The end of an era in supplement company brands...
Effective Tuesday, June 26, 2018, Abbott made the decision to close the EAS business, which includes discontinuing all products marketed under the EAS brand, including EAS. EAS AdvantEdge and EAS Myoplex. All products marketed under the EAS brand will no longer be produced.
In October 2004, Abbott bought EAS for $ 320 million dollars. EAS was founded by Bill Phillips way back in 1990.
-
Used EAS products for years. SIP
-
Was just reading about Phillips and Connelly (Met-Rx) today. Used to like early MM2K (pre-internet) w/ Duchaine, TC Louma, Dr. X, etc.
Bill really cashed in when he sold EAS...
-
:-\.
EAS was my entry into the strength sports via Muscle Media 2000, and were the first supplements I bought on a consistent basis, and the ones I went back to when I dropped most of the fancy stuff. I'm a bit sad, at least as sad as you can be for a supplement brand.
-

Around $165 million I remember. While it was only around for a little bit as a hardcore company, it made a pretty big impact on the mid 90's bodybuilding scene.
-
Wasted a lot of money on HMB as a kid. Myoplex was solid though.
-
we need to buy all we can find so we can use EAS products for decades to come!!
-
I bought an entire "kit" of their creatine, vanadyl sulphate, hmb and whatever else came with it back in 93. It was a solid company until he sold it...now I think he lives in Hawaii living the good life. Can't blame the guy...
-
Once a GIANT now gone.
-
Do they still make Cynergenics ??
-

Actually, yes...cybergenics is still being made

He lives in Golden, CO where he grew up and he is married, you were close tho.

i remember when they pushed creatine hard, also they had some members from the denver broncos endorsing there stuff, this was when the broncos won two super bowls , they were good at marketing , remember when they did there body for life challenge, all you had to do was be taking two of there supplements

That is sad indeed. The first EAS product I ever used was Phosphagen HP back in 1996. I loaded with it back then and BOY!!!!!! I thought it was the holy grail. I gained 7 lbs in one week and 5 lbs the next week, from 215 to 227. And did it boost my strength.
I deemed creatine the crack of supplements. The first time you use it, it blows you away. I've never replicated those gains again. That can cost me $60 back then. But, at the time, I thought it was worth it.
It's hard to believe that similar products to Phosphagen HP cost $12-$15 these days.
The only bright side to this sad ending is all the Myoplex I can get on clearance (I hope).

The only one I remember was Shannon Sharpe. He's still in the ads in Bill Phillips' Sports Supplement Review 1997, which I got for Christmas from a friend over 20 years ago.

Also Bill Romanowski I remember a feature where he claimed to not eat food and sustained on supplements.
-
I remember Gabe Kapler, Brady Anderson, Elway (very short time) also had EAS deals. During the play offs I also remember a big stink being made by the sports press because lots of Broncos were rocking EAS turtle necks, and similar during interviews.
-
Actually, yes...cybergenics is still being made
Vince what type of advice would you have offered to the EAS parent company (to remain profitable) if they had asked?
Thank you.

And here we have all these stupid supplements started by all these pros!! Hope all of them goes under. Who wants Ronnie, Levrone, dexter, jay brands of crap
-
One of the more interesting rumors was that BP visited a certain Mr. Olympia back in the day, and jacked his roid stash, and was banned from the California scene for a number of years because of it. Later they made up, and this Mr. O would sometimes write in, and praise the mag. Never could figure out if it was sour grapes, but a lot of MM2K guys swore it was true.
Phillips also ran through most of the hotter fitness girls too.
Shawn Phillips on the infamous "Goldfinger" issue, which was the turning point from hardcore to fitness -
(http://www.getbig.com/magazine/mm2k/mm2k9707.jpg).
Also I can't find a copy of it, but Phillips clowns Roland Kickinger on one of the early versions of "Body of Work".
-

If only Melvin had stayed with EAS, maybe he would not have needed to be so desperate...it could have been rebuilt on his back.
-
Betagen was the first supplement I ever purchased, that was good stuff.
-
Phosphagen was one of the few creatines that worked for me.
R.I.P.
-
Thing is, supplements are just sticking a label on a box for material some company produces to sell to anyone interested. Not one supplement company makes their own whey, creatine,...
Take whey for example, how many companies put origin of whey on the label? If it says something like Optipep, then it is from Carrbery Ireland and you know what it is. But then they add different compounds to "enhance" the whey which is not really needed, just filler.
A concentrate from milk that can be from China or who knows from where, no thanks...
Go down for the list:

-
Back in the day, Bill Phillips was a HUGE inspiration for Paul. He was frequently talking about being the next Bill Philips. Then he started Muscletech and the rest is history. Go to a mainstream store like Wallmart and Gardiner is dominating the protein shelf space.
-
Really...embarrassed with $165 mill. Lol.
of course what's the point of being rich if you're weak and small?
what kinda dude goes on a bodybuilding msg board and claim money matters more than size and strength? in other words, you look up to nerds who made it in the financial business.
please leave this msg board RIGHT NOW
-
Also I can't find a copy of it, but Phillips clowns Roland Kickinger on one of the early versions of "Body of Work".
Believe that was the "body for life" video.
Bills doing a voice over talking about "I dunno... It just doesn't do it for me anymore" while in the audience of a bbing show, distancing himself from the "hardcore" bodybuilding scene/Market & moving toward the "attainable" avg physique guys/girls... Same thing when they dropped the "2k" from MM2K & moved away from the steroid talk. Blechman also jumped on the anti-steroid bandwagon with"All Natural Muscular Development" & turned their backs on "hardcore" bbing & pushed "little" Ron Coleman the same way EAS pushed Danny Hester.
Then shows bill at golds Venice taking to Roland where Roland says something about he wants to be a movie star and bills reply is "...and you think 'xxxxx' is gonna do that for you?" Or something to that effect.
I recall that scene as I'd watched that vhs dozens of times. When they were advertising free copies of that VHS, I actually called EAS Or MM, whoever it was,& asked if I could have a couple dozen copies or however many I got, & sold them in h.s. for $10-20 each lol. By the time I graduated & moved out I still had a box of at least 10 left that I couldn't sell & just tossed'em in the trash.

One fart powder is retired...another crops up somewhere else.
-
wasnt eas pretty expensive
yet people on getbig bought that shit, swears by it.
did they have a single original product?
-
You sure this is for real? EAS website is still up and running.
-
EAS Whey powder was a good deal at Sam's Club.
Bought it there quite awhile ago.
They stopped selling it for some reason.

That is incorrect.
I have this issue.
That is Clark Bartram on the cover, not Shawn Phillips.

Yeah, I made a mistake. I remember it mainly for being the change over issue years ago. Something happened back with the the other issue too, I can't remember what it is though.

anyone remember in the body for life video, bill and shawn laughing about how they stopped traffic by posing in the middle of the street?

Abbott has managed to screw up a lot of product lines by changing "recipes" in an effort to reduce cost.

.
Right at the start, then at 46 minutes in, Bill is running around mid-town in Hot Skins booty shorts. There must be different cuts though, because I can't find Kickinger in it.
-

did they have a single original product?
They had two: Phosphagen (creatine monohydrate) and Phosphagain (milk and egg protein with creatine mixed in it).
Phosphagain was marketed as the first "low calorie mass gainer, back in the early-mid 90s when weight gainers were popular and pushing the calorie envelope (Mega Mass 2000, Gainers Fuel 2500, Perfect Weight Gain 1100, etc).
You were supposed to load with it, like regular creatine. But, it cost a fortune.
They later made Phosphagen HP (creatine with dextrose). I told my story of when I used it earlier in this thread.

TC Louma was one annoying prick. Arrogance without substance is the worst kind. This dude was a preening overbearing cuck.
And that guy that Bill supposed to be having a hand in turning pro... the Stoney Grimes or whoever it was, never made a dent.
-
Bill Phillips Dad was the actual owner of EAS.

Most bodybuilding related supplements are just fucking snake oil anyfuckingway so I could care less.

During the Body for Life thing, he changes the rules, and gives all 10 finalists Corvettes and $50,000 spokesman contracts. A couple of years ago they were going to run it again, but I don't know what happened with that -

has AIDS, and that threw a monkey wrench in the whole thing when it was reveled. The contest got sidetrack with contestants just wanting to give him the car as a goodwill touchy feely gesture, so they decided to do the Corvette thing instead just to be fair. He later wrote a book that talked a bit about the whole contest - http://books.google.com/books?id=OafHjavjmSQC&pg=PA159&lpg=PA159&dq=bill+phillips+lamborghini&source=bl&ots=WTgp-wTk5_&sig=UeriEJuM4B7c2eoibYxKoAWkXb4&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwix9r-I9fzbAhUutlkKHTa1BlMQ6AEIVjAJ#v=onepage&q=bill%20phillips%20lamborghini&f=false .

Yeah. Body for Life I remember watching that with Phillips contest. Good times for bodybuilding back then you had Duchaine, legit steroids, ultimate orange, and none of this stupid ass Instagram model shit.
-
Update- They were actually given used Corvettes according to Anthony Ellis, who's website claims he gained #300 pounds of Muscle in 3 months - http://www.fastmusclegain.com/ :).
T-Mag wrote a "where are they now?" years ago, transcribed here - http://www.bodyforlife-tracker.com/weightloss-topic/59247/page3 .

Yes. A friend from the gym "Brad" was one of the winners. Had to sell the Corvette just to pay the taxes on his winning prize.

The guy Seidman used them in the past, and that caused an argument whether they should grade it on a handicap because of his muscle memory.
This guy, Anthony Ellis was also accused of using them, and had trouble with a polygraph test when asked about them, but he claimed EAS added that in there for more drama -

It sounds like the whole EAS contest was nothing but trouble. :o
-
I lived in New Zealand back then, was a student and their supps were expensive beyond my means.
Id just placed 2nd at the NABBA nationals, in the U21's class, and sent Bill a VHS of my comp seeking sponsorship.
This was just before the Body for Life thing, and move away from bodybuilding.
A few weeks later i received a Fed Box stacked with supps, well over 500USD retail worth...or about 1200 locally. And a bright purple Team EAS jacket.
The letter said they were looking at building a small team and would keep in touch.
The team never eventuated but every cpl of months for about six months I got care packages, mainly myoplex deluxe, which was delicious, lotsa phospagems (little creatine gummies), and a few boxes of bars etc.
I felt like a millionaire for that short period of time

Blood transfusion. Looked him up a second ago, still alive and fit, been sick for some crazy number of years like 35.

In that case, he will be saved.

By the way, does anyone have proof that they're closing their doors? I can't find anything about it on Google.

I can't find anything either, but I'm not doubting yet. Some of EAS's Twitters is gone, their Instagram hasn't been updated in a week and half ( www.instagram.com/easmyoplex/ ) , and while they are still answering questions here and there on Facebook in the last few weeks, people are saying they aren't restocking it at dealers.
I wonder if it might be a big rebranding, they signed a big deal with these guys just a bit ago -

Anthony Ellis is a scumbag but my thing is this....EAS at the time when they were running that contest was advertised in "Muscle Media 2000". Obviously, most people who read MM2k used steroids.
-
Looking back at the contest there is no way those guys are clean. The contest wasn't a year it was like 12 weeks wasn't it? Gullible public. Filt.

Anthony Ellis is a scumbag but my thing is this....EAS at the time when they were running that contest was advertised in "Muscle Media 2000". Obviously, most people who read MM2k used steroids.
c'mon VVV dont leave us hanging, why do you think Anthony is a scumbag?
-
Vince what type of advice would you have offered to the EAS parent company (to remain profitable) if they had asked?
Thank you.
EAS actually went out of business when the company to Abbott Laboratories. When Bill sold it to North Castle, they migrated from the MM2k era to the more "natural physique" era but the products pretty much remained their hardcore integrity. Once Abbott got ahold of it.....well..."Experimental And Applied Sciences" became "Energy, Athletics, Strength", swag was no longer given out, products were "changed" in order to meet the pricing demands of major retail outlets like Walmart, Walgreens, Target, etc.
EAS dropped dead in 2004 and its existed since then as a generic brand. For it to go out of business is meaningless to me. I do have some great memories...got good swag from them, the original Myoplex was fucking awesome as well as Betagen. It was easy to get free stuff because the money was just flowing in at the company. You simply write the company and you'll have a nice box show up at your door.
BTW, most of the Grand Prize winners did pretty well afterwards and most of them milked their fame to the fullest with some of them getting continued employment with EAS until Bill sold the company. Other than Anthony Ellis, everyone else operated with some level of integrity.
-
c'mon VVV dont leave us hanging, why do you think Anthony is a scumbag?
He was running some sort of paid membership site that I didn't find too honest......not to mention that he failed his polygraph test in the contest although it really didn't make a difference considering it was at the time when the magazine was promoting steroid. I just never liked the guy period but he made a shitload of money overall

You can see it here - http://www.fastmusclegain.com/ . While I never actually saw any of his material, it's an old school "web ring" type fitness site that was popular in the early 2000's. I forget exactly how it worked, but it was popular with a lot of small and medium sized trainers and fitness celebs. You joined it, and it had various similar templates that you put your company name into, then you found yourself endorsing other members, and they, in turn, would endorse you.
For the customer, it usually offered various cookie cutter programs, invitations to join secret forums, and discounts on books and supplements.

Bingo, was going to explain it but had to go to work. Self endorsed bullshit, template fitness plans, etc. It was just garbage

I was a paying customer to your momma but not to this venture. She gave some great headache
-
You guys don`t want to understand that protein powders are mainly from China. You arrange the amount of money you want your "product" to be sold at so they use ingredients for you to be able to sell at the said price.
You can even buy everything in a package and you just choose your stickers. Practically all of whey does not have source of origin listed or the percentage of it in container. If it is 100% whey it means that the whey that is in it is 100% whey, not the quantity. Like Mcdonalds 100% beef, same deal...
I`m pretty sure people wouldn`t want to buy milk from China and yet, they buy and eat a concentrate from milk of questionable origin and production quality...
-
I don’t think there has ever been a brand as in demand as EAS was back in the late 90’s. I don’t think that brand recognition will ever be recreated.
