John Clayton just said on ESPN’s “NFL Live” that the Raiders are preparing the process of cutting quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

Clayton said it is not a matter of if, but when Russell will be cut. He also said the team could release Russell before Oakland’s minicamp, which runs Friday through Sunday, and that there is no trade market for him. The Raiders will save more than $6 million if they cut Russell this year.

Most euros know who Michael Jordan, Shaq, Kobe, Bird, Magic are.Nobody in europe could name an american footballer, baseballer or ice hockey player except maybe OJ simpson if any remembered he even played football, Babe Ruth or Gretzky and the chances of them knowing any of them are low.

So you are saying that not one european could name a single NFL football player? Not even the sell-out crowd that attended th preseason games in London?  Or how about the few million households who watch the superbowl?  C'mon.....

Russel was a lazy POS.  I guess he was probably a decent athlete, but he obviously just didn't want to play football.  He should have been cut long ago.  From what I understand, he's refused to even practice/train this pre-season, so I guess they finally had no choice.

P.S. for those who say he "made his money," he'll be broke in 5 years, just like all the others.

Others that come to mind:

Heath Shuler
Ki-jana Carter
Brian Bosworth

The Bengals had to be one of the most cursed teams. Many first round picks totally bombed.
Ki-jana Carter, Akili Smith, Dan Wilkenson, Peter Warick, David Klingler.

You can't call Carter, bosworth and smith a bust.  They have some serious injuries that ended it early.  Who knows how they would have ended up.  Bosworth also wasn't considered to be a top pick by most experts.  His self promoting made him out to be better than he was.  Bosworth was built on hype and nothing else.  A media darling.

Carter played 10 years, and though tore his ACL, compared to other RB's that have had the same injury, Frank Gore for example, he never did much.
Akili Smith flat out sucked. Held out in camp and I don't recall a serious injury.
As for Bosworth, still a bust if drafted in the first round and expected to help totally change or improve the Seahawks.

Yes but surgery procedures over the last decade are far more advanced.  Shawn Merriman with the same injury 10 years ago would have been out of the league but with today's medicine is still playing.

Calling Bosworth and Russell a bust is incorrect.  Seattle and Oakland are the busts for falling for the hype.

If a team decides to draft a 4th rounder first overall who's fault is it?  The player for playing like a fourth rounder or the team for picking that player so high?

Out of the NFL world for a sec....

Sam Bowie...the guy drafted before Jordan.

Dontrelle Willis, ex-Florida Marlins and Detroit Tigers pitcher.  He pitched brilliantly with Florida, capturing a World Series in '03.  He was then traded to Detroit, where he battled depression and a rapidly declining career.  I believe he went to Double AA soon after joining the Tigers.

Ah, Jamarcus Russell.  He's the guy that skipped the mandatory Raiders meeting once the season was over.......for a weekend bender in Vegas.  Shit, as it stands, Oakland has 6 fuckin' QBs on its roster, lol.

Not first overall.  Moon played in the CFL for 5 years prior.  And McNabb?  Real winner right there.

Doug Williams...you my friend = retarded

And if youre gonna do that

David Carr
Tim Couch

Donovan McNabb was the #2 pick overall in the 1999 draft. The player that was selected #1 overall was QB Tim Couch of Kentucky, selected by the Cleveland Browns.

And Warren Moon had to first prove himself  in the Canadian Foot Ball League.

Modern sports medicine is really pretty amazing!  Brandon Roy (NBA) had surgery for a torn meniscus in his knee, and was playing professional playoffs basketball eight days later.

for basketball i'd give it to greg oden, a has been before he was a never was as a pro.      baseball would have to be brien taylor hotshot  no 1 of the ny yankees 1  million out of highschool because he could throw 99 mph as a senior. got in a fight never pitched effectively again at any level.

todd marinovich was groomed to be a quarterback from birth, his father had him doing position specific drills as an infant. he fed him only the finest foods and drilled him without mercy till he got drafted and stunk up the nfl. his father now trains mma fighters.

I'd nominate Len Bias before Greg Oden.

Nah, not a bust, well it sort of is a bust, but its a portland bust,

whats a "Bust"?  to me its if they were excellent in college and cant do anything in the NBA..like Michael beasley and Kwame Brown.

Is greg oden a bust? well, we know he can play when his healthy, but can you call someone a bust if there injury prone? it must kill portland managment to see Durant destroying the NBA today
