I know someone who was arrested by "mistake" by some zealot homeland security officer post 9/11

They were just in transit from one island to another [alot do not have direct flights so people go through Miami/NY/ATL], and was not even scheduled to be in the US for more than 3 hours. This person is a light skinned black West Indian, with no connection whatsoever to the middle east...but they look Arabic. They were "detained" under some section of the Patriot Act and held for a few days, no charges were filed nor was she ever accused of anything. They let her go, and she's been back through the US [transit] numerous times since, so obviously by allowing her re-entry they obviously do not think she is a legitimate threat.

Since that incident she has never been the same. A few 'bad things' happened to her in there. She is a shell of who she was before. She's completely paranoid most the time...being hauled off to jail for no good reason, plus the treatment she received in there just took her 'spirit'. It is sad to say the least.

I can only imagine what this guy has gone thru - 5 years of getting his ass kicked, with no charges.

Maybe when people say "you gotta break some eggs" they mean cases like this - where one person is held for a few hours or a few days (even tho a few days seems very excessive).

But holding one man for 61 months without charging him - that goes far beyond normal precautions.  people commit rape and sell crack to schoolchildren and do less than 61 months.  It's criminal to deny a man 5 years of his life, and to torture him as well.  Sadly, no one will ever be held accountable for it.
