I read somewhere, that in European Medieval times, poaching was punishable by death.
The Lords would have giant mastiff breeds tied to "bands" during the daytime,
and loose them at night. Hence they were called "Band-doges".
I think they call Pitbull/ mastiff mix that in the states today. I think all these big square headed breeds trace back to fighting stock. I had a American Staff. Great dog. But The American Pit I had was nothing but a problem from day 1.
