Title: What do y’all tip your people?
Post by: Irongrip400 on December 18, 2019, 05:25:43 PM
I’m not talking about wait staff, but folks who do service things for you like clean the house, cut your hair, massage etc.? With Christmas coming up I want to make sure I’m not insulting them. Thanks.

Trash guy gets 100 at Xmas and I throw him a random 20 here and there as he takes my trash with no stickers.

Mailman 100 at Xmas

My valet guys at Mohegan sun 20 in and 20 out if I lose for short parking if I win I’ve done 100-300 out as they are great guys and they hook me up with all kinds of stuff. I’m there at least once a week.every scotch I tip waitress 5.00.

Besides waitresses these are the only people I tip.

Haircut I tip $2 lol shave the sides & spike the top. Shouldn't take more than 7mins. I'm not there to chit-chat.

Restaurant 15-20%. Depending on how often I go to the place (sushi places usually 20%, sometimes 25% or throw the actual chef some cash as well so they take care of me whenever I go with a new girl)

Wtf else do I tip???

Oh, maids I used to tip $100ea (old lady & her niece/daughter/grand daughter, whoever she was).

Dated a couple waitress who hate Canadians. Said they never tip. (Live in a resort community that tripples in population over the cold months, with about half that being from Canada)

Are you talking year round tips for every time a service is provided or specifically year end /christmas tips?

Speaking of tipping I was reading about how much to tip hotel cleaners, given I stay in hotels 1-2 weeks every month. I read that typically people tip a total of 10-15% of the total bill. That seemed high to me, no?

For you that would prob be a lot of money as I imagine you stay in some fine ass hotels.I used to go to Disney a lot with the family and the stay for two weeks in a 3 bedroom villa which was expensive and I would tip the cleaning lady 20 when I wanted her to come in which was every other day so would be around 150 for two weeks,I thought that was good being as she would be in there for an hour and that’s around 1.5% added up against total.

For the first time in my life, I have a regular gardener whose crew shows up once a week. Sometimes it's just one fellow and othertimes it is a team of two. Is it normal to tip/gift one's gardener at Christmas? Should I just tip the two guys who do the actual maintenance, like you would a server in a restaurant? The mail carrier left me a Christmas card in my mailbox with no stamp and her return address handwritten on the front of the envelope. This is a nice, but confusing gesture. Is she looking for a Christmas gift from me?

It’s all relative to the hotel grade you’re right. For work travel I tend to be fairly cheaper If it’s just me and no family. But NY 3 stars are still $200 a night so $25 a day. That just seems crazy and I put myself through school waiting tables so tipping is super important.

That is weird of mail lady to do that,I don’t think I would tip if they are basically demanding one.Lawn guys,if they do good work and are friendly then yeah I would tip each one of the workers not the company itself.

Good advice. Thanks.

I thought the bid for a tip (if that's what it was) from the mail carrier was odd. Not sure her boss, the USPS would approve her essentially sending out Christmas cards with no postage.

Yes. She's angling for a gift.

---------------------

I've taken to tipping like piece work rather than one bulk payment for most people. Due to routes and such, we might not see the same mail man, etc..... all that often, so it's just easier to throw him $5-10 during the times he does something nice.

Barber, Waiter, Misc service staff? 15-20% depending on how nice they are.

The guys I know that tip trashmen, tip from a range of $25 - 100, the guys on the top end of that range usually expect and get better service, and perks like not being hassled for bulky trash, etc.....

Christmas. I tip wait staff well when they do their job and are good at their craft. It’s rare I tip below 15% of total bill, even if they’re shitty.

We usually do $15 per day if they really get in there and make it tidy upon our return. $25 day if it’s a nice hotel. I stayed at Hotel Raphael in Paris and I think I left $150 for five days and that place was close to $900 a night.

I tip:
My barber: Zero
My trashman: Zero
My mailman: Zero
Valet: Don't use 'em. I park my own car.
Waiters: Don't use 'em. I meal prep

Money is not a plaything to be handed out in order to look like a bigshot. Money is meant to be invested and grown via compound interest or appreciation, depending on the vehicle. The only tip I can offer anyone with their hand out is to get a real man's job.

Hmm? Interesting...

Barber: he's a friend. Gives me a "clean up" for free often. No cash. I always buy lunch, Starbucks, pizza
Garbage man:  zero
Mailman: zero
Gym check in staff: Starbucks gift cards

In a casino:
Room Maid: zero
Anyone bringing anything to the room: $10 minimum
Dealers: I win, they win.  I lose, they get nothing.
Slot attendant: low of $20 on a hand pay, highest ever on a hand pay was $500.
Bartenders: Drinks are always comped so $5 per drink minimum.
Valet parking staff. $10 minimum.

That’s about what I’d tip albeit I don’t think I’ve stayed at $900 a night hotel. I was traveling back and forth to Paris this past spring working with one of the soccer teams there. 3/4 star hotel was small and even pricier than NY.

The only services I use that merits a tip are restaurants and food delivery. They usually have a selection on the bill of how much percent you want to leave topping off at 30%. I tend to pay more attention to the actual amount I'm leaving rather than the percent. For food delivery, it starts at $10 no matter what I order but if 20-25% of the bill is more than $10 then I'll leave that. 30% sounds like a big tip but last week at Denny's my order came to about $12 and change. No way I'm going to leave just $3.50 tip. The minimum is going to be $5 no matter what. I also have this personal rule that every time I tell a homeless bum approaching me begging for money to fuck off, I make a note to give an extra five bucks to an actual working person.

I use to do tip related jobs like pizza delivery and it really sucked to be stiffed. You drive and walk in the rain, climb stairs, walk up muddy trails, go back and forth trying to find the right address because the customer doesn't even leave the porch light on... and they just take their order and slam the door in your face. In those days five dollars really helped. Your hourly rate went from $6/hr to $11/hr just from that one deliver.
So I remember that and 5-10 dollars is nothing for me now but I know it means a lot for the working man. And it's always in cash to keep Uncle Sam's grubby hands off of it.

Not everybody can start out with a "real man's" job and are working and trying to put themselves through school or maybe working an extra job to save up more quickly for a house.

If you don't tip and are a regular customer, believe me, the workers take note. On food delivery, you always go to the back of the line even if your order came first. And with these food services like Uber Eats or Door Dash, the driver is dipping into your food. Taking a few french fries or Onion rings or anything type of "finger food" on the tip over.

A lot of it has to do with class. It shows what kind of character a person has on how they treat service industry workers. Women are far more likely not to tip than men. They are used to and more comfortable being served whereas men seem to be more sympathetic to the guy just trying to do some honest work for a living.

If I'm at a restaurant and I get bad service or attitude from the waiter, they will get zero tip. That's the point of a tip, to encourage good service, it's not a right.

However, in 99% of cases I leave a tip. Where I live it is optional, most people don't, so even if I give my standard 10-15 % tip the waiter is always very thankful.

I don’t really go anywhere that tipping is expected, the woman cuts me hair, don’t go for meals ect, only ever tip regular the lad who comes with the grab wagon to take excavation away for me at work as he will usually go the extra mile compacting it into the truck bed so it all fits in one load even if he’s running over weight saving you money on a second wagon load So always give him extra £30-40

She's threatening you. If you don't give her something then your mail is going to get lost. That's the message.

That would rouse my ire. If I were a retired man with time on my hands maybe I'd have a new pet project.

Restaurants, I do 2 x the first number, but always round it up.
Delivery people (furniture, etc) just throw them a 10 each.

Haircuts - doing my own for 30 years, no need to tip myself.
Garbage, mail, etc. - zero, its their job.

I actually agree with this concept mostly.

I don't/try not to tip just because it is expected because they chose an industry to work in that they are expecting that. I will, however, tip randomly people that are legitimately doing a good job, etc. Those are usually individuals who are not working in those industries and have often wished I was rich in order to really make someone's day/life who has really stood out to me as being a genuinely good person/worker in any industry.

I'm a bit surprised, well maybe I'm not, that there is just a like of good old fashion goodwill towards other people that put in an extra effort to be polite, courteous, and provide good service.

I remember this time last year I was standing in line to get one of those ice creams at Dairy Queen where they hold it upside down before they give it to you. The place was packed and their was only this one Black kid, about 16 years old, taking orders. People can be such pigs. Disgusting inconsiderate, self-entitled, pigs! These fatsos (and they were all FAT!) were riding this kid like a third world donkey. Bitching about the wait, want more napkins, how come this fatso got his ice cream before this other fatso that said he ordered before him.... it just went on and on. Disgusting fatsos waiting impatiently (most eating something while waiting) to get more fatso treats to stuff their fatso face utterly clueless about how busy it was and it was all on this 16 year old kid.

But that kid, that teenager (a group I have inherent disgust for), just kept that smile on his face. Just polite as hell. It was unbelievable! What great parents he must have. Most likely Military because that's overwhelming where the tiny minority of Blacks here come from.

When I got my order, and he also turned it upside down with a big smile, I told him how impressed I was. I gave him a twenty and he gave me my change and said, "It's OK. It's easy to be nice when people are nice. It's when you're tested that you see what kind of person you really are."

I was floored! I wanted to talk to him more. Find out everything about him. How do you become like that? When I got my change I then stuffed a $10 in his pocket which he predictably protested. Just letting him know that he makes a difference. For that one passing moment, he made my life just a little bit more pleasant. As much as I like to punish bad behavior I like to reward good behavior. Promote a feeling of goodwill and it matters how you treat people

Restaurants 20%
Casino Hotel rooms I give the maid $5 a day.
Convenience stores with a tip jar= Nothing.
Home food delivery like a pizza $ 4 to 5 bucks.
Valet parking is something I never use.
Mail man we give $10 at Christmas. They must really clean up on that day.
Garbage men- Our town uses one of those mechanized trash can lifts.
Barber gets $8 buck tip a hair cut. I get my hair cut every two to three weeks.
Moving men - I had three move me from one house to another. I tipped them $50 bucks each. I was the forth guy and we were all shot.
Milk man $10 Yes, I have a milk man.

Agree, these are the ones deserving of a tip. Had a similar experience at Subway.

I cannot stand people at fast food restaurants (or in general) melting down over food when clearly the employee has nothing to do with it and is doing his best. Not his issue if the boss didn't put enough people on staff at that time. I've had to say things several times to people messing with/being jerks to employees because they thought they were waiting too long, etc.

Had a milk man for over 25 years. People are shocked about that. This sounds like bull shit but I have never seen the guy. He delivers once a week about 3AM to 4AM.  Every Christmas he puts a calendar in the milk box and I give him a Christmas card with a little cash in it. The only one that has ever seen him was my oldest boy who is 27 now. Over 22 years ago when he was about 5 years old he heard me say to the wife I have never seen the guy. My five year old said one night I heard the truck and ran down stairs. He said he pulled the shade away to see him and he waved at him.

Despite having worked the craziest hours on earth including weekends and holidays I have never seen the guy. I should get a home security system to see if he looks like my kids.

I’m not talking about wait staff, but folks who do service things for you like clean the house, cut your hair, massage etc.? With Christmas coming up I want to make sure I’m not insulting them. Thanks.

Generally around the price of a single weekly service (if it's frequent) is acceptable and appreciated ~ probably nothing under $20

Hairdresser - $20 - women more if they are getting full services like cut & color frequently
Garbage man - $20-$30  My guy picks up weekly and it's manual (not one of those big trucks with the hydraulic fork)
House cleaner - depends how often and what they do.  If it's something like monthly and you pay $120, then I'd tip $40 assuming you're also tipping throughout the year.
Massage therapist - $20
Gardener (mow & blow), assuming it's a weekly service, same guys (not a "crew" of random guys), if it's $100/month a $25 tip is good.
Kids teacher or babysitter - a "gift" from the child, gift card or small trinket.

Where do you find a gardener who charges $100 a month. I pay three times that amount. They do everything though, not just mow and blow. They're usually here for about an hour.

Did you know USPS employees are not allowed to accept monetary tips over $20? Mine is getting a box of fine chocolates.

Being retired and on a fixed income, many home service people likely earn more than I get. -Never thought about tipping the garbage man. My son lives in Germany. Service people, including wait staff in restaurants are well paid. Tipping is very modest as compared to the U.S. American tourist who tip too much are not well thought of.

I spend "a lot" of time in germany and austria. If you tip them well (like americans minimum 5 € or 30%) you get special treatment. Everywhere! No one in there right minds will dislike a generous tipper!

I'm cheap and have no money....happy?  ::)

As far as tipping in Germany goes. My son who has lived in Germany the better part of the last 26 years is who told me I was tipping too much. Apparently, he is right,

Germany: Tipping & Etiquette

Tipping and Service in Restaurants, Bars, Clubs, etc.
Service and VAT are included in the menu price in restaurants, bars, etc. all over Germany.  Still, it is typical to "round up" the amount to some more-or-less round figure. A rule of thumb is to add 5-10%, generally ending with a full Euro amount.

Caveat: it is not typical to be given a check, then leave your money on the table.  You have to tell the amount including tip you want to pay before you pay (via cash or credit card)

How You Pay: Typically, the waiter/waitress always comes to you and tells you your total. You then tell him/her how much you will pay, i.e. the amount you owe plus any "rounding up" -- for example, the waiter/waitress might say "€7.60;"  you hand him/her a €10 note and say "9 Euros."  S/he then will give you €1 in change.

Tipping in Germany and tipping in some other countries, such as the United States, are totally different. In Germany, waitresses are paid more and so the tips are smaller compared to the USA. Nevertheless, the 5-10% rule of  thumb still applies. If you want to tip less (according to some advice on the net) be prepared to appear stingy.

https://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g187275-s606/Germany:Tipping.And.Etiquette.ht ml

tipping in restaurants in Austria
If you receive good service you can leave a gratuity of around 5%, or round-up the bill – the same applies for bars and cafés. ... Give the tip as you are paying the bill. For instance, if the bill is 18.50, you can simply give the waiter/waitress 20 and say danke (thank you).

If you are sincerely tipping 30% on a regular basis, of course you are getting special treatment and the folks you are tipping are laughing at you all the way to the bank.  ;D

Human nature is the same all over the world. They want to be paid as much as they can get for the job that they do and as someone who worked for tips, and know many that did and still do. Nobody is "laughing" at anybody who gives extra tips as if they are a sucker. They, we, appreciate it and, yes give them special service as they are treating us special. I just read an article about how Dana White, the UFC president, is a super great tipper and is revered for it.

What about you? Say you were a waiter at Denny's and the bill was $20 but the guy tipped you $50 because he felt generous and wanted to make your night. Would you laugh at him?

Does Denny's have restaurants in Germany? Who knew? My post was about tipping in Germany, not Hawaii or elsewhere in the U.S. Laughing all the way to the bank is a figure of speech. It should not be taken literally.

I'm an excellent tipper. Never less than 20% and always rounded up to the nearest dollar. I tip bartenders for each drink which comes out to way more than 20% on a tab. However, 'when in Rome I do as the Romans do'....another proverb.

I don't believe this story. What company is this? A gallon of milk is 2-3 bucks, haha. Oldest boy is 27 and milk man been coming over for same amount of time.  :o

Its way to little for their services.
Of course I want them to laugh and be happy when they take home there hard earned cash.

Just not agreeing with your goofy comment about "American tourists who tip too much are not well thought of". It's just stupid. Everyone likes a good tip. lol

Don't be sorry. Maybe I am wrong. Maybe in the many times I visited Germany, I got it wrong. This is what my son told me. As I mentioned before, he has lived in Germany for more than 25 years and has a German wife, three grown children, many German friends and a huge extended family. Maybe he's wrong too.

I take it you probably travel there on business or you are a frequent tourist. Do you visit the little towns as well as the big and small cities? My son and his family live in a small Bavarian village 20 k outside of Würzburg. Even though he works on a military base in a large city, his experiences may be very different from yours.

when i worked as a bartender one female coworker told me she looked down on guys that gave her generous tips, she was a nice person in general but looked ugly

Do you suppose her unattractive appearance had anything to do with her attitude. You'd think a good looking woman would be more likely find guys' who tipped extravagantly motives suspect.

i would think the ugly appearance would make her appreciate it more, but i think it's proof even ugly women have guys trying too hard to impress them and they look down on that

she was nice person in general, most of them were lasz and entitled bitches

also female service workers don't tip well themselves, so guys shouldn't feel obligated to tip them well

So I killed it at Mohegan sun the other day actually a three day run and each day I tipped 20 in for short parking and 100 on way out then the final day was when I came out to my 3 normal valet guys who I have been seeing for around 10 years now and so I tipped them each 200 on way out.great guys and they make shit and it was right before Christmas. If I’m winning everyone is winning.Thats the way I look at it.Feels good.

Sorry man, I don't buy it. Service workers don't make shit and depend on tips. It's like saying you look down on your boss for giving you a raised. If she really said that she's just talking.

But, if true, she is an extreme exception and probably a bit kooky. When anybody ever complains about getting too much money why don't they just give it back? Whenever anybody complains that we don't pay enough taxes why don't they just
send the government more of their money.

Man Mohegan is like my second home.Absolutely love it.Cant stand fox woods and never did great there, the only part that was decent was mgm, old Foxwoods is pretty gross as far as burns and stains on tables carpet etc... also it’s so industrial where as Mohegan is more comfortable and personal. They treat me great and I usually kill it there.Foxwoods never gave me much respect,I get every night at Mohegan free stay except holidays but at Foxwoods it was pulling teeth.

she wasn't complaining of course she wanted the money, she just looked at the guy as less of a man for being generous with her
