Title: It's black history month again so it begs the question..........
Post by: Pray_4_War on February 07, 2018, 04:44:49 PM
What are we celebrating?  This is a serious question and not an attempt to troll.  What is "black history"?  Give me some really good examples.  Deeds, inventions, accomplishments.  The big stuff, things that are worthy of being recognized for an entire month every year.  Like, the top 10.  The foundation of black history is..............what?

Often when I see things on television that purport to honor black history they come at me with some really obscure meaningless shit.  Sometimes it has to do with sports or the arts, but mostly it has to do with the civil rights movement.  Dr King, Rosa Parks, etc.  That's great but it doesn't have much relevance to anyone who isn't black.  Help me understand.  The cynic in me wonders if it isn't just some white guilt attempt to pacify African Americans and build up their fragile self esteem.  Educate me.  Tell me something I don't already know.  Make it make sense.

Cotton & peanut butter.

Google we wuz inventors n shieet

"But many people have been credited with the title of peanut-butter-inventor, among them George Washington Carver. However, he did not invent peanut butter; instead he promoted more than 300 uses for peanuts, among other crops such as soy beans and sweet potatoes."

Find out the inventor of the cotton gin was a white man.

(http://www.slate.com/content/dam/slate/blogs/the_slatest/2017/02/02/eli_whitney_inventor_of_the_cotton_gin_wasn_t_black_but_here_s_why_so_many/170203_eli.jpg.CROP.promo-xlarge2.jpg)

"First things first: Whitney was white. He is not a mysterious figure. He was born in 1765 in Massachusetts to a wealthy farming family, he went to Yale, he married Jonathan Edwards’ granddaughter, and he died in 1825. Portraits composed during his own lifetime confirm that he was, indeed, a white guy.

But it appears that thousands, maybe millions, of Americans have grown up believing otherwise. There seems to be no geographical locus for the misinformation. Commenters from Georgia, California, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, Kansas, Florida, and Massachusetts insisted online on Wednesday they had been taught in school that Whitney was black."

I've heard of the peanut guy.  I think peanut butter is delicious, I really enjoy that shit.

That said, I don't think of the invention of peanut butter as being very historic.(if you can even call it an invention)  We'd all be just fine without it.  It's nice to have.

Where's the big stuff?  Epic, historic shit that changed the world........or at least the country..........that doesn't center around simply being black.  Like Frederick Douglas, for example, is a very famous black guy.  What's he famous for?  He was an abolitionist.  He's famous for being against the enslavement of.....you guessed it.....black people.

There no true “Native Americans” because everyone came here from somewhere else 😁

That being said, most Indian tribes were wiped out or settled on reservations where they get drunk every day (Take a drive through a US Indian reservation and they are ghetto)

The only successful Indians run casinos with the help of the mob, lol

The whole thing is a joke. Nobody gives a shit about black history month except guilt ridden white Libs and even they aren’t sincere. Anyone who looks at it objectively sees that blacks are overrepresented in jails and welfare rolls and under represented in high-level jobs. There isn’t a single predominantly black area of the country that anyone would want to visit voluntarily.

I think that when you view things from a certain lens a thing like Black History month seem meaningless. You are viewing from the point of view in which buildings, architecture, writings, etc. are the only things worthy of admiration. Those developments/advancement in human history are amazing for sure. If you attempt to view history/humanity from a different lens you can see the greatness in the African contributions to all music, dance, cuisine, etc.

In regards to African American history you can admire the work of the slaves that were a large part of financial backbone of the American economy (specially the Southern States) in a period where financial stability facilitated America's development into a succesful country. Yes these people were enslaved but as human beings they still made a contribution to America. Also take a look at African American contributions to the war efforts of America from the Revolution to our current foreign entanglements. I think there is a lot to celebrate.

If you can not see this then just celebrate the African American contribution of penetrating fine American hoes with 12" pieces in the new milenium. That is all.

Randomum - So, we should ignore things that are traditionally considered as being important and instead focus on the contributions of blacks as human beings.

One problem.......by pretty much any standard, blacks in the United States are terrible human beings.  I appreciate your attempt to think outside the box, but your post was pathetic and laughable.

So up to this point we have peanut guy, the civil rights movement, and entertainment (sports, music, dance, etc).  Is there nothing else?

Yeah, fine - but they are the same thing - things that are traditionally considered as important were products of a large amount of human beings giving their time, effort and many cases their lives to create.  To me, I do not see how all the black people who were slaves on plantations contributed anything less than their contemporaries that built the pyramids.  They were still slaves.  They still did their jobs and had shitty lives.  That there wasn't a big silly building for a dead king to be buried in (and boost tourism) doesn't diminish their contributions to humanity.

"Important" is a silly concept.  Martin Luther King was a courageous man, but he wasn't "better" than many common folk who had terrible lives and still got their shit done.

This sounds like some nihilistic, post-modernist bullshit.  There are things that are important and things that are not important.  Everything is not the same.

Unskilled slave labor contributes zero to society without a more intelligent person telling them what to do and making them to do it.

A fat sloppy person with an IQ of 85 who works at McDonalds is not as important to society as Thomas Edison.  There is such a thing as important deeds, inventions, ideas, and accomplishments.

I know, but just listen for a second, ok?

The problem with racism isn't that it's mean or morally bad.  It's that it's inaccurate.  If you say that blacks suck then there's no way to explain a black guy who doesn't suck or who is smarter than you are, and there are plenty.  If there are enough exceptions to the rule then the rule measures badly and should be questioned, no?

The main problem with black people in America, as far as I can see, is that they are often racist idiots who would write me off as no damn good on the basis of my skin color.  What, my response should be do the same inaccurate thing?  No, I'm not going to walk through their neighborhood at 3 am, not because 'blacks r no good don't relax' but because I assess it as having a high idiot density.

Just meet some people.  Join a BJJ club or something.  Some people are going to suck outright, some are going to suck because they think that you suck, and some aren't going to suck at all.  If you're being honest then you have to admit that you don't know a dude until you meet him.

Yes, history of a skin color is a stupid concept.  Some major pillars of Western Civilization were the Greeks, Romans, and Jesus.  Not black people but not white people either.

Life's not ideal but it's pretty good.  No hell on the horizon.  If your life is hell then make some changes.

If I had a large number of consistently bad experiences with blacks then maybe I'd write off blacks too.  Seems likely tho that the black guy you meet at the 19th Hole is going to be more fun than the black dudes you keep meeting at the corner of Crenshaw.  So you hang out at the golf course instead of Crenshaw Ave.  That kind of no shit Sherlock thing.

Without black inventors you would have no traffic signals, lightbulbs, potato chips, CD's, Televisions, Stereos, open heart surgery, brain surgery, refrigerators, ice cream, paper clips, microwaves, canned goods, and a lot of other shit.

Without blacks as a whole you wouldn't have Town Square, No White House, at least half of the country would be under French Rule (Louisana Purchase) the other half would be British Rule.

I don't think anyone is saying that all people of a certain race are exactly the same.  That is a simplistic strawman argument that the left often attributes to any white person attempting to discuss issues of race.

What's difficult about discussing race is this.  How do we treat every person as an individual yet also recognize that there are some very remarkable trends among people of the same elthnicity.

Stereotypes didn't just fall out of the sky.

OK, first of all, I don't believe you.  You haven't posted any evidience to support the claims you are making here.  I took my favorite thing from your list and googled the inventor of the television.  I got John Logie Baird a Scot.  I can only assume that you are claiming a black person invented some part that was later used to make a television because, at least at first glance it appears that a black person certainly did not invent the television.  I'm willing to believe that it's possible but I'm very interested to see the proof that black people invented this stuff.

Also, I don't think we should go down the road of "without blacks as a whole" because if black people were never brought to America it would no doubt look like this..............

By being exactly like me.  ;D  Not so doe eyed & naive as to think everyone's wonderful, so you don't go walking through shitty neighborhoods full of angry racists.

When you meet someone see what he's about before deciding if he's a dick.  Black, white, whatever.  Seems straightforward to me.  It's not like I'm preaching some special allowance for minorities that permits them to be assholes.  If someone is all hung up and shoulder chippy about race I just wouldn't have any time for him.  It's a non-issue unless someone insists on making it one.

That attitude is well intentioned but childlike in it's simplicity.  It's great advice for the average person on the street out there trying to make friends.

It doesn't work so well for complex societal problems and the harsh consequences that come along with them.  We have an obligation to understand the world around us and attempt to make it better....for everyone.

Since the discussion of black history inevitably involves art, entertainment, music and dance I hope you'll all take 6 minutes and watch this.

This performance by James Brown on the TAMI Show in 1964 is one of the most powerful and amazing examples of personal expressions I've ever seen by anyone of any race.

This is some of the craziest, dopest shit I've ever seen.  I don't know what else to say about it.  I fucking love it.

It’s not going very well for the black posters
Have they actually named any great inventors or advanced civilisations ??
Have they answered why Africa is such a backward place left to their own devices ??
Have they answered why the blacks in America are killing each other at such a huge rate ??
Have they answered why the black females are generally so fat & STD infected ??
Have they answered why the blacks make their city / living areas such he’ll holes ??

I could go on

Some decent rational answers to the above would be A Good Start ( Try not just to blame the white man)

Dude, you've spent most of the last couple years posting these statistics.  We all have our own idea of what's fun, I suppose, but you didn't used to be so one dimensional.  In fact, I don't remember you making any race oriented posts at all before you started with this stuff.  Did something happen?  Think whatever you want but it seems like a lot of baggage to be hauling around and I don't see what the upside is for you.

Anyway, I agree that black people commit lots of crime.  It doesn't follow from that that all blacks are criminals and crime statistics don't refute my claim that you have to meet someone before knowing if he's an asshole.  If you don't know him then you don't know him.  Christ, that's all I'm saying.  How am I even having to argue in favor of that, it's so friggin obvious.

I know.  You're so right you can't be wrong and I'll never change your mind.  I'm more concerned about the guys here who aren't sure they want to shoulder a bunch of irrational crap for the rest of their lives.

See a black guy at the gas station.  "Fuckin spook."  He has a nicer car than you.  "Probably stole it.  They steal everything.  Have you seen the crime statistics?"

Is that really the guy you want to be?

It’s very easy for you to cop that attitude when you live in a nice lily white area. Not everybody does. We have to be a little more careful.

I’ve seen thousands like you. For all your talk, your kind would rather live crammed four into an apartment in a nice white area than have your own place and live among blacks. It’s all the same. It’s very easy for you to cop that attitude when you live in a nice lily white area. Not everybody does. We have to be a little more careful.

I get that you have to be more careful in higher risk areas.  If you're around a lot of blacks who are scowling at you but don't know you then they're racist idiots, so hopefully you see what I'm saying.

I’ve seen thousands like you. For all your talk, your kind would rather live crammed four into an apartment in a nice white area than have your own place and live among blacks. It’s all the same. It’s no accident that Bernie Sanders is from the second whitest state in the country while he calls everyone else a racist.

You couldn't pay me to live in apartment with other people.  I recently bought 6 acres with a fieldstone house that has a condemned roof which I'm fixing.  So far at BJJ I rolled with a few white guys, a pakistani who was lots of help, Juan who was overly intense and tied me up real quick, a chinaman who looked like he'd kick Bolo's ass but was cool as hell, an Indonesian instructor, and got my rib cracked by a careless damn Aussie.

But there are no black people in the club so it turns out I'm a racist as well as an elitist.  Anyway, the maid has just chimed the dinner bell.  Anatole's amuse-bouche are simply heavenly but I still have to change out of my LL Bean cashmire, so must dash posthaste.  Ta ta.

I guess it's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt, right?

Oh boy.....the Louisiana Purchase was made for 68 million francs or 15 million dollars.   Where do you think the money came from, winning the lottery ???   It came from slaves harvesting cotton, tobacco, and being sold and exported for cash

The Revolutionary War was funded the same way.....without the n i g g e r, George Washington would have been behind the trigger.

The White House was built by slave labor.

Town Square in New York was built by blacks.

The railroads were built by spooks, slants, and micks (Irish were considered nigs too)

Sorry but without dragging us on a cruise ship, this country would not even exist because there would have been no way to make money to get shit done.

Black History Month  ::)

We’re waiting.........

1. There are many great black inventors just google them. The large proportion of white inventors when compared to white inventors can be explained by the same situation in art for white women. How come 99.99% of artists pre-1900 are all white males? Because of gender dynamics which were in effect in every aspect of life. Women just were not able to participate in the art world as it was shunned by males. In the same situation African Americans were not included in the same way due to culture/social caste systems etc.

2. The backwardness of Africa can be explained by colonialism. You look at the countries with the worst crime in the world and it is no surprise they were former colonies. The more established the colonial rule, and the larger amount of culutural groups the more fucked up the countries are. This is due to income inequality. This along with prior institutionalized caste systems created massive amounts of anger.  I believe there is also a correlation between income inequality and mass shootings. Anglosaxon countries with less income inequality have less mass shootings (Canada, Australia).

In addition to this colonial states tended to birth presidential political systems which are highly ineffective in countries with multiple cultural groups, causes. This creates political systems that are winner take all and create massive amounts of political polarization. The US has begun to experience this. The correct political system to make sure everyone has representation is parliamentarism. This would lead to a happier populace that feels included see countries in Northern Europe. Not being equally represented pisses people off. Parliamentarism is also much more stable.

3. The reason why blacks have higher crime rates is because of many social constructs. The main one is the socioeconomic structure of the country on which blacks started being included in the mid 1900s. This means blacks have had a 300 year late start. This resulted in owning less property, businesses etc. In addition to this racial social constructs have created a society in which in some cases black people are presumed guilty automayically because of race.

So black people tend to be poorer, and tend to feel more disenfranchised. This results in us being angrier, and having the feeling that we need to seek out justice on our own means since within our communities their is a sense that the system does not work in the same way for all.

4. The reason for black women having more stds is due to socioeconomic, education levels.  As blacks tend to be poorer due to above reasons we also tend to come from poorer households with lower levels of education. This leads to higher levels of sexual activity. I am curious if anyone can dig up std rates by income and see how whites, latins rate in std by income levels compared to us.

5. Poorer cities with less funding become even worse, and the above mentioned factors also affect life.

The plight of African Americans is never ending cycle that needs to be short circuited. Hateful, and racist comments like some people make on this site negatively affect the whole country. The impact of racism is tremendous and part of the reason for the growing crime problems. The country has been racist since inception why not try something else?

If you correct for single mothers then blacks and whites are equal. Problem with blacks is the family unit is broken and the government incentivized single mothers.

I'm serious...without slavery, America could not have the high production of goods and materials needed to fund the Revolutionary War, Louisiana Purchase, buildings, etc.

George Washington...as brilliant of a commander he was, would have been crushed by the British very quickly.....BTW, part of the reason the French sold the Purchase is because their slaves they had in Haiti revolved and beat the ever loving shit out of them...then went to the U.S and helped Washington beat the shit out of the British.

Its also why the Confederates lost.  They had an obvious advantage in military leadership....Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Pickett, Longstreet.   However they were beaten due to the overwhelming size of the Union in addition to running out of resources once they captured all of that cotton and tobacco.

There would be no United States without black people.....even  the Atomic Bomb that ended World War 2 would not have been possible without black scientists, construction workers.   However, as I stated before, I don't believe in a Black History Month because Black History is American History and distinguishing it separate from anything other history is bullshit.

In addition to this colonial states tended to birth presidential political systems which are highly ineffective in countries with multiple cultural for all.

No it can't.  The United States started as the 13 Colonies.  ...  Also explain Canada, Australia, etc...

Top 10 list of black history

1.   Half Black President Barry Sotero/Barrack Hussein Obama
2.   Abolitionists and Civil Rights activists like Frederick Douglas, MLK, Rosa Parks, etc.
3.   Artists, musicians, athletes and entertainers like Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, etc.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.   Slaves who were forced to do unskilled labor and build things that white people designed
9.   Black guy who got a free burrito once at Chipotle
10. Black guy who may or may not have invented peanut butter

OK, I've updated the list and been extremely kind by including Vince's absurd slave theory as well as civil rights activists and entertainers.  I left burrito boy on the list because it's funny.

Can anyone add to this list in a real and meaningful way?  I don't want to see a list of alleged black inventors without an accurate list of what they invented with some supporting evidence.  Also, don't use any nonsensical theories like the iPhone would never have existed without black people because Apple had a black janitor and a black security guard.  Give me something real that is supported by hard evidence.  Something that could be considered historic in the traditional definition of the word.

Put it that way, that is a reasonable concept. True - slavery was one of the reasons production of goods in the early history of the US was high. Then there was the Industrial Revolution and everything changed.

Not saying its just the White man's fault. In history there are winners and there are losers.  The winners write the history books and control the public perception.

My point is there is plenty to celebrate about my people. Appreciating the African American contributions to America is not for everyone.

African Americans dont need to go back to Africa as America is more our mother country than Africa. During slavery days they would not allow too many slaves from the same country's to go to the same planatations so they could not communicate and would be easier to control. Through time the slaves learned english and created their own creole culture.

At any rate my posts were not to make excuses or bash anyone. I was merely trying to share my viewpoints and the things I have learned.

Your argument is a common one. Had X policy not been instituted or had Y not happened, the results would’ve been different. The problem is you can’t prove that. So, it is just excuse making.

With regard to the most violent places in the world, at the top of the list would be black inner cities, and African-Americans are far from being the poorest people in the world.

For this shit to be happening 2018 after eight years of a black president and a black Justice Department is a fucking embarrassment to humanity and should be condemned not celebrated for a whole month. But you are free to keep believing that had history been different, ghetto rats would be Nobel laureates

With two fatal shootings Tuesday night, the recent reclassification of a decades-old shooting as a killing and another homicide Wednesday evening, Baltimore has hit 343 homicides in 2017, and a new record for killings per capita.

The homicide rate for 2017 is now 55.8 killings per 100,000 people. The previous record was 55.35 per 100,000 in 2015. The city suffered 344 homicides that year, but had thousands more residents

Now you're moving the goal posts.

You stated, "Can anyone add to this list in a real and meaningful way?  I don't want to see a list of alleged black inventors without an accurate list of what they invented with some supporting evidence." You never stated that it had to make a top 10 list.

Id say refining cataract surgery and developing a control unit for the pacemaker to be meaningful interventions. And I bet the people with eye and heart diseases would agree.

But you never provided a framework for what you meant by "meaningful," except when you said it had to be make the top 10 list. I am not too sure who decides what inventions make the top 10 list. Provide that framework.

Not moving the goal posts at all.  Did you read the thread or just that one post?

The point of having a top 10 list is to list the 10 most important pieces of black history.  The best of the best.  None of the stuff you posted would make that list.

You got half of the request right because you added some supporting evidence.  The problem is, your list is still flimsy.

These two posts are in line with what I'm thinking.  They do a good job of addressing most of the replies that I've gotten.  Nobody has really come in here and hit us with something mind blowing.

It's mostly excuses, extrapolation, and speculation.

I'm sorry people, at this point I feel safe in saying that "Black History Month" is pretty much a sham.  There just isn't a lot there to celebrate.  A half black President, civil rights agitators, artists, entertainers and athletes, and some inventors that contributed small components of larger innovations.  Kinda flimsy if you ask me.

My argument is x happened and y is the result, that simple.

In regards to most violent places in the world I stated wealth inequality not level of poverty is the issue. More about the intersection of social caste systems, social mobility, and the frustration that comes to the disenfranchised groups who are negatively affected.

Again the killings and violent crime is a symptom of the problem not the problem.

There is no excuse for murder and rape in any society under any circumstances.

Torturing people for hours, including children and raping family members in front of family and then murdering them...there is no justification at all for this behaviour.

Excuses excuses excuses

All of these well-thought-out arguments that emanate from sociology departments of liberal arts colleges. Yet they can’t even entertain the most obvious explanation, that, as a group, blacks are just less civilized than whites.

Few would contest that the reason that blacks dominate sports like sprinting is largely genetic, but they can’t accept that genetics might play a part in blacks’ lack of civility.

Of course, they can’t really entertain this possibility lest they be labeled a racist or, in the case of blacks, admit inferiority. So they have to come up with excuse after excuse invariably involving some sort of victimhood. However, Dr. King said that “We shall overcome.”  These motherfuckers never overcome anything!

America's most dangerous city has a new chief of police and a new plan to reduce crime: Blame cops and white racism.

Hmmm ... wonder how that is going to work out?

I’m not going to parse that entire missive as that would mean I am insane, but I just wanna destroy this one to point out the typical liberal leftist arguing technique of taking a bit of truth and then drawing a false conclusion. That there was discrimination against women is why there isn’t a 50/50 split among men and women artists.

However, from the 60s on women have had ample opportunities to start bands, make music and create great art. How many female supergroups are there? None. In fact, 99.99% of all great bands are 100% male. So it’s not the discrimination. It’s that men are better at making great music than women. You’re seeing the same thing in Silicon Valley now. They’re trying so hard to have equality in the more technical positions but it’s just not working. And these are liberal minded companies.

Love how "we're all equal" but at the same time.. we should "celebrate our differences/diversity"

Growing up in the South I saw blacks over represented in Catholic Schools and Black Colleges and Universities but that's just me that same ole G.  ::)

It begs the question of what Africa would look like today had the white man never set foot on the continent. I’m  confident in saying that the tallest structure would be a 10 foot high mud hut.

Ha ha - No doubt very true
It does make you wonder what it would be like if left undisturbed by the white man

That won’t stop the blacks bleating & blaming the white man for them being of low IQ

Yes, would still be mudhuts if no other civilization would set foot in Africa.

But thanks to Europe's interference, US of A (and by that effect, also Europe) now has Rap and twerking.

Thanks Portugal / Henry the Navigator, Christopher Columbus/Amerigo Vespucci and Bartolomeu Dias. (Fuck the Dias-brothers!)

Just look at their music. Rap? Hip hop?
