Not only is Arnold Schwarzenegger the greatest Mr. Olympia ever, he's also the greates bodybuilder of the 20th century! The official recognition was given to Arnold by Ben Weider at the 1997 Arnold Classic when Ben gave him the "Gold Order of the IFBB".

Ben Weider: "It is a great pleasure to present this outstanding award to Arnold as the greatest of the 20th century. Afterall, the next medal will be presented 100 years from now." He added, "Arnold has the mind, the heart and the soul of a champion."

So there you have it. Don't you think that's saying a lot? I think so!  ;D

No it was not. His upper body (supersized chest, his delts and arms) overpowers his thighs/calves and not the best forearms. Arnolds perfect balance is a myth.

Here ya go. I thought you could use these to help you see....  :)

In terms of wins (undisputed)...Lee Haney.  There was only one Olympia where Lee was not at his absolute best (91 against Lee Labrada).  Great personality and a fitting champion.  Ronnie has the same number of wins as Haney but 2001 and 2002 were very controversial against Jay and Kevin Levrone respectively.  In terms of THE GREATEST overall,  Arnold Schwarzenegger because he was an almost unbeatable champion in his day and has given SO much back after his career ended.  From Austrian immigrant to champion bodybuilder to movie icon to contest promotor to Governor of California...no one will top that.

Your statement is absurd. Arnold was a great bodybuilder but he was not balanced. His pecs and arms were simply enormous, his legs in comparison were tiny. Bad and sloped shoulders jeopardized his simmetry as well.
However I admit he was a master at hiding flaws and at displaying his best poses. But the pictures we see today are always the ones where he looks better. For a bodybuilder today there is no chance to hide flaws, for each contest we can see hundreds of pictures.

Arnold, because of his physique.

Huge arms, Massive Chest, Impressive delts and lats, and pretty decent legs for his era.

Not to mention the most impressive shoulder to waist taper ever.

HEIL ARNOLD!!!

there is a difference when Arnold competed against two or three people at each Olympia compared to Haney, Yates, and Coleman who are competing against 12 or more people.   Yes Arnold was great but these guys took it to the next level.    Arnold's body from his day wouldn't even place at the USA's or Nationals.    I'm sure if he competed now at his prime with todays advancements he would be one of the best.

but is beating Ronnie at age 43 really that impressive?

seriously.

if Jay was as great as some on the board hype him up to be, he would have beat Ronnie a few years ago - eg in 2003.

In order for Jay to be considered as great as he is by some, he had to beat the best when they are at their best.

that has never happened.

If Ronnie was really as good as some on the board hype him up to be , he would have beat Dorian a few years ago - e.g 1996 lol you have to be carefull what you type slick

and Jay did beat Ronnie in both the symmetry and muscularity rounds of the 2001 Mr Olympia but Ronnie someone ' wins ' the whole contest with the posing rounds and mind you NO ONE in the history of the contest has ever lost the prejudging and won the contest with the posing rounds , Ronnie was a very lucky man

And for the record Arnold Schwarzenegger is the greatest Mr Olympia of all times , he was the standard bearer , he was the first to win six consecutive Mr Olympia titles , he could have won 14 if he wanted to , he retired at 28 and in all probablity never reached his full potential , he could have very easily won in 1976/77/78/79/81/82/83 Haney would have stopped him but he faced no one post his reign that he couldn't have beaten

And being the greatest Mr Olympia doesn't just encompass how many Sandows you have its more , Arnold went on to achive success that no one could have imagined and he still stayed true to his bodybuilding roots ( although thats changes because of his politics ) and he's done more for public exposure for bodybuilding than any former winner

Arnold is the original and the greatest !

I dont see why there are so many Arnold nut huggers on this thread. He is not the greatest Mr. Olympia of all time. Yes he did his little movies that made him famous but if arnold just competing in bbing and didnt do any acting then nobody would have heard of him(outside of bbing). The greatest Mr. Olympia should go to Lee Haney. Ronnie should be next......

Long before anyone heard of Haney or Ronnie there was Arnold , he set the standard for other to wish for 6 consecutive Mr Olympia wins and comming back in 1980 to win number 7 that was unheard of back then , so long before Arnold because famous in the movies he owned the sport of bodybuilding for a very long time , and could have won many more if he wanted to , hell the second best contest is the Arnold Classic , you add in all the rest of his accomplishments and only the naive would say he's not the best

i would sya it is a toss between ronnie coleman and jay..ronnie coleman dominanted this sport for 8 years and each year ronnie came in looking bigger and better..this guy set the bar so high that won't be reached  by any one.jay cutler should also be considered the greatest mr olympia cuz after 22yrs of stalemate ,cutler finally beats a reigning mr olympia.and the matter of fact that jay beat ronnie fair and square makes it even more impressive...long live jay and ronnie

I would say your a fuking idiot. Jay won ONE mr O. Calm the hell down. Ronnie won 8. SOme of you are so fuking delusional its mind boggling.
"Toss between Jay and Ronnie" hahaha. I am a Cutler fan, but at the same time, you have to be real.  Jay is a great bodybuilder, but you morons taking away from Ronnie after finally losing a O (and its QUESTIONABLE ALSO) are a little extreme.

I agree with you. Arnold was great, but imagine if his movie career failed, he would have just been another old fart who used to lift. His movie career put bodybuilding in the limelight, many said he was the greatest bodybuilder of all time.Ok, imagine him without being a big movie star. he probably would have own a couple gyms, His arnold classic, and whatever..

No it was not. His upper body (supersized chest, his delts and arms) overpowers his thighs/calves and not the best forearms. Arnolds perfect balance is a myth.

I don't think so.

Arnold bicep's shape (height) was a gentic gift.  It was still in perfect proportion to his triceps.  His back was on par with his chest including delt tie ins.

Quads & hams were balanced (not one bigger than the other & calves were in perfect size & condition to his upper leg development.

In combination....his lower body was perfect with his upper body.

His faults (more than anything else) was his wide hips & lack of abdominal separations.  He posed in a manner always hiding his weak areas or in twisting shots to give the illusion of having a smaller waist to shoulder ratio.  This would automatically accentuate his upper body to seem sometimes much larger than his lower body.  When he stood in a straight-up front pose....you can tell his upper body totally matched his legs.
