It's always been a source of shame and embarrassment that I was so "unhandy" in the sense that
I couldn't do crap as far as home and car repairs. Never pounded a nail or could barely use a screw driver, never changed a tire. I felt that as a man you should be somewhat competent in that area and are able to do some basic repairs and put things together for yourself. My dad was a total book worm and nerd and I never learned anything from him in that respect. My uncle, my aunt's husband, could fix and build anything. I always looked up to him. Back in the 1960s he would work at Pan Am airlines at night and built his home from the ground up by himself during the day. The amazing thing was that he wasn't a trained carpenter. He learned on the job! Learned to build a house while he was building his house. When he would get stuck he would just ask advice from the construction workers in the area since there was tons of housing being built at that time in Waipahu, HI. I've been reading the Goodrum thread about his new dwelling with great interest but so much goes over my head. I'm so impressed that guys like Melvin and so many others that post in that thread know so much about construction. Also like Marty Champions post about construction. To me he's the hard core real deal when it comes to real man's work. He may be a drunken fatso but I feel like such a beta pussy compared to him.
Anyway, I got a job at a local hardware store and in the last six months I've learned to cut keys, mix paint, use the panel and chop saw, pump propane, drive a fork lift, use the pipe cutter, hand drill, cut glass.... I've even put some furniture together that we put on display. It's hard ass work for me at 58 years old and I get absolutely exhausted at the end of the day. I'm still a moron and when customers ask me questions because most of the times I'm clueless but I am learning a lot. It's amazing when you try something completely different from what you are use to how much you learn in such a short period of time even if you're old and set in your ways.
I've replaced my air conditioner and because the hole was already there and it was just a matter of putting it in and securing it that's nothing for most of you here but for me that's quite an accomplishment. Hopefully I'll gain enough confidence to do some painting on my house and maybe redo my kitchen. I'm pretty sure I can put in a new toilet myself if I had to. Something I wouldn't even consider in the past.
I thought I'd throw in some pics, though non-bbing pics, as it's been some years since I've posted any recent pics. I'm still consistent with training but have cut back to twice a week as my priorities and interest, as well as energy levels have shifted.

This is a good lesson for why people need to work hard when they’re young, invest their earnings and plan for the future.

Pellius made a positive post, and there is no need to pull the thread into this direction...

I know what you mean, I went into the military, my friends went into different fields, mechanic, construction, IT, etc and over the years they built up an impressive list of things they could build and fix. I envy their skills. Luckily youtube came along and I was able to learn how to do basic repairs on the car and home by watching videos. When you stop learning, you might as well die. I'm learning new things all the time.

That looks like the Cyr Lumber near me.
Sounds like your enjoying it even though the days are long. Props.

???? What does continuing to work have to do with that?
I tend to be a home body and when I retired I found that I just started sleeping late and hanging around the house just reading and message boarding. I think it's important to get out of the house and keep busy. Go out and meet people. Learn something new. Working in a store in my neighborhood I have gotten to meet, talk and learn about people that I've lived with for years but never really gotten to know. I'm surprise at how much people have gone through in their lives. Looking at them you would never know. I just met a couple last week who moved to Hawaii after their son got murdered in a terrorist attack in France. I remember that incident. He was just an ordinary college student in the wrong place at the wrong time.
In such a short time I've made what I consider life long friends. People who have enriched my life. I've been to barbecues at people's homes that I never would have known and who have lived such rich, interesting lives. Also, it's kind of nice that when I'm out and about, like say, I go to the grocery store or The Windward Mall I always run into somebody I know and we have a good chat or go to lunch.
And if you need help installing a new toilet -- I'm there.

You were always jealous of my luxurious full head of hair still going strong as I near sixty. Let it go, CalvinH!
Let it go! You have your gifts as well. I couldn't hold a candle to your ability to consume and tolerate alcoholic beverages.

There's on thing that people like you that make comments like that always have: they have never, nor will they ever, post a pic of themselves. They would be laughed off the board.
But please carry on with your role as the most disliked member on this board.

I agree, being retired is overrated, stay busy and stay active. But being in Hawaii you should've considered being a scuba instructor.

My pops retired with an awesome pension, gets social security and has good investments and he works a part time job. It's good for him. Gets him out of the house, he made new friends that he goes out to breakfast with a few times per week, etc. He didn't need to work after retirement. He wanted to work.

Good for your dad. Perhaps I should give part time work some serious consideration. I do quite a bit of volunteer work which helps to keep me busy.

I know a retired millionaire who is a Walmart greeter, no joke drives a Bentley too parks it all the way at the end of the Walmart parking lot, says he loves it! See's all kinds of interesting people, gets away from his wife, and keeps him busy, the guy is always happy, and does a great job. I got to know him from going to Walmart and every time he would say "you looking big man" or "hey big guy" finally one day he asked me about my diet and looked at the food I bought, we got to talking he was saying his son's like working out too, but they never have enough time to train properly, I asked what did they do, he said both of them are doctors, I said what the hell are you doing you here?? They should be taking care of you, he told me he used to own a restaurant and also owns a lot of real estate, he said I just do this part time to get out of my house, see and talk with people. I said you know what you're right man, he then said check this out, he shows me his key chain, it's a Bentley key, I said "you drive a Bentley?" he's just smiles and says look at the end of the parking lot and you'll see my car, it was a black Bentley coupe. Dude is awesome, so props to you Pellius, live your life man!

About being multi-skilled re various jobs. When I taught high school I noticed that the future tradesmen came from the classes which were average. If these people could weld, fabricate, etc., it couldn't be that difficult. Owning a gym often requires various tasks and it wasn't long before I learned how to weld and use simple machine tools to make gym equipment. I graduated to having an engineering factory complete with big lathes, milling machines, auto bandsaw, 3 Morse Taper Radial Drills and everything else needed to fabricate gym equipment. I got manuals and learned that way. Nowadays it is easier and better to watch and learn from YouTube videos.
Over the years we have moved gyms. So I had to draft plans for council approval. Then there was some building to do such as partitions. Some simple plumbing, tiling, electrical work, and installing and shifting things like mirrors and equipment. You soon become a jack of all trades if you own a gym for decades.
Computers were easy to use and I even built my own super computer a few years ago. Well, super for me. 48 Gb of Ram for example.

I never knew anything about hardware and lumber until I spent 5 years working at Lowes. Its very fulfilling to know what goes into a home and how to improve it. I mostly learned about home decor and interior design. But I would have taken up a home based business on your own if you were getting bored but as long as you enjoy it, its what's important

Had to smile at how P wears pants that display his trademark calves! Lots of personal info posted here which is a surprise. Sounds like Pellius made a good choice with this new job.
I wear shorts because here in Hawaii it's a warm climate and just about everybody wears shorts unless they have to follow a dress code. At work I'd say about 70 percent of those working in the store wear shorts including both the manager, assistant manager and all but one of the supervisors. 100% of the staff that works in the lumber department, which includes me, wear shorts. Other than the cashiers it's a very physical job as even people on the sales floor are constantly unloading pallets and stocking shelves. Those in the lumber department are outside, so no air conditioner, and it's very physical work. Always on your feet, always having to do something.
Not everyone, in fact I would say only a small arguably mentally disturbed cult, has a bodybuilder mentality and are constantly checking out and evaluating other people's muscular proportions, as well as there own -- always striving to present their best attributes and presentation. I am closing in fast on 60 years old. 60 goddamn years old! Though I always want to be a good health and good physical shape and will always make it a priority, I am determined to never have a pot belly like the majority of men over 40 do. But trying to look jacked or dress in ways to accent any muscular development has steadily drop lower and lower on my priority list as the years wear on.
I wear shorts for comfort and would be doing so even if my calves went back to the original 13 inches
instead of the slightly over 16 inches it is now. I give my calves little thought and don't even train them nor do I consider it my "trade mark". When someone describes me or refers to me if they forget my name it's virtually always in reference to my height. There is only one other person that works here that's about my same height and he is referred to as the tall, bald guy. I'm the tall guy with the "bushy" hair.
Normal people don't give a shit about other people's calves although, admittedly, that is the first thing I check out in a person when I walk behind them. I do this because I am truly amazed at how many people, probably unaware or unconcerned, are in the advance stages of diabetes. Their swollen discolored calves and ankles, often with festering sores -- hell some even have their edema spill over their shoe laces which they have leave untied because of their swollen feet -- present a clear picture and stark warning that they will eventually be in a wheel chair or possibly and amputee.
All because they just can't control their eating. They can't just have a regular meal but always have to stuff themselves to the gill each time and, snack and snack and snack throughout the day. The majority of these fatties don't go even a half an hour before they put something in their mouths.
So, yeah, I check out people's calves but for an entirely different reason than you do.

That's good to know as you seem pretty knowledgeable. I didn't know you were at Lowes for that long. I don't plan to stay in the lumber biz indefinitely. I took this job for the previously stated reasons as well as it being very close and convenient to where I live but it is physically taxing at my age and my knees and back are screaming at the end of the day. I literally could not keep up physically if I had to work here full time. I plan to try other things and have always had the idea of being a personal trainer (OK, I know everyone ido s now rolling their eyes). I would definitely love to start a home business but don't have your business knowledge or even know where or how to begin. I would very much like to hear any advice you can give me either here on this thread or via PMs to spare any flaming you always get no matter what you say.

Looking good, old friend.
Great to hear from you! I've haven't been on your board in ages. Truth is, my interest in bbing has waned and your board is definitely geared toward the serious and competitive inclined. Yours is the first board that I now refer people to for real world "balonie free" information. Some of the people, including yourself, you have on there giving free advice is priceless.
Can't believe I'm going to be 60 years old. You can fake it well into your forties but once you start getting into your mid fifties, let along sixty, "it's over Johnny." Then it's all about just hanging in there.
I keep reminding myself of what Basile once said when someone said that despite all his hypertrophy theories he has changed his physique one iota and achieve nothing over the years. His brilliant reply, and one that I take to heart, was that "At my age staying the same is an achievement."

Octocoon
LOL! I see what you did there. You're never going to let me live that down. But for the uninformed it's Octoroon so only 1/8 of me has a propensity for gratuitous violence and theft. But also throw in some Filipino, Spanish, Chinese and Irish. I think that because of Hawaii being right in the middle of the Pacific we're all pretty much mutts here but Matt is probably more knowledgeable and informed to speculate on that.

I live in shorts 24/7 ;D , eat 1X p/d (just 3-4 amino-protein drinks to 6pm) & f______g hate fatsos :P.
In AU , huge hardwares like Bunnings have cafes 4 picking up milfs ;D, Monday after 10am is the best time.

I'm retired and work two to three times a week. The money comes in handy. I sometimes like going to work and sometimes I wish I wasn't working. When I wasn't working I had way too much sit down time despite working out. Sitting around is just horrible for your body.

WARNING: Do not read the following uless you are retired or semi-retired (you may also want to add retarded or semi-retarded ) and have an interest in cameras / photography or an uncontrolable urge to have such an interest.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
A couple of you retired or semi-retired gents have mentioned an interest in photgraphy.
I also have a similar interest, but my interest is in the collection and storage of unique cameras such as the original GoPro Hero, and these new cameras that shoot in a 360 degree format, and now 4K, 360, 3D cameras ....
But I seem to have no interest in using them once I purchase them as I presently have about 12+ unique cameras safely stored away in a big plastic box in the garage.
This unique problem of mine started when I purchased one of the original GoPro Hero cameras and used it to shoot videos of some of those expensive beach-front homes about 200 yards south of the Venice Beach pit ... only to discover that each of those videos turned out to be extensively blurry and out of focus.
So that Hero went into storage and another Hero was purchased a couple of years later ... which also ended up in storage after the initial thrill of opening that GoPro package. It had never even gotten used.
This "camera purchase/never-used/storage" problem still continues to this day ..... so a short time ago I pulled out that storage container and discovered 14 expensive camers which had never experienced the 'thrill' of taking any kind of photograph nor video.
And only then did I discover the reason why that first Hero canera had taken such blurry and unfocused pictures many years ago.
Back then I did not realize that the lens was covered by a cellophane cover to protect that lens from scratches during transit.
So now I decided to purcase another GoPro Hero camera (the Hero 6)
which you can talk to and other hi-tech stuff (High-tech'er than the Hero 5) but have been advised to wait for the Hero 7 supposedly coming out this Sept 2018.... because the sound quality should be better than the 6 which is not up to par.
This new camera will most likely end up in storage until I can break this 'buy one and never use one' habit.
Is there an AA for camera collectors?
And now I am becoming extremely interested in $300 Gimbles and $1,000+ Drones.
Oh, shit! I'll have to find a bigger storage box!
-
jesus
how come all those old farts never knows when to stop talking?

Any hot 17 y/o walked into the store to smoke weed with together with the security guard?

BTW, thanks for all the positive comments. Many of you here I've had some very heated arguments with the requisite insults and name calling on many passionate issues such as religion, culture and politics. Nice to see that we can still put those aside when dealing with a neutral everyday life topic.

The 99 cent McDoubles are long gone so it's been a while since I've been to Mcd. It's still the least expensive burger for the amount of protein you get but you can't beat whole lettuce and sliced tomatoes, plus I like my burgers flame broiled on a grill rather than sizzling in it's own fat on a frying pan, so it's Burger King now for me. Actually, right now it's all about Taco Bell. I'm not a big eater but those taco supreme, the one with the sour cream and chopped tomatoes -- those go down real easy and I can put aways 3, sometimes 4, in one sitting. But you have to eat them right away because like french fries they get soft and soggy if they sit too long.
BTW, where the hell can you get a decent bag of fries these days? They are all horrible! Even McDonald's, which use to have the best in the biz. What the hell happened? Did my taste change or did they change the way they make the?

I love my City Mill in Hawaii Kai.... Kaimuki one is good too.
Hah! Kaimuki is our busiest store and the workers there bust ass. Hawaii Kai is known as the store with the most difficult and rude customers. It makes sense as Hawaii Kai has grown into a very exclusive area. My family moved there in the early 1970s when I was twelve and houses were affordable. My Dad paid under a $100 grand for it and sold it in the late 80s for over $500 thousand when the Japanese were buying up everything on the islands and prices were skyrocketing. Now it's a million dollar home.
The house is in that subdivision right next to Kaiser High school where I graduated from. The school was brand spanking new as well. If you are looking straight at the school from Lunalilo Home Rd the subdivision is on the right. It use to be a huge plantation with a sprawling estate which now serves, as we called it back then, an old folks home. Sammy "Steamboat" Mokuahi, the famous 50th State wrestler lived right down the street from me. I'm sure Stunt Movie has some stories about him as he seemed to know everybody that was anybody in Hawaii.
Right in front of the school is the Hawaii Kai fire station and my best friend at the time father worked there. It had a weight room which consisted of a bench, squat rack, sit up board and some of those adjustable dumbbells. The kind you had to unscrew the collars and you could attach plates at the end.
Sitting on the bench the squat rack was about five feet in front of me. The sit up board about four feet to the side and the dumbells scatter with small plates laying around on the other side. I would say it was about the size of an average bedroom. Anyway, that's when I first started formally lifting weights at the age of 12. I use to do push-ups, pull-up, body weight squats, dead lift bricks and/or buckets prior to moving to Hawaii Kai and didn't have access to weights. My friend eventually quite lifting after a few months even though he was much stronger at the same age but I kept at it. It was kind of creepy walking through the room of the sleeping firemen to get to the tiny weight room but I was determined to be a "he-man" which is the term they used in that day. And here I am, 46 years later, still at it non stop.
Still not a he-man.
Sammy "Steamboat" Mokuahi. I use to watch him mowing his lawn in awe. I so wanted to be as big and strong as he was.

Have any problems growing up as a 'fuckin haole'? I've heard it can be pretty tough. At least when I lived there in the 70's...

Hey Pellius, have any problems growing up as a 'fuckin haole'? I lived there in the 70's and heard a few stories from local haoles about having to fight constantly...Probably was worse in town than the nicer area where you lived. Some of the Polynesians, such as the Tahitians have a reputation for being friendly, but Hawaii was always one of the islands considered more hostile, Captain Cooke was even murdered on the beach by locals.

I am not, nor was ever considered to be, a haole growing up in the islands. But yes, White boys do have a hard time growing up in Hawaii and get hassled all the time. When you're an adult it's mostly the under class locals that still carry that prejudice with them. It's accepted because it's targeted at Whites.
I'm not sure there is a "kill haole day" anymore in the public schools which was celebrated on the last day before Christmas vacation. People are all hyper sensitive now when it comes to race.

I don't think there is a universal rule. It will depend on the manufacturer's formulation. In my experience, however, any paint over any primer is ok. It'll say what's what on the tin if you have any doubt. Paint over the other kind of paint without a bonding primer is not ok tho. Water over oil is definitely no good.
The practice, however, is to color coat with whatever the primer is. (Exception would be oil stain blocker. I like the Zinnser 'Bin' shellac for stain blocking on latex tho, provided it's not peeling.) It's probably a grandfathered rule from back when formulations absolutely required the painter to follow suit but it also has to do with 'grab.' An oil paint over an acrylic primer would want a light tack coat before first proper color coat since it'll be more prone to run than if it was sprayed over an oil primer. If brushing, you definitely want to feel some drag on the brush with the first oil coat. Well, all oil coats but definitely the first.
I imagine people coming in to see you are wanting to repaint their place in water based. They'll need a bonding primer over oil for that. Latex is superior for walls, ceilings, and pretty much anything outside imo since it won't embrittle with UV. For trim, however, oil (even tho it yellows with time) is best since it's more impact resistant and looks better in gloss. Anything that moves - doors and windows - oil, since latex causes sticking in the heat. Oil is kunty tho, which is why there's latex everywhere now. It'll take more coats, run easier, be smelly, dry slowly, have overspray that'll fuck with your latex surfaces, and insist that the priming is done really thoroughly. Oil is a better finish but they're gonna earn it.

Considering the amount of different races and the wealth gap and homelessness in Honolulu I think it is a pretty harmonious place overall.
Would I want to be white and poor here? No.

Being poor anywhere sucks and being rich anywhere is usually pretty good.
If your the rich person you just ignore the poor people outside your gated community like the tourists do in the Caribbean and Mexico.

The easiest answer is to use oil based paint over oil based primer and water based paint over water based primer. White pigmented shellac is a great stain blocker. It can be used with both latex (water based) and oil based paints. I use an appropriate primer over Zinsser white shellac because the primer provided a smoother surface.
Oil based paint (enamel) is more durable than latex paint. It also provides a smoother- flatter finish because it dries more slowly than water based paints, thus it is great to use on millwork.
Oil based paint is used much less often these days because of it's toxicity - VOC's. It has also become more expensive.

We mostly sell Benjamin Moore which is all water base. The only oil base we sell is Rustoleum and the colors are limited. The Zinsser 123 water base primer sells the best by far.

I just notice that one of the pics I posted didn't attach. I think I reached the limit. Anyway, this pic
is with one of my close friends there who is really an intelligent and interesting guy. Lives in a nice house walking distance from work and owns a brand new truck and a 2015 Camry. Not rich but lives very
comfortably and goes on cruises once a year and travels to Europe once a year for vacation. He is 70 years old but looked much younger until he just recently grew the beard. The guy is in great shape
and works as a janitor at the store. I don't get it and give him a hard time about it but he use to work in the store and when the custodian position opened up he jumped on that. He just likes getting out of the house, being on his feet not confirmed to one area in the store, and chatting and meeting all the people that come in the store.
I really believe just keeping busy helps you stay young. It gives your body the signal that you need to stay alive. When you just sit around doing nothing, like so many do when retired, like my father did, you give your body the signal that there's no point to stay alive. Being lazy makes you even more lazy.

I'm getting back into competing and plan on taking a hefty amount of drugs.
I'm too old to win the open, but I might get the Mayor of BB to stalk me.
THEN, I can die happy and get my funeral highlights posted here on getbig.
Howard, what is your typical day like now that you're retired? And please, if possible, spare us the
homo-erotic fantasies and like. I mean this as a serious question.

No wonder you were picked as an Elf!
I wasn't an Elf for very long. Due to my ambition, work ethic, and putting in the extra hours
I was quickly promoted to Jedi. I expect to do the same at the hardware store and as soon
as I increase my knowledge and skill set I hope to be accepted into the management trainee
program.
It's all about moving forward while keeping decent arm size.
BTW, I don't think I ever told you but when I do dumbbell curls I always hold the dumbbell so that my thumb is all the way to the side and begin with the plate facing forward. I then supinate my forearm while curling. I've been doing this since I was a teenage when you had to load the plates yourself and I would make one side heavier to increase resistance during the supination. I did this because I noticed when I would make a bicep in front of the mirror how the bicep would lengthen and shorten as I twisted my wrist back and forth. I learned from an early age that supination was definitely involved in bicep contraction. Problem is, as I believe it is with all movements that I consider superior to the standard ones, is that it really doesn't seem to make any real world difference as far as results. Arnold, Boyer Cole, Robby, Beckles all had world class biceps and they never had access to the equipment and knowledge we have today. Mine are still under 16 inches.

Strange looking guy. Ever get laid by a pretty girl Pellius? My guess is NO.

The painter who worked on my most recent home remodel used Benjamin Moore paints. The mill work is painted in semi-gloss Aura. Even the stain for the kitchen island and front door is water based. Unfortunately, his crew brushed the cabinet fronts in the laundry room and it's obvious they didn't know what they were doing because they left brush marks. When brushing water based paints on the trim you have to lay it on in quickly or it gums up and leaves brush marks. Fortunately, all the rest of the trim was sprayed. Someday I'll take the cabinet doors down, sand them smooth and repaint them correctly.

We get a lot of complaints about shitty work done by contractors. How come you let them get away with it. If they did a shitty job how come you don't just tell them and insist that they fix it? Why fix it yourself when you paid them to do it?

I called the painting contractor on his and his crew's sloppy work several times. They'd fix some of it and not other mistakes. This was an ongoing problem with them. The unprofessional work on the cupboard doors was the last straw. I pointed it out to the general contractor who wanted to call the painting contractor back to fix it. I told him I was done with the painter and not to bother calling him. Apparently, I was not the first of the general's customer's to "fire" the painter. This remodel went on for 6 months. I just wanted it over with.
The downstairs bedroom wing is the next and last phase of the remodel. I've put it off for over a year because I wasn't ready for another disruption like the rest of the downstairs was. There are 3 bedrooms and two baths which I'd like to do one at a time to avoid having the whole wing torn up at once. I will likely do the painting myself.

Now with services like Yelp and others it will be harder for these guys, or anybody for that matter, to get away with shoddy work. People just have to speak up more. And they are.
Three bedrooms and two baths? You should sell that place and move to a smaller one and live it up with the big chunk of money you'd get. Seems like a waste rattling around in such a big house.

I haven't stained or varnished much but latex glosses all suffer from brush marks to at least some degree ime. There's internet wisdom which recommends adding extenders such as antifreeze but I never wanted to roll those dice.
The last bunch of flush panel doors (doorway doors, not cabinet doors), I just used a 4mm nap microfibre/mohair roller, rolled pretty dry. :-\ Slight, uniform orange peel beats brush marks, hands down. Might try a foam roller at some point and see if it's any flatter. Everyone was happy but I felt I could do better. It was pretty much the finish I'd get from an airless but I want a fucking mirror. In water based, guess that's the grail.
Think I'm going to buy a Kremlin air assisted airless. I always spray trim so want production quantity rather than a pot gun. Critics say AAA solves a problem which doesn't exist since all you have to do is water down the paint to get it to gel and eliminate spray fingers, but I'm not interested in watering down the paint. I'm willing to heat it to reduce viscosity but I don't want to fuck with the formulation. The bond would be fine but it kills the thixotropy and hang, so now you're shooting for lesser coverage to avoid runs and doing another full circuit around. Also, every pro painter I've spoken to who poo-poos AAA has never used one and is rough as a badger's ass. Doesn't mean they're wrong but pretty sure I'm going to ignore them since my work is miles better than theirs and I'm not even a 'real painter.'
Did you spend any time with AAA or HVLP in your days, Prime?

You'd think this but I don't know. In a small town, maybe word of mouth would hurt a persons business if they did shoddy work, but I found in a larger city contractors don't care too much because with 80 new people a day moving into the city, there is always a person out there ready to either not do any research or just assume the reviewer was a bad apple. I've written a few negative reviews with specific facts and look back later and there are 20 new reviews, 14 of them negative with the "I should have checked reviews first.." as the lead off sentence.

You have a point there but I think the tide is turning. It took a while for me, say in the last two years, to check up on people or products before I pay a penny. It's easy to do now when you buy things off Amazon and the like. It's definitely saved me from buying bad products.

Oh I agree 100% on the Amazon and product thing. Contractors, not so much. For example, we're moving to Florida in the fall. I'm not from this area and want to find a reputable moving company. A lot of horror stories on long distance moving companies out there and weeding through the reviews, they all sound like there is a good chance it's gonna suck. Seems for every good experience someone has with one of the companies, 3 people have a bad one. You would think moving companies would care what the reviews say but it doesn't seem like it. You have to hire one of them and they are equally crappy :)

Red flag 1: The guy who is billing you isn't the guy doing the work. Don't hire a trade broker with 'his crew' who aren't tradesmen enough to be out doing their own thing. I've never seen a crew who work without the contractor present do a good job. It has never happened. They will deliver 'good enough' which isn't.
Red flag 2: No trade specific tools or a whole lot of cheapo brand tools. If you're in the game for real then you have good gear, all of it, and it looks worked.
Red flag 3: They're the cheapest. I know that the only thing that counts right now is money. Later, the only thing that will count is quality. Never ask a contractor to beat the other guy's price. Once I hear that, I won't even do the job for what I quoted. Not everyone can afford the Taj Mahal, and that's fine. Some corners you can cut no problem, some you barely can, and other's you shouldn't ever. An experienced tradesman knows which are which. The cheapest guy is probably going to cut them all. Hire him and you're complicit.
Talk nuts and bolts. What he proposes to do, where and how. Timeline. Materials estimates. But have your project clearly defined and have this discussion once. If you don't even know what you want then how the hell am I going to put a price on it?
Asking for references is fine but don't repeatedly seek assurance that the work will be good quality. You'll just seem like a fretful nut. If the guy refuses to do something that will save you money because it's shoddy, that's a good sign.

I was working for a moving company and I can tell you after many experiences its 99% of the time the clients who start bullshit and try to shortchange the moving companies
alot of these people who had their stuff "held" typically are refusing to pay and demanding all kinds of shit not in the estimate
example we had one guy recently(paki) mooving his family into a new house. I was at the estimate which was only supposed to be the main floor of the house he was renting. then he made us stop at a storage facility to pick up a "few boxes" which turned out to be a trcukload of brand new furniture(couches, fridges, bbq's etc) all in original brand new boxes, some of which weighed almost 200lbs which he wanted all on the second floor of this house. added a few hours to the job and he refused to pay the extra afterwards until he almost got his paki head caved in by the boss
doing moves I learned tlike I said 99% of the time its the clients who pull bullshit then refuse to pay what amlunts to extra work that was not part of the original agreement, then they go online and bitch

Did you spend any time with AAA or HVLP in your days, Prime?
I did not and have not ever used an Airless, AAA or HVLP. 'My day' was a long time ago. ;)
When I worked with my dad, who was a painting contractor, I did all the brush work. Cutting in walls and ceilings was a snap and a workout because you're up and down the ladder a lot. I also did the trim, using oil based enamel which was pretty much the only choice back then. I could knock out a divided light window pretty quickly. When my dad started in the business, everyone used brushes because there was no such thing as rollers.
After moving to Portland, I worked with a painting contractor who only did high-end work, mostly for repeat customers. The only area he rolled was flat paint on walls. In rooms where some sheen was called for, like bathrooms and kitchens we brushed the walls using oil based enamel for a super smooth finish. All trim work was done in oil and brushed. There were no visible brush marks.
One of his customer's home was painted with lead in oil on the exterior. Al bought up all he could find when it was being phased out just for this client. The method of application was to brush it on two or three siding boards at a time and go all the way from one end to the other so there would be no overlaps. Damn that stuff was heavy. After 8 hours of bushing it on with a 5" brush, my arms were pretty sore.
Only recently, did I begin using water-based enamels. My preference is semi-gloss or velvet type finishes. If you really load the brush, tapping the paint in and brush a section without lifting the brush, it comes out pretty darn smooth. You should avoid going back over the area because the paint sets up really fast and you will get laps. Better to wait until the paint is fully set up and repaint the whole piece. -Always buy the highest quality brushes you can find.
Never heard about adding antifreeze. Seems like it defeats the whole purpose of using low VOC paints. Isn't antifreeze tinted with blue or pink? I think this might change to color of the paint ever so slightly.

Fuckin A. I'm scheduled for an outside repaint this weekend. Guy initially told me that quality doesn't matter ( ???) because he's just sprucing it up to sell it. Literally said if there's peeling paint that I should just paint right over it.
How about no.
So I get him to agree. Then he says don't bother with primer, just slap the white paint on.
It's gonna tannin bleed in 10 minutes, dude. We're priming.
Talked him down out of his tree and reduced the scope to essential areas to save him money. For every shoddy tradesman out there, there are 10 shoddy clients. A good 1/4 of people push you to do shitty work. Landlords. Real estate companies. City councils. Even people who intend to keep living there. Women are even worse than men. "Would it save money if we just...?" Yes it would and I'm not doing that. You have all the knowledge of a Day 1 work experience kid so kindly keep your brilliant ideas to yourself. We're not going to hold the house together with caulk and staples.
Better now. Whew.

Never heard about adding antifreeze. Seems like it defeats the whole purpose of using low VOC paints. Isn't antifreeze tinted with blue or pink? I think this might change to color of the paint ever so slightly.
The theory is that slowing the evaporation will let the paint gel like an oil would. Ethylene glycol is one way and I think a clear version is sold in paint shops at magic-stuff prices, but it's just antifreeze. Dose is supposed to be super low, like .2% or something, so color change would be negligible but I've heard it'll fuck with proper polymerization. Artists use glycerine as well but I never dared engage in such alchemy. I'm comfortable using dishsoap or triphosphate in drywall mud or interior renders but I'm more cautious when it comes to admixtures in paints.
Tbh I bought a lot of $ worth of Coronas recently. Dropped about $800 on brushes, plus a bunch of other stuff. They're good but it's still brushwork and not going to be up there with a sprayed finish. I like their Excaliber for latex and Chicago Loop for oil if you're in the market.
I'm in an area with a lot of older 'heritage' houses so those damn divided casement and sash windows are common, and the glazing putty is always failing. I tend to mask, prime, first color, then caulk tight, second color immediately over wet caulk, and peel the masking while second color and caulk are wet so nothing bridges. Comes up nice and straight and corrects the crappy putty. I'd love to find a nice slow drying caulk tho. Might get a caulk mixer so I can tint it for deeper colors too.
Anyway, I'll let you know what the AAA is like with latex. Got a job in about 6-7 weeks. Hoping to get a door rack built by then as well that will let me flip them and re-rack on my own.

Good points. I may be biased as I remember watching a 20/20 type show investigation on moving companies that would hold your things for ransom until you paid an increase. It appeared from the show that it was just outright extorting the customers who had all their stuff on their trucks. But I'm sure you are right, customers will tend to downplay what they want you to do and then later add things in expecting the price to stay the same. Had a friend in the auto repair industry that saw it on a daily basis.

I am so out of touch with all the newest advances and changes in the painting trade. Like I mentioned, it's been a whole lot of years since this was my profession. The last time I painted a room was almost 20 years ago. These days I stick to touchups and shorter ladders. Maybe it is like riding a bicycle or weight training....one you've done it, it comes back to you pretty quickly, notwithstanding new technologies.
I said I might do the painting for the next phase of the remodel, but there's also a chance I'll renege.

Well, there's nothing stopping you from posting a recent pic other than embarrassment.
And as long as I've been on this board, the over 10 thousand posts with many to do with
politics, culture and religion you deduce that I am a Democrat?
So I see that joke of his went right over your wig ::)

he has the nerve to shit talk the way other people look?
WTF am I looking at? that face, those ears, that hair, are you kidding me? Has this guy ever EVER been laid?
ps dickfuck Pellius
know how simple it was to get your real name? Find the location where Dale and George work, use simple social engineering and kaboom
be a fukin shame if someone were to email your work discussing your pedophiliac tendencies hey?
When have I shit talked the way others look unless they do it first? BTW, where's your pic? Exactly, another keyboard warrior hiding behind a computer. And, even at near sixty, I bet I have more hair on my head than your balding mug. Of course, we'll never know as you would be laughed off this board if you ever posted a pic.
Why don't you post my real name. I remember Josh, if you're not Josh yourself, claimed to have my real name and posted "something like it". If it's against board rules PM me. What are you afraid of? Even if it's my real name and I deny it you are sure to put the fear of God in me so what do you have to lose? If I get no response then there goes your credibility.

Serious vein-a-tion Pellius.
Have you always had veins like that?
No, i would say people started making comments when I was around 24-25 years old. I do believe it had something, if not everything, to do with training style as I started to lose them when I would go back to the traditional routines pushed in the magazines. I'm sure some is genetic though nobody else in my family is like that and I come from a family of nine and I wasn't born that way.

Okay, I give up. I've looked hard for the definition of Parmakai and could not find anything. I assume it means something like paramour or just romantic partner, but I hate assumptions because they can often be wrong. Par'Mach'kai perhaps? Are you a Trekker? ;)

The formal and correct spelling is "Par'Mach'kai" so you are correct. But you know how some things get bastardized and using that spelling makes one come across as a bit highbrow and pedantic.
I followed all the Star Trek series and was a big fan of the original series and a huge fan of "The Next Generation". Loved Picard and Data but Worf was all time favorite.
I wouldn't call myself a "Trekker" and have never been, nor have any desire to go, to those Star Trek expos, but the Klingon spirit runs strong in me -- lol.

Thank you. I learned two things as a result of your posts, the meaning of Par'Mach'Kai and that Trekker is preferred over Trekki. Plus what you shared regarding your personal life.

Yes, being called a "Trekki" kind of trivialize the cult. People always like to make fun of others involved in something they think is trivial. Like having big muscles -- lol.
I always found Data to be the most entertaining. Loved his deadpan responses. But it was Worf that would emotionally move me. That high sense of honor and bravery. They were a grim, cold and cruel people but some of the worse damage they would do to another Klingon was often not physical. During one fierce battle, the victor stood over the vanquished and instead of killing him, he pointed at him and said, "You have no honor!" Telling this to a Klingon in a position where he couldn't do a damn thing about it was worse than cutting out his heart.
There was this one episode where, to make a long story short, Worf, through no fault of his own (it was his father's) committed a grievous violation of Klingon code. Worf was sentenced to death which he freely accepted. But Picard intervened and sought an alternative. The council decided on an alternate punishment but Worf adamantly refuse! He said he would much rather die. But Picard prevailed and very reluctantly Worf agreed.
I wondered what the Klingon culture could come up with that was worse than death. Because of the cruel and remorseless culture that was the Klingons I was sure it was something so horrible that even a Klingon would prefer death.
And I was correct. Even from his own brother. Brought a tear to my eye.
