I think it's important to note that the clip doesn't even really get good until 2 minutes and about 25 seconds into it.  That's the best part of it, so when you look at it don't just close after the first minute or so...

It's also interesting to note that it was Kevin's first Mr. Olympia and he placed second.  I wanna make 2 observations about this.

1)  There were components to his muscularity and aesthetic here that made him probably our favorite physique to look at in the whole show.

2)  He still had flaws.  His back, while cool to look at in some shots, was still very obviously overpowered by his shoulders and quad flare from the back.  His calves were very weak there as well.

Now...how would you have placed him in this show?  I don't think anyone would have had him first...because of his flaws, and because it was just his first Olympia-level showing, meaning that we all know he had plenty of time to improve...so I'm just saying...there are many intangibles that physique judgement in shows invariably involves that can't be discounted as legitimate.

Having said all that, I'll still say he was the best bodybuilder in that show.  Paradox?  Maybe, maybe not.  Just food for thought.

And oh yeah, Earl, good lookin' out.   ;D

His quads overpowered his upper body. He didn't find the right balance until 95. However, Yates was still too much for him by then.

One more thing...I've never seen lower lats and spinal erectors look quite like that.  There's something very freaky about the way those looked there.  For about one inch the length of his lower-most torso, he still had the waist of a 205 pounder from the back.

Wait...I just thought about something.  Does anyone know if Shawn Ray's routine from that show is on YouTube?

I'd like to hear Shawn's thoughts on what year he feels was his best Olympia showing.

Shawn's back was never elite. That's what held him back.

Well if you ask me, it's been as elite as you can achieve without it's ever having started to take on that "goonish" look.  In some of those old Battle for the Olympia pics some of his best poses in the gym were him hitting his back I think.

And yeah, I guess right here's where we're talking about when back thickness is required to win the Mr. Olympia because of how dominating it is when 2 guys are side by side, but I think that developing a back like Haney's, Yates', or Coleman's is rarely anything that anyone takes on as a personal goal.  Most people want a back like that of Ray or Wheeler.

I know what you're saying, though, Probecito.  What year was this picture from?  Wasn't this '97?

There are a number of bodybuilders that Phil Heath is not "better than."  When Flex magazine spoke of him as the next Flex Wheeler, let's keep in mind exactly what that meant...it meant that when Flex Wheeler first came onto the scene, as did Heath recently, that Flex Wheeler was THE FIRST Flex Wheeler...not THE NEXT anybody else.

Like Richard Jones was the next Shawn Ray.  Shawn Ray wasn't the next anybody.  He was "Shawn Ray:  View and adjust your perception of perfection accordingly."  You didn't need to tie his image to anyone better than him.  Which is what a comparison like that requires.

Now THAT SHOT of Heath is sick.   8)  That's the best one of him out, isn't it?  Ha ha...not sure if I'd ever seen that one.  But still, I've never found him especially appealing for whatever reason.  He's far behind Dexter, Dugdale, Ray, Levrone, and Wheeler IMO and I'm willing to bet that he won't match that condition right there in that picture again.  Maybe if he grew some hair or something.  His head's too round maybe.  Ha ha.  I don't know what it is about him...I'm just not a big fan.

I believe that's from 96. With both Dorian and Ronnie, when they turned around they got better. Shawn on the other hand, it was kind of a let down when he turned around. For example, on BFTO 96 he looked amazing from the front, but when he turned around it just wasn't as awesome as the front.

Heath isn't appealing because all things considered he's quite narrow.  He essentially has everything you'd want in an aesthetic pro except a decent width.
