Title: Being broke sucks
Post by: Loma84 on September 10, 2024, 04:32:02 PM
Due to several medical expenses with my wife, even with insurance, I’m basically living paycheck to paycheck now. I don’t even have enough to pay a $10 copay at the dentist tomorrow (I get paid Thursday… actually Friday, but my bank makes the funds available a day early). This sucks, and I just wanted to vent.

It is outrageous that this is the case in the United States...Republicans believe that seriously sick people with no money just need to hurry up and die....

What does this statement have to do with health care?  The point of my statement is that your financial state should have no relation to your ability to access health care...

Money gets you healthcare but what I think is probably worse is it gets you more justice. If you have money for lawyers you can skate on some things. This does feel unfair to me but I don't know what can be done about it. But regarding the healthcare most people here don't have private health insurance, costs too much, so you get inferior care sometimes and especially waiting times are catastrophic.

Should we be responsible for paying other people's medical bills now? The problem with medical for all is it reduces the level of care. No one works for free.

I just paid thousands for my pec surgery yesterday out of pocket. It was not cheap. Should other getbig members have paid for it? Do we want socialized health care? By having for profit health care we have the option of paying for better service. I also booked a flight and booked economy that is what socialized health care would get you basic economy and an advil. You want first class with whiskey with a brand new tendon taken from an incarcerated  Chinese dissident you got to pay.

It does suck. Your goal as working person should be to put yourself into a position where you are sustainable even when things go sideways.  This requires some planning, but it is doable.  The last time I left a job (my supervisor retired so I left; a common thing in my industry) I had no financial worries.  I had set plenty of money aside and most importantly, I had income from rental properties I acquired in prior years.  My two vehicles were already paid off… and my rental income was more than enough to pay my bills and keep me afloat until I started a new position.

Glad you are doing well.  When I retired I wondered how I could make ends meet? My retirement income is only 65% of what I was making. I have the same expenses. I cut down on spending and my house should be paid off in the worse case scenario in two years and at best one year. That should free up a ton of money.  I also got rid of all credit cards too. It's Amex or a debit card now. Both cars are good running cars but they are old and paid off.

On a side note it's amazing how so many people my age become rich when their parents die. They often get a paid off house that could be worth 500K plus.  Then I see friends my age buying incredible cars and lavish vacations.  My mother when she died gave me everything she had and that was $600 bucks.  My wife's mother left her 20K when she died. We didn't come from money.

Solid rides and garage floor

https://racedeck.com/ is way cool.  I saw it at a party once and had to have it.  Lots of RD installation videos on YouTube.  So many cool designs; the tiles come in many colors, styles, etc.  check out the Floor Designer tool on their website. It will create a mock up of what your garage floor can look like.

I'm sure this makes him feel better.

It might… if it prompts him to think differently about what is possible.  I still watch in amazement when I see friends get paid on Friday and by Monday or Tuesday they are broke again. They always have the latest shoes, clothes, truck upgrades, tattoos, smart watch, and paying for a storage locker somewhere, etc, but they do not have money for a downpayment. And they don’t understand how I can own three rentals.  You have to set goals for yourself and be disciplined about realizing them. Presumably you all do this in the gym; you can do it with your finances as well.  My next goal is to buy a small apartment building (4-10 units) somewhere (LoopNet.com is your friend).  It’s great revenue and super for tax write offs.

I was scouting a few prospects a couple months ago… but will likely wait until next year to pull the trigger.   Call me Mr. Roper.  ;D

No.  But someone else might.  I am sure he is not the only person wondering about a better path forward in uncertain times. Most people are just a couple checks away from insolvency.  How long could you go without a paycheck before your life became very uncomfortable?  That’s a question worth thinking about… especially if it prompts you to make better decisions… today.

Anyone that criticizes this statement is just a hater.  I wish I could have been as consistent and disciplined as this.

Unfortunately, I've made some stupid decisions in my life. Even during the periods where I had access to a decent amount of money. Now, I'm 43 living paycheck to paycheck. I can only blame myself.

What part of Chronic do you no understand? It has torn 3 times major and twice minor and the tears are becoming more frequent as is an aching pain due to continued micro tears. If I don't get it repaired and continue training it is going to get worse and detach completely eventually. I am not going to stop training, so the other option is to get it repaired. Now if you get an injury and choose not to have it fixed as it continues to get worse that is your prerogative, I am getting mine fixed before it gets worse

Torn three times because you ego lift.

When I have been injured I rehabbed it....and made sure I did the things I needed to for that injury not to reoccur.  You seem to fail at even that.

You were told NOT to lift much after your hernia surgery and poo-poo'ed that advice.

The point is this guy who started this thread lost 25lbs and still isn't very lean. He doesn't need to put 25lbs back on to be big especially at 67 years old. 240 is also pretty big.

However, despite not being as big or as old or as fat as him I can relate to him and his desire to bulk regardless as similar things have been said about me. So, I do find it admirable in a way and support him

It is outrageous that this is the case in the United States...Republicans believe that seriously sick people with no money just need to hurry up and die....

Lies. I’m republican and pay my employees healthcare and they have great coverage. Obamacare drove up prices even more.

Talke up your vendetta with me elsewhere

Vote for Kuntmala and you'll stay broke.
Either way we are screwed. A 20% tariff on foreign imports won't make life any easier.

Do you miss the hydraulic car lifts in your previous house?

Bay looks to be doing great good for him. I would consider myself to be doing alright as well. However, success is not measured in bank accounts or houses or pools or bodybuilding shows. You don't want to be broke as that sucks but success is a family to share it with. I am happy with my wife and kids and excited to be starting a new chapter in my life.

You guys make fun of my trike but it is great it puts me at the same height as my son when we ride our bikes. He really enjoys it and we ride together almost everyday he is here that is success to me. There are a lot of really nice rails to trails greeenways around Raliegh that I am looking forward to riding with him.

LOL you’re complaining about what others have gotten, a pension you said pays you a 100k a year? Were you forced to retire? If not why would retire if you didn’t know how you could maintain your life?

The good news is you figured it out and it sounds like you’ve planned to leave your kids better off so they’re not posting on a bodybuilding board in 30 years that their parents didn’t leave them money for new cars and vacations.

Ok let's break it down. The Raleigh Metro Area has about 1.5 million residents. What are the chances you contact and convince the half dozen people out of 1.5 million I may eventually hang out with that I am a bad guy? Do you really think you are the first person who thought of trying to smear someone online? People just think you are crazy when you do that. Also the kind of people I usually make friends and hang out with are definitely not the kind to give a rats ass anyway. So by all means spend all night for the next 20 years sending emails to the entire world telling them I am a bad guy. No one cares

You want first class with whiskey with a brand new tendon taken from an incarcerated  Chinese dissident you got to pay.
the working class has been paying other peoples medical bills for a long time now, healthcare was much better before the ACA. To make matters worse, the Gov just escorts 20,000,000 new people in and gives them a bunch of free shit all on our dime. Then tries to gaslight us into believing we’re inhuman by bitching about it. I know a lot of people that drive nice shit and go on nice vacations yet opt out of company healthcare. I pay around $300 dollars  bi-weekly for all the different types of healthcare I have and my employer matches but one thing I never have to pay fore is a visit to any dr including specialist, labs, X-rays or minor procedures because i bought every insurance my company offered. Sometimes sacrifices have to be made and my health isn’t something I fuck with

Ok again I will say that I opt for every possible insurance + I utilize the max in my tax savor flex spending acount which is 5,000 dollars per year. I never use all this money by years end and my wife usually burns the rest by having laser therapy on her eyes or some othe shit. I could get a brain tumor today and it would only cost me a max of $3500 for all of my treatments. If you’re willing to sacrifice and pay for all the different types of insurance, including AFLAC, then there is not a scenario where an illness can put you in the poor house. I understand that there’s a lot of people that live paycheck to paycheck and can’t put into all of these things, but I got sick 15 years ago and it put a huge strain on me financially and once I dug myself out, I made the choice to always make this investment. AFLAC literally pays me back for the time I miss at work if I have to go into An appointment if I choose to file it with them. I may drive a vehicle that has 130,000 miles on it and is 10 years old, but my family will literally never be put out because one of us is sick.

Some people get lucky, but virtually no one does everything right the first time around.  In the scheme of things 43 is still young… and if you make the right choices and investments between 43 and 53 the remainder if your life can be quite comfortable.  Whether or not you have the discipline to do that is a question only you can answer.  In order to chart a better path forward you need to be very honest with yourself (not us) about why you went off the rails with stupid decisions before; that is the only way you can prevent a repeat of previous bad choices.

Smart decisions.

Hankins hasn’t worked consistently in years so he doesn’t know the difference between good insurance and a lousy plan, so he thinks the plans offered by Home Depot are the same offered everywhere. When you supplement with the gap plans via your employer’s benefit any issue you have won’t be financially devastating. Plus many of them are pretax benefits so paying for them actually can put more money in your pocket.

Insurance is a financial benefit and in many cases be an investment but it seems many people don’t see the benefits.

Something like life insurance can create an instant financial legacy that isn’t taxed.

That sounds great I am happy you are in a good position financially and with your family health now. I hope to get real good insurance soon. I lost mine when my last job ended, and it was not time to sign up or burden my spouse's plan. Or maybe I just didn't think I would have an issue, and it was a rip off regardless I just spent thousands out of pocket. I have spent a lot out of pocket on medical over the years. But yeah it is a priority which is why I spend out of pocket vs just ignoring problems.

The thing is if I had a job and the insurance covered the pec surgery I still could not get it. I will be unable to perform spreadsheet work for months. Great points.

What do you mean you would burden you wife’s medical plan?  If you can afford a cosmetic surgery that won’t allow you to overload excel you can surely afford the tax benefits that come with adding a spouse to her coverage.

I wasn’t trying to come on here and tout my great financial position, that certainly isn’t the case. 21 years ago, I took a job working for a municipality which do not typically pay anywhere remotely close to the private sector, but if you’re willing to utilize all of their benefits, what they don’t pay you can be made up in benefits.  After staying with them as long as I have, I’ve managed to get in a position to where the amount of money I bring home is actually fairly well or at least above the national average of incomes. The sacrifices were easy ones because all I had to do was just decide not to get a super fancy car or buy a home outside of my means. I may never be able to afford trips to Fiji or any other place fancy but in 7 1/2 years when I meet the rule of 80 I will be able to retire and for the rest of my life earn an income that’s 20% higher than what I was being paid on my retirement date that also receives a 2% raise yearly. And after I leave this world, my wife will receive that same pay until she dies. But, just like everything else I’ve said I was the one that chose to put 9% of my pay every week never missing a week into a plan

I am referencing OP who didnt have 10 dollars. I am glad you are covered. Being Frugal and living within your means is an underrated attribute.

You must have me confused with someone else. I never said I get 100k a year. It's near that though. My job has a mandatory 55 year old retirement and every year you have to prove you are fit to do the job when I was working by an annual physical fitness test that many would fail here though it's not hard if you follow a fitness life style.

Complaining what others have gotten? Where did you get that?  I was just pointing out a fact that many people my age are well off because of inheritance.  It's common.  I have four kids. One is a doctor of pharmacology. The next is a Psychiatric nurse practitioner, then an electric engineer and the youngest just got out of the Army Airborne who is a civilian flight medic going to college. No, they will never be on this board, lol.  One lifts but he couldn't name one bodybuilder outside of Arnold.

My father was born in 1906 and came to this country through Ellis Island legally with no money. Joined the Army during World War II. My mother's father was a 25 year member of the US Army in the Puerto Rican regiment. His wife died while my mother was young. Back then there was no provisions for children of the military members. He gave my mother and her sister to friends to raise in Little Italy in Manhattan. I come from modest means though my father and mother lived the American dream of owning a house, car and vacations. I wish they could have lived long enough to meet my kids and they would have been proud of how well they are doing.

Thanks for the digs and compliments.

I really dont need to argue about tax benefits of medical plans all day it is kind of boring

You just want to argue. You can afford to be added to your wife’s medical coverage it’s not to expensive.

You are correct I am wrong. You never said pension.

My taxes are one third of yours and I make around 100K year in retirement. I just assume your wife makes over 300K. You make a lot of money training people?
I read this part as a complaint. I didn’t realize you were t complaining

In all seriousness congratulations on raising a great family and setting up your kids for success. I don’t think there’s a higher honor you can have as a parent. Your parents would be proud of what you’ve achieved and where the family is today.

I was wrong he was paid today.

I can’t see this post

For future reference if you need help and ask give some contact info. Also once at the dentist tell them you left your wallet at home and you don’t have Apple/mobile pay but you’ll come back. Go back on Thursday.

You are welcome.

After 30 days it wants you to renew and it does cost money. I let the free trial expire. I rode my bike 3 of the last 4 days this week. When recording the speed and distance I get too caught up in worrying about speed and distance. I prefer just to cruise and relax and enjoy the ambiance when riding. Strava definitively does not cost money to use, there are over 100 million Strava users and the vast majority of them do not pay any money to use the site.  The paid "subscription" merely opens up additional features (https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/216917657-Strava-Subscription-Features).
