I'd have a receipt to prove any repayments if they were made... I even had a contract with a family member over a loan once...

Friend of mind is currently out $25k to "friends".

He's sure one day they'll pay him back....but I told him to write it off already as it's been over a year.

25k towards real estate investments.

He let them borrow 25k just to help them out.  Didn't even have a cut in it.  Just was trying to help them get started.  They made their money...but haven't made an effort to pay back the person who got them started.

He should have had them sign that across as an assurance - if they really intended to pay him back they would have signed something over to him...

well....my friend is a very trust worthy person.  In the same situation again, he still would do it.  He's already basically written it off, but hopes someday they'll repay him.  He's more worried about the friendship & people coming through on their word than the actual money being lost.  Btw...he's not "multi-millionare" wealthy & the money he has was all earned from scratch.  I was friends with him when he had no money to his name & no real debt but a $7000 balance on a credit card.
