This warrants it's own thread. Hendrix was a sloppy blues hack guitarist. Mediocre at best in terms of musical proficiency. He had horrible taste in music. Turned his back on the Blacks and worshipped the White man such as Bob Dylan and The Beatles. His cover versions were really shitty. Feedback isn't music and pretending to play with one's teeth is foolish.

LOL
-
Not overrated influential wise
There were far better technical players of his day
The stones worshipped black blues n jazz players
I met Satriani and Vai in the summer of 90. Guess who they worshipped? ...... Prince
-
Yes he was, as is/was every other musician ever... Not that hard of a thing to do, honestly...
-
If Hendrix was White he would have gone largely unnoticed.

Like Rory Gallagher...
(I mean, Rory was Irish, amazing, drunk, pills, etc and didnt care for the limelight) but he was amazing...

Bullshit. One of the greatest guitar players. Now his singing, sucks ass.

Actually, no. Not an exceptional guitarist by any stretch of the imagination.

Even falcon made songs with little to no talent

I urge everyone here to ignore this thread because it is absolute horse shit.
If Hendrix doesn't suit your musical taste then so be it, but to call him an overrated, sloppy, hack, or medicore is fucking insane. Eat a big bag of shit.

Who is Jimi Hendrix-Vastly?
Is he related to Jimi Hendrix?

Ever try to play a Hendrix song on guitar, correctly? Trying one once, will tell you all you need to know about him musically.
-
I am not a fan of Hendrix’s music but you have to be deaf and blind not to see how he changed music forever.

he was one of the early trial balloons of the current SWJ marxist infection. He fit all the "oppressed" labels and checked all of the counter culture boxes. Black, poor, anti-Vietnam, interracial breeding, pro drugs.
Everything needed to start the undermining of traditional western values.

Bingo

I've read a number of stories from musicians from that time frame that hung with Jimi. I can't recall a single one that thought he was overrated. On the contrary, I have read a number of stories from respected musicians who were very impressed with his playing and not just his electric guitar but acoustic as well. But I am willing to leave all that behind because the OP thinks he is overrated.

Depends on how he’s being viewed.
From the perspective of his generation and his overall impact on the burgeoning culture of electric guitar, no, he is not overrated.
The man was creative, spirited and unafraid to push traditional sonic boundaries.
However, if Hendrix is being considered from a pure vantage point of technical ability and such, Jimi is absolutely nowhere. By the late 1970s, he was being destroyed by many players. Forget the eighties. That decade is arguably the “great leap forward” for rock guitar virtuosity.
Hendrix is monumental in the instruments’ rise to its current status as wizardly spectacle. He was in possession of musical talents, absolutely.
His influence, (select) catalogue, and, again, impact, isn’t overrated, but his actual facility on the electric guitar most certainly is.
Jimi’s music and playing hasn’t ever done a thing for me. For decades I’ve tried and tried to consider changing my opinion, but then I listen to some of his playing and I think, Nope.
-
Your mother.
Your mother is a woman of ill repute. She took many lovers and she's uncertain which one of them fathered you. Her vagina smells like aged stockfish, she's missing three teeth, and her credit score is 450.

I remember dancing to one of their tunes at summer camp when I was 8. Great times.

Hendrix was obviously gay. What straight man would write the lyric “Excuse me while I kiss this guy”??

The classically trained technical wizards are usually out there doing way too much. I judge guitarists by the sound of the notes that they play, not the difficulty of the notes they play. Just my opinion.
It's like in basketball. Allen Iverson dribbles the ball 45 times and dances around his defender to score 2 points. Shaq catches the ball, takes 2 steps and dunks it for 2 points. More complicated doesn't always mean better.
Or in film. Star Wars Episode I had complex cgi graphics and digitally created characters.............. .was it better than The Empire Strikes Back?

I honestly think Paul McCartney has him beat in terms of talent. He played all instruments, including drums.

He faked playing the drums

Its all about what people like. Ive played bass, guitar, keys, and lead vox in bands.
My kids play every instrument without even really truing once they grasped it in 3rd grade.
My daughters CD just came out w/ Beyone's Sax player (Jazz stuff), just easy for us...

Takes years if not decades of focus on an instrument to achieve mastery. What you're describing is something very different than musicianship.

He faked playing the drums
Yeah- what a faker he was ::)

Yeah- what a faker he was ::)
That proves my point. He doesn't know how to hold the sticks. His wrists are stiff and he is has no technique. Check out some Jim Chapin instructional videos on YouTube, particularly where he teaches the Moeller Technique.

I was playing drums probably before you were born. The statement wasn't that he was a Buddy Rich level player, you said he faked playing the drums. You can argue all day with your moronic "He wasn't holding the sticks right" crap, but you were just shown your ass.. admit it and move on.
-
prince was the most talented musician to walk the earth, he could play every instrument fluently, and wrote all his songs.
One of the things that made Prince great was his creativity. No one cares about how many instruments an artist can play if the songs suck.
I've heard musicians say most of Prince's guitar parts are fairly easy to play, but when they do they doesn't sound half as good as the original. It's not just about what you play, how it's played makes a huge difference.
As for his skills as a drummer, he was an okay drummer. Good enough for getting the job done on most pop songs, but he was far better on (bass) guitar and keyboards. Candy Dulfer mentioned he played sax rather poorly, which was surprising since no one even knew he played horns at all. AFAIK he never played sax on official records, only demo's.
Anyway it's all relative. Quincy said it best:
A lot of Prince fans were pissed when they saw that clip, but when someone like Quincy who has worked with the best musicians thinks you're an okay piano player, well IMO that's a compliment. He's comparing Prince to people who played piano all day, every day.

If you are a drummer and you think that video was impressive then you are probably a lousy drummer or more likely lying. There is no proficient drummer who would watch that video and state that Prince can play drums.
-
https://www.moderndrummer.com/2005/10/prince-2/
Meaningless interview. Prince always used a drum machine or studio drummers. He can't hold the sticks and has no flexibility in his wrists, and has virtually no independence between his hands. Not a real drummer. They tried the same nonsense with McCartney.

McCartney did play drums on several of his hit songs. He played drums on the entire "Band On The Run" LP because half his band quit to avoid recording the LP in Nigeria. The band members were smart in doing so... Paul and Linda got robbed and they was almost killed (naïve lib-tards). Paul can hold a beat and do a few fills, but technically he sucks.

Don't move the goal posts. Nowhere did I say I thought that was impressive. That wasn't the initial argument. You said he faked playing drums. More than one person has said he played on his first albums. All we have now is you stating he faked playing drums, while we have video of him playing, he has played on stage with other performers as well, George Clinton to name one, his drumming appears on top selling albums.. so Shizzo, what have you done?
-

Yes he is faking playing the drums in that video. Merely holding the sticks like hammers and wacking away at drums and cymbals doesn't make him a drummer. Does he have a better sense of rhythm than perhaps an 11 year autistic mongoloid? Perhaps. But he's not a drummer. Far from it.

Love the spectacularly-ignorant who make the ridiculous statement that Prince is the most talented musician to have ever lived.
First, it’s not something that can be qualified, and, second ... Only a ‘tard would suggest such utter and incomprehensible horseshit.

"MD sat down with the musical genius before the soundcheck for his recent performance in Hartford, Connecticut. Prince was relaxed, thoughtful, and happy to talk drums."
"Prince: Sometimes not at all. I always record the drums first’that’s real important. I like to record fast. Sometimes the mic’s aren’t perfectly placed or the tuning isn’t right. It’s just a feel thing. One of my strengths is, when I’m playing it all myself, I can make it sound like a total band when I’m done."

Modern Drummer is in the business of selling magazines and making money from advertisers. Prince is not a drummer. Hence, his use of the Linn drum machine.

Stevie Wonder is the man when it comes to playing all the instruments on a song. He grew up as a Motown artist and got lessons from all of those musicians.

Ok, I know you are an idiot, but I will expend the energy regardless to address your stupid, almost kindergarten posts..
I watched a clinic recently put on by what YOU would consider a 1st class drummer. He addressed the very thing you are trying in your caveman like style to bring up. In his case, he addressed morons saying that Ringo Starr was not a good drummer. He played some popular songs by the Beetles and then he demonstrated how a top notch 1st class drummer would play those songs.. and they sucked. the point he was making is that the genius in their drumming was that they played not to their particular strengths, they played exactly what the song needed. Trying to imagine most beetles songs with any other drum beat is stupid. CCR.. Doug Clifford was not the most technically savvy drummer. I can play his drum parts note for note.. BUT.. the genius of providing exactly what the song needed is the key. So.. Dennis Wilson.... I agree, there are better drummers. I also agree with every drum critic that he did exactly what those songs needed. Now I don't expect you Brian, or whoever you are, to really understand that.. so I will put it in lesser terms.. AC/DC... Tons can out drum Phill Rudd on the drums,, But Phil played exactly what was needed. That's what makes them famous... Do you kind of get it? a little?

Dennis Wilson was the REAL Beach Boy: the Beach Boy who was actually racing hot rod, surfing and banging chicks by the score before he was a rock star (and he was a rock star by age 15.) . He was Brian Wilson’s chief muse. Those songs were very much about the nerdy Gershwin-geek Brian Wilson fantasizing that he was his handsome wild brother who was living the myths that Wilson spun on records.
His raspy baritone voice brought a wild (sometimes flat) rock and roll element to the Beach Boys vocal blend, which in itself is an instantly recognizable and absolutely inimitable sound.
AS a drummer, while he will never go down in any top ten lists — drums were not his primary instrument, he was a pianist, primarily— in the early days he wasn’t bad. You can look at live performances on youtube and see for youself that he was a spirited and energetic rock drummer who kept time well and generally played what was right for the song — and the parts that Brian Wilson wrote were by no means always just a four on the floor simple beat. He played drums on these well-known Beach Boys singles.
“ “Surfin’ Safari/409”
“Shut Down”
"Surfer Girl/Little Deuce Coupe”
“Be True To Your School/In My Room”
“Little Saint Nick”
“Fun, Fun, Fun”
“I Get Around/Don’t Worry Baby”
“When I GRow Up (To Be a Man)/She Knows Me Too Well”
“Dance Dance Dance/The Warmth of the Sun”
“She’s So Good to Me”
“Girl Don’t Tell Me”
“Wild HOney”
“Do It Again”
“I Can Hear Music”
“Rock and Roll Music”
“Honkin’ Down the Highway”
“Good Timin’”
On some of those songs (“Fun, Fun, Fun” and “I get Around”) there were two drummers, Hal Blaine and Dennis, and of course Blaine or Frankie Capp or Jim Gordon played on most of their baroque pop masterpieces like Pet Sounds, SMiLE and Friends.
Dude did enough to make it..... and you?

I don't think they were struggling in 2005.
Prince on drums:
-
Modern Drummer is in the business of selling magazines and making money from advertisers. Prince is not a drummer. Hence, his use of the Linn drum machine.
His first 2 albums were recorded in the 70's. :D
By the time he started using the LM1 he already had a band, including drummer Bobby Z. :P

Evidence Prince couldn't play drums - "Because I say so"
Not a very compelling argument considering the evidence he could..

No need to try again . Prince was not a drummer.

Would have been something if they had jammed together a little. Wonder if they ever met? both had respect for all music, and were very mature, cool guys. Santana needs to get back to his roots.

Brady and Bellichick might take issue with those comments, not to mention Gronk himself. ;)

Consider the source. Brian Pillows is functionally retarded at best.

it seems they met several times, but I've found nothing about them playing together.
UV: I believe you met Hendrix two or three times - one of the times was when he was recording 'Room Full of Mirrors' and you've talked about that in other interviews. When were the other times that you met him?
CS: At the Berkeley Community Centre [30 May 1970]. I think those were the only two times that I remember. I saw him at Santa Clara Fairgrounds in San Jose in '69 [25 May 1969] but I didn't get to talk to him then - I still didn't know him. I think that was the best concert that I ever heard him play. He had supreme confidence that day. There was nothing in his mind about business of chicks or anything that I could tell because he just came out like Michael Tyson, when Michael Tyson would knock guys [out] in 3 seconds. There's a certain 'stance'. That's what Miles Davis said: 'I can tell whether a person can play just by the way he stands, you know.' He had a certain stance, man. He was all over that Strat and had supreme confidence, that's all I can say.

Are you a musician? Do you play guitar? Thought so.

Not overrated influential wise
There were far better technical players of his day
The stones worshipped black blues n jazz players
I met Satriani and Vai in the summer of 90. Guess who they worshipped? ...... Prince
and Hendrix... In fact, Satriani cites him as his all time favorite and biggest inspiration so much so, that he refuses to ever learn to play a Hendrix song as he would view it as sacrilege.

Well, maybe just once, nearly 30 years ago.

Invariably, there is always a small percentage of people who for whatever reason, make idiotic statements about bands or musicians who are world renown and have made a name for themselves. You can take the most accomplished musician alive, sold millions of records, is admired by their peers, and you can bet there will be a nobody somewhere, who thinks it makes them somehow less of a nobody loser, to proclaim them overrated. It has been going on since before Elvis, and it will continue well past Prince. For some reason, they believe their claim, based on nothing but personal opinion, overcomes the mass of evidence that they are just stupid people. This thread is a prime example. :)

Sometimes Coltrane's sax was out of intonation. So overrated.

i never hear his music on the radio , tv or movies , doesn't seem like he left much of an impression . . . queen , elvis, beetles etc on the other hand are all iconic with immediately recognizable tunes for most people .

Did you know KC, of KC and the Sunshine band wrote the McCrae hit in 1974 "Rock Your Baby" that netted him a cool $798,000 check and his co writer just over $250,000? I didn't until I saw him in concert last Friday and he told us the story.

Did not know that. That tune is an object lesson for rhythm guitarists. Well, at least for that time.

From the story he told, they had a drum machine on a synthesizer , and they would write songs off that.. they hired a guitarist for some crazy low amount and did the demo. It got picked up. At the time, his mom was on his ass about getting a real job. When he got the almost $800K check back in 74, he told his mom that maybe she should back off. She did.

His concert was interesting. For me, growing up in the 70's his albums were part of the soundtrack to my teens. I can remember to this day some good times in my friends car listening to his music. But his voice today is completely shot. It is mid range and hoarse. I knew that going in.. But when he came out, 30 lbs overweight with a short haircut, and started performing, his passion for the music, his enthusiasm infected us all and the whole crowd except the dude next to me, spent the entire concert or most of it, on our feet jamming to the classic songs. So I would rather hear the flaws in a performers voice, than a lip sync version of an artist I admire. I learned that with Gordon Lightfoot. I went to see him in Austin 2 years ago, and the rich melodic voice I grew up listening to was just a shell of itself. But I loved it.

I saw Don McClean at a small venue about 10 years ago. Great show and stories, and he had us all sing along to "This Little Light of Mine."
