Given the freezing water, whats the chance that when his head went under he had a heart attack or similar?

Probably couldn’t swim and drowned.
A Riptide is essentially the water version of a windtunnel. You don’t want to go directly into it but around it. That means you should swim parallel to the beach before going towards it. Unfortunately the instinctive move is to go directly into it.

Never seen or been in a rip tide/current that I know of. I always hear about them, but never been in a situation where I felt out of control in the water. I’m interested in what it would be like.

You usually hear about kids getting swept up in them, not adults especially a big guy like that. That’s why I suspect he couldn’t swim.

PELLIUS might be able to confirm this but on the island of Oahu there is a beach adjacent to Big Sandy where a rip tide could carry you out a couple of hundred yards and eventually dump you on a deserted beach about a half mile further away ... unless you fight it.
A couple of famous bodybuilders did not realize that and almost drowned in their successful attempt to get back to the beach alive.
I ain't no Kahuna but Some old time locals claim that the ocean around the Hawaiian islands does not want how-o-lies (spelling) ... so it spits them back on shore.
Or something like that.

Was Franco Columbu his college swimming coach?

Black folks can't swim anyhow.

Exactly! I got caught in one while swimming off Virginia Beach one summer. I wasn't that far out - maybe 50 feet or so off shore. All of a sudden it caught me and it was like being in a wind tunnel as you said. I had learned about swimming with it so I did. Literally ended up nearly a quarter mile down the shore before it quit.
-
NEWS UPDATE: they found the body

Oh wait---nevermind----it was just a piece of whale shit

Fuck swimming that far off the beach in a place with murky water.

Lol, Salvatore coming back with a vengeance!

KAYFABE, BROTHER!!!!

KAYFABE, BROTHER!!!!
Is that his real name or was it Shad? Who names a kid after a fish? For that matter who names a kid "Kayfabe"? That reads like a sneeze name. That's a name where someone asks what the new born child will be named and the mother sneezes when she replies and that sound becomes the infant's name.

You guys that are making jokes...check yourselves. If you’re caught in a rip tide with a heavy current sometimes it doesn’t matter if you’re Michael Phelps or you can’t swim at all
-
What exactly happened? He went for a swim and never returned?
Probably wouldn't of even been out there if gyms were open.

I saw that somewhere on IG, do you think he'd be out there swimming if the gym was open? Was he known to swim out there regularly?

I’ve met him a few times just in passing but it seems he was there with his son, I’m just guessing he wanted to just take his son to the beach. But you touched on something with gyms being closed. A little off topic but It really affects people when they have no “out” Alcoholics and drug addicts that haven’t drank or done drugs in years are going back to old habits and domestic and sexual violence are up. His son almost drown that days as well, if schools weren’t closed he’d be school and Shad might not have been at the beach that day.

Did not know the gentlemen personally. Today I spoke with two guys who train at Golds Venice and are real friends with Shad... They both said he was always friendly, respectful and a sincerely nice guy who was thrilled to have had some success in Pro Wrestling and was humble at all times.
Regarding rip tides and undercurrents... I grew up spending all Summer's on Cape Hatteras on North Carolina's Atlantic Ocean. A strong rip tide is a frightening force and absolutely too strong to beat. We learned as kids, relax, tread water and ride the tide out. It will stop. Most rip tides run parallel to the shore and not out to sea. I very clearly remember sitting in the line up on a surfboard and half the line up- about 6-8 surfers all got picked up in a rip tide. We were moving up the beach as fast as a person could run. The rip tide took all of us 1/4 mile up the beach. Just crazy. The experienced guys just said, "relax hang on to your board, it will spit us out..." 30 seconds later the current just stopped and we all started laughing. Scared the crap out of me.

From Raven - you will be missed
Thanks Raven for the pics -

The key to getting back to shore is to swim with the current nearly parallel to the shore. Angled slightly towards shore. Trying to swim in a straight line back to shore will only exhaust you and lead to your frustration, exhaustion, panic and do demise.

Your sage advice is way too late, Johnny Weissmuller

Some of you are fucking assholes. He died because he told the rescuers to save his son first. He was a very experienced swimmer but not even Michael Phelps can out swim an unexpected rip current

Probably one of the worst ways to go.

Went too deep, I never go deeper than mid shin for this reason....

No bro. That’s the problem people think if you don’t go out you’re safe. If your waist deep, a rip can get you.
Also if you can’t break free by swimming parallel, then you go with the flow. 80% of rips go in clock Circle direction and will lead back to the break waves and back to beach. Even the 20% will go max 1300 ft or see and can either swim back or a rescuer already sees you being drifted

True. Drowning is very painful. I have experienced it as a child but was pulled from the water. I can't swim so I would only go waist deep in the ocean as a child. I kinda learned to bodysurf but was always with someone from my family or a friend and in a pool my father told me that if I went too far and the water was over my head to just wait to reach the bottom and then push off as hard as I could to reach the top. He also had me practice holding my breath.
I might be able to learn to swim now but my leg is so weak and I'm afraid to try. Besides I don't own a pool and don't know anyone else that does. ;D
I'm sorry this man drowned. That is a horrible and painful way to go. At least lifeguards were able to save his son.
