the problem with Venice is the same problem with Hollywood, West Hollywood, New York City, Miami Beach, and dozens of other places around the country: gentrification. People with disposable income move into depressed but funky neighborhoods, fix it up, then sell it for a huge profit. The people who were there first, who gave the neighborhood its character, and who usually were renters, can no longer afford to live there. Venice is filled with million dollar condos. Same with Hollywood. Even downtown LA is being gentrified.
