is facing two years in prison, three years post-release supervision and will register as a sex offender after pleading guilty to one count of first-degree sex abuse and four counts of third-degree sex abuse, a spokesman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office told Patch.
"What I did was awful and disgusting, and I’m sorry," Newman said during Monday's sentencing, the New York Times reported. "I’m sorry to everyone involved. I’m sorry to physicians everywhere and patients everywhere."
But Newman's apologies could not mend the psychological wounds he inflicted on his victims. On of the doctor's victims, Aja Newman (no relation), said Monday that she still suffers from the violation, according to the Times.

The former doctor was indicted by the Manhattan District Attorney on the same counts in March 2016 after a victim accused him of a January 2016 assault, according to the DA's office. After the first victim accused Newman, three more women levied accusations against the doctor, according to the DA.
Newman abused the four women, ages 18-29, in the emergency room of the Upper East Side's Mount Sinai Hospital between August 2015 and January 2016. Three of the women were abused while seeking treatment for illnesses such as a headache, cold and rash between August and October 2015, according to the DA.
The fourth victim accused Newman of administering her with drugs, leaving her defenseless, and ejaculating on her face during a January 2016 visit to the emergency room for shoulder pain, according to the DA.
"As alleged in this indictment, four young women who came to the hospital for medical treatment were sexually abused by the very doctor entrusted with their care," said District Attorney Cyrus Vance in March.
