They are implanted in the ear but I think they have a "power pack" they wear on their belt. It is strange that Lou would get the implant for the reason you stated. Lou could always hear, just needed a hearing aid. The sounds being so different with the natural hearing seems like it would be confusing.

It should be very confusing. I do not think there is a sort of a hearing DAC for the brain yet. I could be wrong and if I am in this instance that's great for Lou and other folks like him.
