Title: Finishing moves that make you go Hmmmmm.....
Post by: LurkerNoMore on September 04, 2012, 09:46:51 AM
Why was Tully's slingshot suplex more deadly than a regular one?  Considering how he barely got them over his head and instead would sort of duck down and lay back so they rolled over.

Why didn't Ronnie Garvin's Hands of Stone KO punch work at the beginning of the match?  He would hit them with closed fists all over the ring.  Was the "wind up" (and then pause) really adding that much to it?

What else can be added to the list?

The Bushwackers' Battery Ram,
Ox Baker's Heart Punch,
Shawn's Super Kick,
The Iron Claw as done by Crush Adams, Kerry Von Erich, etc. (Baron Von Raschke was the only guy who had any business doing that shit.)
The People's Elbow - corny, but a gimmick that served its purpose.

With enough time, I could rack up more.

I beg to differ with that. Fritz had "no business" doing that move?? C'mon man Fritz was a guy who probably had freaky hand strength and you DEFINITELY would not want to face him in his prime after he had a bad day. That dude was a monster for his time.

Or, the Rockers' double-fist off the top rope.

Honorable mention: Honky Tonk Man's "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" neckbreaker.

Crush's kona krush

Masterlock
I always liked Valentines figure four but always thought Flairs was weak because I've never seen anyone submit to it.
3:16's stunner was only good because of the way people sold it.
Warriors splash was super weak as well.

Yes, a lot has to do with how the opponent sells the move.

I've always felt that the best finishers were the ones you could do on anyone, anywhere.
Many moves cannot be applied to bigger men, while others rely on the use of a certain part of the ring - like the ropes or the center of the mat, which is the softest part of the ring and is where most harder bumps at least should be given/taken.

Some of my favorite finishers include the Crippler-crossface, which Benoit could hit from almost any angle at any time on anyone.

I also liked the Texas Cloverleaf as well as some of its variations. Dean Malenko could get into that move so fast, and Lance Storm often used a beautiful roll-through coming off the ropes and sliding between his opponents legs (Lance actually used a modified half-crab, but the similarity is close enough).

Ironically, I never cared much for the Scorpion Deathlock. I was a little surprised to see Bret able to hook the hold on Yoko's fat legs at WM. My biggest beef with the move is that, from a story line perspective, the only way you could tie your opponent up in it is if he simply laid there and let you.
Bret at least had some emotion to put into it. IMO, Sting never had the same impact when using it.

Rock was AWFUL, selling Austin's stunner. When Austin used the "Million Dollar Dream", it looked lethal.

Here is some old school finishers:
Chief Jay Strongbow indian dance and chops / and sleeper hold
Putski's polish hammer
Stan Stasiak heart punch ::)
Bobo Brazil head butt
Haystacks Calhoun's big splash
Baron Von Ratschke claw that channel 9 used to put a big red "X" on the screen to block out the viewer  lol
Ivan Kolloff knee from the top rope

My favorite was SSBG's bear hug with his 22" pythons
Those where the days ;)

I remember that WM party when Hitman took on Yoko. We went berzerk when he put him in the sharp shooter. Great night! Cross face is one of Timmys favorite moves ever. That guy would have an opponent in it in a blink of an eye. Cena is impressive with the STFU as well. There's no way you could realistically get out of it unless you did something drastic. My favorite move's in wrestling today are Ortons snap power slam and Del Rio's arm bar.

I just don't like the way Orton moves in the ring, and this clip showcases it perfectly. He looks very sissy-ish. I'd like to see him move with some authority instead of looking like he's prancing on eggshells.

I totally feel the same way about Orton Mont, but Timmy thinks that powerslam is a hot move. He has a killer standing drop kick as well but cannot throw a clothesline to save his life.

The standing drop kick is a beautiful thing to watch. It requires a good vertical leap and timing, and I can't recall seeing many guys use it over the years.
It was always impressive watching a prime Curt Hennig do it near the legitimate 250 lb mark. Amazing athlete.

Speaking of pathetic clotheslines...for as much as I love his work, Davey Boy Smith threw one of the most horrible clotheslines that looked as though it wouldn't knock down a toddler. As soon as he connected, he'd pull his arm backward and UP, which looked ridiculous. He was too afraid of tearing a pec to follow through!

He and Dynamite were two of the best workers ever, but that clothesline... :)

It's one of those moves that you know what it's supposed to accomplish, but more than 20 secs of thought will make you realize that, in reality, it does more damage to the guy executing it.

Perfects standing drop kick is one of if not my favorite move of all time. Billy Gunn and Paul Roma both had killer SDK. Big fan of Shane O'Macs coast to coast as well.

Good call! I forgot all about Roma's.

What was Shane's "coast-to-coast?" Was that the name they gave his rendition of RVD's "Vandaminator?"
I remember a lot of smarks criticizing him for ripping off RVD. I agree that it was basically theft (of intellectual property), but it was still damn impressive to see him do it.

Shane O'Mac is in my top five. Guy had b@ll$ like a lion. He really put it out there for us. Really wish he didn't leave.

We can only speculate why he left. There were lots of rumors that Stephanie was quite difficult to work with and that the old man maybe played a bit of favorites with her. Maybe Shane felt even more outnumbered with Hunter added to the mix.

Or, maybe Shane saw a different kind of writing on the wall, realizing that it's unlikely that wrestling will ever again reach its previous heights, and decided to pursue other endeavors. The last I heard, it sounded like he was doing pretty well form himself with his cable company.

Was just going to say this.  My beef with his clothes line (and this will be as nit picky as you can get) is he holds his arm out so straight with the palm facing the opponent.  Clothes lines (if you watch old NFL films) are done with palm down and a little more bend to the arm.

Yeah, it looks more like a mistimed bitch slap. Then, the way he waves his arms around while intermittently skipping across the ring... ::)
I don't know anything about the guy personally, but the fact that this character is one of their top talent right now is one of the reasons I can't get into the shows. Looking at their best, I'm not impressed.

I don't know, the Super Kick can be actually believeable at times, especially the way Shawn connected square on the chin.

Ox had to change his move to The Hurt Punch as he was about to get sued over the original Heart Punch name.  It could be believable depending on when it was delivered and the person selling it.

My Top 3 SDK list would be :

1 - Paul Roma - really the only move he could do well and it was just beautiful.
2 - Hardcore Bob Holly
3 - Ziggler

Have to give Sting first place for the worst shittiest drop kick to ever be executed.  That and his little fucked up One Hand Hair Pull Running Bulldog was why I stopped watching him.

Sort of like Van Dammes frog splash.

Most moves off the top rope are like that: elbows, frog-splashes, diving headbuts, etc. Some of the worst I remember seeing were Dynamite Kid's knee-drop and Bret Hart's elbow off the middle turnbuckle. Both men completely wrecked their knees doing those moves over the years.

Title: Re: Finishing moves that make you go Hmmmmm.....
Post by: LurkerNoMore on September 12, 2012, 05:46:59 AM
Worst I ever saw Van Damme over sell the splash was one match he used it on Sabu.  Jumped..... hit it....  bounced over and slid out of the ring to sell clutching his ribs on the floor.  Staggered up after a while, slowly crawled back in, inched over and pinned him.

I didn't know who was more stupid.  Rob for the oversell or Sabu for just agreeing to lay there that long.

Another finishing move so brutal that it must be banned today because no one else does it.....

Remember Shakaska Whatley (Pistol Pez's) famous "Butt Bump" or whatever he called it?   Throw them into the ropes, turn around, jump up so your butt hits them square in the face.... instant knock out.

I never had any issue with Flair.
But, seriously - watch some of Bockwinkle's old AWA matches sometime. It's a bit comical; even more so now after hearing guys comment on it years later. From what I understand, Nick encountered that issue with several holds.

To his credit, though Mr. Bockwinkle sounded like a very stand-up guy who always cared about and acted in the best interest of the business. He was very professional and straight as a grizzly's dick.

Hogan leg drop.

but only because Hogan got lazy with it.

when he put in effort, like actually jumping high into the air, it was great.

when you think of it, it should be devastating if done right.

a 6'8" 305 pound running leg drop off the ropes should be devastating

but not if he jumps 3 inches before doing it.

Taker always took care of his opponents when executing that move. Still, some guys were terrified of taking it. The way you protect yourself on the receiving end is to basically bury your face in your opponent's crotch. Of course, I doubt that everyone who employed this practice did so out of "fear."

Taker's was still much safer than the piledriver version in which the wrestler lands on his ass. It seems there's less room for error. It is also this version with which Owen Hart severely damaged Steve Austin's neck:

Yeah, it was like he did the move for real.

It's hard to say who was at fault, although Owen seems to have taken the blame. The Hart family reportedly resented Austin's segment on the tribute show the RAW after Owen's accident. They felt it was a bit insincere since it was well-known that Steve had a red ass over the incident. Regardless...

Dynamite used to use that piledriver variation in Japan.

I agree .. he took wrestling to personal / serious
Montreal screw job.. refused to drop the belt in canada

Nobody will ever convince me that Montreal wasn't a work, but yes: Bret sounds like a bitter woman. Have you ever read his book? He's basically a "wrestling tragedy" (his own favorite term) who made a fortune travelling the world, banging hot women on every continent, doing drugs, and wearing spandex while pretending to fight. Sure, he hit a few bumps in the road and experienced some setbacks along the way, but SO DO WE, BRET...SO DO WE.

Apparently finishing moves are overrated. Cena got to be the biggest star in the biz with a glorified Fireman's Carry.

Rock's "People's Elbow" was essentially a glorified shove.

Back in the 70's, Dory Funk Jr won a world title with the spinning toe hold, and Bob Backlund won a world title with an atomic drop (I think he called it the Olympic Spinebreaker  ::)   )

It's not a finisher, but does anyone remember the face-spot Rock used to do in which he'd throw a series of right hands at his opponent's face while backing them into the ropes? Then, amidst the flurry, Rock would pause, spit in his hand, and throw one more punch that would send the other guy over the top rope.

I always thought that move sucked until I saw him do it on Big Show. That took it to a whole new level. They did a lot of stupid shit with Rock's character, but that was at the top of the list.

Just my opinion, but the Fed started taking things a little too far in that respect around that time. One of the other things that irked me was how the show almost became "staged for the cameras" rather than the cameras capturing what was happening.

For instance, there was a vignette with Austin and Booker T shot inside of a church. They used cameras inside of the confessionals. To me, stuff like that ruined the element/feel a bit.

That Rock/Mankind halftime show during the Super Bowl the one year; the action was good and entertaining until Mick lowered a forklift load onto Rock and right before the "pin," they cut to a shot of Rocky's face from the point of view of the lowering lift. That kind of ruined the storied illusion.

I agree. Compare that to the vignette if the Horsemen following Dusty and busting his hand where they threaten the camera guy the whole time.

THAT'S how it should be done! They should never have moved away from that even after the public became smart. It's part of what kept professional wrestling as a unique genre.

Also, busting Dusty's hand is a fabulous idea, and I say the more realism the better!

And I agree.  Moving away from those type of vignettes was another of turdball Vince's ideas.

When Owen did the piledriver .. he did like Paul orndoff used to.. he jumped..
Taker kneels slowly.. the tombstone could be done a lot better .. at least make it look like the head touched the canvas.. he wont hurt his opponent they way the taker performs it..

Did you ever see Jerry Lawler perform a piledriver?

It looked dangerous as fuck but supposedly towards the end him, Taker and a few select others were the only ones allowed to perform the maneuver because they were the safest at it.

Interesting; I'd never heard that.

I do recall them banning spinal compressing moves, though.
