I would suggest you go to a reputable jiu jitsu school and ask to roll with some guys. It's a humbling experience. They love guys that come to their dojo and challenge them. Whoever wrote that diatribe is a simpleton.

I don't "roll" with "guys". If it's fighting/sparring we're talking about, I am an adherent of the striking arts and I would drop one of those "guys" with a reverse roundhouse kick to the jaw as he attempts his failed takedown.

Do you have any grappling experience or any ground game for that matter?

I’m SO tired of hearing guys challenge other guys to go to a BJJ club and “roll” (lame) with another.

Obviously a person who hasn’t trained it will be submitted in no time flat.

Doesn’t mean much of anything, really.

A fight pops out at a bar, no amount of rolling is gonna secure the win.

A quick and well-timed combo or monstrous brute attack almost always wins a true-life altercation.

If you’re “rolling” around on the floor of a dance club or on a sidewalk, news flash: BOTH of you are going nowhere, fast. And if he’s got friends, you’re done dead.

Size, strength, speed, and aggression, reigns supreme in real dust-ups.

What sold me on Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was how they approached these endless arguments.
They just simply challenged you to fight. They had an open challenge, made famous in an article on Rorion Gracie in Playboy magazine, in which they would pay anybody $10,000 if you could defeat a Gracie in a no rules bare-knuckle fight. The challenger didn't have to put up a dime and had nothing to lose except his pride. In those days, late 1980s and early 1990s we had challenges come in from all martial art styles. Every single one of them got their ass handed to them. The Gracies revolutionize martial arts and now if you don't have a grappling background you have no chance.

This Roast Beef guy can make all the claims he wants and tell us his styles and qualifications and ranks, but what he won't do is actually fight a legit Jiu-Jitsu black belt. It's not hard to do. A legit Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt is always willing and able to throw down. Unlike traditional martial arts where they always preached walking away from a fight and being a man of peace and all that yin yang baloney, not so with the Gracies. Insult them then be prepared to fight. They never made any bones about their belief that the whole point of martial is to be able to fight and to be ready to fight. There are other things you can get out of training because for most people training in martial arts they rarely, if ever, get into a real fight, but they never lose sight of the fact that martial arts is about fighting.

The Gracies developed their style, which is different from the original Jiu-Jitsu taught to them from the Japanese, by actually fighting. Both in the dojo and in the streets or beach.

And they have been fighting for real for generations.

Nobody gives a shit about BJJ anymore.

Turned out good old american wrestling was superior, as proven in UFC time and time again.

BJJ is now more of sport and exercise.  And a great one at that.  Tons of my buddies love it and thats cool.

For self defense purposes - one needs probably 1-2 years of going 2-3 x a week for it to do anything in a street fight situation vs anything else.

Wrestling and Boxing - and keeping ones self in good shape physically - probably far more effective overall.

In a typical street fight - bar fight, etc - who the F would try to go to the ground as a first resort and pull guard and try to work a arm bar or a choke?   FNG dumb.

The Gracies lined up tomato cans for the so-called "gracie challenge". They carefully controlled the media surtounding their bouts, and would become violent when they got shown up and were beaten. Plenty of videos on the internet of the Gracies getting their asses kicked.

BJJ is very effective. I've used it enough times over the years with altercations (that I tried at all costs to avoid).

What I will say is that I've always trained in both boxing and BJJ. I think BJJ is great, but I believe a striking game is incredibly necessary.

Going to the ground is great for BJJ guys and wrestlers, but if you fight a guy with great takedown defense and you only know BJJ, there goes everything you had in your bag of tricks.

Striking: Muay Thai > Kickboxing > Boxing (how I rank it)

Ground game: Wrestling > BJJ

Never be a one trick pony.

Where I live almost every BJJ school also offers striking or Muy Thai to be more well rounded.
I think the goal would to be well rounded fighter like Bas Rutten. He is excellent on his feet
or on the ground. Plus he loves head butts and liver shots. He's not afraid to teach real street fighting.
If schools teach like he does you can pretty well rounded. Let's face it most aholes in a bar
are only trained in sucker punches and sloppy hooks.

So how would Mike Tyson have done in the UFC?

As tremendous as his striking was - truly, a beautiful work of art in motion to behold, along with the striking of Evander Holyfield - I just don't see him beating much more well-rounded heavyweight fighters, who fill the ranks of the UFC heavyweight division.

Do we have any examples to compare this too?

Because I can't think of any prolific striker who rose to the top of the UFC heavyweight rankings who did not also have top wrestling [Stipe Miocic and Brock Lesnar come to mind].

Discuss.

PS - I have UFC Fight Pass.  Does anyone have any Ironage UFC fights that they recommend that I view?

17-22 was his prime. By the time he lost the fight to Douglas he was in a mental decline.
Some career. ::)  I hadn't even come close to my potential as an iron warrior at 23.

Are you insinuating Elvis took drugs? A fine athlete like that would never jeopardise his health

A wicked libel there.  Rattlesnake speed on display...

I love these clips of Elvis. ;D  He seemed to really get into these demos.  It's a good thing he never had to actually fight anyone as he would have been killed.

I don't think that would work in a real fight.

Bas Rutten is one of those guys who have a funny and likeable personality but you have to be careful because he is crazy as f*ck.

Love the Bas.

Even Elvis is very careful around Bas.

You can tell Elvis believed in the power of Chi.

What kind of simpleton goes to a bar?

To get Tyson on the ground you have to step in his punching range. The speed, power and precision of that man. Good luck avoiding getting caught.
