Title: Pain free....finally!!!
Post by: Coach is Back! on May 03, 2017, 09:27:56 PM
It's been over a year since I blew both of shoulders out while getting ready for a PL meet. For three weeks I couldn't sleep, had a hard time raising my arms overhead and basically my biceps tendons (both) were screwed with one completely out of its groove, pain for at least 5 months was a consistent 8 on a 1-10. I've done some bench since but mostly BB stuff never going over 185 for about 5 but haven't benched in about months. Before I blew out my shoulders I was consistently benching 425 and on a good day 445 with a best of 465. I just turned 53 then.

Today might have changed things. I was messing around demonstrating correct bench technique to my kids. I felt ZERO pain at 155 where I would normally feel pain, kicked it up to 185 for 5 zero pain, 225 for 5 zero pain, 275 for 5 that went up as easy as the 225 again, zero pain. I didn't test the waters after that but 315 would have been easy, 365 for a single without a doubt. I turn 55 in August....new goal is 365 at least on my birthday.

Did you ever go to the doctor or physical therapist for this?

I would avoid bench press forever
Just use machines and dumbells mate.

What was the diagnosis and treatment?

G1 tears in both biceps tendons. Non surgical. The usual. Rest. Anti-inflammatories, etc We have a Physical Therapist on staff that would push the tendon back in the groove when it slipped out.

I have seen those tear at powerlifting meets and it is nasty to say the least. A buddy of mine was pulling 700 in the 220's and it just snapped and rolled up.  I know you have come across this too so be careful.

For whatever reason I can't deadlift worth a shit, I actually hate deadlifting but bench/squat have are my strong points.

thats great news!! took me over 9 months after injuring my shoulder to get back to bench pressing pain free. I hope your doing a lot of warm up sets as you start back up the benching. I do  8 warm up sets each time, for bench or incline bench. really gets the blood flowing before
I hit my 4 heavy sets.  just turned 60, hitting 315 for 10  :) :) :) :)

After 14 months of shoulder injury pain, never going over 135 for more than 3 reps, today I was somehow able to easily bench 302 for 17 reps.  It must be the alignment of Niburu and Big Hammy.

Your body is telling you something. As I crossed over 40, the explosive movements stopped. No dynamic days with the lighter weights either. These days it is 6-10 reps, 3 up, 3 down. Full control. Don't care at all about the weight used. Too many older guys in the gym quitting due to injuries. Good luck with the recovery.

Had to stop bench pressing 10 years ago. Turned to dumbells. Worked for 6-7 years, palms facing eachother.
Now i can only do reverse bench pressing. Once you sort it's mechanics it feels great, and totally removes delt/rotator cuff stress. You start feelling some bicep tension though.

I haven`t trained in months due to a shoulder injury......it`s just now starting to feel better so I`ll be back in the gym soon.

Congrats Joe............we need to go a bit lighter as we get older.  ;)

I hurt mine doing 3 X 3 on inclines......I dropped benching years ago.

I know how to position a seat. The starting point on a Hammer Strength is jamming yourself in where your hands are a little below your chest starting the movement at the bottom. It's fucks with shoulders. At least mine

I feel you on the HS incline.  I think the movement itself once out of the bottom of the rep is a good solid range of motion that contracts my chest; although, the initial movement when you're jammed into the low position messes with my shoulders (as you noted).  The ideal situation would be a foot lever that allows you to push the weight forward to start or a better design in the handles that allows you to bring them forwards or backwards.  Maybe a fixed yet moveable pin in each handle that slips in and out of a hole/groove that allows you to customize and lock the start position in place.  The fixed setting has caused me injury before.  I can easily press 10+ plates for reps on HS incline, but getting out of that rock bottom portion of the rep....it's 50/50 sometimes LOL.  Only thing I can do to remedy the situation is a get a spotter to help get the weight beyond my chest so I can start the movement if I'm not feeling comfortable that day.

Probably a little of both. Older you get the more frequent the injuries. Just need to practice what I preach a little more but after training PL using no machines that isolates body parts then using it because I wanted to add it in that day is totally on me. If I hadn't I would have been fine.

Coach, did Zillotchs joke really go over your head?

He's laughing because on the one hand, you said you got injured training. Then, on the other hand, you're trying to teach people how to lift properly. The joke is how can you teach someone else how to lift properly when you're getting injured yourself.

Get it now? ???  ??? ???

Meaning he should explain what the big joke was between me having two injuries in 40 YEARS and being almost 15 years apart as to me teaching someone how to lift or maybe that went over your head

I recommend oxycodone for pain. Although my new favourite is hydromorphone. Both feel SO good.

They say dedicated exercise is difficult for the average person, that most people quit. But there's the reverse dedication to refrain from it when you're injured, and to accept setbacks. Cause you can end up screwing yourself even more.

Honestly, this is great news. Just be careful not to over do it. Always respect your limits.

What does trump have to do with you being stupid? Your obsessive man worship of trump is beyond weird.

Coach, why are you threatening Fuzzy Nuts?

He's just slinging talk on getbig.

Its really unbecoming to threaten someone. I mean, it sounded like a threat to me. I don't know.

I don't get threatened by anyone on here, I get annoyed by gimmicks that stalk. He does, was it a threat? Let's see how much longer he has before he gets 86'd then you can decide.

I've read many back posts of several members ( C is B ) among them. He does seem to have statements get under his skin and he reacts quickly. He seems very insecure.

Yes, Coach misunderstood. He acknowledged threatening Fuzzy Nuts.

I wonder if Coach is going to get his athletes to go after Fuzzy Nuts.

Kicked out

Well, according to the Urban Dictionary (for what's worth it..), it means a 'bit' more than that:

To get rid of, originally for killing someone. The phrase "80 miles out and 6 feet under" was reserved for someone who had to dig their own grave 80 miles from civilization and then get shot execution-style. All terms for 86'd originated from this, be it alcohol or eliminating.

"It's supposed that Jimmy Hoffa was 86'd under the endzone of Giants Stadium."

Coach, where did I say it was a physical threat?

I didn't state that it was a physical threat either. Maybe youre going to get your athletes to find Fuzzy Nuts and sit down and have a talk with him.

Where did I say that you were going to send your athletes to specifically physically attack Fuzzy Nuts? Please, point out where I said that.

Thanks, Coach.

Well, it was surely implied. Why else would ask would you ask if I was going to send my athletes?

I learned it from casino gambling. 86'ed means to get kicked out or barred from a joint.
