Some good stuff in this thread.

I know plenty of folks who perform well athletically with the LCHF type of eating.

Personally, I fall into the category of getting too stringy when I cut out carbs, but I will admit I've never given it more than a few weeks to get my body to adapt.

Regardless, cutting out sugar, refined foods, and seed/vegetable oils seems to be key, then adjusting carb levels depending on goals.

The food pyramid is shit.

So much is made of what fuel a cardio activity is using when bodybuilders discuss cardio. Fast walking is using mainly fat. Sprints mainly sugar. I think in the end what matters is the total caloric cost during the activity and after caloric cost of the activity.  Again I think for a bodybuilder fast walking is probably ideal to save energy for lifting. For an athlete walking is a joke. You need to be doing high intensity like 6 x 800 meters or even 100 meter repeats. At minimum running hard for distance to supplement so many sports where having a big gas tank is important like the fighting sports.

This part has nothing to do with the topic but maybe it does. A friend of mine was out of shape and around 50. He started running a mile at a super slow pace of a 12 minute mile. In a space of six months he is up to 6 slow miles 4 to 6 days a week. The result is drastic. He does no other exercise. His face is tight and he is lean and tight now.  A real runner would laugh at his pace but I'm sure the majority of bodybuilders couldn't keep up with him.

This is why I got bored w BB - looking a certain way has no relevance to actually being in shape or functioning athletically.

True, but as an adult, what is the advantage to having a functioning athletic body?

Everything.....what?  Do you run sprints at your job?  Need a high vertical jump?  Being athletic means nothing if you aren't competing in sports.
