In Flex Wheeler's report on the Masters Worlds in MD this month, he wrote that he disagreed with the judges' decision and he didn't think Bob should have won. I know everyone got bored of this topic months ago, but it's interesting when a legend like Flex throws in his oppinion on contest results.
"I love Bob, as he and I have gone way back, but I can't agree with this decision. Bob looked good, but overall I thought he was carrying too much fat and water. His thigh's sported very faint separations. Bob's always had a good chest and guns, but even here, I felt he had a little fat in the lower chest. There was very little separation between his brachs and biceps in the rear double biceps and his lower back seemed to be blurred by both fat and water. But the most telling evidence was in the glutes and hamstrings. There was no separation. A lot of people in the audience concurred that he was off.
Wheeler offered thoughts on the rest of the placing as well:
"I was puzzled as to why some got top 5 while others were seemingly invisible. I'm not a judge . . . but you can't help but shake your head and wonder. The mixed feelings of the audience resonated throughout the building, marring the thrill of Bob's first proffessional victory."
He also wrote that he thought Rusty Jeffers was overlooked; expressed with bold letters and an exclamation mark.
Props to Flex and MD for keeping it real!

flex keeps it gangster

Now, i wonder what Bob has to say about that.

Now, i wonder what Bob has to say about that.
He'll say Flex is just part of the "peanut gallery".
-
Flex also thinks that he should have won multiple olympia's :-\
Most disagreed with him then and most will disagree with him now
Bob won...He was easily the best that night....Not as hard as others but classic x-frame and darwfed everyone from the back

flex is usually spot on with his contest coverage, and although i think he was kinda harsh on bob, i agree with most of his statements.

so then who should have beat Bob that night???

From the pictures in MD, I'd have given it to Jeffers.
Bob looked as smooth as silk panties.

Uh oh, you did it. The Chickophants will be out in force to defend your post. You might want to duck and hide under the table.
-
Wow, Flex is on top of every angle! 2 months later he gives his report, way to go Flex!
P.S. - Bob should have won, Bob did win, Bob was the clear winner, Bob was the overall winner, and Rusty should have placed higher.
-
Bob should have placed 3rd behind Rusty and Pavol.
Thanks for playing, though! ::)
Rusty = Back-less

Theres a good reason Flex is a photographer and not a judge...
I do however, find it ironic that Flex of all people, thinks I skated by on my proportion, symmetry despite being soft in the glutes/ hams..... Hmmmmm...sounds familiar!

Flex couldn't get the glutes together...

The irony of Flex (who won more shows based on the same things pro/con) calling the kettle black....

Comparing yourself to Flex is being a little self-righteous isnt it?
-
Flex couldn't get the glutes together...
Thats not even a fair comparison.....his glutes (can't even believe someones ass is even an issue) BUT, it is possible to be well conditioned in other areas but the glutes. Unfortunatly Bob's overall conditioning matched his "glutes"!!
-
Comparing yourself to Flex is being a little self-righteous isnt it?
No one is comparing Flex and I...only the situation and response to HIS opinion.

Bob, do you honestly feel you beat Pavol in the muscularity round and Rusty in the posing round?
I think that is what made everyone laugh at the show- the fact you got stright one's in everything. At least humor us, and give you the overall after giving the guys the rounds they deserve. But there is no way your posing routine beat Jeffers. No way.

You were soft everywhere, not just glutes and hams.

Johnny Stewart looked like a mess by the way and he place what 2nd 3rd?

wow chick do you always try this hard to make people hate you.Everyone saw the pictures of your Christmas that came early so why don't you face it and admit it was a gift
-
Chick is to Flex, as Shawn Ray is to Ali.
-
??
-
Flex Wheeler was an incredible bodybuilder but is definately not playing with a full deck which to me undermines his credibility. If someone more balanced made those statements I'd give it more thought but good old Flex spends too much time fighting ninjas to earn my respect. Carry on...

with all do respect bob chick your suggestion that it takes education to be a IFBB bodybuilding judge cant be serious. IFBB judging is a joke. an IFBB promoter in one town is the next town's IFBB
judge. talk about a circus sideshow. thanks ron for providing this filter of anonymity.
-
Flex is a joke. Despite the implants, synthol and gallons of gear he took throughout his 'career' he never had the heart or balls needed to win the big one.
Then theres Dorian: fit and healthy with a very successful supplement company. Ha ha ha, Dorian is the king
-
That's like saying Cutler doesn't have the heart or balls to with the big one.
-
what year?
Flex def. owned Ronnie in 99'.
-
Flex had all the tools to BEAT Dorian - his genetics, as have oft been stated, were awesome! Even Dorian admits that he'd have been in trouble if Flex had worked harder. Instead he trained like a little girl and wasted his incredible potential. Its a genuine shame because he could have been the best ever.
Jay and Ronnie work as hard as each other, no one can deny this. Both guys are fantastic bodybuilders, but Ronnies mutant genetics are just to much for Jay [unless Ronnie is really, really off - 2001].
-
When they both turn their backs it was GAMEOVER. 99 was one of Ronnie's best ever. Def the hardest!
And at Masters world....Bob got the elevator and the rest got the shaft. And education to be an ifbb judge? Please, it takes 2 seconds of looking at a lineup and my 5 year old kid could pick the winner.
-
Chick did enough to win that show, he looked good enough, it was a VERY weak lineup.
The only thing that anyone could complain about is the placings after Chick, i.e. Jeffers, Pavol higher and Groulx, Stewart Lower.
But, in the end, who the hell cares....before the posting started on these boards, the only bber I had even heard of in this show is Pavol (and yes, that includes BOB).
By the way, congratulations on not having the balls to go on the olympia stage.
Can we assume you will only be competing against "masters level competition".
-
Chick, I think you take comments way too personal.
Flex said what he tought of your physique that particular day and a lot of people seems to think the same way.
Personnally I think you deserved the win but I saw you way harder in the past
-
Bob, glad I got to meet you this weekend! How did you like the Southern Classic?
Yeah, Chick was the clear winner. Tool.
-
The main problem with the show was that Rusty was overlooked. Did Bob deserve to win? That's arguable, but he wasn't far from being the clear cut winner if it came down to it being close. Should have Rusty been in 2nd place or taken the show? Second place should have gone to Rusty if Bob won, but, really, it could have gone both ways.
-

Stop applying logic. The show was designed and concieved to give Chick a win. The contestants were weak by design accept for Jeffers.
The biggest mistake the powers that be made was allowing Jeffers to compete. If he was never there then none of us would be talking about this because the only controversy would have been the creation of the show in the first place.
They screwed up by letting him compete, never comparing him to Chick and by so badly overlooking him.
-
Rusty is beating Bob in those poses, I'd like to see them from the back though just to be fair, but from the looks of Bob's hams he was definately soft. I hate to say this again, but would the outcome been different if Bob wasn't the the "Athlete's Rep"?

There wouldn't have been an outcome because the show wouldn't have existed.

I was at the show and really it could have gone both ways. The crowd was literally split in half. I thought Rusty should have won, but to say that Bob wouldn't have placed 2nd afterwards, would also be wrong and vice versa.

i was there, bob won but it was a set-up for paying his dues. whoever invited rusty made a big boo-boo
-
Bob did not win every pose of every round.
That is what the judges gave him.
Many here agree he was probably the best overall guy - BUT - the gift of straight 1's - even in muscularity (Pavol) and posing (Jeffers) - cast a shadow of doubt on it.
-
Many here agree he was probably the best overall guy
I don't, he was the overall second best guy. The best guy that night astonishingly placed 8th. What a joke.

Much the same way that Phil Heath didn't lose a single round at the COlorado Pro- straight 1's in everything, every round. They really decide who is the winner early one, and the judging/posing/comparisons don't mean anything. The winner gets straight 1's, and they spread out the numbers to rank 2-10.
It's hard to be perfect in any sport- with BBing, it's very rare that one man has the most mass, best aesthetics, best shape, beats every other competitors in every pose, and is the best poser, ALL on the same night. He's gonna get edged somewhere. Giving a guy straight 1's really makes the judging look shady.

In the past boxing judges used to sit atop the corruption mountain. They were the undisputed kings of fixing a contest. Bodybuilding judges have eclipses even boxing judges.
How can anyone take a contest seriously when perfect 1's are given across the board to Bob Chick?
Seriously, how the hell do they expect their decisions to mean anything or even hold the slightest bit of validity?

since i never read a thread with shawn in subject i was unaware of his claim LOL
-
i remember some years back, Chris Cormier and Flex went head to head in 2 consecutive shows which i believe were the San Fran or the Ironman and then the Arnold. Chris soundly beat him at the 1st show and then a week later he also had him beaten, but the judges decided to give it to Flex to most peoples astonishment. Whereas he might be right, he has no right to go public with an opinion like that when he knows all too well that he has had more decisions go his way than Bob ever will. Cormier put it down to his mystique and that was spot on

Wheeler can say whatever the hell he wants - he's earned it. Besides, he was covering the contest - He's supposed to report on what he saw and how he saw it. This is MD, not some weider rag . . .
-
granted he has freedom of speech, but im saying he should be the first person to aknowledge that his name carried him at times

The irony of Flex (who won more shows based on the same things pro/con) calling the kettle black....
surely Chic you must be mistaken,
as Flex didn't win shows based on being an AMI employee, IFBB officer bb.com employee or a
manion stooge..

That's what I said back then, I don't know how he placed top 5..............
Looks like another Palumboism victim.........

Looking at those pics comparing Rusty and Bob at page.2 of this thread makes me wanna....yuck... Rusty looks great, compare their definition LOL. On Bob you can´t tell the difference between his biceps-triceps OR brachialis. On top of that...NON EXISTING shoulder separation, hello!? You can neither see a single cut in his legs from the side. Bob must be extremely sloppy in the offeseason. That is just pure laziness and can´t be blamed away.
And yeah...another "fun" thought. Chad´s corner is known for being big on diuretics and I have a hard time believing Bob does´nt use any of them. Then think about Joe McNeil who does´nt use diuretics at all with his athletes and he´s got the driest one of them all - Dexter.
-
Now, i wonder what Bob has to say about that.
...Who'll honestly care what Bob has to say about that?~ ::)

any and all can simply look at the video...why rely on pictures?
I don't hold any grudge or ill will to Flex...he's entitled to his opinion.
What I do question is why Flex personally congratulated me after the PREJUDGING, when he commented that it was mine all the way, and not close.
If you're going to make statement...at least be consistant.
-

Can you honestly say that you've never "over-assured" a competitor out of a desire to be polite or avoid confrontation? If so, hat's off to you. If not, you've answered your own question.
Besides, this is Flex Wheeler we're talking about, right? Not the most straight-and-narrow guy out there, from what one hears.
-

I didn't ask Flex how he thought I would do...or for any feedback. He came up to me.
If he thought any differently, he could have said nothing...
You've got the wrong guy if you think I blow smoke up peoples asses...If people want to know my opinion...I give it to them. I don't think being rude or condescending is necessary...but the truth is better than giving a guy a false sense of where he is.

Flex def. owned Ronnie in 99'.
Can someone who has it please post the comparisons in the 99 olympia between flex and Ronnie...I don't see what your seeing....Flex looks good and also retarded in that video...His bicep's are almost as big as he is wide...Flex is narrow and Ronnie makes him look silly...Flex has always been a lightheavy weight...And him trying to play the mass game is what probably cause his health...He was a balloon period...I'm just glad he came out and talked about all the oil he had to use to get where he was...Now looking at this video you posted, it obvious just how much oil he really used...

Flex packed more MUSCLE on his small frame than Ronnie packs MASS.
-
no not even close---the video's that should be shown are the ones of flex in the late 80s at the nationals i believe...He was a skinny light heavy...i saw one where he took 4th in (in want to say 89 but not sure) tiny joints for sure and was doing his splits back then..Had flex shaved into his head...He thought he was all that back then and let me tell you, 4th was a gift---fast forward like 2 years later and the guy is a complete water ballon....it was so obvious...Ronnie has blown him off the stage everytime since he has one the olympia....Ronnie was always a natural heavyweight and Flex was a natural middle weight...Flex was an illusionist...With his tiny joints, he looked much bigger then he really was...I wish he would come on here and tell the truth that he was never over 230 pounds

he looks shit in that video, bloated as fuck

Flex was an awesome pro in his day - probably one of the very best there ever was.
His reports, however, leave a lot to be desired. I've been to several shows Flex has reported on [I'm not talking about photos here, so please be attentive] and have very [very] rarely agreed with his views on the competitor's placings and their conditioning on the day. In fact, on several ocassions, I've wondered whether we were viewing the same show; that's how out of whack we are. I'm no pro - though I did compete as an amateur back in the day - but somethings are obvious to every and anyone. I have no fuggin clue as to what Flex reports on sometimes.
In fact, read some of the thoughts of the pros and gurus that Flex interviews at these shows. They are often featured on his column. Very rarely do these people agree on Flex's placings and conditioning of the athletes that he reports on. That, my friend, says a lot about Flex Wheeler and what he "percieves."
I've got nothing against Flex Wheeler the person or the bodybuilding legend [he is IMHO]. Flex Wheeler the bodybuilding "legend" was a supurb pro who - with his amazing physique - encouraged me during my amateur competitive days to strive for the very best physique I possibly could. I bet I'm not the only one he did that to . . . Flex Wheeler the person is a gentleman and would be more than happy to stop and chat or give you an autograph. However, Flex Wheeler the contest reporter . . . well, let me just say that he is more suited to clicking away these days at that camera hanging around his neck rather than putting pen-to-paper on that pad he carries.
I wasn't present at The Masters that this thread gist is about, so I will refrain from making comments.

check out the masters video on Bodybuilding.com...Bob lapped the field...Johnny Steward took second and looked like a geared up gremlin...Pavol looked aweful from the back--although harder then Bob just couldn't stand next to him, esp. from the Back...Rusty Jeffers looked real good and should have been in the top 5...But he would have been demolished from the back standing next to him....

You mean the video that focused almost solely on you? You mean the video without one comparison shot between you and Jeffers? You mean the video that was so biased towards you that in reality the camera operators would have been more honest if they didn't even shoot anyone else and just focused on you instead.
You mean that video?

Brutally accurate analysis. remember the full body pan on bob during the final posedown haha... it took like 15 seconds.
Oh, and the 180 straight seconds of 'Bob, hand on hips', as he waited to get onstage.
-
I didn’t attend the show, but I always had a feeling that if bob would win any show he will get criticized cause he is the athletes rep.
That’s called conflict of interest.

i think you just need a bit of education..... look at the side chest shots, bob is hitting it how it should be done, tall and proud showing off the full development of the chest.... rusty i hunching over and leaning into it because his upper chest is lacking and he knows this so he wants to try and put more emphasis on his lower chest and deltoid. and the side tricep bob is owning as well.... look at his size and vascularity, is muscle bellies are much fuller than rustys... i hope this has been helpful for you.
-
Give Bob traps, tris, and maybe calves - none by much. Jeffers takes delts, pecs, abs, bis, quads, and hams. [Plus style points for the G. Gordon Liddy mustache.]
Jeffers wins.

bob
you lost that show

It helped me see you're even more clueless than I originally thought.
Yikes, how many times did you have to take your driver's license test before you passed it?
see the funny thing is that you guys are saying im an idiot, but tell me how what i posted is wrong.... all you can come up with is these silly one liners.

We all come up with silly one liners because the difference is so incredibly obvious that either you're joking in saying Chick owned Jeffers or you're utterly clueless.
Chick doesn't even want anyone looking at the pictures, he wants people watching the video. Do you know why? Come on, you can do it. Think, think.
Ok, I'll tell you. It's because Jeffers is easily beating him in the pictures and because the video focuses almost solely on him. There's no way to compare Chick and Jeffers watching the video because of the way it was shot but there is when comparing pictures.
Chickophants such as yourself either aren't clever enough to know what you're looking at or are just playing a game when you defend, either way you look bad.

your still presenting a very empty arguement.... short of facts and virtually no analytical comments. you say rusty should have one because "he was better". weak. i commented on those photos pin-pointng individual bodyparts, commented on the flaws in the way rusty was hitting the pose etc etc. monster playground logic on your behalf.
-
There were probably some contests Bob should have won & didn't, so what's the big deal? Rusty was judged 8th, rather oddly, but he isn't the only one who brought his best to the show. Bodybuilding judging is subjective, & if Chick got a pass on this one, so be it. At least it put the pro masters guys back onstage, & that's a promising basis on which to get more pro masters competition (including, I hope, for masters women & masters figure) going in the IFBB. Aging bodybuilders are a growth industry, & the first of the gen-Xer's (generally defined as having been born between 1961 & 1981) are in their early 40s & winning pro status. Give Rusty & other masters guys more opportunities to win. While we're at it, the NPC can combat the PDI magnet for new pros by granting more pro cards to their members. It's ridiculous that Erik Fromm & plenty of other guys are still "amateurs" (a term that really has no meaning when they have better builds than some of the "pros").

This post perfectly illustrates a poster that is grasping at straws. An analytical debate? Are you kidding?
If this wasn't so laughable I would debate you. Given that it's a complete and utter joke, I won't.
Debating an idiot makes you look like an evener bigger idiot.

A distinguished old lawyer is supposed to have said, 'When I was a young and inexperienced attorney, I lost cases I should have won. As I became accomplished in my profession, I won cases I should have lost. In this way, justice was served."
The big deal is that Bob - who has used his radio platform to (rightly) insist that the contest should go to the best man on that day - is enjoying the possession of a title and a prize that rightfully belongs to someone else.
-
Bob was the clear winner. His quality is easier to see in videos and while posing you can see his muscles "pop". Rusty should have placed second.

Don't think I've forgotten about you, my screwdriver is nearly orange with rust. You're in for it.
By the way I like eggplant, mushroom and sausage pizza. ;D

Since when was bodybuilding competition fair, honest or objective? It's sanctioned by a private organization whose goal is to make a profit, & market the winners for the maximum amount of advertising dollars. No one in the sports world recognizes the record of competitive bodybuilding wins. These records aren't in sports almanacs. They're not reported in sports news. If shows are covered in newspapers, it's typically in "lifestyles" sections. Mainly they're ignored by the public at large. That leaves the muscleheads & their fans arguing about who wuz robbed, & that will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks if you have $2.50 plus tax.

fuck the mainstream public - this is our sport. If they dont understand it that's their problem

yes well done, you made yourself sound very intelligent ::)

The irony of Flex (who won more shows based on the same things pro/con) calling the kettle black....
The problem with your comparison is that your shape and proportion don't touch Flex's. ;)
Why can't pro's accept criticism and differing opinions on their physiques? Everything Flex said was said respectfully.
-
Ha - no matter what people say - Bob won that show. It was a weaker lineup, but based on that lineup, Bob won the show. 95% of the people whom I talked to that went to it said so. Be unbaised please.
Now, Flex Wheeler has his own opinion and that is great, he is entitled to it. If he says that he didnt believe Bob should of placed first, that is his opinion. I have been in various places with Flex and he has got it correct many times, and wrong a few times.
And that goes the same with many other pros and even judges. Judgees have different opinions.
Now, for those of you, if a competitor gets straight ones, that doesnt mean he got straigh ones from all of the jufges. Usually, they take the top two and bottom two scores out. Sometimes the top three and bottom three, in the case of the Olympia.

What's your explanation for why Jeffers finished 8th and why Chick and Jeffers were never called out together? Jeffers was absolutely robbed and everybody knows it.
Even Chickophants agree that 8th was a joke.

Ron, then you should have talked to more people then just the BB.com employees.
-
As outrageous as Chick comparing himself to Flex is yesterday Shawn Ray compared himself to Ali and some people defended him.
::)
You twats care to show me exactly where Bob compares himself to Flex.
-
granted he has freedom of speech, but im saying he should be the first person to aknowledge that his name carried him at times
What the fvck does that have to do with his article on Bob winning the Masters?
-
Bob = Ken Wheeler ?
Shawn = Ali?
Tito Ortiz = Mr.Olympia?

Yeah, because we all know Flex never did anything in Bodybuilding and you had such a glittering "career".
douche bag.
Good God. When will we have a REAL bodybuilder posting here that actually have some sort of IQ??

yeah i want tom prince back too :)

Can you explain to us, how you feel that Chick won this show "no matter what" and defend him?
Shawn Ray wins a show, loses based on his drug test results, and you say that he won in the judges eyes.
In the judges eyes, shouldn't have Rusty at least been compared in one callout-not even next to Chick, but in the same callout.
Sometimes I don't understand you Ron. Then, afterall, there is the issue of editing during your interviews-it's atrocious!
