Sounds more like you need a ridge vent to prevent heat in your attic from building up and causing the ice to form in the first place. I had similar problems when I lived in northern NY. The ridge vent stopped it ( and additional attic insulation)

Sounds more like you need a ridge vent to prevent heat in your attic from building up and causing the ice to form in the first place. I had similar problems when I lived in northern NY. The ridge vent stopped it ( and additional attic insulation)
You're attic should be the SAME TEMP IT IS OUTSIDE.
Meaning: If its 80 outside...its 80 in your attic. An attic is not a livable space.
Gable, ridge, fans...whatever...but his main problem is INSULATION especially at the floor of the attic because HEAT MUST BE ESCAPING.

Had pretty bad ice dam damage. Put a heating cable on the roof and it hasn't been a problem since. A possible issue is finding a power supply, but I had enough extra slack to run the extra cable down a drainpipe, and I just plug it into a garage outlet.

The SLOPE OF A ROOF has nothing to do with it. Why? Because even if snow is on your roof...if your ATTIC is sealed...it shouldn't be a problem...even though in Montreal on a sunny winter day it has been known to melt snow that is 6 inches...BUT...gutters should be clear and not plugged.

FYI, junior, I was in the commercial roofing industry for over 20 years as an apprentice, journeyman, foreman and superintendent. After that, commercial roof consultant, commercial roof systems design and commercial inspector, after that, residential and commercial contractor. Last of my major jobs (consultating, design and inspection) were the Ford and GM plants throughout the mid-west and east. Last Foreman and Superintendent jobs were overseeing the roofing systems at the LA Convention Center and the then, First Interstate Building in LA. Feel free to state your roofing expertise again?

Coach these are good points. Alex is providing us a lot of information as well. Getbig is one of the best places to learn about anything. I think Henda, Robcguns and Falcon should weigh in as well so we can get a real consensus.
That said do you think based on the events of this past weekend and their reported financial status, Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell would be better off in commercial or residential roofing or removing HVAC ductwork from older homes?

I'll walk with you on this topic. Started my biz career with the pink panther company and have built four houses in NH.
If the roof is warm the damns will build. Proper attic insulation-R40 and venting (roof and soffit) will keep the roof cold and stop damns from building. Also make sure anything which penetrates the ceiling is sealed (caulked etc.) and any access to the attic is sealed and insulated if possible.

A lot depends on the situation with your house...
Is it a tear down?...If it is a tear down, I assume you don't want to put a lot of capital into it, but you don't want to "hurry up" the deterioration.
If it is a tear down...then I would say go ahead a use the heat cables...
If it is a house with a future, then I would say the insulation and re-roof with a ridge vent would be what to do.

Slapper was just trying to figure out a way to keep ice off of his NOW not when we're a few weeks away from winter. Precautions should have taken place during the summer months or before it gets cold enough for ice to form.

They have a thermostat that comes on when it is near freezing or below.
Also, you only connect them to power when there is ice to deal with...

I never said he was wrong, but like said earlier, this is a given especially considering what region of the country Slapper is in, more than likely code would call for it. As far as the cable, like you I’ve seen it ran along the eves. I asked what the pitch of the roof was for structural purposes because of the weight of the snow/ice. He needs to get the weight off of the eves where the dam is forming. If it’s solid ice and can’t be loosened best bet would be to higher a roofer and torch the ice off the roof, then install the cable.
After the snow season, go back and re-evaluate the insulation rating and upgrade if necessary. Same the venting system, check and reseal flashing penetrations especially the flashing around the chimney.
If his roof is a 4/12, that’s shit ton of weight on that structure even though I’m sure it’s to code.

Snow on a roof should only melt once the outside temperature rises although this is rarely the case even with modern insulation recommendations, most roofs are inadequately insulated.
To insulate a roof adequately i like to first strip all the old shit out then cover the entire loft floor with reflective foil insulation using a staple gun to secure to the joists and tape all joints with silver foil tape, this also works as a vapour barrier then simply Cover with standard loft roll insulation in as many layers as needed to a total minimum thickness of 300mm, each layer should run at 90 degrees to the last one so the joints are staggered. Install an insulated loft hatch if it diesent already have one. This is relatively inexpensive and can be done in a day and will reduce heat loss enough to prevent snow melting. House will be far more comfortable in the hot summer months also.

When you say most parents pay for college what do you mean? 70% of all college students have student loan debt so they're paying for this on their own. Even if the other 30% were all financed by parents/family, and they're not because of grants and scholarships, that's not most.
Also my roof has loose blow in insulation, but it's a steep pitch so the ice melts down.

Yes, adding insulation will help a lot to reduce ice dams. Coach is correct in asking what type of roof / style the home has. An existing bungalow type home where the second floor is built into the roof line will never be as well insulated as a ranch type home where the roof sits on top of the first level (easy to insulate entire attic) and has soffit vents along the eaves and a ridge vent as mentioned. Many homes do not have soffit vents along the eaves (you need a large overhang for this) and a ridge vent actually is useless without soffit vents.
If the house is a tear down then I agree just adding electrical wires will help as a short term solution. Or you can rake the roof during heavy snow falls to get most of it off the roof so it will not melt / freeze to create ice dams. Another option is to turn the thermostat down a bit. You can wear sweaters if it feels to cold. Just don't turn it down too much where the water pipes are in danger of freezing.

I have seen many older homes that do not have soffit vents. And some homes have knee wall attics and another attic at the top. If the second floor is built into the roof line there will be many clipped ceilings and if you have 2x6 rafters you cannot insulate that sloped part of the ceiling. You can add baffles but need to keep it open so the knee wall attic can vent up to the upper attic in the absence of a soffit vent. Some older homes can be modified to have soffit vents along the eaves but it is a big job that will not be cheap.
Hey Fallsview, you are absolutely correct good and proper insulation along with good venting will eliminate ice dams. You are also 100% correct that the attic has to be unconditioned and the same temperature as the outside. You want an ice cold attic in the winter.
Now there are other things you can do with a warmer attic. You can install a metal roof on cross battens. There will be an air gap between the metal roof panels and the sheathing and the heat will not transfer as easily from the warm attic to the metal roof. That will also help to reduce ice dams.
Fallsview, what are you going to do if you want an insulated cathedral ceiling? You go with a super insulated, unvented attic space. In this case the attic is living space since it is a cathedral ceiling. You insulate the entire outside of the roof with rigid foam insulation and you can add another layer of unfaced insulation on the interior that will dry out. If it is faced insulation moisture could travel from the exterior and get trapped because of the vapor barrier and that could lead to rotted sheathing.

For my own 2nd level addition I intend to drop the ceiling on hanger rods to create a fat insulated space. Retarded fat. Like 2-3 feet. (Walls are going to be similarly beefy and I'll use the reveal over windows and doors to house automated insul-curtains.) I'll install fiber cement between the rafters, giving a 3 inch plenum between the sheet and underside of the roof, to let natural convection evacuate warmer air. If I don't use clay tile or slate then I'll vent the eaves and ridge, but I detest corrugated metal. Ain't nobody using ply and tar paper here.
