A lot depends on the situation with your house...

Is it a tear down?...If it is a tear down, I assume you don't want to put a lot of capital into it, but you don't want to "hurry up" the deterioration.

If it is a tear down...then I would say go ahead a use the heat cables...

If it is a house with a future, then I would say the insulation and re-roof with a ridge vent would be what to do.

Not blue collar....I Am A Jack Of All Trades...MASTER OF THEM ALL.

You see when you have an IQ of over 140 and a photographic memory...you pick up things a lot quicker than your regular Joe "Plumber".

Coach says that he did that type of work for 20 years...well that's another thing you weren't good at.

Take for example Vince Goodrum: Lives in a trailer...which is similar to the 1977 Hi Top Chevy Van with the Viking mural painted on the side.

Vince offered his remedy of keeping his closet cool in the hot NC summer's. Place ice cube tray at head height. Put standing fan in back of ice cube tray. Sit down in front sipping sweet tea...enjoy.

Blue Collar work isn't ROCKET SCIENCE. Its only ROCKET SCIENCE to those who don't have much brain power.

This is what the supplement industry tries to do to dummies and overweight people. They make it complicated so you buy their supps or programs. "If you're not eating the right foods for your body type, you'll never lose weight".  BULLSHIT...reduce the amount of food going into your mouths. Its pretty simple.

Now you may have learned something...but with the attention span of a wood sprite I'm not holding my breath.

Hi Dan.

Who else would have put you through school besides yourself?

When you say you agree with Fallsy does that mean you disagree with coach?

Thanks

Most people with "high IQ's" generally don't have a sense of reality or common sense. Case in point is this thread and the other one that you got owned in. Your "mensa" brain couldn't figure out that it was mostly genetics.

Slapper was just trying to figure out a way to keep ice off of his NOW not when we're a few weeks away from winter. Precautions should have taken place during the summer months or before it gets cold enough for ice to form.

They have a thermostat that comes on when it is near freezing or below.

Also, you only connect them to power when there is ice to deal with...

I never said he was wrong, but like said earlier, this is a given especially considering what region of the country Slapper is in, more than likely code would call for it. As far as the cable, like you I’ve seen it ran along the eves. I asked what the pitch of the roof was for structural purposes because of the weight of the snow/ice. He needs to get the weight off of the eves where the dam is forming. If it’s solid ice and can’t be loosened best bet would be to higher a roofer and torch the ice off the roof, then install the cable.

After the snow season, go back and re-evaluate the insulation rating and upgrade if necessary. Same the venting system, check and reseal flashing penetrations especially the flashing around the chimney.

If his roof is a 4/12, that’s shit ton of weight on that structure even though I’m sure it’s to code.

Snow on a roof should only melt once the outside temperature rises although this is rarely the case even with modern insulation recommendations, most roofs are inadequately insulated.

To insulate a roof adequately i like to first strip all the old shit out then cover the entire loft floor with reflective foil insulation using a staple gun to secure to the joists and tape all joints with silver foil tape, this also works as a vapour barrier then simply Cover with standard loft roll insulation in as many layers as needed to a total minimum thickness of 300mm, each layer should run at 90 degrees to the last one so the joints are staggered. Install an insulated loft hatch if it diesent already have one. This is relatively inexpensive and can be done in a day and will reduce heat loss enough to prevent snow melting. House will be far more comfortable in the hot summer months also.

Bro congrats.

When you say most parents pay for college what do you mean? 70% of all college students have student loan debt so they're paying for this on their own. Even if the other 30% were all financed by parents/family, and they're not because of grants and scholarships, that's not most.

Also my roof has loose blow in insulation, but it's a steep pitch so the ice melts down.

Yes, adding insulation will help a lot to reduce ice dams. Coach is correct in asking what type of roof / style the home has. An existing bungalow type home where the second floor is built into the roof line will never be as well insulated as a ranch type home where the roof sits on top of the first level (easy to insulate entire attic) and has soffit vents along the eaves and a ridge vent as mentioned. Many homes do not have soffit vents along the eaves (you need a large overhang for this) and a ridge vent actually is useless without soffit vents.

If the house is a tear down then I agree just adding electrical wires will help as a short term solution. Or you can rake the roof during heavy snow falls to get most of it off the roof so it will not melt / freeze to create ice dams. Another option is to turn the thermostat down a bit. You can wear sweaters if it feels to cold. Just don't turn it down too much where the water pipes are in danger of freezing.

Coach is WRONG. Regardless of any home...they all have attics for a reason. Newer homes are built tight...usually they have their systems in the attics but you run into problems either way.

You are wrong...95% of homes built throughout the Northeast HAVE SOFFIT VENTS...AND RIDGE VENTS.

Insulation is the number one cause of Ice Damns. Period.

Now LOG OFF GETBIG.

The ventilation in the roof space is to prevent the roof timbers rotting and nothing to do with retaining heat/insulation

Bingo! An attic should be the same temp it is outside.
