Sorry to hear that. You're a good dude.
If it's any consolation, I just turned forty, and I haven't been able to train since Oct. 2013 (had to get a colostomy bag for seven months, but was thankfully able to get the reconstruction surgery...only the process left me with a big a** hernia :/ ). I'm fat, weak and about the only good thing I can say for my pudgy self is, well, gee: At least I still look better than Blaha or Genova.
Real comfort, that. I beat out a compulsive liar headcase and a fucking retard. Yay me!

Happy Birthday Wes!
After reading some of these replies, it sucks to see Getbiggers literally dying before our eyes. We are supposed to be Eternal! Do not go gentle into that good night.
I am at my strongest right now that I have ever been and still training hard and heavy. Something I will always do. I really should just post some update pictures so everyone can accuse me of steroids. hahahaa

Great poet who died young compared many of us in this thread.
Dylan Thomas
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Any tips for longevity in the gym ???

WES, Hapy Birthday to one of the best dudes on this board! I beat ya by a century or two and can still outwalk, outtalk, and possibly even outdrink 70% of the blow-hards on this board.
Here are a couple of suggestions:
Walk your ass off every day. Get a pedometer watch or app for your cell phone and take at least 10,000 steps a day ... that is roughly 4 miles, but build it up to 15,000 steps within a reasonable amount of time.
Fuck this don't eat meat shit, but do eat sensibly avoiding too much beef and switch to chicken and fish.
Try to measure you meals so that the meal on your plate at one sitting is no larger than your fist.
Drink a moderate amount of red wine. No hard liquor. Drink lots of water.
Drink green tea instead of coffee. Take your vitamins. I eat Gummy Bears.
See your doc twice a year and keep track of your blood pressure.
Get 8 hours of sleep, but some of us need less. You have to decide.
At your age ... cataracs may be forthcoming. Have faith! It's like going to a dentist without the pain.
Eat lots of green vegetables.
So much more but there is a knocking on the door.
But quit feeling sorry for yourself. You still have two arms and two legs and a working mind and I know a few friends who are missing some of those bodyparts and are getting along better than you sound someplace above.
And remember ... You got lots of friends on this board who stand behind ya, so get off you ass and start walking!
Think young and get it done!
It's fun

Great news

I got a good friend who just turned 77. Still works out, although it's machines, light weights. Has all his hair, loves to have a couple glasses of wine each night. Able to ride a personal water craft, travel, walk for miles if need be.. really enjoying life in the golden years.. that's what I strive for.. except its too late for the hair. 63 is not that old these days. Get the shoulders healed up and get back to enjoying life

One year away from likely death as the average age of death for a male in the US is 78. He sounds like the type of guy that if you sent him to the store for sausages, he would come back with an ample supply of dildos instead and a boxed set of Elton Johns Live from San Francisco Albums. hahahah
Gayer than growing tomatoes and then posting them on instagram in hopes that other farmers will be aroused.

I remember when you had posts worth reading. what happened? Seriously, you were an A level poster... now you are D level at best. Is there something that happened in the last 3 years?
-
I'm not too far behind you, Wes. I'm 58 now and closing in on 60 fast. Also had shoulder issues for over 25 years and had surgery on both. It's gotten progressively worse. Today I used 3 lbs on my left side dumbell shoulder press for 4 reps before I have to "force" a few more out with help of my other hand and I use 10 pounds for my right side for about 8 reps with 3 forced reps after that.
On the hammer incline I have just a ten and a five pound plate on each side and can eek out about 8 reps. It's pretty pathetic and people rag on me all the time but doing nothing is worse. Pulling movements are fine but can't squat anymore and I only use 95-115 lbs for stiff leg deads. Again, it's better than nothing.
Key for me is that I stay consistent. I only train twice a week now but, again, it's better than nothing.

Most people start falling apart at 60. Sad to see so many here crippled by injury. I think one of the reasons I have few injuries is because I haven’t taxed my body much since 1977. I am still doing hypertrophy training.

Are you saying he's closeted? That's too bad. It is very difficult for some folks to come out as long as there are homophobic haters around.

Not much any of us can do about baldness. From my experience, baldness doesn't signify old age. My hair started thinning out in my senior year in high school. At the young age of 22 a buzz cut was the only haircut that worked for me.
-
Are you saying he's closeted? That's too bad. It is very difficult for some folks to come out as long as there are homophobic haters around.
Of course Basile he is... dont let his dislike for homosexuals distract you,
-he hates steroids too, yet he had no problem using dbol several times to get in the few times he was in actual shape
-he is obsessed with a gay balck man on this board also named vince, in which he comes across as a scorned lover
-is always talking about his love for doing "hypertrophy", "Hypertrophy is code for him being a "size queen", coincidentally the gay black guy above he is secretly in love with packs an 8 incher according to many of the southern USA's many married men on the downlow with sore assholes out there
-Blue stars, the man types in a blue font, he wants his writing to look "fabulolous"
-he lives in warehouse, bet he tells all those aussie twinks he likes to photograph, known as "lads" that the warehouse is a giant loft
-he owned a penthouse apartment on a beach called "Manly", nuff said
-every year he posts a pic of him showing off his "18 Inch Pumped and Uncut" naked arms, which is code for him wanting to wrap his naked arms around some other dude
-every time someone disagrees with him, he throws a righteous hissy fit like some old nancy boy queen
-he was a "pinch grip" champion, code words for "ball fondler"
-he uses the terms "flotsam" and Jetsam" which is probably Aussie Slang for "turd" and "Burglar"
-He owned a porsche and had a neatly trimmed beard at the same time, if that does not scream "I want to come out" then you just dont understand
-

Key for me is that I stay consistent. I only train twice a week now but, again, it's better than nothing.
And I thought I was failing. Luckily, I never injured my delts or any other muscle group. I keep the resistance light and the reps anywhere from 12 to 6 with 4-6 sets for each exercise. My theory is the lower the reps the greater the resistance. I rarely go heavy on delts. Below the waist movements are a different story. When I do squats, I use light resistance. I do as much as I can on machines because of my lower back, and right knee, which are both compromised. My quads and glutes are whimpy as a result. Sometimes I'll do 4 sets of 25 very deep squats using just bodyweight. I get a pump, but no longterm growth.
Consistency is key for everyone. It's one of my issues because I get bored and am easily distracted. My complete routine takes 6 days, working one muscle group each day. I rest on the 7th day, which is usually a Sunday and then I start all over again. This gives my muscles 7 days to recover. My old body demands that.
I completely gave up on gettin big more than a decade ago. My genetics always limited my potential and then age kicked in and I realized my health was more important than having big swol muscles.
-

now that you have leapt out of the closet, have you managed to score some dick or are you just a casual observer who walks around the gym locker room starting conversations wearing only a towel around your neck?

Why bother with a towel?:) Score dick? I'm 73 years old, no longer have a prostate, functioning penis or a libido. -Don't give a rat's ass about sex these days. Sad, but true.
I'm trying to get a visual of me leaping out of the closet, but nothing's coming to me. If I remember correctly, the closet in my room when I was a teenager was too small to fit in. Hmm, maybe I was never in the closet.
BTW, 90% of what I write on Getbig is not to be taken too seriously. ;)

One of the principles of recovery espoused by Arthur Jones was the distinction between localized recovery, recovery of the individual muscle or muscle group; and systemic recovery, recovery of the body as a whole. If you do no training at all, even if you are a couch potato, your individual muscles have nothing to recover from, but your body as a whole does and is accomplished by having to sleep every night.
When Jones' spoke of recovery he was primarily referring to systemic recovery. Individual muscles recover pretty fast. So though you are training a muscle group just once a day you are subjecting your body to daily stress. I train each body part twice a week but only train a total of two times a week.
Am I not giving my "muscles" enough time to recover as you are? If that was the case I would be getting weaker and weaker every workout. Am I getting more systemic recovery time? Just not having to go to the gym every day is a huge stress reliever. You're retired but I can't for the life of me see how an average working man with a family lives a balanced life having to workout every day and not get burned out.
Consistency is the key and the key to consistency is doing something you can comfortably handle long, long term.
-
Happy birthday. Forget about using steroids and posing on stage. Training now should be all about health and form will follow. Eliminate any exercise that hurts. There are so many others. I can't bench any more. No problem. Machines and dumbbells. The decline bench is pain free and seems to work the pecs better than flat. I take that approach to a lot of exercises. I even stopped my love of barbell squats. Getting better results with dumbbell squats. If your legs are working do a ton of cardio. Better to be a lean old man than a soft old man.
It seems so many have permanent damage from lifting for decades and some do not. Robby and Padilla seem okay joint wise while others like Dickerson are a wreck. I envy guys that don't care about the weight on the bar. One said work the muscle and not the ego. Smart advice.

Consistency is the key and the key to consistency is doing something you can comfortably handle long, long term.
What you wrote makes sense. Like you suggest, there are a number of things to consider besides muscle recovery when creating a routine. I'm comfortable resistance training for about 45 minutes with an additional 15 minutes of cardiovascular work. In the past, especially before I retired, I trained less often and for a longer time period. If I were to train more muscle groups per session, I would reduce the number of exercises, but maintain the my preferred training time limit and I would reduce the number of sessions per week. Over decades of working out, I've used a lot of different routines. They all work as long as I am consistent.
To stave off boredom, I change things up fairly often. The current routine isn't something that's set in stone. As a senior with a Regence Medicare Advantage plan that includes the Silver and Fit program, Membership fees at most facilities in the area are completely covered. L.A. Fitness, 24 Hour Fitness and a privately owned gym nearby are my preferred choices. 24 Hour Fitness and L.A. Fitness gyms are available to me nation wide. In the Portland Metro area, I mainly use 3 or 4 different facilities each week.

Makes you a total tool. Didn't you criticize Goodrum on MD?
What does that have to do with something? Like I said you are a bitter old fool like my mother who holds nonsensical grudges for decades totally in denial that you are the one who probably started it.
a tool is someone who can't let it go. What you?
