He always wanted into that world. It crept in even before the divorce, the only thing that slowed it was that he was based on the east coast, and old NY money and fame wouldn't let him in. It depends / his Tracey Morgan & interviews with comedians and rock stars are good. But when he interviews Kristen Stewart and raves about Twilight, or Hilary Clinton and basically acts like a CNN reporter, he loses his edge.

I'm finding this happening to me with stuff It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I'm around the same age as all the actors in the show, so when it came out in the mid 00's, I thought it was the funniest thing ever. But now while I still find some of it funny, a lot of it I don't anymore especially the newer seasons.

By your reply, you imply that he sold out AFTER he left commercial radio. It seems odd that when he is at his richest and most successful point in his career he decides to sell out.

Not sure if you'd consider this selling out, but to me it's the fact that he's turned his back on the comedy and shows that got him to where he is today. It's one thing to expect an almost 70 year old person to have the same edge and humor that they did 30 years ago, but his so called regret for his previous work to the point of whitewashing old shows and even asking that people throw out his old books is to me selling out.
Even Conan O'Brien tried telling him on his podcast that he should knock that attitude off.

It's hard to believe that he would compromise his beliefs so he can make more money. He didn't do that when he was just a nobody and that is what got him to where he is today. I think he is second only to Rush Limbaugh as far as the radio game.
Asking people to throw out his old books and presumably not buy them in the first place is hardly an example of someone trying to make more money.

To be fair to him, Stern did try to get them to move or get live in help, etc..... over the years, they didn't want it. He plays it up about living in bad Roosevelt, LI (original house - http://www.scoutingny.com/the-house-that-created-howard-stern/ ) , but they moved to Rockville Center, LI during his teenage years, which is a good bit more affluent. He doesn't talk about those years much, but that house sold a few years ago for $600,000 and change ( https://www.trulia.com/p/ny/rockville-centre/413-rose-ln-rockville-centre-ny-11570--2010414089?rd=1 ) , which is perfectly in line for being considered middle class in that area.
I can't find it now, but one of the gossip sites had video of his old house he had with his 1st wife, that thing was a compound. It was sold a while ago.

Wow! He was pretty raunchy in his day and many of his "jokes" were in poor taste and even cruel. Now as he's gotten older he regrets this. Many people regret how they were when they were younger. I'm sure our own Tbombz have these regrets. Now, who are you to tell him that he shouldn't have regrets or feel ashamed or embarrassed about this past behavior? ::) No he wasn't. First of all, he named himself king of all media as a joke and also as a fuck you to michael jackson. But the fact that he wasn't getting guests that matched the popularity of his show was one of the biggest gripes on his show before he moved to satellite. He would occasionally get a big guest back then, but big celebs would do every other new york radio morning show and skip his. And more often than not they would call in instead of making studio appearances. Compared to every other nyc promo vehicle, he wasn't able to pull name guests. Even he acknowledges that it's different now.
He is best buds with celebs he used to feud with- rosie o'donnell, ellen degeneres, jennifer aniston who he used to call fugly and a butterface all the time. He would occasionally get a big guest back then, but big celebs would do every other new york radio morning show and skip his. And more often than not they would call in instead of making studio appearances. Compared to every other nyc promo vehicle, he wasn't able to pull name guests. Even he acknowledges that it's different now.
He is best buds with celebs he used to feud with- rosie o'donnell, ellen degeneres, jennifer aniston who he used to call fugly and a butterface all the time. As a result of his ideological shift he has gained access and influence that he never previously had. That has helped him maintain a level of relevance that he might not have been able to have otherwise. Extremely wealthy people have done worse for far less. But that happened in the 90s, too . All the pop and rock stations came up with zoo formats to jump on the shock jock bandwagon. There were multiple deaths during his terrestrial years due to other stations trying to outshock him. And the thing is he wouldn't necessarily have to be shocking to be an older version of his old self.
I'm definitely left of center ideologically, so I don't have a problem with someone opening their eyes to more progressive ideals later in life. There's just something about his shift that seems so weird to me. It's not even entirely him. It's the fact that all of these people he feuded with for years are now his a-hole buddies.

I still really like the show. I couldn’t care less about most of the celeb interviews, but the music-related guests are winners. Although the show is a bit tamer than his early satellite years, i still find it funny as hell.

Think you're in Jersey. I used to endure Stern on 92.3 K-rock in the late 80s in friend's cars on the way to school. This was after breakfast where the old man thought Imus describing a guy as "a very attractive man" was the apex of wit.
Stern sold out? I agree. Every minute of every broadcast I ever heard was Howard desperately crafting remarks to bolster his shock-brand. I recall accurately predicting what he'd say next and nailing it verbatim. Should have dubbed him an Obvious Jock. His schtick was played out in the first 5 minutes. How anyone fell for it is a mystery. Dude was knowingly and shamelessly hack, day after day. Yeah, he sold out. Not later. Immediately.

Over the last few (3 or so), he’s had big names in music (Paul McCartney, Maroon 5, Dave Matthews, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, Ringo, U2, Snoop, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top, Miley Cyrus, Robert Plant and a ton more). Movies/TV he’s had Paltrow, Johnny Knoxville, Claire Danes, Amy Schumer, Jennifer Lawrence, Colbert, James Franco, Jon Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Letterman, Seth Rogan, McConaughey, Downey Jr.). That off the top of my head. He had Hillary Clinton this year. The big names dont necessarily make a good show (i’d actually rather hear prank calls and crass stuff). My point is that the guests he gets now are bigger names than in years past, most likely b/c his show is more refined and somewhat tamer than the Artie Lange years and anything earlier.

Over the last few (3 or so), he’s had big names in music (Paul McCartney, Maroon 5, Dave Matthews, Billie Eilish, Cardi B, Ringo, U2, Snoop, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top, Miley Cyrus, Robert Plant and a ton more). Movies/TV he’s had Paltrow, Johnny Knoxville, Claire Danes, Amy Schumer, Jennifer Lawrence, Colbert, James Franco, Jon Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Letterman, Seth Rogan, McConaughey, Downey Jr.). That off the top of my head. He had Hillary Clinton this year. The big names dont necessarily make a good show (i’d actually rather hear prank calls and crass stuff). My point is that the guests he gets now are bigger names than in years past, most likely b/c his show is more refined and somewhat tamer than the Artie Lange years and anything earlier.

Maroon 5, Seinfeld, Ringo, Snoop, Bon Jovi, ZZ Top, Knoxville, Jon Stewart, Letterman, McConaughey all came in during the Artie or KRock years. Most of the rest weren't really famous till after Artie, etc....

He got old. Peak was mid 90’s when the movie came out. Then it brought him too much noterity where he became a caricature of himself.

i forgot about brady, that was a big interview for him as tom seems to shun most of the sport radio guys
i now remember he had the kardashians on a few years ago and khloe was on a few months ago, they are just as famous as anybody these days
