i spent all my money on bitcoins, so now im down to my last dollars... im sure things will pick up soon, but anyway, if you, like me, only had money for one pair of dumbbells what weight would you pick?
-
If I was down to my last dollars I sure wouldn't buy dumbbells with it.
-
50kg
So I can do bicep curls regularly

Basically hit everything.

I wouldn't wanna go straight into lifting 100s regularly. That's asking for disaster.
I'd go with 50lbs dumbbells and go super slow on negatives.

maybe rob got superhuman strength?

Ooops! Thought this was the thread on Coleman and Chic...

No just always skipped warm ups and I’m suffering now.So I do warm ups now.But 100s just make the most sense to me.

This is actually an interesting question.
If you go really heavy, you essentially eliminate all isolation movements. Conversely, if you go light you decrease the effectiveness of the compound movements. So, I guess I would go for a middle of the road one like 30 and do high reps on compound movements.

Fuck rogue, prices are retarded.Nice looking stuff but not worth it.

Not really.
One pair would be the Ironmaster adjustable set that goes 10-120 per dumbbell.
Also, OP is fag.
-
Less is more...as they say.
-
100s.
Start with only a rep or two.
Slowly build up strength.
In a few years you'll be able to do high volume training with them.
-
Buy one light and one heavy and just work one side at a time
-
Whatever 22kg is in old world measures.

Changing my mind. Don't just choose the 100s, but choose whichever dumbbell is the heaviest you can possibly lift up off the ground. For some guys this might be 90lbs, some guys it might be 150lbs or higher. But choose that one, and then start with one rep, and slowly over time you will be able to do more reps, until eventually you can do high reps with it.
-
50 lbs
-
50 lb on one side, 5 on the other :D
-
If only one pair and not a set, get 35 pounds. Even 20-50 rep sets, taken to exhaustion, cause hypertrophy.
-
Save your money, buy a $25 pull up bar. Do 500 chin ups/ pull ups a day, 500 push ups, 500 crunches. No need for the dumbbells.

Better yet, find a tree and use a limb for the pull ups, and do some up-hill sprints as well.
Boooom. 8)

Dumbbells? 60's or 65's. If it were Kettlebells, a little lower 53's or 55's depending on country.
-
If someone cant afford more than one pair of dumbbells, its time to slice the ole' wrists.

Now this is stuck in my mind :) -

-
better 1 kettlebell of 30 kg, for 1 arm swing :)
-
one dumbell at 26kgs and one at 32?
-
i got a pull up bar.
i dont really need any dumbbells and i dont want too much stuff laying around, but i just thought it would be fun to have a pair for some bicep/triceps and maybe farmers walk or something :D
some good suggestions in this thread (and i must admit for an adjustable set the ironmaster do look pretty good after looking them up i thought they would be another one of those sci-fi looking ones)

All metal dumbbells are similar so buy the cheapest ones and you can buy more of them.
-
35-40 lbs Hex Dumbbells if had to choose.

I have 25's and 35's and that is plenty. Used to have an Olympic set, squat rack, industrial bench and 800lbs which is total overkill for most.

Agreed that pullups, pushups and crunches can build a great body but you don't even need to do that many reps.

You can build great arms and shoulders with bodyweight exercises. Ever see male Olympic gymnasts???

Most bodybuilders who maintain solid physiques into their later years are pumpers. They take a manageable weight, do higher reps and go for solid muscle contractions as opposed to the low rep model in which you eventually fuck up your back and knees due to rounding and buckling.

Yes, I used to love lifting heavy (even powerlifting) workouts but past age 40 no way. Too bad Ronnie didn't have the same philosophy.
-
so youre saying lifting dumbbells that weigh more than 50 pounds is out of the question once youve passed 40?
it looks to me that the pussiciation of people isnt a recent concept... it started a long time ago

For me, yes. Do whatever you want.

I wish I could think that way,I’m lifting heavier than ever on most things.good and bad I guess.
I am afraid to end up crippled but love training heavy.

I think if you are smart about it you can still lift heavy.
Proper warmup and form, cycle the poundages, hit a very heavy session, then back off.....just don't hit everything heavy all the time.
-
Go on amazon and type in the search yes4all dumbbells. You can get two 100lbs adjustable dumbbells for $200 bucks. Just construct a waist high table to assemble the dumbbells. I used a similar set up for decades. You can make dumbbells any weight very quickly.
-
Dumbbells are superior to barbells. So many exercises which can be done one arm at a time or together, more range of motion so you can hit the same muscles at different angles within the same set and take up very little space at home.
-
and you can use them for self-defense!

I once worked for a company that banned dumbbells for that reason. There was a guy who brought a dumbbell to work and would do one arm curls while he was on the phone (crappy telemarketing job). One day two other employees got in a fight and the one guy grabbed the dumbbell from off the floor and hit the other guy with it! :D
