You claimed he couldn't have sold out because he was already rich and influential.  As a result of his ideological shift he has gained access and influence that he never previously had. That has helped him maintain a level of relevance that he might not have been able to have otherwise.  Extremely wealthy people have done worse for far less. He's earned possibly hundreds of millions of dollars since. Just because what he had 20 years ago would be enough for you doesn't mean it was enough for him.

But that happened in the 90s, too . All the pop and rock stations came up with zoo formats to jump on the shock jock bandwagon. There were multiple deaths during his terrestrial years due to other stations trying to outshock him. And the thing is he wouldn't necessarily have to be shocking to be an older version of his old self. 

I'm definitely left of center ideologically, so I don't have a problem with someone opening their eyes to more progressive ideals later in life.  There's just something about his shift that seems so weird to me. It's not even entirely him. It's the fact that all of these people he feuded with for years are now his a-hole buddies.
